A 'Beauty and the Beast' Prequel Is In the Works at Disney+. Here's Everything We Know


A tale as old as time, indeed. If you’ve been thinking you need more Beauty and the Beast in your life, Disney+ has you covered.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a prequel series is in the works starring Josh Gad and Luke Evans, who will be reprising their roles as LeFou and Gaston from the wildly popular 2017 live-action Beauty and the Beast remake directed by Bill Condon.

Not many details are known at the moment (it doesn’t even have a title), but the limited series is supposedly going to be a six-episode musical event from Once Upon a Time creators Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz. Gad will also serve as a co-creator, writer, and producer.

Here’s everything we know so far about the Beauty and the Beast prequel series.

Disney

The cast. As mentioned, Gad and Evans will return as LeFou and Gaston. No word yet on whether Emma Watson or Dan Stephens will make appearances as Belle and the Beast, respectively.

The music. THR reports that talks are underway with composer Alan Menken, who also did the score for the 2017 film.

The length. While six episodes have been confirmed, there’s no more information on episode length.

The plot. Since the project is still in the early stages of development, we don’t know much about the storylines—other than that they will follow LeFou and Gaston’s adventures prior to the action in the 2017 film. One thing that could be interesting to explore is LeFou’s sexuality, which was implied in the film’s “exclusively gay moment” which was…pretty much nothing.

Condon previously explained in a now-deleted interview with Attitude that LeFou would be Disney‘s first gay character. “LeFou is somebody who on one day wants to be Gaston and on another day wants to kiss Gaston,” he reportedly said. “He’s confused about what he wants. It’s somebody who’s just realizing that he has these feelings. And Josh makes something really subtle and delicious out of it.”

Not so much, but maybe Gad will actually get a chance to delve deeper in the prequel series. However, if the news about the Love, Simon and Lizzie McGuire series are anything to go by, then maybe not.

Beyoncé Was Almost Cast in the Live-Action 'Beauty and the Beast'

Would the world have been able to handle Beauty and the Beast and The Beyoncé? Because that could have been a reality. Beauty and the Beast director Bill Condon wanted Bey for the role of Plumette the feather duster in his live-action remake of the 1991 Disney classic. Unfortunately, “it wasn’t a big enough part,” he told Yahoo! Movies. The part of Plumette eventually went to Gugu Mbatha-Raw. And ever-gracious Beyoncé, along with Blue Ivy and Jay-Z, still supported the film by attending the L.A. premiere together.

Beyoncé and Condon had previously worked together on 2006’s Dreamgirls, one of only two musicals Beyoncé has done (the other being Carmen: A Hip Hopera). She’s also appeared in comedy films like The Pink Panther and Austin Powers: Goldmember. With her busy schedule and multitude of projects, it makes sense that Beyoncé would rather focus on the big parts than take a supporting role, but we have to point out that she did voice Queen Tara in 2013’s Epic, which, as far as we can tell, isn’t a lead. Her most recent on-screen role (besides music videos) was Sharon in Obsessed in 2009.

This isn’t the only time Beyoncé turned down voice work with Disney. She was considered for the part of Tiana, the protagonist of The Princess and the Frog—and the first Black Disney Princess—but lost the role to her Dreamgirls costar Anika Noni Rose after not wanting to audition.

Clamoring to audition for Disney, on the other hand, was Idris Elba, who revealed in September that he’d sent in a tape of himself singing in a bid to play Gaston. Elba, who has a musical theater background, “called and said, ‘I want in!'” but speculated that the casting department thought he was “too old.” The part eventually went to 38-year-old Luke Evans, instead of 45-year-old Elba. But there was no bad blood. “I love you, Luke, you know that,” said Elba.

Condon, too, remains a fan of Beyoncé’s, remarking to Yahoo! Movies that her visual album Lemonade may be the future of the movie musical. And even without Beyoncé’s talents, Beauty and the Beast made more than a billion dollars at the worldwide box office. As Knowles herself said, “Always stay gracious, best revenge is your papers.”

Idris Elba Auditioned for the Role of Gaston in 'Beauty and the Beast'

There’s no man in town as admired as Gaston; he’s everyone’s favorite guy. And according to a new interview with People, Idris Elba, everyone’s other favorite guy, almost played that “man among men” in this year’s live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast.

After talking with People about his musical theater background (and singing a snippet from a Guys and Dolls song), Elba revealed what could’ve been. “I honestly love musicals,” he said. “I auditioned for Beauty and the Beast. I really did, for Gaston.” He continued, “I called, I said, ‘Listen, I want in!’ They were like, ‘Ah, uh, ah, OK!’ So somewhere they have a tape of me singing.”

Sadly, Elba flatly refused to re-create the audition during the interview. “Here’s the thing: No,” he said, since, after all, “I didn’t get the part.” The 45-year-old also joked that the casting directors probably thought he was “a little old” and that he resented Luke Evans, who ended up landing the role of Gaston, “only a little bit.” He quickly added, “No, I love you, Luke, you know that. Great actor.”

Honestly, as incredible as he would’ve undoubtedly been in the villainous role, it’s probably for the best that Elba was passed over. Look on the bright side: Seeing the Luther star embodying Gaston’s toxic masculinity and rampant misogyny would’ve been tragic for Idris Elba fans. This way, the Internet’s campaign for him to be the next James Bond—which needs to happen—can continue, unfettered by any clips or GIFs of him saying Gaston’s problematic lines.

That said, it would be totally fine if he were to get cast in a new revival of Guys and Dolls and got to show off his impressive singing chops once again.
