Netflix's New Thriller Dangerous Lies Looks Like a Lifetime Movie Meets Riverdale

The trailer for Camila Mendes’s new Netflix movie, Dangerous Lies, just dropped, and I have a lot of thoughts.

Remember when Brenda Song starred in the Netflix thriller that gave off serious Lifetime movie vibes? You know, Secret Obsession, where she loses her memory in an accident and Mike Vogel pretends to be her husband, carting her off to a creepy house in the middle of nowhere with no cell reception and a lot of photoshopped couple pics? I think someone at Netflix went into their next pitch meeting and said, “That, but make it actually mysterious!”

ERIC MILNER/NETFLIX

“After losing her waitressing job, Katie Franklin (Mendes) takes a job as a caretaker to a wealthy elderly man in his sprawling, empty Chicago estate,” the Netflix description of Dangerous Lies reads on its press website. “The two grow close, but when he unexpectedly passes away and names Katie as his sole heir, she and her husband, Adam (Jessie T. Usher), are pulled into a complex web of lies, deception, and murder. If she’s going to survive, Katie will have to question everyone’s motives—even the people she loves.”

“Even the people she loves” means her husband, guys. Seriously, based on the trailer, Adam seems to really enjoy all that new money a bit too much, and you know how much Lifetime loves a sketchy husband. Apparently, Netflix does, too! Still, the whole thing also reads like a grown-up, movie-length episode of Riverdale with its New England landscape, noir lighting, that diner, and all the hot people (including Cam Gigandet and Jamie Chung).

Take a look at the trailer for yourself, below:

Of course, I’d be remiss not to mention the Knives Out parallels, considering the hilarious whodunit that graced us with Chris Evans in that cozy sweater also centers around a caretaker who’s left with a fortune after her employer dies of questionable causes. (Quick question, can someone get Jessie T. Usher in the sweater, STAT?)

Dangerous Lies hits Netflix on April 30. With all these references in mind, how could you not give it a watch?

Netflix's New Show Outer Banks Looks Like the Perfect Blend of The O.C. and Riverdale

These days, you probably have a lot of time to stream Netflix. But there’s only so many old episodes of Gossip Girl you can watch, right? Well, if you’re in the mood for another soapy drama stacked with hot people and preposterous stakes, then I have some very good news: Netflix is dropping its new series, Outer Banks, in two weeks, and it looks the perfect blend of The O.C. and Riverdale (with, yes, a little Gossip Girl thrown in).

The show takes place on North Carolina’s idyllic Outer Banks: sunny and beachy but with, apparently, a major class divide. You’re either super rich or working two jobs in this town, per narrator John Booker Rutledge (Chase Stokes). The central characters in this story are in the latter category, which is why when they find out John’s missing father somehow acquired $400 million in gold, all hell breaks loose. What transpires is an all-out treasure hunt, mixed with saucy romance and clash collisions between the Outer Banks’s wealthy and working class.

Watch the trailer for yourself, below. You’ll pick up on the Riverdale (crime, hot people) and O.C. (beach, hot people) vibes instantly.

Netflix’s official description for the series reads, “Outer Banks is a coming-of-age story that follows a tight-knit group of local teens (a.k.a. the Pogues) in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. When a hurricane kills the power for the summer season, it sets off a chain of illicit events that force the friends to make life-altering decisions. The search for their ringleader’s missing father, forbidden romances, a high-stakes treasure hunt, and the escalating conflict between the Pogues and their rivals turn their summer into one filled with mystery and adventure they’ll never forget.”

Sold? Me too. All 10 episodes of Outer Banks hit Netflix on Wednesday, April 15.

Riverdale Season 4, Episode 1 Recap: Shannen Doherty Tributes Luke Perry in Cameo Role

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Many eyes were on Riverdale‘s season four premiere Wednesday night, as both fans and critics waited to see how it would pay tribute to Luke Perry, who passed away in March after suffering a stroke. Perry, perhaps best known for portraying Dylan McKay on Beverly Hills, 90210, co-starred on Riverdale as Archie Andrews’s father, Fred. He was a beloved character—a moral compass, of sorts, in what’s otherwise an incredibly dark and dramatic world. Tonight’s episode, appropriately titled “In Memoriam,” honored that.

Early in the episode we learn the cause of Fred’s death: He was driving a few towns over and stopped to help a woman whose car tires blew out. While attempting to fix her car, he was struck by an ongoing vehicle and sustained fatal injuries. The person driving the car didn’t stop after hitting Fred. At first, we think the culprit is a grown man named George Augustine, who Archie goes to confront in a fit of rage. But there’s a twist: George is actually covering for his young son, who secretly took the family’s car out and struck Fred by accident.

Archie is overcome with even more emotion when he finds out how his father died. Essentially, Fred passed away as he lived on Riverdale: helping people. What’s more: George covered up for his son exactly how Fred would’ve for Archie had he done something similar. There’s a resonance to how the show-runners wrote Fred’s death that deserves to be applauded.

Also commendable (and powerful) was including Shannen Doherty, Perry’s 90210 co-star, in the episode. She plays a small but pivotal role as the woman who Fred pulled over to help. Doherty appears midway through the episode, dropping flowers off on the side of the road where Fred was hit. “He saved my life,” she tells Archie. “If he hadn’t done what he did, there’s no way I’d be here right now. I know that.”

Many Beverly Hills, 90210 fans were moved by Doherty’s cameo. Here are just a few Twitter reactions:

The episode, overall, was a respectful, heartfelt, and warm homage to a Hollywood icon. It makes sense that Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa waited until now to address Luke Perry’s death on the show. Doing it in the spring, so soon after Perry passed, would’ve felt like a rush job—like the show was trying to fit something in at the last minute. But Perry was too important of a figure, both on Riverdale and beyond, to get a quick tribute.

The CW's Nancy Drew Review: It's an Even Sexier, Scarier Version of Riverdale

As for the Riverdale comparisons, McMann gets it. Both shows are melodramas that center on beautiful teens in frightening situations—but she makes it clear there are a few significant differences between the two.

“There are very natural similarities you can draw,” she says. “It’s a group of friends going around, solving mysteries, getting themselves wrapped up in some dark and scary things. But there’s a little bit more grittiness [in Riverdale]. I think our show is a little more subtle. Part of the whole Riverdale thing is that they’re playing comic book characters, and it’s a comic book world.”

McMann makes a good point here. Because Riverdale is based on Archie Comics, the storylines and characters can be a bit more outlandish. Archie, Veronica, and the gang are all painted colorfully with broad strokes, while the characters in Nancy Drew are more difficult to define. Take Nancy’s coworker Bess (Madison Jaizani)—she seems like a Cheryl Blossom archetype at first, but she softens as the pilot unfolds. And George Fayne (Leah Lewis), Nancy’s boss, appears type-A and straight-laced but is actually hiding a monumental secret. (I won’t tell you what.) In that respect, the show is a bit more grounded in reality than Riverdale.

But it’s not realistic in other ways—namely, the ghosts. Yes, there are spirits in this Nancy Drew reboot. One, in particular, is Nancy’s primary suspect in the show’s central murder mystery. I’m not kidding: She thinks a ghost killed a living, breathing human being. In this world it’s totally plausible.

“There’s a huge slant to the supernatural,” McMann says. “This is a ‘Ghosts are real. Very, very real’ story. There’s this darker side of the reality of all these supernatural beings and how actually terrifying they are. Though there have definitely been nods to the supernatural throughout the Nancy Drew book series and the original canon, it was definitely surprising to me when I first read the script. It still is as we get more and more scripts. I’m like, ‘Oh, we’re really going there.'”

McMann thinks the show’s horror elements make it more compelling. “It’s like this weird combination of Scooby Doo and Twin Peaks,” she says. (Riverdale, if you remember, also garnered Twin Peaks comparisons when it first debuted.) “It’s so mysterious and scary, but then the characters kind of make light of it. There are moments where it’s very intense, but then afterwards it’s like, ‘Hey, guys! Wow, wasn’t that wild?'”

One thing McMann hopes viewers don’t find wild is Nancy’s inherently feminist characterization. In this version she’s viewed as a reliable crime scene investigator—the fact that she’s an 18-year-old doesn’t factor at all. “Nancy’s always been a little bit of a rebel, paving her own way and defying female expectations,” she says. “Nancy is who she is, and nobody’s questioning what she’s doing. There’s no, ‘Wow, she can do that and she’s a girl!’ Of course she can. Nobody questions it because that’s who she is, and that’s the world that we’re living in.”

Riverdale Season 4: Everything We Know So Far

Jughead’s whereabouts are still a mystery.

Remember, Jughead was nowhere to be found in that flash-forward scene showing Archie, Veronica, and Betty covered in blood. In an interview with Decider, Aguirre-Sacasa leaned into the mystery of his whereabouts. “We have a couple of options,” he said. “We certainly have started talking about the events leading up to that… which is going to happen halfway through the season.”

There will be a few new regulars.

Wyatt Nash, who plays Betty’s actual long-lost brother, is definitely going to be a recurring character in a few episodes. The actor posted an Instagram photo on set several weeks ago, and the caption reads, “Guess who is coming to Riverdale? Thanks so much for the warm reception!”

Some crossover action might be on the horizon.

Aguirre-Sacasa is also behind The CW’s new show Katy Keene, starring Lucy Hale. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, he hinted that there could be some overlap between the two shows: “There’s probably going to be a crossover. Fingers crossed!”

We’ll update this post with more information as it comes in.

Every *Riverdale* Fan Needs These Betty and Veronica Sneakers

Since the first episode of Riverdale, our fave fictional characters have given us plenty of IRL style ideas. As we continue to try our best to emulate Cheryl Blossom’s iconic red lipstick, copying at least one aspect of the cast’s wardrobe has gotten a tad easier.

Keds teamed up with Archie Comics to create a line of Betty and Veronica sneakers. Although the offerings feature the comic version of our favorite best friend duo, the retro-inspired stylings found on the sneakers would make them an equally stylish option for the CW’s modern-day Riverdale. For the collection, Keds debuted six different shoes, with prices ranging from $59.95 to $74.95.

Along with a pair of white slip-on Keds that feature embodied Betty and Veronica profiles, the launch includes a pair of pink lace-ups adorned in animated Betty and Veronica faces, rosy pink shoes with dainty cartoons including a sundae, and a denim blue version of the animated style.

There’s also a pair of white slip-on Keds covered in comic strips and a lace-up white shoe with colored animation.

This isn’t the first time that members of the Riverdale cast have inspired wearable items. Hot Topic previously launched a line of merchandise from the show and Torrid debuted a size-inclusive line of clothing that included Riverdale cardigans and a bodycon dress.

Ahead, take a look at the collection.
