Quarantining Away From My Husband Brought Out the Best in Me

With my husband now on his way home from the hospital, I sat our daughter in front of cartoons and sprang into action, throwing a week’s worth of my basic necessities into the living room: underwear, T-shirts, sleep clothes, a toothbrush, pillows, power cords, and my Dr. Dennis Gross Ferulic + Retinol Wrinkle Recovery Overnight Serum. The “old” me would’ve pleaded with him not to self-isolate because it would have soothed my anxiety, but for whatever reason, call it the COVID era, I felt courageous. I was swift and efficient, gliding around and moving furniture to assemble a pop-up bedroom for myself. Maybe I was being over the top (it’s certainly something I’ve been guilty of in the past) but these were unfamiliar times.

Once he arrived he quarantined himself in our bedroom, where he would live and work alone for the foreseeable future. It was a hard decision but we both knew it was smart. I saw outlines of his face through a filthy patio screen, and I fed him by opening up the basement door, which he had access to from the bedroom, and sliding in plates of food across the floor.

Five days into his self-quarantine our governor Gavin Newsom announced a statewide shelter-in-place. Not that I was going anywhere, but life felt especially foggy in that moment. I craved a reassuring hug that would tell me we’d be okay.

Quarantining together but apart was taking its toll. Mealtimes were a blur. I’d cook whatever I could get our toddler to eat, then slide my husband’s food to him atop a storage lid I’d fashioned into a tray (somehow this felt more sterile at the time). Afterwards, I’d disinfect with Lysol all plates and silverware he’d touched. Then the dog ate. Then I ate. Rinse, repeat. A few days, I was so wrapped up in juggling newly single parenthood and working that I completely forgot to feed my husband at all. My stress peaked any time our daughter called out for Dada or tried to open up the bedroom door.

But as I got into a rhythm, I found an unexpected sense of peace. Every morning I woke up in the living room ahead of our daughter, stretched and thanked my bones for tolerating the couch that sounded like it would be comfortable at the time of purchase, and dug into work emails, relishing the quiet of being all alone. I’ve missed out on so many things because of anticipatory anxiety—thinking about the possibility of a panic attack has caused me to do everything from chaotically canceling vacations to delaying motherhood for years because I feared being pregnant and anxious. Yet here I was, on day whatever, managing more calmly and more focused than I thought I was capable of.

When my husband finally emerged symptom-free from his self-isolation I’d stopped counting the days. I’d sat with fear and the unknown—things I’d always avoided—without him for longer than I thought I could ever tolerate. Isolating him in a section of the house without the ability to explain to our daughter why she couldn’t see her dad was stressful (though not nearly as trying as other things people are experiencing across the country). Wondering if my husband would come down with COVID-19 symptoms punctuated the intensity of my own isolation. At some point, though, I was just too tired to think anymore about the what ifs.

When we finally hugged, emotion roared inside of me. But it was because I’d genuinely missed his face—not because I needed to be helped.

The seemingly benign memory of self-quarantining away from my spouse enabled me to sit with something I’ve spent my life avoiding: the agony of being out of control. I succeeded, and hope I can find a way to remember it.

Music's Biggest Stars Brought Their Fashion A-Game to Grammys Weekend

While most eyes tend to be on the red carpet when it comes to finding the most jaw-dropping fashion moments during award season, it seems music’s biggest stars brought their A-game to the entire 2020 Grammys weekend.

Starting at Roc Nation’s THE BRUNCH on Saturday afternoon and continuing into Clive Davis’s annual pre-Grammys gala—which honored Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs this year—everyone from Rihanna to Priyanka Chopra to Dua Lipa wow’ed in unexpected, gorgeous, and memorable looks. Take, for instance, Beyoncé who had two perfect outfits this weekend. She first turned heads at Roc Nation’s event in a gray blazer-inspired dress by Italian designer Francesco Murano. For the evening, the singer swapped her mini dress for a red, floor-length silk gown by Valdrin Sahiti that featured a very high slit.

If this is what celebs had in store for us before the Grammys, we can’t wait to see what goes down on the red carpet.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Brought Archie to His First Official Royal Engagement

Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, welcome to the family business. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle brought their son to his first royal engagement today, September 25, in South Africa—and what a momentous one it was. While we knew the littlest royal joined his parents on the royal tour to Africa, it wasn’t known if or when he would make an official appearance. But today, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex brought the almost five-month-old to meet Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his daughter, Thandeka. Per the Sussex Royal Instagram, the royals are meeting to learn more about the work of The Tutu and Leah Legacy Foundation.

Archie sightings have been fairly scarce since his birth in May, as Meghan and Harry have made it clear that they are trying to maintain as normal and private a life for their son as they can, given their positions. We first met him a few days after he was born and then have been left to a few photos on their Instagram and the official christening images.

But, oh how he’s grown over the past few months—and we’ve also got video of the adorable little guy his parents appear to call “Arch.” (And who doesn’t love baby giggles?)

No One Asked About Abortion at the Third Democratic Debate. With Kirsten Gillibrand Out of the Race, No One Brought It Up, Either

It has become an almost tragic joke. Another marathon television event with hours of talk about healthcare, but no mention of abortion, birth control, Title X, or President Donald Trump’s crusade against Planned Parenthood. Last night, ABC News held the third 2020 debate Houston. It was also the third presidential debate ever to include more than one token “woman” on stage, which was good and historic, but you might not have known it from the conversation.

At the end of what felt like four thousand hours of discussion about guns, war, Medicare For All, and immigration, I counted zero questions about not just abortion, but paid leave, child care, or the lethal misogyny that has become its own national crisis in America. The moderators did ask (more than once) about health care, but no candidates used those opportunities to talk about abortion, such a common procedure that more than one in four women have one at some point in their lifetimes.

Instead, we had health care debates that focus on prescription drugs, but didn’t mention a prescription drug that millions of women take daily—the pill. While the candidates made their disdain for our current president clear, none mentioned the fact that he once suggested women should be punished for having abortions, has been accused of sexual assault over a dozen times, or cheated on his third wife with an adult film star whom he then disparaged and paid off. In short, to claim that the President of the United States is a misogynist seems almost unfair to misogynists. He’s at war with 51 percent of the population, some of whom, sure, vote for him. But his relentless crusade against women’s rights is treated as basically a political ploy and not an actual ideology with deadly consequences.

Or at least, that’s how it’s treated now that Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) is out of the race. In her campaign and at debates, Gillibrand repeatedly raised “women’s issues.” But she dropped out of the race a few weeks ago, because she couldn’t qualify for last night’s debate and also because a lot of people still blame her for kneecapping former Senator Al Franken for (of course!) his alleged mistreatment of women.

To be honest, I was never a Gillibrand fan. From the start, there were other candidates I liked better. But I also can admit I found her “grating” and even a little “unlikable,” which, sure, could be the internalized sexism talking. Regardless, last night, it occurred to me that the only person who had even tried to center Me Too, women’s healthcare, sexual assault, paid leave, and those other denigrated “women’s issues” in their campaign was Kirsten Gillibrand. Gillibrand was for women what Washington Governor Jay Inslee was for climate, taking an under-discussed, but urgent issue and making it the center of her campaign. She and he have both since dropped out of the race (even as lesser candidates like Marianne Williamson and Mayor Bill De Blasio remain). But while Inslee’s proposals on climate have been praised across the board and Elizabeth Warren liked them so much she adopted his entire plan, Gillibrand’s platform has been more or less erased. It’s as if what candidates learned from Gillibrand’s run is…not to talk about women at all.

Brie Larson Brought Her ‘Captain Marvel’ Stunt Doubles Onstage During the 2019 MTV Movie & TV Awards

Captain Marvel broke all kinds of records when it hit theaters in March 2019. It raked in $455 million its opening weekend, it was created by a team of powerful women, and it introduced audiences to a new kind of female superhero. Brie Larson, the star of the film, got tons of recognition for her work in such a badass production; however, when she was given the Best Fight trophy at the MTV Movie & TV Awards on Monday, she made it clear there were some unsung heroes who needed serious credit. So she went onstage to accept the award alongside her stunt doubles Renae Moneymaker and Joanna Bennett.

Larson made sure the spotlight was on Moneymaker and Bennett, who both worked intensely by her side on Captain Marvel. Stunt doubles often fly under the radar in action films, and they don’t always get recognized for their dedication. Larson wanted to change that, so the Oscar winner and new director completely turned the attention to her friends and colleagues.

“I wanted to take this moment to really say thank you to the two women who are standing here beside me,” Larson said. “These are the women that trained me and were also the stunt doubles for Captain Marvel. I could not have made this film without them. They are really the baseline of who she is. They are the living embodiment of Captain Marvel.”

After introducing them, Larson cheered, “Say whatever you want!” and turned the mic over to the two professionals, who have also been stunt doubles on Wonder Woman, Avengers: Endgame, and X-Men, to name a few. Bennett talked about how exciting it was to bring a strong female character to life, while Moneymaker recalled the female characters who had influenced her own career.

“As young girls, we wanted to be just like Lara Croft and G.I. Jane, so it’s a real honor to be a part of this character and hopefully pass along some of that inspiration and strength that those iconic women brought to us,” she said. “And lastly, a big thank you to Brie for acknowledging our role in this film. It’s truly a rare acknowledgement, and it means so much not only to both of us, but to the entire stunt community.”

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas Reportedly Visited Baby Archie—And Brought Expensive Gifts

UPDATE: 10:15 A.M., June 1, 2019:

Priyanka Chopra has said that The Sun‘s story about her meeting Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s baby Archie is not, in fact, true. “While these are great gift ideas… this story is untrue, and I was actually in town for work,” she tweeted. “I hope whoever this ‘source’ is starts checking their facts more often.”

Reporter Emily Andrews also responded on Twitter, writing, “Not quite sure what’s going on with this, but I wouldn’t publish something without having it confirmed. I had three separate sources for this story but if Priyanka says she didn’t visit Meghan & Archie then fair enough…”

Original Story:

He’s not even a month old, but Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, the first child of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, has had quite the schedule since he was born on May 6.

Archie’s met Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, Kate Middleton and Prince William, and Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla, of course, but it’s not just his famous family who have stopped by. Serena Williams visited Frogmore Cottage ahead of the French Open to meet Archie, and now another A-list friend of Markle’s has come to Windsor as well.

The Sun‘s Emily Andrews reports that Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas have also met Master Archie. “They thought baby Archie was just adorable and Meg is loving her new life,” a friend told the paper. “She looked fantastic and has taken to life as a mum swimmingly.”

Unsurprisingly, the Chopra-Jonases came bearing gifts for the youngest royal. The Sun reports that Chopra picked out a few items from Tiffany, including a $250 sterling silver bubble blower with a Tiffany blue accent.

Chopra was a guest (sans Jonas) at Markle and Prince Harry’s royal wedding last May, and the two have been friends for years. Unfortunately, though, the women were at the center of rumors a few months back alleging they were feuding because the Sussexes didn’t attend Chopra’s wedding in India.

“Their friendship is over unless Meghan apologizes,” a source told Page Six in February. “Priyanka is a huge international star with a tremendous social media following. She is probably more famous worldwide than Meghan is. She feels Meghan didn’t respect her, and didn’t respect their friendship.”

But Chopra put those rumors to rest in March during an appearance on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live when she was asked if this alleged “feud” was why she didn’t attend Markle’s New York baby shower. “Oh my God, no. It’s not true,” she said, laughing.
