Super Bowl Commercials 2020: The Best Celebrity Appearances

Check back here for all the updates on Super Bowl commercials 2020.

Non-sports lovers have a few things to look forward to with this year’s Super Bowl. Demi Lovato is singing the national anthem. Jennifer Lopez and Shakira will be doing the halftime show. So basically, we’re talking about a full pop concert with some football happening in between.

And as always, we have commercials. The Super Bowl commercials are consistently a cut above what you see during regular prime-time programming: They’re usually funnier, more clever and/or tear-jerking, and packed with celebrity cameos. This year is no exception. But if you’re not watching the big game, it’s all good: We have a roundup of all the pop culture-y Super Bowl commercials worth watching.

Without further ado, let’s go through the best celebrity appearances from Super Bowl commercials 2020:

Olay

Taraji P. Henson, Busy Philipps, Lily Singh, Katie Couric, and actual astronaut Nicole Stott star in this spot for the skin-care brand. The commercial’s hashtag, #MakeSpaceForWomen, clearly has a double meaning. We can’t wait to see how this one unfolds.

Pop-Tarts

“Time for this snack to get a snack,” Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness says in this spot for Pop-Tarts. The only problem? All the available food options aren’t up to JVN’s standards. Looks like a certain frosted pastry giant will have to come in and fix the problem….

Avocados From Mexico

I never thought I needed to see Molly Ringwald put a crown on an avocado until I watched this commercial. Avocados from Mexico has a storied history of featuring celebrities in its Super Bowl commercials. Last year’s featured Broadway icon Kristin Chenoweth. A true legends-only club.

Sabra Hummus

Real Housewives of New Jersey rivals Teresa Giudice and Caroline Manzo star in this new spot from Sabra, which has them in glamorous red gowns, eating hummus and talking in surprisingly hushed tones. No table flipping? No yelling? No one-liners? The extended commercial will certainly include something dramatic, right?

Squarespace

Winona Ryder returns to her hometown of Winona, Minnesota, in this spot for the website-building company. The premise is simple but cute: Ryder is building a website next to the Winona, Minnesota, sign when a cop stops by and asks what she’s doing. Watch on to see what happens.

Michelob Ultra

John Cena and Jimmy Fallon go on a kooky fitness journey in this new ad for Michelob Ultra. This is a relatable commercial: Working out next to the living hulk that is John Cena indeed would require beer afterwards.

Hyundai Sonata

John Krasinski, Rachel Dratch, and Chris Evans put on some over-the-top Boston accents in this cheeky commercial about the Hyundai Sonata, which features new technology that lets the car park itself. All three actors were actually born in Boston—and Fallon and Dratch immortalized the accent with their recurring SNL sketch—which makes things extra clever.

Super Bowl Commercials 2019: These Will Get You Through the Actual Game

Though I attend a Super Bowl party almost every year, I’ve only been truly excited for the big game on two separate occasions: when Madonna played the halftime show in 2012 and when Lady Gaga did it in 2017. So aside from that, you can find me at any party for the big game nestled next to the snacks, waiting for the commercials.

Now, let’s be clear: A funny Groupon spot starring Tiffany Haddish isn’t the same thing as a Beyoncé, Gaga, or Katy Perry halftime show, but it does make the whole experience of sitting through an event you’re half-heartedly into a little more fun. For the years when the musical guest is less than thrilling—cough, like this year, cough—or the lineup is a dud—again, cough, this year—I turn to the best Super Bowl commercials for salvation. When the carbs run out, at least I’ll have a glitzy Pepsi ad as a talking point.

And the Super Bowl commercials this year are shaping up to be some of the funniest and most entertaining ever. Just a few highlights: Cardi B drinks a Pepsi, Christina Applegate gets locked out of her car, Serena Williams cashes that paycheck from Bumble. We’ll be updating this post until the big game with the best campaigns—and the ones featuring your favorite celebrities—so check back. Until then, here are our favorite commercials (and commercial previews) that we know about so far.

Who is locking Christina Applegate out of her car? My money is on the green M&M. She lives for the drama.

Lil’ Jon, Cardi B, and Steve Carell are all featured in separate spots advertising Pepsi’s Super Bowl commercial. So will there be three separate ads? Are they joining forces? Either way, I’m in desperate need of Cardi’s diamond Pepsi can.

Serena Williams will star in Bumble’s first-ever Super Bowl spot, which is themed “The Ball Is in Her Court,” empowering women to make the first move in their relationships.

Budweiser is now brewed with wind power, so, naturally, this commercial features a dog’s face blowing in the wind. So cute! So eco-friendly! I think I want to drink beer now?

The Best 2018 Super Bowl Commercials

The 2018 Super Bowl is this Sunday, and if you’re anything like me, you’re…not looking forward to it. Sports just aren’t my thing, you know? And neither is the halftime performer, Justin Timberlake—no shade to him—so there’s not really much enticing me to watch.

But there is one thing I’m excited about (well, dozens of things, if you want to get technical): the commercials. Each year the Super Bowl commercials get better and better, but I don’t need to tell you that. It’s pretty common knowledge. What you might not know, though, is that some of the commercials airing this Sunday have already premiered on the Internet—and they’re incredible. These 13 are particularly on point and feature so many of your faves, including Cardi B, Chris Pratt, and Rebel Wilson. Finally, football gets interesting!

Groupon

Tiffany Haddish stars in this hilarious spot, which shows what happens when you don’t want to support local business by using Groupon. Spoiler alert: Two football players come to your house and, like, physically hurt you. (Downloads Groupon immediately.)

Amazon Alexa

When Alexa’s voice gives out, leaving millions of people in turmoil, a slew of celebrities step in to take her place, including Rebel Wilson and Cardi B. All I want from now until I die is Anthony Hopkins telling me the weather every morning.

[embedded content]

Sprint

Evelyn is a new robot still in development—kind of like Sophia—but she’s advanced enough to tell this dude he’s paying way too much money for his phone bill. And laugh at him about it. Ice cold!

[embedded content]

Jack in the Box

It’s the battle of the Asian fried chicken sandwiches in this commercial: On one side, there’s Jack in the Box, with his fast-food version of the dish. And on the other there’s—wait for it—Martha Stewart, with her fancy sandwich. This is the celebrity feud we didn’t know we needed.

[embedded content]

M&Ms

Fed up with people wanting to eat him, the red M&M transforms himself into Danny DeVito and becomes elated when everyone leaves him alone. We’ve all been there, right? (OK, not really, but DeVito is pretty hysterical in this one.)

[embedded content]

Michelob Ultra

Literally the only reason to watch this clip is Chris Pratt’s abs—and that’s good enough for me.

[embedded content]

Avocados From Mexico

A group of people living in an avocado commune go wild when they realize their chip supply is out of reach. It’s a bizarre mix of The Hunger Games and Lord of the Flues…but, ya know, with guacamole. I’m both hungry and terrified.

[embedded content]

Pepsi

All of your favorites from past Pepsi commercials reunite in this cross-generational spot, including Cindy Crawford and Britney Spears. (Well, Britney Spears circa her 2001 Pepsi commercial, but still. Nostalgia!)

[embedded content]

Doritos Blaze and Mountain Dew Ice

Honestly, what was life before this clip of Morgan Freeman lip-synching Missy Elliott’s classic “Get Ur Freak On”? Please decorate him with all the Emmys.

[embedded content]

Wendy’s

Fast-food company shade is the best kind of shade, and Wendy’s serves it in abundance—against McDonald’s—in this cheeky spot.

[embedded content]

Tide

David Harbor from Stranger Things (!!!) and Terry Bradshaw playfully square off over who’s the best Tide spokesperson in this commercial. Sorry, Bradshaw, but we have to give the prize to Jim Hopper because, well, he’s Jim Hopper.

[embedded content]

Lexus

This ad does double duty promoting Lexus and the Black Panther film with sleek visuals, lots of action, and stylist cameos from some of the film’s stars. I now want to buy a Black Panther ticket and this Lexus. They’re about the same price, right?

[embedded content]

Coca-Cola

Coke’s latest feel-good ad is a celebration of gender identities, which feels particularly poignant nowadays given that Trump wants to ban the word transgender from the CDC. Keep fighting the good fight, Coke.
