Rose McGowan Calls Natalie Portman's Oscars Cape Highlighting Female Directors ‘Offensive’

She calls Portman “part of the problem” with her “fake support of other women.”

“There is no law that says you need to hire women, work with women, or support women. By all means, you do you. But I am saying stop pretending you’re some kind of champion for anything other than yourself,” McGowan continued. “As for me, I’ll be over here raising my voice and fighting for change without any compensation. That is activism. Until you and your fellow actresses get real, do us all a favor and hang up your embroidered activist cloak, it doesn’t hang right.”

McGowan continued in her post, “I was at a Women in Film event that you spoke at once, Natalie. You reeled off depressing statistics and then we all went back to our salads. I quickly realized you and the other women speakers (and that joke of an organization) are just… frauds. You say nothing, you do nothing.”

Portman responded with a statement of her own, per The Hollywood Reporter. “I agree with Ms. McGowan that it is inaccurate to call me ‘brave’ for wearing a garment with women’s names on it. ‘Brave’ is a term I more strongly associate with actions like those of the women who have been testifying against Harvey Weinstein the last few weeks, under incredible pressure,” she said.

She also acknowledged the fact that she has not worked with a huge number of female directors over the course of her career. “It is true I’ve only made a few films with women. In my long career, I’ve only gotten the chance to work with female directors a few times—I’ve made shorts, commercials, music videos and features with Marya Cohen, Mira Nair, Rebecca Zlotowski, Anna Rose Holmer, Sofia Coppola, Shirin Neshat and myself,” Portman said. “Unfortunately, the unmade films I have tried to make are a ghost history.”

But, she says, that doesn’t account for all the projects that never went forward. “I have had the experience a few times of helping get female directors hired on projects which they were then forced out of because of the conditions they faced at work,” she said. “So I want to say, I have tried, and I will keep trying. While I have not yet been successful, I am hopeful that we are stepping into a new day.”

Director Marielle Heller said hers was one of those projects Portman is referencing.

Rose McGowan has not commented on Natalie Portman’s statement.

We Have a New Oscars Selfie, People—and It's So Good

Remember at the 2014 Academy Awards when host Ellen DeGeneres took the now-iconic “Oscars selfie” with several movie stars? Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Lupita Nyong’o, and more celebrities all gathered around DeGeneres during the live broadcast to take the pic, and it soon went viral. Remember, this was before Kim Kardashian popularized the selfie, so this blurry pic was quite novel. Now, selfies are everywhere.

But Oscar selfies aren’t. That’s why what Charlize Theron just posted to her Instagram is so cool. On Tuesday, February 11 (two days after the 2020 Oscars), the Bombshell actor uploaded a new Oscars selfie, seemingly taken during the broadcast. It features herself alongside big names like Tom Hanks, Regina King, Salma Hayek, and Rami Malek, and it’s nothing short of legendary. Check it out for yourself, below. I believe we officially have a new Oscars selfie, my friends.

The 2020 Oscars wasn’t exactly the most eventful (or watched) broadcast in the show’s history. That being said, the South Korean film Parasite did have a historic night, taking home Best Picture, Best International Feature Film, Best Director (Bong Joon-ho), and Best Original Screenplay. It’s too bad Bong didn’t jump into this selfie!

“Thank you. After winning Best International Feature, I thought I was done for the day and was ready to relax,” Bong said during his Best Director acceptance speech. “Thank you so much. When I was young and studying cinema, there was a saying that I carved deep into my heart, which is that ‘The most personal is the most creative.’ That quote is from our great Martin Scorsese. When I was in school, I studied Martin Scorsese’s films. Just to be nominated was a huge honor. I never thought I would win.”

Jennifer Lopez Was Too Busy Looking Iconic at an Oscars After-Party to Worry About Her Snub

I’m sure Lopez had a blast at whatever after-party she chose to hit up. Here’s hoping she had a kiki with the other MVPs of awards season (in my eyes): Laura Dern, Florence Pugh, and Bong Joon-ho. You know they all wanted Lopez to get nominated for Hustlers.

Let’s take a moment to reflect on one of Lopez’s captions from last night: “Dance the night away, live your life and stay young on the floor.” She quoted her own lyrics, people. I truly cannot stress that enough. The power that she has.

J.Lo also graced our feeds with a full-body moment on her Instagram Stories:

Of course, Jennifer Lopez’s snub is not the Oscars’s only notable misstep. The Academy conveniently forgot that female directors are a thing and that the actors in Parasite probably contributed to its raging success. At this point, the Oscars’s only saving grace is all of Bong Joon-ho’s wins, Janelle Monae, and Brad Pitt’s tongue. Otherwise, they were a Jennifer-Lopez-less disappointment.

Here’s hoping next year we see a more diverse batch of nominees and maybe even a retroactive Oscar nom for J.Lo. What? It could happen! I’m putting it in the universe.

Jane Fonda Wanted Gray Hair to 'Surprise Everyone' at the Oscars

The Oscars 2020 brought many amazing fashion and beauty moments—but one of the best came at the very end of the night as Jane Fonda walked onto the stage to present the award for Best Picture to Parasite in a dress she recycled from 2014 and striking short, gray hair.

Fonda always looks phenomenal but this may have been one of her best looks yet—and her hair color was a very conscious choice. Her colorist Jack Martin shared some of the thinking behind the decision in a lovely Instagram post.

“I had the honor and the pleasure to transform the legendary actress @janefonda hair specially for the 2020 Oscar. Spending 7 hours with this amazing Hollywood star and witnessing her energy, beauty, strength and femininity was so inspiring,” he wrote. “For straight 7 hours while I was working on her hair she was writing chapters in her due soon book, and memorizing her lines in the famous tv show Frankie and grace [sic] that she is shooting the 7th season now, answering emails and reading her newspapers plus communicating with me and her team with the sweetest, humblest soul, she made me feel ashamed to complain of being tired.”

For a woman who’s been making both political and sartorial statements for the entirety of her career, it’s powerful to see her embracing the beauty of gray hair—especially during a time when so many women are pushing back against the idea that going gray means “giving up.” According to Martin, her decision to color her hair was purely for fun, plain and simple.

“Her goal color was a silver icy blonde to surprise everyone at the 2020 Oscars,” Martin continued, before sharing the formula he used in case you’d like your own colorist to give this a go. “Jane was extremely happy for getting her dream hair that took her a while to find a colorist that can do it perfectly in a very painless process.”

Naturally, Jane Fonda’s new look had a lot of fans on social media too.

Cheers to an 82-year-old icon who continues to live life on her own terms.

The Oscars 2020 After-Party Dresses You May Have Missed

After Parasite took home Best Picture at the Oscars 2020, the night was really just beginning, as the stars headed out to various after-parties around town. In fact, many of the soirées were packed with guests during the actual ceremony because some stars watch the show together just like us regular folk. They just happen to be wearing gowns and oodles of sparkling jewels that most of us can only dream of putting on.

From the famed Vanity Fair party to the annual event hosted by (Oscar winner) Elton John, the stars really turned out in their finest designer looks for Hollywood’s biggest night. Riverdale‘s Madelaine Petsch opted for a bright pink gown while Tracee Ellis Ross, Rashida Jones, Sharon Stone, and Christina Hendricks went the timeless, classic route with black dresses. Meanwhile former in-laws Caitlynn Jenner and Kaitlynn Carter both arrived at parties in white.

Check out some of the best after-party dresses from the Oscars 2020.

Luke Perry Was Left Out of the Oscars 2020 In Memoriam—and People Are Upset

The Oscars 2020 ceremony didn’t have any big mistakes of the La La Land/Moonlight variety, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to criticize. Of course, there was the noticeable lack of representation for female filmmakers and people of color, which the show seemed to try to quell with interstitial segments celebrating them. Maybe next year, we can just nominate them. Cool? Cool.

But there was also a notable omission from the show’s In Memoriam segment, which featured Billie Eilish singing “Yesterday”: Luke Perry. The actor died in March 2019 at just the age of 52, and while he was best known for TV shows like Beverly Hills, 90210 and more recently, Riverdale, he also appeared in a number of films. In fact, one of Perry’s final roles was in Quentin Tarantino’s Oscar-nominated Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. How do we leave out someone who’s in one of the Best Picture contenders?

Fans (myself included) were rightfully upset on social media.

We bet Leonardo DiCaprio wasn’t thrilled either. “I was immediately struck by his kindness,” he told Entertainment Weekly last year about Perry, his Once Upon a Time in Hollywood costar. “And talking about being a native of Los Angeles, being around this industry my entire life, and really having it in a lot of ways shape who I am, there was this immediate excitement in seeing Luke Perry on set. I remember being in my teens and he was the manifestation of the new [James] Dean on television and everyone was crazy about him. And I felt this overwhelming feeling of being star-struck. Then he and I got to sit down and talk about Los Angeles, the ’90s, his life, where his career had gone, where my career had gone, where his life had gone, where my life…and I was just so, how do I say this, the kindness of his character, I don’t know, it really affected me. When I heard that news it was really heartbreaking.”
