The Best 23 No-Makeup Makeup Products for a Natural Look 2019

It’s no secret that the no makeup look is a lie. It’s really just a look that can only be achieved with makeup and, often, quite a lot of it. No one just wakes up with a Glossier level glow. That is unless they somehow manage to get eight hours of sleep every night, avoid stress at all cost and don’t occasionally eat a hot cheeto or two. We all have issues—pores, dark under-eye circles, blemishes, etc—so of course we all need a good concealer, nude lip, or perfect eyebrow pencil every now and then. There’s no shame in that.

The reality though is that even if the no makeup look requires actual products, it doesn’t require a ton of time. All you have to do is find the products that really work, a hydrating barely-there base, a blendable blush or cheek tint and some nude lip and eye makeup, and you can use them every morning. Here are the 23 ones we’d recommend you consider. They’ll help you get out the door quick while making it seem like all you did was roll out of bed—in the best way.

The Secret to Alicia Keys' No-Makeup Makeup at the 2019 Grammys

When Alicia Keys announced two years ago she was swearing off makeup, we cheered her on. Someone was finally pushing back at the absurd expectation that women in Hollywood need to spend hours in hair and makeup before leaving the house. We were also jealous. Not only does she have the voice of a goddess (and the ability to play two freaking pianos at once), she’s got skin like one too.

But Keys is human, and it soon came out (thanks to some intrepid reporting by W) that—like all that rehearsal time she spends in the studio—she puts the same amount of energy into her skin care routine. According to her makeup artist, Dotti, that regimen goes to the tune of $455.

So last night, when a little birdie alerted us to the fact Keys actually was wearing makeup to host the 2019 Grammys, we rang up Dotti immediately to find out how to do your makeup so convincing that it tricks hundreds of journalists to report you’re not wearing any.

Unsurprisingly, it’s all about skin care prep. “We do quite a bit prep before we even get to makeup—we moisturizer, jade roller, and massage,” Dotti tells Glamour. “Prepping for the most important thing. You can put any makeup on top, but it’s about the quality of the skin you put it on that’ll really make it look great.” To get to that place, she says Keys does a lot of the things you can’t get at a bathroom sink, like lasers and facials (sorry), but she does a few solid tricks for making the most of your skin care products. It’s all about layering. “I start with a light serum and moisturizer, just to keep the skin quality lush but not weighed down, and for each one, I roll it in with the jade roller, then do another layer,” she says.

The same trick goes for making foundation look virtually undetectable—yes, even drugstore formulas. “I like to break down foundation by mixing it with face oil until it literally becomes translucent,” says Dotti, who used Burt’s Bees Full Coverage Liquid Makeup in Walnut and Deep Maple mixed with the brand’s Complete Nourishment Facial Oil on Keys last night.

Then, just the way she layers skin care, she does the same with base makeup. She first presses foundation in with a big buffing brush (Rae Morris brushes are her favorite) or Beautyblender, then she rolls it with a jade roller. Next comes another layer of makeup, followed again by jade rolling. “It helps makeup sink into your skin for a more natural glow,” she says. “I think makeup looks best after an hour or two after it’s settled onto your face—this does that instantly. You’ll get makeup on your roller, sure, but that’s fine. It actually helps remove any excess.” As for type of roller she recommends? Dotti got hers 10 years ago and doesn’t remember the brand, but she says investing in real jade (like one from Ling Skincare) is worth it.

And because we’re sure your group chat probably read something like ours, you’re right: Nobody’s chest looks that radiant naturally. Dottie used a self-tanning mitt to rub on Sol de Janeiro Copacabana Bronze Glow Oil (which is basically a shimmery body lotion) in all the places that naturally catch light. “I always use a mitten to put on body makeup,” she says. “It’s easy, there’s no finger marks, and it goes on super even.”

Chrissy Teigen's No-Makeup Selfie Needs 'No Filter Necessary'

The sun shines, and Chrissy Teigen continues to be a bright spot on social media. The model and author has a voice entirely her own on Twitter and Instagram, and you could compare her updates to little pebbles of joy you collect and cherish during the times when social media takes a dark turn (as it’s wont to do these days). And when her husband, John Legend, gets in the mix, only good things ensue.

For example, there was that time Teigen and Legend prom-ified a movie night, complete with a homemade corsage and the quintessential prom pose photos. They’re like that couple that’s revoltingly cute, but just funny and self-aware enough about it that you want to third-wheel every date. And it’s not all jokes and faux Twitter feuds: Legend just posted a no-filter, barefaced photo of Teigen to Instagram, and his caption will yet again make your heart melt.

The two are currently vacationing in the Mediterranean, and yesterday Legend snapped a shot of Teigen and commented, “No filter necessary.” The man’s not wrong; Teigen is giving off a rosy glow. I mean, that skin! The photo takes on added significance when you consider what’s been going down with the star lately: as an avid social media user, Teigen’s recently opened up about the stress the platforms bring, saying that Instagram often makes her feel “insanely inadequate.”

Add in discovering an entire online forum created to hate on her, and it’s admirable that Teigen has the grit to continue standing up to trolls and mommy-shamers alike. So, this makes yesterday’s peaceful Instagram all the more impressive.

Even with the naysayers, the two appreciate Teigen as is. No makeup, period zits and all.

Gabrielle Union Just Celebrated Her Freckled Skin With a No-Makeup Selfie

Even with our world’s recent surge toward promoting self-love and self-acceptance, posting a selfie on Instagram can still feel like a high-wire act. For example, for my best selfie, I apply a full-on face of makeup, look directly into an almost blinding lamp, and stick to my one favorite angle (I have found what works, and I will never change). And for celebrities with fans and paparazzi putting every picture under a microscope, all that stress has to be at least fifty-fold. So when one of them promptly says “Eff it” and posts a makeup-free selfie, it’s incredible—much like Gabrielle Union‘s skin in the barefaced selfie she just posted on Instagram.

But Union is a hero, we knew this. While she was promoting her hair care line, Flawless by Gabrielle Union, she outspokenly advocated for self-acceptance and loving yourself as you are. It’d be easy to take that with a grain of salt—I mean, she’s Gabrielle Union—but speaking to Glamour about her hair care journey in March, she explained it hasn’t always been simple. She said: “Over time I also got introduced to wearing weaves and extensions, and the immediate difference in the amount of attention I got was palpable. I felt like the longer my hair, the more attractive I was in the audition rooms.” Over 20 years later, she says, “I’ve finally gotten to a place of self-acceptance and recognizing that my natural hair is beautiful—and so is whatever weave I may wear. And that makes me a happy person in my life.”

Now it seems like she’s taking a similar approach to her freckles, captioning her selfie, “No filter, freckles galore.” It’s unclear if they were ever a pain point for the actress, but as the reaction to Selena Gomez’s “Fetish” video illustrated, freckles are something people have very many feelings about. Regardless where you fall, props to Union for walking the walk of self-acceptance that she talks about.

PHOTO: Instagram / @gabunion

Posted live from her aesthetician’s office in California, per her Instagram story, Union just got an Intraceuticals oxygen facial, and she legitimately glows (she goes to Glam Boutique Spa in Woodland Hills, California, so BRB, going to there immediately). Thank advancements in skin care technology: The facial involves 95 percent oxygen being shot into your skin to increase circulation and collagen production, and Union’s selfie alone is making a good, hard sell. If you can’t get to there, oxygenated face masks are the at-home alternative. Maybe while staring at Union’s photo with your fingers crossed, if you feel like it.
