The Suits Series Finale Made Several Meghan Markle References

I like to imagine that somewhere in Cape Town, South Africa last night, Meghan Markle put baby Archie to bed, curled up with a glass of wine, and watched the Suits series finale.

Even though she’s said that she hasn’t kept up with her former show after leaving in 2017, this was the final episode. And if she did watch, Markle would have discovered that the Suits crew found some clever ways to involve her and her character, Rachel Zane. Granted, some fans were hoping for an actual cameo, but creator Aaron Korsh told Deadline that he didn’t even ask the Duchess of Sussex. “I thought about asking, and I thought about even using audio footage that we have to come up with something, and in the end I didn’t ask, and I just thought, ‘I’m going to respect her new life and not put her in the position of having to ask.’ We decided not to put her in that position so I never asked,” he said.

So how did they end up making Markle part of the finale? First, during a scene with her TV dad, Robert Zane (Wendell Pierce), a photo of the two of them was easily visible on his desk.

Later, Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) says to Louis Litt (Rick Hoffman), “You’re not the prince of England,” which is perhaps a subtle nod to the actual prince of England that Markle married.

Then, in the final moments of the show, Harvey gets reflective as he and now-wife Donna plan to leave New York to work with Mike and Rachel in Seattle. We then see a montage, in which Markle’s character appears.

All the Hidden References on Taylor Swift's New Magazine Cover

Taylor Swift appears on the latest cover of Entertainment Weekly, and a lot of the accompanying interview revolves around her habit of dropping hidden clues and messages for fans about her new music. Given the topic, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the singer used her appearance on the cover to give even more hints about TS7.

The main source of speculation is Swift’s jacket on the cover, which is covered with tons of different buttons and pins. The text on the magazine reads, “Each of Taylor’s buttons is an Easter egg! Go to page 26 to decode them.” Naturally, Swifties are taking a serious magnifying glass to each button and offering their theories about what they mean.

Here’s what they’ve come up with so far:

1. Selena Gomez.

Some fans think this could mean an upcoming collaboration.

2. Her pet cats.

Swift has three cats, and they all seem to be pictured on the jacket.

3. The Dixie Chicks.

Another potential collab? Or a tour guest?

4. Game of Thrones characters.

Yep, those are the Stark sisters. Another pin is dedicated to Danerys Targaryn. Maybe she just really loves the show, or maybe the characters represent something deeper.

5. Drake.

Some people think this might be a collaboration, or a signal that Swift could release a double album like the Toronto rapper.

6. Grey’s Anatomy favorites.

Meredith Grey and Cristina Yang are in there, along with a heart that says “My Person.” That’s led some Twitter users to think there might be a song on TS7 named after the famous Grey’s Anatomy line. Also, keep in mind one of Swift’s cats is named after Meredith Grey.

7. The cast of Friends.

Swift loves the show.

8. Faith Hill.

In addition to the Dixie Chicks, there’s a Faith Hill nod. Maybe she’s planning a major country collab or drawing inspiration from the Mississippi singer.

9. Troye Sivan.

Fans are crossing their fingers that this means Sivan could be joining Swift on tour.

10. “Track 5.”

Swifties have a running joke that “Track 5” on her albums is always the most personal. This might be a clue she’s planning something special for the new album’s fifth song.

11. Law & Order.

A button that reads “Dun Dun” might be a direct reference to the popular Law & Order intro noise.

12. Mister Rogers.

One Twitter user thinks this might actually be a clever callback to Swift’s birthplace in Pennsylvania.

13. “I Tried” on a tombstone.

Swift said the album gets emotional. Some fans believe a tombstone with a flower that says “I tried” represents the record’s more intense moments.

14. Cats The Musical.

Swift is appearing in the film adaption of this popular show, due out this holiday season.

15. “Calm.”

Swift yells, “Je suis calme!” during her video for “ME!”

16. “Awesome.”

This word plays an important role on Swift’s song “ME!”

17. A rainbow heart.

Rainbows are a major part of Swift’s new aesthetic.

18. Seven pastel hearts.

Obviously, this symbolizes her seven albums.

All the Meghan Markle References in 'A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding'

Rose McIver, who plays Amber Moore in Netflix’s A Christmas Prince, told Glamour this week that Meghan Markle was “certainly” an inspiration in the franchise’s sequel, aptly titled A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding. Watch five minutes of the new movie—which hits Netflix today—and that’s abundantly clear.

It centers on Amber’s acclamation into the Aldovian royal family, where she finds herself challenging the traditions and protocols Prince Richard (Ben Lamb) and his relatives have followed for years. Meghan Markle reportedly has a history of doing the same when it comes to the British royal family—so, in that respect, she and Amber are very similar. In fact, Markle’s “royal rule-breaker” narrative is all over this movie—as well as some softer references to her wedding, relationship, and life with Prince Harry.

Below, check out all the maybe-probably-definitely references to the Duchess of Sussex in A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding. PS: Very light spoilers ahead.

1. Amber has a personal blog; Meghan ran a lifestyle website called “The Tig.”

2. The couple goes back and forth between Aldovia and New York, much like Meghan and Harry shuttled between Toronto and London during their dating phase.

3. There’s a “waving to the commoners from a car” scene! Look familiar?

4. Amber is tabloid fodder. News outlets may have covered Meghan and Harry once or twice.

5. Someone tells Amber that royal “protocol” must be observed now that she’s about to marry Prince Richard. That’s a word Meghan knows all too well.

6. Amber’s father doesn’t act fancy-pants when he meets the royals for the first time. Seems to be some Thomas Markle symbolism, in my opinion.

7. Mrs. Averill is now the head of royal press and protocol, and she’s telling Amber to watch the image she’s projecting with all her TV show appearances and blog posts. So, in other words, quit Suits.

8. Protocols, protocols, and more protocols.

9. Amber is clearly finding these intense traditions and procedures difficult to understand. Meghan reportedly has similar feelings in regards to the British royal family.

10. Amber’s hat. Remember this 2016 “Meghan incognito “ look?

PHOTO: Netflix

11. Everyone seems quite turned off by Amber wanting to work and speak on more serious Aldovian issues — much like Meghan raised eyebrows (and made headlines) for voicing her political opinions.

12. Yup, they make Amber censor her blog. Remember when Meghan shut down The Tig?

13. Take a shot every time they say “protocol” in this movie. Then take a shot for every article about Meghan Markle that has that word.

14. Annnd there’s a royal carriage ride!

*Riverdale* Season 3 Episode 4 Recap: All the *Breakfast Club* References

This week’s episode of Riverdale went back in time and saw our favorite teens playing their parents. KJ Apa played young Fred Andrews, Lili Reinhart played young Alice Cooper, Camila Mendes played young Hermione Lodge, and so on and so forth. It was a fun episode—and as trippy as you’d expect. Apa even dyed his hair black for the occasion!

But the episode didn’t really move season three’s plot along. Instead, we learned how the Riverdale parents first came into contact with Gryphons & Gargoyles, the creepy game that’s slowly taking over the town and killing some of the students at Riverdale High. It turns out the parents were just as invested in G&G as their kids—and they may have even played a hand in one of the game’s first murders.

That’s certainly intriguing, but the best part of the episode has nothing to do with Gryphons & Gargoyles: It’s all the Breakfast Club references made throughout. Everything from the costumes to the dialogue and even some of the plot points feels like it came straight out of the John Hughes classic. Watching this episode must’ve been wild for Molly Ringwald, Luke Perry, Skeet Ulrich, and all the other Riverdale parents who were once huge teen stars. This flashback chapter was their lives at one point—literally, for Molly Ringwald.

Below, here are all the major references to The Breakfast Club tonight’s Riverdale episode made:

1. The title. It’s called “The Midnight Club.” Subtle.

2. Alice’s leather jacket and plaid shirt wrapped around her waist. It’s very reminiscent of Judd Nelson’s look in The Breakfast Club.

PHOTO: The CW

3. Their nicknames. The Bad Girl (Alice), the Rebelling Catholic (Hermione), the Teacher’s Pet (Penelope), the Artist-Athlete (Fred), the Political Animal (Sierra), and the Ladies’ Man (F.P.)

4. The rude principal administering the detention. What’s his damage? He won’t even let these kids go to the bathroom!

5. The story kicks off in Saturday detention. All the kids have landed themselves there for various reasons. Sound familiar?

PHOTO: The CW

6. “Secrets and Sins.” It’s a game the kids play during detention where they confess their deepest, darkest secrets. They do this while sitting cross-legged on the floor—just like the scene in The Breakfast Club.

7. F.P.’s letterman jacket. Is that Emilio Estevez I see?

PHOTO: The CW

8. The contentious, abusive relationship between F.P. and his father. It mirrors the abuse John Bender (Judd Nelson) details at the hand of his dad in TBC.

9. The eighties-tinged music. It’s the perfect soundtrack. Listen closely for the “Take on Me” instrumental.

10. The lunch unpacking scene. At their second detention, the kids unpack their food for lunch time. Penelope has a prim-and-proper canteen. F.P.’s just eating a sandwich. Molly Ringwald easily could be in this scene eating sushi.

PHOTO: The CW

11. The secret romances. Well, quasi-romances. F.P. and Hermione share a sweet moment while playing G&G at school, and so do Alice and Fred. It’s exactly like when John and Claire (Ringwald) kiss in The Breakfast Club.

There Were Plenty of Royal Wedding References at Spring 2019 Bridal Fashion Week

The countdown for the royal wedding is nearing its end, and the identity of the designer who will create Meghan Markle‘s wedding gown remains a case for the FBI. We know traditional style rules are not Markle’s thing—and regardless of what brand gets the ultimate honor, you can pretty much expect her dress to inspire plenty of bridal trends in the near future.

Even without any leads or sketches to work off of, designers at New York’s Bridal Fashion Week clearly had the royal wedding at the forefront of their collective consciousness: Regal details, dresses inspired by palaces, and a whole lot of tiaras made their way down the Spring 2019 runways in startling quantities. (Oh, and plenty of English Breakfast tea was on offer to guests.) So if you were following the shows and noticed a princess-like ballgown or a glittering crown on a model and thought to yourself: Hm, is this supposed to be a royal wedding reference? It may not have been laid out as explicitly in the show notes, but it wouldn’t be that much of a leap to make the connection.

Ahead, we revisit eight collections that subtly and not-so-subtly referenced the new People’s Princess—or the idea of a “royal wedding” more broadly—for Spring 2019 bridal.

We bring you the trends. You make them your own. Sign up for our daily newsletter to find the best fashion for YOU.

Taylor Swift Fans Spotted Snake References in Her 'End Game' Music Video

Taylor Swift’s music video for “End Game” has dropped, and if you thought she was going to leave the snake motif in 2017, think again. In fact, the pop star now appears to be doubling down on the whole snake thing for the new year, featuring not one, not two, but at least four serpenty references in her new video. She puts a slew of snakes in very obvious places, making sure to include enough lingering close-ups for social media-bound screen-caps. And as usual, Twitter has spotted them all.

The premise of “End Game,” which features Future and Ed Sheeran, is that Swift is partying in three cities around the world with her friends. All of these parties take place at night, the implication being that Swift’s reputation is so bad she has to be ferried from soiree to soiree under the cover of darkness. The first snake pops up in city number 1, Miami. As Taylor Swift saunters down a hotel hallway with Future, a black earring wrapped with a silver snake can be spotted dangling from her ears. The second and third snakes reside in city number 2, Tokyo. Spotted by eagle-eyed Swifties @steady7phine and @rebekahswiftie, Swift enjoys a drink with a neon green snake-shaped stirrer while she parties with Ed Sheeran and zooms down the streets of Tokyo in a snakeskin-printed suit, respectively.

Swift, however, saves the best for last, in city number 3, London. In a very aggressive visual pun, the “Look What You Made Me Do” singer sits on a bar-top playing the mobile game “Snake”, while a clubgoer feeds her a drink. As explained by YouTuber Raphael Gomes and Twitter user @swiftienanami, Swift is, literally, “playing snake.” And, better yet, she’s on level “1-3” referencing her lucky number.

Swift has not been subtle about her snake-reclaiming branding, having decked herself in snake-shaped jewelry since before Reputation dropped, literally handling a serpent while sipping tea in her “Look What You Made Me Do” video, and even sending out a “ssssss”-filled card over the holidays. If you’re growing weary of the references, though, they’re probably not going to end any time soon. This is, after all, the woman who has written almost an entire album about a moment that’s ancient history in Kardashian-Jenner years.
