*This Is Us* Season 3 Episode 9 Recap: We Finally Find Out Who Randall Is Visiting in the Future

Warning: This Is Us spoilers ahead.

This Is Us closed out the first half of season three with not one, not two, but three major cliffhangers for the beloved Pearsons.

After nearly a year of guessing, viewers found out that the “her” in question in the future is actually Rebecca, not Beth or Kate. “The reveal is one piece of the larger picture in terms of what happened with our family as we move through the rest of the series,” executive producer and co-showrunner Elizabeth Berger tells Glamour.com.

However, what wasn’t revealed was the state of Beth’s marriage to Randall or Kate’s marriage to Toby. Considering that both Randall and Toby aren’t wearing wedding rings in the future, what does that mean for the fan-favorite couples? “Everyone is going to have to see what becomes of them,” Berger teases.

And if that wasn’t enough to make viewers sweat, then the big reveal that Nicky Pearson is actually alive most certainly did. “Yes, there’s a lot going on,” executive producer and co-showrunner Isaac Aptaker says. “I can promise we’ll have some very satisfying answers in the immediate episodes when the show returns. It’s worth it.”

Until then, Aptaker and Berger do their best to explain everything that went down in tonight’s fall finale, and where the show will pick up in the new year.

PHOTO: NBC

Glamour: Nicky is alive! Who is the actor that plays him as an older man? It actually looked like it could be Milo Ventimiglia, but perhaps wearing prosthetics.

Isaac Aptaker: That’s top secret! But I promise you it’s not Milo with prosthetics. However, we’ll get the full story on older Nicky very, very soon. We’re going to be along with Kevin as he’s on this quest, with this little nugget of information he’s been given, to try and figure out what the story of his uncle was, and his whereabouts in the present day. We’re going to pick up on this right away, so fans won’t have to wait months and months. ‘All about Nicky ‘will be told by the end of the season.

Bradford, Pennsylvania (where Nicky now lives) is about a four-hour drive from Pittsburgh, so what significance does that town hold?

Elizabeth Berger: You may be seeing some version of that drive in the near future!

Aptaker: Bradford is actually a town where my mom grew up, and I’ve been there once, and it felt like exactly where I would have imagined Nicky would have settled down.

Is that how you decided on Bradford, PA then?

Aptaker: Yeah, well we knew the type of place, and I was like, ‘Actually, I’ve been somewhere that I think is perfect!’

What should viewers take away from the quick glimpse we got into Nicky’s life? Obviously we see him living a rather reclusive existence, and there is a bottle of alcohol on the table.

Berger: Obviously we’re not showing too much, but I think in the brief glimpse that we get, it’s someone that is living somewhat of a solitary existence, and like Isaac said, when we return we’ll find out the full story very quickly.

Is Nicky past the point of being able to acclimate himself into the Pearson family in the present day? Is he past the point of being saved?

Berger: That is a very good question. And knowing the type of family that the Pearsons are, you can guess that the Pearsons are probably going to want him to try and acclimate, and probably not be able to stay away once some of them learn about his existence. I think we’re going to be finding someone that has been living a very specific type of lifestyle, and there may be limitations there in terms of what he can do.

When might he meet some of the other Pearsons?

Aptaker: Kevin is pretty determined to get to the bottom of this story. He bought two tickets to Vietnam, so it’s all-consuming for him. I think it’s a matter of how long does it take to being told from a hotel clerk that your uncle is alive to actually tracking him down. I can promise that we’ll have some very satisfying answers in the immediate episodes that we come back with.

When did Milo first find out that Nicky was going to be alive, and what was his reaction?

Berger: We crafted our whole Vietnam arc [prior to] the beginning of the season and so as soon as we figure everything out, we let the actors in on it so they know the larger scope of what they’re playing. And I think he dug it. Milo loves the time period and he’s been having an amazing time working with Michael [Angarano, who plays Nicky].

Aptaker: He and Michael already knew each other and had worked on a project together, so they had a brother dynamic down so quickly. I went to their first day on set, which was that scene where Jack is working at the autobody shop and they are waiting to see the draft, and they felt like brothers instantly. They just had this dynamic that was so perfect.

What can you say about the Vietnamese woman? We obviously didn’t get the answers to who she is, but will we? How much emphasis should we put into who this woman is?

Aptaker: Honestly not a ton. For us, that was more a story of how, in life, you think you’re pursuing one thing, but it leads you to a much larger question that you didn’t even know you should be asking. In a little bit of a way, she was a MacGuffin [Ed note: essentially a red herring]. She was certainly important to Jack and they had that connection, but Kevin thought there was going to be this great, salacious love story with maybe an illegitimate child, and it turned out that ultimately this was more a story about brothers that he didn’t even realize.

Berger: But we will be learning a bit more about what happens with her in the past. Obviously, we still have so many questions about what happened actually during the rest of Jack and Nicky’s time together, and she obviously is involved [in their lives], so we will be getting a satisfying answer there in that time period.

Let’s move on to the question everyone has had since the season two finale: Who is “her” in the future? We finally see Beth in the future, so we know it’s not her. But when Beth says she’s going to visit Randall’s mother—thereby answering who “her” is—my first thought was that she was referring to his birth mother, and not Rebecca. Did you purposely want to make it unclear about which mother she was going to see?

Aptaker: You’re the second person that brought this up, especially because we thought, ‘Let’s just try to be really clear for once about who ‘her’ is!’ I guess we weren’t! That was not us trying to be clever. So [when Beth says she’s going to visit] Randall’s birth mother, she’s referring to Rebecca.

That makes sense, because otherwise why would older Randall call up older Toby (as he did in the season three premiere) to say “She wants you there, Toby,” if he was talking about his birth mother and not Rebecca.

Aptaker: That’s hilarious. Yes, we can answer the question that “her” is Rebecca, so that no longer has to be looming over people. And also, Beth is OK [in the future]. She has survived and is healthy and thriving in the future.

And as sad as it is knowing Rebecca is probably not doing well, at least we know that, for the most part, she has lived a long, healthy life. Is she in her eighties?

Berger: Yeah. Yes, that is true. There wasn’t some untimely death here, and this reveal is giving one piece of the larger picture, in terms of what happened with our family as we move through the rest of the series. It’s one little piece in terms of the larger plan that we’ve had in our minds since the beginning.

This must be hard for Tess, too, especially after seeing the touching scene she shared with Rebecca about her coming out.

Aptaker: Exactly. As young Tess was coming of age, Rebecca was clearly becoming such an important person in her life, and they developed a strong bond over the years and that would make it particularly painful for Tess to see Rebecca in whatever circumstance she may be in.

Speaking of the future, what kind of solace can you give to Beth and Randall and Katoby fans? Now we’ve seen both Randall and Toby not wearing wedding rings in the future, so either you guys have something against wedding rings or both men are not with their present-day spouses. This is very disturbing.

Aptaker, jokingly: In our future, jewelry is outlawed.

Berger: I think we can’t say too much on it. We have two incredibly strong, lovable couples that are going to be put through the pieces, and everyone is going to have to wait and see what becomes of them.

So should fans automatically not assume that Beth and Randall are divorced or separated?

Aptaker: I think you have to look at those scenes and make what assumptions and connections and guesses you want to make, because I would say we certainly haven’t shown them in any sort of affectionate, married way yet. We only know these very limited, very intentional moments that are [playing out] every so often, and it could certainly go either way.

Berger: I don’t think people should assume the best or worst. They’re just going to have to go on this journey with us a little longer.

There’s no way Beth and Randall split up over their argument involving his political future, right? They’re too strong of a couple for that.

Aptaker: I certainly don’t think they’re splitting up over that argument, but we’re over a decade into the future, so a lot can go right or wrong in the marriage in that much time.

this-is-us-season-three-2018-beth-randall.jpg

PHOTO: NBC/Ron Batzdorff

How has Beth changed in the future? What are we meant to take away from that quick glimpse of her as the boss of a dance company?

Aptaker: Exactly. I think it’s a little bit of a head-scratcher right now for us, but it’s something that we’re going to be getting into the second half of the season. We’re doing an all-Beth episode that we’ll be starting to shoot in a week or two that will really dive into her backstory and give us a lot of answers about who Beth was before she met Randall. Once we explore that backstory, the future flash[forward] will start to make a lot more sense.

In the future, Beth’s assistant hands her a Pin the Tail on the Donkey game. Remind viewers how that played into Rebecca’s past.

Berger: It’s something that we showed in our birthday episode in season one, so the game is part of the Pearson family history.

Finally, what can you say about where we pick up in January?

Aptaker: We actually just watched the first cut of the episode and it’s a really, really cool one. We are going to pick up on election night for Randall, which is about an eight-week jump in our show. But then we’re going to go back in time. It’s one of our specially-structured episodes where we start on election night, waiting for the results to come in, and then we jump back and tell the story of those eight weeks we missed and catch up to where everybody is on election night.

This Is Us will return January 15 at 9 P.M. ET on NBC.

The Big Bang Theory Season 12, Episode 9 Recap: Amy and Sheldon's Project Falls Apart

Ever since The Big Bang Theory introduced the concept of Super-Asymmetry at Sheldon and Amy’s wedding last May, I’ve been reluctant to embrace their enthusiasm. It had nothing to do with Sheldon and Amy working together as a team, but everything to do with feeling like I was back in high school chemistry struggling to understand the basics. It just wasn’t exciting.

The results on the show have been mixed as well; sometimes Super-Asymmetry has paved the way for important discussions; other times I’ve tuned out completely. But in tonight’s episode—titled “The Citation Negation”—I felt truly invested for the first time.

The episode opens with Sheldon and Amy recruiting Leonard to help them track down hundreds of citations before they publish their paper on SA. In an effort to keep their project secret, they ask Leonard to spend hours in a dark library doing the legwork. I’m not sure what Leonard gets out of this, but he already has Penny, so what more does the guy need in life?

Meanwhile, my favorite character, Anu, sadly isn’t in this episode, so the writers pair Raj with Leonard in the dungeon dimly-lit library. It’s as boring as that aforementioned chemistry class until Leonard and Raj discover something that doesn’t look quite right; apparently Sheldon and Amy may not have been the first to discover Super-Asymmetry.

Leonard and Raj bring their findings to Howard, who confirms that in 1978 a Russian scientist already disproved SA. As the findings read, “Super-Asymmetry is inherently flawed and does not bear the weight of further examination.” Yikes.

Leonard breaks the news to Sheldon and Amy, who are in complete and utter disbelief. Sheldon somehow manages to thank Leonard for relaying the news knowing that couldn’t have been easy for him. His maturity then turns to a childlike response as he destroys one of the boards on an easel. I can’t remember the last time I witnessed such profound anger from Sheldon. The moment aims to inject a bit of humor to the scene, but it’s too late; there’s nothing funny about it. Sheldon and Amy are devastated, and they have every right to be.

Sheldon retreats to the other room, rummaging through papers hoping to find something—anything—that could give insight into what just happened. Amy is equally depressed but wants to do what she can to help her husband. She even offers to sing him “Soft Kitty”—if that’s not love, I don’t know what is. Sheldon doesn’t understand how Amy can be so calm in the midst of professional turmoil, but she tells him she’s just trying to hold it together for his sake.

Sheldon tells Amy that her pretending to be OK actually makes him feel worse, which provides the opening Amy needs to come to terms with their disappointing reality. “Fine! I’m not OK!” she says, her voice quivering. “We came up with this idea at our wedding. We poured months of our lives into it. I thought we were changing the course of science, and now it’s all gone!”

Wow. Big Bang doesn’t usually go there, but that scene was nothing less than beautiful and heartbreaking at once.

The next day, a despondent-looking Sheldon and Amy don’t even go to work (who can blame them?). In fact, they don’t even know what day it is.

PHOTO: Sonja Flemming/CBS

“You had a setback,” Penny says before launching into the most ill-timed pep-talk. “This is the time you gotta dig in and try harder! It’s like halftime, and you’re down by 7!” Leonard tries to quell the mood with his own inspiring speech (“Individually you’re the smartest people I know! Together you can do anything!”), but it’s not well-received. “I appreciate what you’re trying to do,” Sheldon says, “but please stop. You can’t make this better.” Adds Amy, “I’m with Sheldon. We worked our butts off on this paper, and it was all for nothing. If you think some pep talk can help us, then you don’t understand.”

She’s right. Shamy needs time to grieve. This has been their baby for the better part of a year. Of course they’ll find their footing again, but they have to process their disappointment first. And no offense to Super-Asymmetry, but that’s the storyline I want to watch.

The Big Bang Theory Season 12, Episode 8 Recap: Raj and Anu Set a Wedding Date

When Big Bang Theory executive producer Steve Holland told me earlier this fall that Raj’s storyline with a new love interest was going to “play out over the course of the season,” I was skeptical. Actually, it was more than that: I was disappointed.

With Sheldon and Amy now wed, Penny and Leonard in their third year of marriage, and Bernadette and Howard managing two kids, I thought pairing up Raj for the final season felt a little like checking off a to-do list. Plus, if the writers wanted a happy ending for Raj, why does that have to mean an engagement or marriage? That’s not to say I don’t want Raj to find someone or be happy, but I love how relatable the relationships on Big Bang are. And in 2018, it’s extremely relatable for romance/love/engagement to take longer for some. So why rush it with Raj?

When I asked Holland if he was open to Raj not ending up with anyone by series end, Holland started by saying, “I try not to…” before adding that “no matter what ending we do, we’ll upset somebody somehow. We’re just trying to focus on an ending that feels right to us and hopefully people will like it.”

Well, surprisingly—shockingly—I’m on board with Raj and Anu. The introduction of Anu (played by Rati Gupta) has been an energy shot the show needed going into its final season. She’s real, smart, and interesting. She doesn’t have time for BS—from Raj or anyone else. She’s looking for a grown-up relationship, and she’s tired of waiting for 30-something boys to become 30-something men.

PHOTO: Michael Yarish

While I still wish Raj and Anu could have been introduced by their parents without the pressure of it leading to an arranged marriage, I am excited to see where this could go. And apparently it’s going to a Valentine’s Day 2019 wedding date, which was jarring to hear. (Really, you two? It has to be that soon?) Still, I’m finding myself bored whenever Anu and Raj aren’t the focus of an episode. (Case in point: last week’s.)

Tonight’s episode—titled “The Consummation Deviation”—started with Raj making sure his friends would be free on February 14 and willing to fly to India for the ceremony. It’ll be interesting to see if that date actually comes to fruition, but let’s not worry about that yet. As we saw in the latest episode, there are other momentous occasions to get to first.

Starting with the moment when Anu matter-of-factly tells Raj they should have sex. He almost runs off the road, but that may be because he’s more worried about being naked following a salt-heavy dinner than actually doing it with Anu for the first time. Anu clears things up and says she doesn’t mean right now, but it’s important to her that they know they’re compatible before getting married. Uh, maybe make sure you’re compatible before you tell all your friends about a wedding date? But that’s just me.

Anu says she’ll get a room at her hotel this weekend—remember, she’s a concierge—but Raj privately goes into panic mode. Later at Leonard’s apartment, he confesses to the guys (minus Sheldon) that he’s pretty anxious because this is the woman he’s going to marry. What if he’s no good? “Do we sign up for a lifetime of mediocre sex?” he asks. It’s obviously not the first time Raj has had sex, but the stakes are high.

the-big-bang-theory-season-12-episode-8-raj-leonard-howard.jpg

PHOTO: Sonja Flemming/CBS

The guys are not much help, so Raj joins Bernadette and Penny for wine time to mull it over. “She’s probably nervous, too,” Penny says. Raj doesn’t believe her, but that’s not the point. He’s worried he’s not as skilled as he’s made himself out to be in past sexual encounters. Plus, Anu is Indian as well, so she’s going to know there’s no position called the “screeching lotus.” (Oh, Raj.)

The weekend apparently comes very fast because in the next scene, Raj is in the hotel room and having a freakout with Penny over the phone. Penny tells Raj that her first time with Leonard wasn’t that great, which is a hilarious nod to Leonard’s earlier comments that their first time was so good he plays it over and over in his head. If that was supposed to make Raj feel better, it doesn’t.

Anu walks in—and in a tip of the hat to the Raj of years past, he suddenly can’t talk in the presence of a woman. Anu is understandably confused as Raj runs to the bathroom, shuts the door, and pops open a bottle of champagne.

When Raj later emerges—tipsy, of course—Anu wants to know what is going on. When Raj fails to tell her what the issue is, she says she’s going to leave. He begs her not to, but she demands the truth. “Oh, the truth is so not good for me,” he pleads before finally admitting that he used to be so insecure around women that he couldn’t talk. He assures Anu that he’s not that same person, but “I guess I wanted so much for tonight to go well that I stressed myself out.” What’s ironic is that Raj and Anu entered into this arranged relationship hoping to avoid the pitfalls of typical relationships, but also realizing they’re not fail-proof either.

the-big-bang-theory-raj-anu-season-12-episode-8.jpg

PHOTO: Sonja Flemming/CBS

Anu asks Raj why he didn’t tell her this before, but he admits he was embarrassed. Instead of saying “why?” or “that’s ridiculous,” she says, “I get it,” which both validates his feelings and creates another level of trust between them. “If it makes you feel better, I’ve got things I’m embarrassed about, too.” While I was hoping for a profound reveal from Anu, it turns out her “embarrassment” is simply that she doesn’t like music. “What kind of music?” Raj asks. “Just all of it,” she says.

The comic relief comes when Raj wants to know if Beyoncé is the exception—specifically “Single Ladies”—but Anu tells him that even she doesn’t make the cut. “My point is, we both have our little eccentricities,” she says. “Little eccentricities?” Raj wonders. “One is a deep-seeded psychological disturbance and the other can be solved by half a glass of chardonnay.” They laugh and immediately start making out. Have I mentioned I love these two?

The next morning, Raj is still wearing his same clothes, and it’s obvious all they did was stay up all night and talk. “Last night was wonderful,” Anu tells Raj. He’s a bit confused since the night didn’t go as planned, but she assures him that getting to know each other on a deeper level was great. Also, she assumes that the fact that he could talk to her all night—while in bed—is a good sign for their marriage. “Yeah, and my liver,” Raj jokes.

Raj then says maybe they should wait to have sex another time, but Anu has another plan. “Or, I take a shower and you decide how you want to play this,” she says. It takes a confused Raj a minute to realize exactly what Anu is implying until she pops her head out of the bathroom and instructs him to “take a shower with me, Raj!” He quickly jumps out of bed and joins Anu in the shower.

the-big-bang-theory-anu-raj-bed-season-12-episode-8.jpg

PHOTO: Sonja Flemming/CBS

By all accounts, perhaps Anu is too mature for Raj. Or perhaps Raj needs someone who appreciates Beyoncé in all her glory. But whatever the case, this feels real. And I’m here for it.

*Riverdale* Season 3 Episode 4 Recap: All the *Breakfast Club* References

This week’s episode of Riverdale went back in time and saw our favorite teens playing their parents. KJ Apa played young Fred Andrews, Lili Reinhart played young Alice Cooper, Camila Mendes played young Hermione Lodge, and so on and so forth. It was a fun episode—and as trippy as you’d expect. Apa even dyed his hair black for the occasion!

But the episode didn’t really move season three’s plot along. Instead, we learned how the Riverdale parents first came into contact with Gryphons & Gargoyles, the creepy game that’s slowly taking over the town and killing some of the students at Riverdale High. It turns out the parents were just as invested in G&G as their kids—and they may have even played a hand in one of the game’s first murders.

That’s certainly intriguing, but the best part of the episode has nothing to do with Gryphons & Gargoyles: It’s all the Breakfast Club references made throughout. Everything from the costumes to the dialogue and even some of the plot points feels like it came straight out of the John Hughes classic. Watching this episode must’ve been wild for Molly Ringwald, Luke Perry, Skeet Ulrich, and all the other Riverdale parents who were once huge teen stars. This flashback chapter was their lives at one point—literally, for Molly Ringwald.

Below, here are all the major references to The Breakfast Club tonight’s Riverdale episode made:

1. The title. It’s called “The Midnight Club.” Subtle.

2. Alice’s leather jacket and plaid shirt wrapped around her waist. It’s very reminiscent of Judd Nelson’s look in The Breakfast Club.

PHOTO: The CW

3. Their nicknames. The Bad Girl (Alice), the Rebelling Catholic (Hermione), the Teacher’s Pet (Penelope), the Artist-Athlete (Fred), the Political Animal (Sierra), and the Ladies’ Man (F.P.)

4. The rude principal administering the detention. What’s his damage? He won’t even let these kids go to the bathroom!

5. The story kicks off in Saturday detention. All the kids have landed themselves there for various reasons. Sound familiar?

PHOTO: The CW

6. “Secrets and Sins.” It’s a game the kids play during detention where they confess their deepest, darkest secrets. They do this while sitting cross-legged on the floor—just like the scene in The Breakfast Club.

7. F.P.’s letterman jacket. Is that Emilio Estevez I see?

PHOTO: The CW

8. The contentious, abusive relationship between F.P. and his father. It mirrors the abuse John Bender (Judd Nelson) details at the hand of his dad in TBC.

9. The eighties-tinged music. It’s the perfect soundtrack. Listen closely for the “Take on Me” instrumental.

10. The lunch unpacking scene. At their second detention, the kids unpack their food for lunch time. Penelope has a prim-and-proper canteen. F.P.’s just eating a sandwich. Molly Ringwald easily could be in this scene eating sushi.

PHOTO: The CW

11. The secret romances. Well, quasi-romances. F.P. and Hermione share a sweet moment while playing G&G at school, and so do Alice and Fred. It’s exactly like when John and Claire (Ringwald) kiss in The Breakfast Club.

The Big Bang Theory Season 12, Episode 7 Recap: Bernadette Hides From Her Kids

At the start of this season of The Big Bang Theory, executive producer Steve Holland told Glamour.com that the writers were working on an episode about the challenges of parenthood. And in tonight’s episode—”The Grant Allocation Derivation”—we saw just how far some (hi, Bernadette!) are willing to go to escape the chaos.

The bulk of the story was devoted to Leonard having to choose which colleague to distribute extra grant money to for their work project. The assignment—by President Siebert, who shockingly still has a job—put Leonard in a hard place, as friends and colleagues made his life miserable demanding they receive the grant money. Personally, I kind of checked out for most of this one. Bring back Inspector Gadget Leonard and then we’ll talk.

That’s because the real highlight of the episode was Bernadette using Halley and Michael’s playhouse as a hideaway from her kids. Sure, the plot seemed a little redundant (example A), but it also rang true. Most parents, babysitters, even grandparents have wanted to escape the rigors of childcare at one point. It’s exhausting.

Some parents look at their office job as somewhat of a breather, but that’s hardly the equivalent of “me” time. The work/home life cycle never ends, so it’s understandable if you suddenly find yourself eating a Twinkie and drinking boxed wine in a four-sided plastic playhouse. When Bernadette returns home from an overwhelming day at the office and hears Howard freaking out with the kids, she takes action. The solution is simple: call her husband from the playhouse and tell him she’s stuck at work. “He deserves better,” she tells herself after hanging up the phone and putting her feet up.

The next day at work, though, Bernadette tells Penny she’s worried she’s an awful person for lying to Howard. “It’s just work has been crazy and sometimes I don’t want babies pulling my hair and pinching my baby fat,” she says. “I love my kids, but that hour to myself just makes me feel human again.” How can you argue with that?

Penny doesn’t, because the next day she’s so stressed out by Leonard (who’s stressed out by his grants responsibilities) that she joins Bernadette for wine time in the playhouse. Then, in a scene we’ve seen over and over again—but who cares, because Mayim Bialik is genius—Amy suspects Penny and Bernadette are hanging out without her and nabs an invitation.

PHOTO: Michael Yarish/Warner Bros. Entertainment

At the end of the episode, Howard puts the kids to bed and joins Raj in the outdoor hot tub; Raj hears a noise and is alarmed someone’s in the playhouse. Of course, Howard knows it’s Bernadette but doesn’t have the heart to burst her bubble. “She’s been hiding out in there all week,” he tells Raj. “She’s overwhelmed at work, and frankly me and the kids are a lot. She needs downtime.”

He tells Raj that he purposely pretends he’s none the wiser because that’s how marriage works. In fact, Howard lied about getting life insurance three years ago, so now he think they’re even. Seems to me that lying about life insurance is a much bigger deal than playing hooky in a toddler’s playhouse, but then again, kids haven’t made me crazy…yet.

*This Is Us* Season 3 Episode 6 Recap: What's in Store for Pregnant Kate?

The newest episode of This Is Us didn’t end with any cliffhangers, but after last week’s episode we’re not sure we could’ve handled any more. From learning that Jack received his signature necklace from a woman in Vietnam to Beth losing her job and Kate’s pregnancy rollercoaster, we needed a bit of a break.

But that doesn’t mean there’s any less to worry about for the Pearson clan. Kevin and Zoe are off to Vietnam to uncover answers the entire family may not be ready for, an emotionally-exhausted Beth is about to embark on a new political venture with Randall, and Kate is grappling with the excitement and concern of her maybe-baby and Toby.

With a third of the season already behind us, executive producer and co-showrunner Isaac Aptaker called us after a nine-day shoot in Vietnam and gave the scoop on what happening next. Get ready.

Glamour: Let’s talk about the necklace that Jack gave Kevin as a teenager. Kevin knows that it was given to Jack by this woman in Vietnam, but that’s if the necklace even belonged to the woman in the first place, right?

Isaac Aptaker: Totally. Yeah, he’s making a little bit of a leap there.

Glamour: One of my theories is that Nicky was actually involved with this woman, and Nicky gave the necklace to her, but when Nicky dies, she gives it to Jack.

IA: Hmmm, very interesting. Yeah, I mean, anything is possible. So far all we know is what Kevin knows, which is that this necklace was very important to his father, and eventually bequeathed to him is on this woman’s neck, and it’s very mysterious and opens up quite a lot of questions. So Kevin is determined more than ever to get some answers.

PHOTO: NBC/Ron Batzdorff

Glamour: When are we going to see this woman next?

IA: We’re sort of…at the end of the episode, as you see, we’re sort of fully launched into this story, so we’re going to pick right back up with Zoe and Kevin going to Vietnam in our next episode.

Glamour: Back in March, I floated the idea by you and Dan Fogelman that there could be a half Pearson sibling somewhere in Vietnam…

IA: Yeah, and I’m reading a bunch of that now out there. [Laughs] The Big Three-Point-Five, some website coined it. I thought that was cute. So yeah, that’s certainly going to be on Kevin’s mind, too, as he’s like, ‘Whoa, was my dad romantically involved with this necklace woman, and do I potentially have a half-Vietnamese Pearson [sibling] somewhere out there?’

Glamour: And see, back in March, Justin [Hartley] made me think I was crazy for raising the possibility of another sibling, and now it’s a possibility!

IA: [Laughs] It’s totally possible!

Glamour: You just returned from filming episodes in Vietnam. When will those episodes air?

IA: Man, they are so cool. Our first one is going to be the next one, episode seven, so we’re rushing to get those scenes done. We work weekends around here to get things done! [Laughs] That’s the first chapter of Zoe and Kevin in Vietnam, which we shot all around location in Vietnam. We shot scenes from a few episodes there, so [that] takes us up through the middle point of our season.

this-is-us-vietnam-milo-ventimigilia-season-3.jpg

PHOTO: NBC/Ron Batzdorff

Glamour: At what point will Rebecca find out about all of this, and how will Kevin digging into Jack’s past affect her?

IA: She’s totally in the loop and he’s not secretly going to Vietnam. Everybody knows. I don’t think he’s like, ‘Hey mom, I think dad may have had a girlfriend over there,’ but she knows he’s off to get some answers. And certainly I think just like our Big Three, she has a lot of unanswered questions about her husband, but she’s also in a lot of ways I think come to peace with that. And having Kevin dig [into Jack’s past] and take these skeletons out of the closet is going to cause some upset as they have to re-examine the father and husband they thought they knew.

Glamour: Let’s move on to Kate and Toby’s baby, or maybe-baby as they call it. Tell me what was behind the decision to have this pregnancy take, considering the doctor cautioned her that she only had a 10% chance of IVF working.

IA: Yes, and so far [the pregnancy] works., but it’s still a long road ahead. We felt like we only have so many characters on our show and we’re trying to show a wide variety of experiences. We felt like even though it wasn’t IVF last year with Kate and Toby, we told the story of the heartbreak of losing a pregnancy, and the [10%] thing felt like it was enough of a chance that it wasn’t so crazy that we’d love to show when IVF does work and a pregnancy hopefully does make it.

Glamour: How many weeks along is Kate?

IA: Our writers assistant diligently keeps track of how many weeks along she is. I can’t tell you off the top of my head, but we have a chart in our timeline in our writers room to keep track of all of this. But it’s a fraught road: It’s a medically-complicated pregnancy because of a variety of factors, and it’s a high-risk pregnancy. She’s not at all out of the woods, and it’s wonderful the IVF did work and she’s pregnant, but there is a long, long road ahead and it is going to be a complicated one for Kate and Toby.

Glamour: Speaking of Toby, you really took your time in tonight’s episode to showcase what it’s like to battle depression…

IA: Depression is so common, and we’ve all either struggled with it or know someone in our lives who has, so it was so important to us to be honest and get this right, and it’s not a story where in one episode someone is depressed and in another episode they pop a pill and everything’s back to normal. It’s a process, and we wanted to depict that process. It’s a real challenge for Toby to get on the right dose and get back on his antidepressants and just sort of get back to the status quo of that guy that we know and love. And for Kate, this episode is so much about her struggle of how she can be the best partner to Toby as he goes through this. Does he need someone to push him? Does he need someone to say take all the time you need? This is all unchartered territory for Kate, too, and she’s trying to figure out the best way to support her husband.

Glamour: Let’s turn to Beth. Is stress purely the cause of what she’s going through right now having lost her job, or is there something else health-wise going on? That’s not to say stress can’t cause health issues, because it definitely can, but obviously fans are still worried Beth is the woman in question that Randall and Tess are going to see in the future.

IA: We never intended for this to feel like a story about Beth’s health and Beth being in jeopardy. [Instead] it’s what happens when this alpha professional shark of a woman, who’s worked at one company and really grown it for her entire career, has the rug ripped out from under her and is all of the sudden unemployed and what that does to your whole sense of self when so much of it is wrapped up in your professional identity. So we see this ripple effect that’s going through her whole personality and she snaps at her kids, which is so, so uncharacteristic of Beth.

Glamour: I’m worried about Beth and Randall’s income, since Randall obviously isn’t making money campaigning for public office, Beth lost her job, and now they have another kid in the house to take care of.

IA: [Laughs] Totally. It’s a fair question. Randall did very, very well at his previous job, and he’s only been out of that for a little over a year, so I think he built up quite a nest egg for them. Beth’s only been unemployed for a matter of weeks, and when you’re let go like that, you do get a severance, and then they also have William’s building, so they are also getting rental income from that property. You don’t have to worry about them yet, but it is something we’ve talked about as Randall embarks on this campaign. What is the financial strain that he’s putting on the family when no one has a 9 to 5 at the moment?

Glamour: Finally, let’s talk about Jack and Rebecca. Dan Fogelman originally teased this super romantic, Ghost-like scene this season that ended up being Jack doing the dishes and Rebecca helping him, but I thought tonight’s scene with the boxing gloves was way more romantic! Are we going to see more of that this season, especially in their courting period?

IA: Oh, totally! That’s our favorite stuff. The show can get so sad because we do take on so much, but we always want to find those moments of levity. And I agree—that one really snuck up on us. In the writing it just felt like a cute little scene, and then in editing when you see Mandy and Milo give it their all, you’re like, ‘Wow, this is really romantic!’ They are so good at playing that and we love giving them that type of stuff. Especially, like you said, when they’re in their twenties and falling in love. We’re diving back into that time period actually in a big way in the next new episode. They have a very romantic one coming up!

Glamour: Yes, milk that sexiness for all its worth! [Laughs] And finally, as we approach the halfway point in this season, what can you say about what’s to come?

IA: The next episode [airing on November 13] is one of my favorite episodes we’ve ever done, and I haven’t even seen the final cut yet cause we’re still editing in the Vietnam pieces. But it’s a really special episode. We’re going to dive back into Jack and Rebecca sort of right where we left them, which is deciding to go to Los Angeles, so it’s a road trip episode where Jack and Rebecca are heading to LA. We are picking up on Jack in Vietnam [also] on a road trip of sorts, and then Kevin and Zoe are not on a road trip, but they are on a much bigger trip as they begin their adventure and arrive in Ho Chi Minh City. So there’s a ton of scope to it. We’re in L.A., and we’re in Vietnam in two different time periods, and you don’t see that a lot in one hour of television.
