Netflix’s ‘Too Hot to Handle’ Review: This Is the Funniest, Least Sexy Reality Show About Sex

If I found myself cringing every time some shirtless and bikini-clad contestant on Too Hot to Handle kissed, it wasn’t because of their awkward “banter” or even the fact that they were throwing away thousands of dollars for the privilege. It was undoubtedly because I watched the Netflix reality dating series deep into quarantine, where even the idea of shaking someone’s hand was already out of the question.

Despite the almost other-worldly effect this had on my viewing experience, there’s something inherently now and inevitable about this show. Centered around a group of 20-something hots, the Too Hot to Handle retreat is governed by an A.I. cone named LANA who puts the contestants through various challenges, sends them on dates, and punishes them if they fail to remain chaste: that means no kissing, no sex, and no masturbating if they want to win $100,000 at the end of the retreat. When any of the contestants breaks the rules (and yes, they do…a lot) she calls them out in front of everyone and brings the pot down based on the infraction.

“[A.I.] is literally everywhere around us. It’s kind of governing us, it’s taking over,” showrunner and executive producer Viki Kolar tells me over the phone on a group call with Jonno Richards, the show’s executive producer and managing director of Talkback, the production company behind Too Hot To Handle.

“You’re used to hearing A.I. in terms of algorithms and research and listening and advice,” Richards agrees. “It just sort of all kind of fitted together.”

However, despite the LANA of it all, there’s actually not a lot of proven psychology behind the Too Hot to Handle method of building stronger, healthier relationships by abstaining from sex…but that was never really the main point of the series. In fact, the idea for this social experiment, as Richards repeatedly calls it, started from an episode of Seinfeld called “The Bet,” where each character competes to see if they can avoid masturbating. Spoiler alert: They all fail, not unlike some of Too Hot to Handle’s contestants.

“We wanted to do something that was funny while it was a reality show,” Richards says. “You put obstacles in people’s way and push their buttons in a way that could be comedic, but at the same time are trying to help them come together through that. A sort of romantic comedy, I guess, is what we’re trying to get to.” They definitely got the comedy part down. Aside from the relationships and friendships that form between this group of players—and there is at least one couple that becomes genuinely ship-worthy—this show is just damn funny.

I don’t know if it’s the number of times the word horny was said within each episode, the blinking, judgmental robot, or the socially stunted contestants that make the show so gleefully addictive. Every single confessional with Francesca, Harry, Haley, Matthew, Sharron, Rhonda, Chloe, Kelz, Nicole, and David borders on parody, making it clear they’re at least somewhat in on the joke and it’s okay to laugh. For example, Kolar tells me that Sharron wore a brace on his leg on the flight over to Mexico just to get through security faster. “He’s that type of person that comes up with insane kind of ways of just getting through life,” she says. “I was like, ‘I love him even more.’” Shockingly, you might find yourself rooting for these people too.

Still, maybe it’s narrator Desiree Burch that sets the show apart from similar reality TV series on Netflix and beyond. The voice-over non-host who seems to serve as the audience, chatting throughout the series as if she’s next to you on the couch, is honestly a great perk in the time of social distancing. She’s not always nice about the singles, but she’s always on point.

All I can truly say with conviction is that if Netflix has been using its own algorithm and data to build the most hilarious, binge-able reality dating show, they’ve succeeded with Too Hot to Handle and should probably stop now before they truly go off the rails.

‘Suits’ Made the Funniest Meghan Markle Reference in Last Night’s Episode

It’s been more than a year since the world said goodbye to Meghan Markle‘s Suits character, Rachel Zane. (If you remember, the duchess transitioned out of her acting role just before her wedding to Prince Harry.) But even though the writers had Rachel and her husband, Mike, move to Seattle to start their own law offices at the end of season seven, she popped up again in last night’s episode. Not physically, of course, but in a cute line that referenced both her fate and Markle’s fairy-tale life as a royal.

In the episode, Mike—played by Patrick J. Adams—comes back and fills people in on how Rachel is doing. He answers happily, “If I told you how good, you probably wouldn’t believe me.” The show’s official account tweeted this scene out with a wink, writing, “Turns out Rachel is doing REALLY well,” a clear nod to how Markle has settled into her new life as a royal.

Markle worked on Suits for more than seven years before announcing she was leaving the cast to focus on royal obligations. During her first joint interview with Prince Harry following their engagement in 2017, she explained that she didn’t see the end of her acting career as “giving anything up.”

“It’s a new chapter,” Markle said. “And also, keep in mind, I’d been working on my show for seven years. So we were very, very fortunate to be able to have that sort of longevity on a series. And for me, once we hit the 100-episode marker, I thought, You know what, I have ticked this box, and I feel really proud of the work I’ve done there. And now it’s time to work as a team with [Prince Harry].”

Here’s hoping this isn’t the last Rachel Zane reference Suits makes this season.

Reese Witherspoon Had the Funniest Response to Rumors She and Jennifer Garner Are Pregnant

When you’ve been mega-famous as long as Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Garner have, I’m guessing you probably learn to ignore most of the ridiculous tabloid headlines you glimpse about yourself. But, seeing as how celebrities are also human beings with feelings, the especially outrageous ones can still make them do a double-take—or just give them a good laugh.

Case in point: A recent cover of OK! features a photo of the two women with the headline “Baby Bombshell! Shock and Joy for Hollywood BFFs.” Of course, Witherspoon had the most perfect response to the coverline. She posted the cover on social media with the caption, “Hey @jennifer.garner! Can we raise our imaginary babies together?”

The post obviously struck a chord with other celebs, who quickly chimed in. Gwyneth Paltrow simply commented, “???” while Sara Foster said, “That’s so amazing! Congrats to both of you! How exciting!” Sarah Michelle Gellar wrote, “Only if I can imaginary babysit!” to which Witherspoon responded, “Will you be the imaginary godmother?” Ali Wentworth even offered to throw the shower.

There were also some amazing responses on Twitter where one person wrote, “I often wondered what actors thought while going thru the checkout ? haha.” Another was surprised the story wasn’t about another Jen, “Well, it’s not Jen Anniston [sic] this time, so that’s genuinely surprising. I mean, she’s been pregnant for like 10 years at least ? #DontBelieveTabloids.”

Another user replied, “Oh come on now Rheese [sic], if magazine says it’s true, than it MUST be so! What do you know anyways? Of course they know your body better than you do!! ??”

There’s obviously lots of sarcasm here, but the headline—and some of the Twitter reactions—also raises a good point about tabloids and their continued scrutiny of female celebrities’ bodies. As Jennifer Aniston’s publicist told the New York Times in January, “Every week I get these emails, ‘We’re working on a story that Jennifer is pregnant. I will say, ‘This is a complete fabrication. There’s no truth to this or this is all ridiculous and completely false.’ And they still go with the story.”

We’re guessing that if tabloids decided to finally switch off the pregnancy rumor story cycle, it wouldn’t exactly be met with disappointment in Hollywood.

Chrissy Teigen Had the Funniest Response to Her Latest Mommy-Shamer

Chrissy Teigen has experienced her fair share of mommy-shaming, but she never lets the comments bring her down. In fact, she usually claps back with a funny comment, and the Internet lives for it.

And this is exactly what happened on Monday (July 2). Teigen posted a photo of herself holding Luna and her baby son Miles, and wrote a caption that attempted to preemptively ward off mommy-shamers. “Should I post the one where his head looks unsupported but my face looks good and Luna is over it, the one where his head is supported but my face is just okay and Luna is over it, or him crying and my face looks okay and luna is over it?'” she wrote, clearly in on her own joke.

Check it out for yourself, below:

But the mommy-shamers still came out in full force, criticizing the fact Miles seems to be crying the pic. “You forgot about the sun shining on his face and addressing if you used the proper SPF that’s safe if ingested by and infant [sic],” one person commented. Then, another person wrote, “He doesn’t look too happy with the sun in his little eyes,” to which Teigen had the most perfect reply: “He told me he loves it,” she wrote, according to E! Iconic.

Teigen gave a speech at the Families Belong TogetherMmarch this weekend, while holding baby Miles. “I’m incredibly proud to be the daughter of an immigrant. My mother grew up in a very small village in Thailand and she never lets me forget it,” she said, according to People.

Gal Gadot Just Shared the Funniest 'Wonder Woman' Bloopers on Instagram

PHOTO: ©Warner Bros/courtesy Everett Collection / Everett Collection

Diana Prince (a.k.a Wonder Woman, played by Gal Gadot) is very serious throughout the Wonder Woman film that dropped over the summer, and for good reason. She’s tasked with both defeating Ares and stopping the war outside Themyscira—not exactly chipper stuff. Still, there are funny moments in Wonder Woman mixed in with the many, many shots of Diana being a badass warrior.

But none of those scenes even compare to the silliness that took place behind-the-scenes on set. Gadot just posted a few Wonder Woman outtakes of herself and Chris Pine on Instagram over the weekend, and they’re hilarious. (I mean, they should be—bloopers are funny by definition.) The video is especially great, though, because it’s such a stark contrast to the no-nonsense Diana Prince we watched kick butt in the film.

It’s amazing: Even when they’re tripping, bumping into each other, and spilling ice cream all over their hands, Gadot and Pine are still two of the hottest people alive. Watching these two slam into each other while trying to fit into a door is a work of art, to be honest. In fact, they each deserve Oscars based on this blooper reel alone. Check it out for yourself, below:

“Okay, first, you can see why Chris’s nickname for me was giggle Gadot?,” Gadot captioned the video. “And how Patty and I could communicate with no words. Instead just weird sounds & head movements.. I LOVE to laugh and I ABSOLUTELY enjoyed filming every second of the movie about the Amazonian princess.”

Our only complaint? We wish we had more bloopers! It’s a good thing the Wonder Woman DVD comes out September 19. This is just a small teaser of the funnies to come.
