Demi Lovato's National Anthem at the Super Bowl 2020 Was So Powerful

Fresh off her moving performance at the 2020 Grammys, Demi Lovato returned to the spotlight on Sunday, February 2 to perform the national anthem at the Super Bowl in Miami, Florida. This is the 27-year-old singer’s second performance since her July 2018 overdose.

Like her Grammys performance—in which she debuted a new song, “Anyone”—Lovato’s take on the national anthem was arresting and poignant. Of course, she was met with rapturous applause after finishing the song.

Here are some reactions to Demi’s performance:

Demi Lovato has been through so much over the past two years. After her overdose, she was hospitalized and then subsequently went into treatment. She addressed this herself in August 2018 on Instagram.

“I have always been transparent about my journey with addiction,” she wrote at the time. “What I’ve learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time. It is something I must continue to overcome and have not done yet.”

She continued, “I want to thank God for keeping me alive and well. To my fans, I am forever grateful for all of your love and support throughout this past week and beyond. Your positive thoughts and prayers have helped me navigate through this difficult time. I want to thank my family, my team, and the staff at Cedars-Sinai who have been by my side this entire time. Without them I wouldn’t be here writing this letter to all of you. I now need time to heal and focus on my sobriety and road to recovery. The love you have all shown me will never be forgotten and I look forward to the day where I can say I came out on the other side. I will keep fighting.”

She seems to be in a much better place now. Shortly after her incredible Grammys performance, she took to Instagram and said, “What an unbelievable night. My first time back on stage in almost 2 years. So emotional for me. Thank you all for the love, support and for sharing this moment with me. I love you all.”

Stassi Schroeder Will Never Wear a Bikini on National Television Again

My fascination with Bravo runs deep. The formerly humble, semi-highbrow network was once known for re-runs of Twin Peaks and episodes of Inside the Actors’ Studio, but in the early 2000s a seed was planted. Bravo created a “reality” show that followed five gay men making over straight dudes around the country. The rest is pretty much pop culture history. From the Real Housewives franchise to Southern Charm, the network has spent the last decade or so making legitimate celebrities out of its reality talent, most of whom have millions upon millions of Instagram followers and fans who have opinions on their every move.

One such star: Stassi Schroeder, the queen bee of Vanderpump Rules, one of the crowned jewels in Bravo’s repertoire. The show—which kicks off its eighth season tonight— follows servers and bartenders at Sur, an LA restaurant owned by former Real Housewife of Beverly Hills Lisa Vanderpump. During her tenture, Stassi has been called a lot of things: a mean girl, entitled, annoying, a bitch. But she’s also been praised for being relatable, funny, honest, and undeniably herself.

When we met, Stassi had just finished speaking at Glamour’s annual Women of the Year summit where she gave a talk about how some people can be assholes, and that’s OK—certainly an on-brand topic for the 31-year-old. In person, I found her to be friendly, funny, and highly engaging—whether the result of media training or just being a grounded person, she made strong eye contact and was fully committed to our chat.

We talked about the show, yes, but also about her upcoming wedding to boyfriend Beau Clark, a new cast-memeber on Vanderpump (look out for her new bridal column on Glamour this week!) In typical Stassi fashion, though, she refused to tell me a single detail about her dress. She was forthcoming about her life in the public eye—she firmly said she’ll never wear a bikini on television again—and how it feels when people try to cancel her on social media. I asked her about the holiday she bought (just listen — it’ll make sense) and—something we both unapologetically agree on—how shopping can be one of the great stress relievers.

I wasn’t shocked when she asked me which VPR cast-member was the most annoying on social media, and not surprisingly, I had an answer for her.

The U.S. Women's National Soccer Team Is Having More Fun Than All of Us Right Now

On Sunday (July 7), the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team defeated the Netherlands to win a record fourth World Cup—and they haven’t stopped celebrating since.

Nor should they. It’s a phenomenal accomplishment, and most of the country is still on a high right alongside the players, including Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan, and Rose Levelle, who scored the second goal to secure the U.S. victory in the finals.

While most of us will not get a chance to party with these women IRL, we can all live vicariously through their social media profiles. Ashlyn Harris has been the absolute MVP in documenting the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team shenanigans—her Instagram Stories are an utter delight. Do yourself a huge favor and take a look at all the action from last night’s yacht party and today’s parade in New York City.

Here are just a few of the highlights:

The U.S. Women's National Soccer Team Just Won the World Cup, and Twitter's Losing It

The dynasty is strong. On Sunday, July 7, the U.S. Women’s National Team took home the FIFA Women’s World Cup—its fourth ever—after a 2-0 victory against the Netherlands in Lyon, France. Not only did the women of the USWNT clench back to back championships, they set a new record for most goals scored in a single world cup. It’s official: the women of the USWNT are legends.

From the very first game, the team showed up, sweeping the rankings as they followed their 2015 World Cup win in Canada. The Netherlands started out the game strong—as the New York Times points out, they were the only team the U.S. went up against during the tournament that were able to keep the USWNT from scoring in the first half of the game.

Things changed in the second half, with Megan Rapinoe—the oldest player to score in a World Cup final at 34 years old—scoring the first goal in the match with a penalty kick. Rose Lavelle sealed the win with a second goal for the team.

The win is resonating with fans around the world—especially on Twitter.

Along with the GOAT shoutouts, fans on Twitter are also calling out the issue of equal pay: In the last World Cup cycle, the men’s tournament winners took home 17.5 times more than the US women in 2015.

A lawsuit surrounding the team’s pay discrepancy is ongoing, but it’s clear these women are champions—and should be paid like it.

I Went on National TV in My Lingerie. It Changed What Body Positivity Meant to Me.

Sure, it was a little weird to stand next to Kathie Lee and Hoda in my sexy pajamas. Sure, I was a little uncomfortable. Sure, I was having visions of accidentally projectile vomiting on Kathie Lee Gifford. But I went with it. And the world kept spinning. (Also, important to note: I did not vomit on anyone.)

I wish I could say I walked off the set feeling empowered and confident. But the truth is, I went to watch the clip after we wrapped and my stomach dropped. I immediately started picking myself apart: My cellulite was visible; I looked angry (my default facial expression when I’m feeling most high-stakes emotions); I kept fidgeting. This reaction wasn’t new for me—it’s been my knee-jerk response to seeing images of myself that I wasn’t in control of for the last decade.

Still, there was something different about this.

I had heard a voice screaming in my head to stop, to not pass go, to turn around—and I tuned it out, walked onto the set of the Today Show, and modeled sexy pajamas. I had professional hair and makeup done and stood in great lighting for 10 seconds. I didn’t feel embarrassed or horrified. I felt like I had just woken up.

For so many years, my choices (in fashion, and in everything else) weren’t affected just because of that loud, angry voice telling me what my body was and wasn’t allowed to participate in. It was because I trusted it. I thought it was saving me—from ultimate humiliation, from embarrassment, from someone thinking I wasn’t good enough. Now, I knew that voice was a fucking liar.

The thing is, when you do that big, ridiculous, scary, terrifying thing that every part of you insists you’re not supposed to do—because of how you look, because of what you weigh, because of the size of your clothes, because you might fail—and the world manages to go on, you wake up. You wake up to the fact that for a long time, you’ve been saying no to opportunities both big and small.

You remember saying no to pool parties. You remember wearing a cardigan in the middle of summer and sweating for no reason. You remember deleting thousands of photos, millions of memories. You remember it all. And then, you say no more. No more of that. You say it’s time to make up for lost time, and then? Then you start saying yes.
