Did Jennifer Lopez shade the Oscars during her Super Bowl halftime performance? That’s what some fans on Twitter think.

Here’s what happened: Midway through the pop icon’s set, she did a pole dance to her hit nineties song “Waiting for Tonight.” She killed it, obviously, and that’s largely because she completed serious pole dancing training for her performance in the 2019 movie Hustlers. Her turn as Ramona in that movie generated Lopez serious awards season buzz. Many thought she was a shoe-in for a Best Supporting Actress nomination, but she was snubbed.

So it’s funny that Lopez busted out one of the skills she was lauded for in Hustlers during her Super Bowl halftime show. “Jennifer Lopez started her Super Bowl halftime performance on a pole to remind the Oscars how badly they messed up by not nominating her for Hustlers,” one fan tweeted, while another wrote, “J.Lo said, ‘I trained for MONTHS for Hustlers and didn’t get an Oscar nom. I am getting on the poll at the #SuperBowl and you can’t stop me.'”

Jennifer Lopez and Shakira headlined the Super Bowl 2020 halftime show, which happened Sunday, February 2, and they certainly did not disappoint. Both women are known for their impeccable, awe-inspiring showmanship: choreography, theatrics, an X-factor, the works. And they brought all of those elements to (arguably) the world’s biggest stage for 12 glorious minutes.

The performance was a seamless hybrid of Lopez and Shakira’s discographies. They performed songs both together and apart. And they didn’t miss a beat, either. That’s to be expected, of course: After all, they’re both total pros who have been in this business for decades. It’s no surprise they delivered one of the best halftime shows in recent memory.

Both Shakira and Lopez performed several of their greatest hits, including “She Wolf,” “Whenever, Wherever,” “Jenny From the Block,” “Let’s Get Loud,” and “On the Floor.”

Lopez and Shakira released the sweetest statements about each other when it was announced they’d be co-headlining the Super Bowl 2020 halftime show.

Demi Lovato's National Anthem at the Super Bowl 2020 Was So Powerful


Fresh off her moving performance at the 2020 Grammys, Demi Lovato returned to the spotlight on Sunday, February 2 to perform the national anthem at the Super Bowl in Miami, Florida. This is the 27-year-old singer’s second performance since her July 2018 overdose.

Like her Grammys performance⁠—in which she debuted a new song, “Anyone”⁠—Lovato’s take on the national anthem was arresting and poignant. Of course, she was met with rapturous applause after finishing the song.

Here are some reactions to Demi’s performance:

Demi Lovato has been through so much over the past two years. After her overdose, she was hospitalized and then subsequently went into treatment. She addressed this herself in August 2018 on Instagram.

“I have always been transparent about my journey with addiction,” she wrote at the time. “What I’ve learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time. It is something I must continue to overcome and have not done yet.”

She continued, “I want to thank God for keeping me alive and well. To my fans, I am forever grateful for all of your love and support throughout this past week and beyond. Your positive thoughts and prayers have helped me navigate through this difficult time. I want to thank my family, my team, and the staff at Cedars-Sinai who have been by my side this entire time. Without them I wouldn’t be here writing this letter to all of you. I now need time to heal and focus on my sobriety and road to recovery. The love you have all shown me will never be forgotten and I look forward to the day where I can say I came out on the other side. I will keep fighting.”

She seems to be in a much better place now. Shortly after her incredible Grammys performance, she took to Instagram and said, “What an unbelievable night. My first time back on stage in almost 2 years. So emotional for me. Thank you all for the love, support and for sharing this moment with me. I love you all.”

Non-sports lovers have a few things to look forward to with this year’s Super Bowl. Demi Lovato is singing the national anthem. Jennifer Lopez and Shakira will be doing the halftime show. So basically, we’re talking about a full pop concert with some football happening in between.

The Super Bowl commercials are consistently a cut above what you see during regular prime-time programming: They’re usually funnier, more clever and/or tear-jerking, and packed with celebrity cameos. “Time for this snack to get a snack,” Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness says in this spot for Pop-Tarts. The only problem? All the available food options aren’t up to JVN’s standards. Looks like a certain frosted pastry giant will have to come in and fix the problem….

Real Housewives of New Jersey rivals Teresa Giudice and Caroline Manzo star in this new spot from Sabra, which has them in glamorous red gowns, eating hummus and talking in surprisingly hushed tones. No table flipping? No yelling? No one-liners? The extended commercial will certainly include something dramatic, right?

Winona Ryder returns to her hometown of Winona, Minnesota, in this spot for the website-building company. The premise is simple but cute: Ryder is building a website next to the Winona, Minnesota, sign when a cop stops by and asks what she’s doing. Watch on to see what happens.

John Cena and Jimmy Fallon go on a kooky fitness journey in this new ad for Michelob Ultra. This is a relatable commercial: Working out next to the living hulk that is John Cena indeed would require beer afterwards.

John Krasinski, Rachel Dratch, and Chris Evans put on some over-the-top Boston accents in this cheeky commercial about the Hyundai Sonata, which features new technology that lets the car park itself. All three actors were actually born in Boston—and Fallon and Dratch immortalized the accent with their recurring SNL sketch—which makes things extra clever.

The Best Super Bowl Halftime Shows of All Time


I’m here to end the debate about what the best Super Bowl halftime shows are once and for all. I don’t even need to have seen all of them to know the answer. I just need to know one thing: Did a female pop star headline? If yes, it’s on the list of the best Super Bowl halftime shows. If it’s no, well, sorry to those men.

Based on my scientific research—watching YouTube videos—I have determined that female performers make the best Super Bowl halftime headliners. While the men think wearing questionable camouflage or taking their shirts off will dazzle crowds, women give us choreography. And pyrotechnics. And giant stuffed sharks. They emphasize the show in halftime show, and we’re more entertained for it.

That’s why I’m so pleased to see that Jennifer Lopez and Shakira will be co-headlining the 2020 Super Bowl halftime show. They no doubt will serve us something life-changing and on par with the queens that have come before them. Why would you want to watch some dude strum a guitar when Lady Gaga’s getting launched from the roof? My point exactly.

But if you’re still not convinced, let’s go through these six female-led Super Bowl halftime shows that prove it even more:

Not only did Gaga give us aerial tricks, neon sets, and precision dancing, she sang every note 100 percent live.

By far one of Perry’s strongest vocal performances to date, her halftime show also included several scene changes and dancers in costume. Football games are way more entertaining when they’re broken up by dancing sharks.

I…can’t even come up with the words to properly describe this one. It’s arguably the best halftime show of all time. Male or female. Period. When Michelle and Kelly jumped out of the stage midway through? Name a more culturally relevant moment.

Rihanna Confirms She Turned Down the Super Bowl Halftime Show


Last year it was reported that Rihanna had turned down an offer to headline the Super Bowl halftime show in support of the NFL players who opted to kneel during the national anthem. (The athletes did this to peacefully protest police brutality in black communities.) This movement started with San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who eventually filed a grievance against the NFL. In a new interview with Vogue, Rihanna confirmed that she did, indeed, pass on the Super Bowl to stand with Kaepernick.

“I couldn’t dare do that,” she said. “For what? Who gains from that? Not my people. I just couldn’t be a sellout. I couldn’t be an enabler. There’s things within that organization that I do not agree with at all, and I was not about to go and be of service to them in any way.”

Rihanna addressed other political topics in her Vogue interview, as well. When the writer brought up President Donald Trump, who urged the NFL to fire players who kneeled during the anthem, and his recent characterization of shootings in El Paso and Dayton as part of a “mental illness problem,” she didn’t hold back.

“People are being murdered by war weapons that they legally purchase,” she said. “This is just not normal. That should never, ever be normal. And the fact that it’s classified as something different because of the color of their skin? It’s a slap in the face. It’s completely racist…. Put an Arab man with that same weapon in that same Walmart and there is no way that Trump would sit there and address it publicly as a mental health problem. The most mentally ill human being in America right now seems to be the president.”

Rihanna also talked about her recent move to London and said that, although she’s thousands of miles away, she doesn’t feel removed from the political climate in America: “When I see something happen to any woman, a woman of any minority, kids, black men being murdered in the streets—I can’t remove myself from that.”
