While most eyes tend to be on the red carpet when it comes to finding the most jaw-dropping fashion moments during award season, it seems music’s biggest stars brought their A-game to the entire2020 Grammys weekend.
Starting at Roc Nation’s THE BRUNCH on Saturday afternoon and continuing into Clive Davis’s annual pre-Grammys gala—which honored Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs this year—everyone from Rihanna to Priyanka Chopra to Dua Lipa wow’ed in unexpected, gorgeous, and memorable looks. Take, for instance, Beyoncé who had two perfect outfits this weekend. She first turned heads at Roc Nation’s event in a gray blazer-inspired dress by Italian designer Francesco Murano. For the evening, the singer swapped her mini dress for a red, floor-length silk gown by Valdrin Sahiti that featured a very high slit.

As for who we expect to take home statues: The Recording Academy, along with the rest of the world, seemed to have fallen in love with Lizzo, as the singer-rapper-flautist was nominated in eight major categories, including Album of the Year for Cuz I Love You. Her viral hit “Truth Hurts” was nominated for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, capping off what’s been an incredible year for her.
The Academy also embraced young artists like Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X. Lana Del Rey received nominations for her album Norman Fucking Rockwell!, while Ariana Grande’s album Thank U, Next was recognized in the Best Pop Vocal category along with Taylor Swift’s “Lover”. Here’s the full list of 2020 Grammy Award nominees.
This week Chrissy Teigen was recognized at the Baby2Baby Gala, where her husband John Legend presented her with the Giving Tree Award to mark her commitment to advocating for children in need. It was a pretty serious event with an important message and during her speech, Teigen said she was “honored” to use her platform to help get basic necessities for children living in poverty. However, because she’s Chrissy Teigen, she wasn’t serious for too long; Once she got home, she used the award to troll Legend in the most hilarious way.
After the gala, Teigen shared a Twitter video, shot by Legend, of her redecorating their living room to make space for her latest accolade. In the clip, you can see the model walking directly into her home with Legend in tow, beelining to a shelf filled with his 10 Grammy statues (and various Oscars). As Legend watches, she moves two of his golden gramophones directly out of the way to display her glass award. You can hear Legend mutter, “Wow…oh my God,” in disbelief as he watches his wife rearrange his trophies. Teigen however, replies cheerfully, turning around and exclaiming, “Yay!” All of this is proof that in addition to a wonderful advocate, she’s also still the master at trolling her husband.
During the ceremony, which was held in Culver City, California, Teigen spoke about how she’s instilled the values of giving in her kids. “Luna is no stranger to packing up all of her toys and sending them off, and knowing that people are going to open them and love them more and be so excited by them,” she said, per the New York Times.
And don’t worry, no one is more supportive of Teigen’s efforts than her proud hubby. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Legend spoke lovingly about how Teigen’s celebrity status has eclipsed his own.
“I’m her biggest cheerleader,” he said to VF. “I always think she should do more.”
When Alicia Keys announced two years ago she was swearing off makeup, we cheered her on. Someone was finally pushing back at the absurd expectation that women in Hollywood need to spend hours in hair and makeup before leaving the house. We were also jealous. Not only does she have the voice of a goddess (and the ability to play two freaking pianos at once), she’s got skin like one too.
But Keys is human, and it soon came out (thanks to some intrepid reporting by W) that—like all that rehearsal time she spends in the studio—she puts the same amount of energy into her skin care routine. According to her makeup artist, Dotti, that regimen goes to the tune of $455.
So last night, when a little birdie alerted us to the fact Keys actually was wearing makeup to host the 2019 Grammys, we rang up Dotti immediately to find out how to do your makeup so convincing that it tricks hundreds of journalists to report you’re not wearing any.
Unsurprisingly, it’s all about skin care prep. “We do quite a bit prep before we even get to makeup—we moisturizer, jade roller, and massage,” Dotti tells Glamour. “Prepping for the most important thing. You can put any makeup on top, but it’s about the quality of the skin you put it on that’ll really make it look great.” To get to that place, she says Keys does a lot of the things you can’t get at a bathroom sink, like lasers and facials (sorry), but she does a few solid tricks for making the most of your skin care products. It’s all about layering. “I start with a light serum and moisturizer, just to keep the skin quality lush but not weighed down, and for each one, I roll it in with the jade roller, then do another layer,” she says.
Then, just the way she layers skin care, she does the same with base makeup. She first presses foundation in with a big buffing brush (Rae Morris brushes are her favorite) or Beautyblender, then she rolls it with a jade roller. Next comes another layer of makeup, followed again by jade rolling. “It helps makeup sink into your skin for a more natural glow,” she says. “I think makeup looks best after an hour or two after it’s settled onto your face—this does that instantly. You’ll get makeup on your roller, sure, but that’s fine. It actually helps remove any excess.” As for type of roller she recommends? Dotti got hers 10 years ago and doesn’t remember the brand, but she says investing in real jade (like one from Ling Skincare) is worth it.
And because we’re sure your group chat probably read something like ours, you’re right: Nobody’s chest looks that radiant naturally. Dottie used a self-tanning mitt to rub on Sol de Janeiro Copacabana Bronze Glow Oil (which is basically a shimmery body lotion) in all the places that naturally catch light. “I always use a mitten to put on body makeup,” she says. “It’s easy, there’s no finger marks, and it goes on super even.”
Ariana Grande didn’t attend the Grammys Sunday night (February 10), but she certainly had the entire Internet talking. She first did this by posting several photos of herself lounging around in the Zac Posen dress she planned on wearing to the ceremony. (Grande was slated to perform, but she opted out after reported creative differences with Grammys producers.) She raised eyebrows during the actual ceremony, though, by tweeting a series of pointed messages after her ex-boyfriend, the late Mac Miller, lost Best Rap Album to Cardi B.
Here’s what happened, according to People. Shortly after Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy scooped up Best Rap Album, Grande tweeted—and then deleted—the words “literal bullshit,” “fuck,” and “trash.” A few fans read this as Grande shading Cardi B, but she later clarified the comments.
“Nothing to do with her. Good for her. I promise. I’m sorry,” Grande tweeted, according to People. She then added, “She’s not at all [trash] and that’s not what I meant and you know that.” Again, all these messages have since been deleted.
“It has nothing to do with Cardi,” a source tells People. Rather, Grande is reportedly upset Miller’s parents, Karen Meyer and Mark McCormick, attended the show—per the Grammys’ invitation—and he didn’t win.
When a fan pointed this out on Twitter, Grande replied, “This. This is what I meant. Karen was gonna have a green suit made.” (This tweet has also been deleted.)
Ariana Grande released her fifth studio album, Thank U, Next, this past Friday, February 8. Fans think she references Miller throughout the album, particularly on a song called “Ghostin.” “I know that it breaks your heart when I cry again over him / I know that it breaks your heart when I cry again / ‘Stead of ghostin’ him,” she sings, which some theorize is her alluding to missing Miller when she was with her most recent ex, Pete Davidson. Dua Lipa gave an interview last night on the Grammys red carpet that quickly went viral. When asked by Ryan Seacrest what it means that the Best New Artist category was dominated by women this year, the “New Rules” singer replied, “It says we’re finally stepping up.” That might not seem buzzy on the surface, but remember what Recording Academy president Neil Portnow told Variety about the Grammys’ male-heavy lineup last year: “Women who have the creativity in their hearts and souls, who want to be musicians, who want to be engineers, producers, and want to be part of the industry on the executive level…[they need] to step up because I think they would be welcome.” Most people took Lipa’s sound bite as some thinly veiled shade at Portnow; whether or not that’s the case is up for debate, but one thing is certain: Women owned the Grammys this year.
Let’s start with the actual wins, which included some historic moments. Cardi B became the first solo woman to take home the Best Rap Album award for Invasion of Privacy. (Lauryn Hill is the only other woman to win this award, in 1997 as part of the hip-hop group Fugees.) The “Money” performer was visibly moved during her acceptance speech, at one point joking, “I’m sorry, the nerves are so bad. Maybe I need to start smoking weed.”
Equally as stunned during her acceptance speech was Dua Lipa, who won Best New Artist (other nominees included Chloe x Halle, Greta Van Fleet, H.E.R., Margo Price, Bebe Rexha, Jorja Smith, and only one male: Luke Combs). “No matter where you’re from, or your background, or what you believe in, never let that get in the way of you and your dreams, because you deserve it,” she said, holding back tears. One of the women in Lipa’s category, H.E.R., went on to take home the prize for Best R&B Album, further fueling the girl-power vibes of the evening.
It was also a big night for Kacey Musgraves, whose critically acclaimed Golden Hour took home Album of the Year, the evening’s top honor. She also won three awards in the country-music categories. “I think that women have a really necessary perspective to art, to music, and it’s really nice to see that getting a chance to be included,” she told The Hollywood Reporter, which reports a whopping 31 women took home Grammy Awards last night.
Another one of those women was Lady Gaga, a Grammys staple who used her acceptance speech for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance to make an important statement about mental health. “I’m so proud to be a part of a movie that addresses mental health issues,” she said. “They’re so important. And a lot of artists deal with that, and we’ve got to take care of each other. So if you see somebody that’s hurting, don’t look away. And if you’re hurting, even though it might be hard, try to find that bravery within yourself to dive deep and go tell somebody and take them up in your head with you.”
Let’s also not forget that Gaga took the stage alongside Michelle Obama, Jennifer Lopez, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Alicia Keys for a segment that perfectly set the tone for the evening. Each woman spoke to the healing and universal power of music. “Music has always helped me tell my story, and I know that’s true for everybody here,” Obama said, to the rapturous applause of the audience. Alicia Keys emceed the evening’s festivities, as well—and she crushed it.

And then there were all the showstopping performances, the best of which came from female performers. The undisputed highlights were Cardi B’s lavish rendition of “Money” and Gaga’s glam-pop take on “Shallow.”
Of course, we’ve always known that Neil Portnow from the Recording Academy was wrong—women in music have been “stepping it up” for years. But if he still had any doubts, last night certainly shut that down.
