This Mom Threw Her Son a 21st Birthday Party at ‘Club Quarantine’ Because of the Coronavirus

It seems everything is on hold in the era of the coronavirus: schools, restaurants, stores. You name it. Bars across the nation are also shutting their doors to promote social distancing and try to keep the number of COVID-19 cases from completely overwhelming our health care system. But just because the clubs aren’t open doesn’t mean American kids have stopped turning 21.

One of those Gen-Zers is Jack Torchia, who returned from college to isolate with his family in New Jersey. When his plans to party with his family and friends fell through, his mother, Carolyn, took it upon herself to make sure he had the full club-hopping experience, even if it had to happen in her husband’s “man cave.”

At midnight on March 22, Jack’s 18-year-old sister, Emily, captured the whole thing before putting it on the popular social media app TikTok. It currently has over 4.5 million views.

“Let’s see some ID, please,” father/“security guard” Anthony Torchia requests before allowing his son to enter “Club Quarantine.”

His mother was situated behind the bar to provide drinks. “It’s our policy that we give you a free green tea shot,” she says in the video before pouring one out for her son, the “bouncer,” and herself.

Emily, who returned home from Penn State due to the coronavirus pandemic, told Glamour that this type of gesture is par for the course with her family. “My mom comes from a very big and passionate family, so we do stuff like this all the time, surprisingly,” she said over Instagram. “It took about a day since my garage is already a ‘man cave.’ My parents just moved stuff around and then added decorations!”

With two kids home from college earlier than expected, the Torchia family has been using this time to reconnect. “My family has always been very close, but this situation definitely made us closer, which I didn’t think was possible,” Emily said.

“My dad is the most excited, which is the funny part,” she adds about her parents’ reactions to their new TikTok fame. “My mom was very touched by the positive comments people wrote about them as parents, as well.”

It looks like these DIY birthday parties are becoming somewhat of a trend on TikTok and Twitter while the nation hunkers down to protect themselves and others from contracting COVID-19. CNN’s Saba Hamedy shared a few more of these makeshift celebrations on her Twitter:

Honestly, all these parents are killing it right now.

Goldie, Bette, and Diane Are Reuniting for the First Time Since First Wives Club

First Wives Club hive, it’s time to get excited. That’s because Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler, and Diane Keaton are set to reunite on the big screen for the first time since their beloved 1996 film.

Unfortunately, it’s not a sequel—but we’ll take any combination of these three icons we can get. Deadline reported the trio will star in Family Jewels which they called as a “multigenerational family comedy” and production will hopefully start later this year. Here’s what they had to say about the plot: “Hawn, Midler and Keaton’s characters are forced to spend the Christmas holidays together, along with their kids and grandkids, after the man they were all once married to drops dead in a New York City department store.”

Okay, there’s enough of that First Wives Club DNA to make us feel all the good nostalgia feelings. “The chemistry of Diane, Bette and Goldie is unmatched and irresistible, and I’m thrilled to help reunite them on screen for generations of fans,” Bradley Fischer, one of the producers, told Deadline.

In case, for some wild reason, you have missed out on the hilarity and heart of The First Wives Club—Hawn, Midler, and Keaton play college besties Annie, Elise, and Brenda who have lost touch, but come together after a fourth friend, Cynthia, dies by suicide after her ex-husband remarries a much younger woman. Each is dealing with her own philandering husband and together they concoct plans to get revenge on the men. Thus, The First Wives Club is born.

It is truly one of the most rewatchable movies ever and you won’t want to miss a hilarious turn by Sarah Jessica Parker as Shelly, the much younger girlfriend of Brenda’s Morty. The movie is currently available to rent on Amazon Prime Video and iTunes, so you can watch for the first or the fortieth time over the weekend and sing along to the iconic “You Don’t Own Me” scene.

In the meantime, we’ll be anxiously awaiting the first trailer for Family Jewels.

Constance Wu Made $600 Dancing at a Strip Club While Preparing for Hustlers

We’re still not over the Hustlers snubs at this year’s Oscars—but we’re loving this new story about Constance Wu’s time researching her role as the stripper Destiny in the movie.

Wu appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show on Monday,February 17 and revealed some behind-the-scenes intel about her preparation. “I did work at a strip club to get ready for Hustlers,” she said. “I went undercover. I gave lap dances to strangers.”

But that’s not all. The Fresh Off the Boat star actually took home some serious cash for her efforts. “I’m not lying! I made $600 my first night. I am not being funny, and it was not funny,” Wu said. “I put fake tattoos on my neck, I changed my hair… You can’t duplicate the first time you walk into a club and say, ‘Hey, I’d like to have a job here,’ and then you go work that night.”

Watch the interview below.

In Hustlers, Wu plays a single mom in New York City who joins forces with Jennifer Lopez’s character, Ramona, and two other dancer friends to steal money and valuables from rich clients during the 2008 financial crisis. The film, written and directed by Lorene Scafaria, was based on a true story chronicled in a New York magazine article.

Constance Wu previously said she visited a number of strip clubs to get into character and even installed a pole in her house. “I went to a lot of strip clubs in San Francisco — that’s what I spent my Christmas Eve doing,” she told Vulture.

“I installed a pole in my living room. I took pole classes; I took private coaching sessions,” she added. “And this was all stuff I paid for by myself before we even started the movie. I became friends with a couple of strippers.”

Given the box office success of the film, we’d say all that research paid off.

Everything We Know About Netflix's The Baby-Sitters Club Series

Long before they were trying to decide who was a Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, or Samantha in a friend group, many women of a certain age labeled themselves as Kristys, Dawns, Mary Annes, Staceys, or Claudias—all thanks to the massively popular The Baby-Sitters Club books by Ann M. Martin, the first of which was published in 1986. The books follow the lives of a group of young friends who start a baby-sitting service and all the ups and downs of their lives and business.

So today is a very happy day for fans of the novels as Netflix has just announced that it is turning them into a series starring Alicia Silverstone. With over 200 books currently in publication, the streaming platform will certainly not lack for source material for storylines.

No word yet how—if at all—this new series will nod to the 1995 film version of The Baby-Sitters Club, which starred Rachael Leigh Cook, Schuyler Fisk, Larisa Oleynik, Bre Blair, Stacy Linn Ramsower, Zelda Harris, and Tricia Joe in the lead roles.

While we don’t have a ton of details yet, here’s everything we know so far.

1. The release date. Netflix hasn’t announced the streaming date, but according to a press release the service has ordered 10 episodes.

2. The location. Just like the books, the show will take place in the fictional town of Stoneybrook, Connecticut.

3. The cast. The actors playing Kristy Thomas, Mary Anne Spier, Claudia Kishi, Stacey McGill, and Dawn Schafer have not been announced. However, we do know that Alicia Silverstone will play Elizabeth Thomas-Brewer, the mother of Kristy Thomas, and Royal Pains star Mark Feuerstein will play her love interest, Watson Brewer.

*Riverdale* Season 3 Episode 4 Recap: All the *Breakfast Club* References

This week’s episode of Riverdale went back in time and saw our favorite teens playing their parents. KJ Apa played young Fred Andrews, Lili Reinhart played young Alice Cooper, Camila Mendes played young Hermione Lodge, and so on and so forth. It was a fun episode—and as trippy as you’d expect. Apa even dyed his hair black for the occasion!

But the episode didn’t really move season three’s plot along. Instead, we learned how the Riverdale parents first came into contact with Gryphons & Gargoyles, the creepy game that’s slowly taking over the town and killing some of the students at Riverdale High. It turns out the parents were just as invested in G&G as their kids—and they may have even played a hand in one of the game’s first murders.

That’s certainly intriguing, but the best part of the episode has nothing to do with Gryphons & Gargoyles: It’s all the Breakfast Club references made throughout. Everything from the costumes to the dialogue and even some of the plot points feels like it came straight out of the John Hughes classic. Watching this episode must’ve been wild for Molly Ringwald, Luke Perry, Skeet Ulrich, and all the other Riverdale parents who were once huge teen stars. This flashback chapter was their lives at one point—literally, for Molly Ringwald.

Below, here are all the major references to The Breakfast Club tonight’s Riverdale episode made:

1. The title. It’s called “The Midnight Club.” Subtle.

2. Alice’s leather jacket and plaid shirt wrapped around her waist. It’s very reminiscent of Judd Nelson’s look in The Breakfast Club.

PHOTO: The CW

3. Their nicknames. The Bad Girl (Alice), the Rebelling Catholic (Hermione), the Teacher’s Pet (Penelope), the Artist-Athlete (Fred), the Political Animal (Sierra), and the Ladies’ Man (F.P.)

4. The rude principal administering the detention. What’s his damage? He won’t even let these kids go to the bathroom!

5. The story kicks off in Saturday detention. All the kids have landed themselves there for various reasons. Sound familiar?

PHOTO: The CW

6. “Secrets and Sins.” It’s a game the kids play during detention where they confess their deepest, darkest secrets. They do this while sitting cross-legged on the floor—just like the scene in The Breakfast Club.

7. F.P.’s letterman jacket. Is that Emilio Estevez I see?

PHOTO: The CW

8. The contentious, abusive relationship between F.P. and his father. It mirrors the abuse John Bender (Judd Nelson) details at the hand of his dad in TBC.

9. The eighties-tinged music. It’s the perfect soundtrack. Listen closely for the “Take on Me” instrumental.

10. The lunch unpacking scene. At their second detention, the kids unpack their food for lunch time. Penelope has a prim-and-proper canteen. F.P.’s just eating a sandwich. Molly Ringwald easily could be in this scene eating sushi.

PHOTO: The CW

11. The secret romances. Well, quasi-romances. F.P. and Hermione share a sweet moment while playing G&G at school, and so do Alice and Fred. It’s exactly like when John and Claire (Ringwald) kiss in The Breakfast Club.
