Grammys 2019: The Biggest Moments

The 2019 Grammys aired on Sunday night (February 10), and it was a high-energy show. Not only were the performances on-point—I’m still not over Cardi B’s, TBH—but there were some emotional, powerful speeches, not to mention so much epic red-carpet fashion.

Below, check out all the moments you need to know about from the 2019 Grammys:

Lady Gaga, Jada Pinkett Smith, Michelle Obama, Alicia Keys and Jennifer Lopez all graced the stage at the same time. They each talked about how the odds were stacked against them in their respective careers. It was such a badass moment.

Lady Gaga addressing mental health during one of her acceptance speeches. “I’m so proud to be a part of a movie that addresses mental health issues,” she said. “They’re so important. And a lot of artists deal with that, and we’ve got to take care of each other. So if you see somebody that’s hurting don’t look away. And if you’re hurting, even though it might be hard, try to find that bravery within yourself to dive deep and go tell somebody and take them up in your head with you.”

Camila Cabello, J. Balvin, Ricky Martin, and Dr. Arturo Sandoval’s opening performance. Their energetic renditions of “Havana” and “Mi Gente”kicked off the night perfectly.

Kacey Musgraves’ beautiful performance of “Rainbow.” It was simple and powerful. Musgraves’ Golden Hour album is one of the best records of 2018, full stop. Thank God it won the trophies for Best Country Album and Album of the Year.

Janelle Monáe serving production during her performance of “Make Me Feel.” In a sea of mostly acoustic performances, Monáe’s punchy set was a breath of fresh, pop-music air.

Jennifer Lopez’s instantly-iconic hat. It was large and in charge. Twitter couldn’t get enough of it.

Childish Gambino winning Song of the Year and Record of the Year for “This Is America.” So deserved. “This Is America” is arguably the most important piece of music to come out of 2018.

That star-studded Dolly Parton tribute. So many of your faves came out to tribute the Queen of Country, including Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, and Kacey Musgraves. Parton herself also hit the stage to belt a few of her hits.

Ariana Grande just lounging around in her Grammys dress. She didn’t attend the show, but that didn’t stop her from wearing the custom Zac Posen gown she had prepped.

Cardi B’s performance of “Money.” This was, hands down, the best performance of the evening. Cardi brought out all the stops for this one: a flock of dancers, a piano player, and a show-stopping outfit. We are absolutely bopping and stanning.

Diana Ross’ performance. In celebration of her 75th birthday, Ross sang a medley of her greatest hits while wearing the most fabulous red dress.

Lady Gaga’s chills-inducing rendition of “Shallow.” She went full-on pop star for this performance, wearing a bedazzled jumpsuit and belting the award-winning tune like it was “Bad Romance.” I’m still recovering.

Jennifer Lopez’s tribute to Motown. Choreography! Outfit changes! Literal gymnastics! Someone please tell me why she hasn’t played halftime at the Super Bowl yet.

Cardi B winning Best Rap Album for Invasion of Privacy. She was truly taken aback in her speech, joking her nerves were so bad she’s considering smoking weed. This makes Cardi B the first solo woman to win Best Rap Album.

Dua Lipa winning Best New Artist. She gave one of the most heartfelt speeches of the night. “No matter where you’re from, or your background, or what you believe in, never let that get in the way of you and your dreams, because you deserve it,” she said.

Grammys 2019: Lady Gaga's Acceptance Speech Addresses Mental Health

Lady Gaga took home took home the award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Shallow” from A Star Is Born at the 2019 Grammys on Sunday night (February 10), and she used her speech as an opportunity to talk about mental health and the importance of reaching out for help.

“I’m so proud to be a part of a movie that addresses mental health issues,” Gaga said.

Watch Lady Gaga‘s speech for yourself, below:

Fans took to Twitter to applaud Gaga for her candor:

Gaga has been quite open about her struggles with mental health. “One in four of us will have to deal with a mental health condition at some point in our lives, and if we’re not directly affected, someone we care for is likely to be,” Gaga and Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the World Health Organization, wrote in an essay for The Guardian back in October 2018 . “Yet despite the universality of the issue, we struggle to talk about it openly or to offer adequate care or resources. Within families and communities, we often remain silenced by a shame that tells us that those with mental illness are somehow less worthy or at fault for their own suffering.”

Gaga’s already won three Grammys this evening, two for “Shallow” from A Star Is Born and one for “Joanne (Where Do You Think You’re Goin’?).” “I’m not gonna be able to wear any makeup tonight,” she wrote in an emotional tweet celebrating her wins. A star really is born.

Ariana Grande Didn't Go to the 2019 Grammys, But She Still Wore Her Zac Posen Gown

While the 2019 Grammys were a star-studded event, there was one pop star noticeably missing: Ariana Grande. She was originally supposed to perform at the ceremony, but pulled out following a creative dispute with the show’s producers—and it caused drama. (You can catch up on all of it here.) But Grande already had a dress picked out—custom made, even—and she wasn’t about to let it hang in her closet, unworn.

On Sunday night, Grande got all dressed up in the gown Zac Posen made for her and staged a photoshoot, presumably in her apartment, to capture all the angles of this look.

“when @zacposen makes u a custom gown it doesn’t matter if you’re singing or not… thank u,” she captioned one image.

Even though she wasn’t in attendance, Grande did take home a Grammy, for Best Pop Vocal Album.

Because she wasn’t there to accept the award in person, she shared her thanks on Instagram: “I know I’m not there tonight (trust, I tried and still truly wished it had worked out TBH) and I know i said I try not to put too much weight into these things …. but fuck …….this is wild and beautiful. Thank you so much.”

The trophy is nice, obviously. But judging by how fun this impromptu shoot looked, Grande had a winning Sunday evening regardless of whether she won her category. May we all bring this energy with us into Monday.

Grammys 2019: Hair and Makeup Looks You Can't Miss

At this point in the game, we’re deep in awards season—and that means we’ve had plenty of hair and makeup looks to ooh and ah over. Take, for example, the blue eyeshadow at the Golden Globes or affordable beauty moments at the SAGs.

But tonight’s Grammy Awards brought a little something extra to the table. Movie stars always look glam, of course, but women in music tend to have fun with their looks. And where better to show that off than the Grammys? How could we forget Gaga’s iconic egg entrance or Alicia Keys’ makeup free statement? (Which, by the way, she did again tonight.) We can only expect more iconic looks that will have people talking for years to come.

Between Cardi B’s braided updo and Dua Lipa’s statement mani, there have been plenty of looks that’ve made us shout at our TV. Check out our favorite looks from the night, below. We’ll be adding more details as they roll in throughout the evening.

Grammys 2019: All the Looks From the Red Carpet

The Grammys aren’t just the biggest night in music—they’re one of the most consistently epic red carpets in Hollywood. This is the event that gave us Rihanna’s 2015 Giambattista Valli princess gown, Lady Gaga’s 2010 interstellar Armani Privé ensemble, and, of course, Jennifer Lopez’s 2000 plunging Versace dress. (Here’s a refresher on the most talked-about Grammys looks of awards season of all time.) And with J.Lo, Cardi B, and more big names slated to attend the 2019 event, you know the red carpet is going to be major.

At the Grammys 2019, this tradition of head-turning style is still going strong—with Camila Cabello in a magenta sequined gown, Kacey Musgraves in a white tulle dress, and Alessia Cara in a black lace gown. Ahead, check out every single look from the red carpet, and take your guess as to which one will make it into the fashion history books.

Chrissy Teigen Invited Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to Watch the Grammys

In some very good news this week, Chrissy Teigen and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez might be forming a power friendship of our dreams. In a tweet yesterday, Teigen reached out to the powerhouse junior Congresswoman and point-blank asked her if she wanted to come over to her house to watch the Grammys and eat pizza. And, by the looks of things, AOC is in.

Teigen sent the Internet into fangirl mode when she decided to entice Ocasio-Cortez, the youngest Congresswoman in history, with a hangout that included pizza. “@AOC hello my hero, do you wanna come over and watch the grammys with us? there will be pizza,” she wrote.

Modern Family actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who’s apparently also invited to this watchparty/meeting of the minds, quickly chimed in and gallantly offered AOC his slice of pizza if she accepted the invitation.

He also used the opportunity to troll Teigen just a little bit. “Jesse will [be] here! help me!! tell her we are normal,” Teigen tweeted to Tyler Ferguson. His response? “I can only speak for myself Chrissy. Although, you are usually pretty good at staying chill.”

Luckily, it doesn’t seem like AOC needed anyone to twist her arm too much. Within a few hours, she’d tweeted back with enthusiasm. “yes! we can live-tweet me burning something in the kitchen,” she said.

Chrissy, as always, had the perfect response: “perfect! we have extremely different strengths except I still sometimes burn things.”

It’s unclear if Ocasio-Cortez will actually make an appearance at the party, but, gotta say, a friendship between these two would be perfect. Both women have been proud, outspoken figures who stand up for what they believe in—AOC in politics and Teigen in the entertainment business. Plus, they’re both unmatched social media mavericks who know how to jostle between being passionate and absolutely hilarious. On Sunday night, we’ll be crossing our figures that our social media timelines get blessed with appearances from these (hopefully) future BFFs. Plus, from what we saw during John Legend’s 40th birthday, Teigen knows how to throw a pretty epic party.
