Meghan Markle Is Getting Backlash After Her Team Asked Fans to Not Take Her Photo

While everyone in America was grilling burgers poolside on July 4th, Meghan Markle had a V.I.P. seat to her good friend Serena Williams’s match at Wimbledon. The duchess appeared in good spirits, laughing and smiling with friends—and sporting a very chic blazer—but of course some drama has stemmed from the outing. A new report from the Daily Telegraph claims that Markle’s staff asked people not to take photos of her at Wimbledon because she was there in “a private capacity.”

Specifically, a woman named Sally Jones, 64, was reportedly asked by a royal protection officer to abstain from snapping pics of Markle. Jones wasn’t here for the request, branding it “another example of silly control freakery.”

“I think this royal protection officer was quite embarrassed,” Jones told the Daily Telegraph, per the Express. “He appeared a bit mystified as to why he was being asked to make such a request.”

A palace source who spoke to the Daily Telegraph defended this call, saying, “It’s not unusual for people accompanying Members of the Royal Family at private, or public, events to ask members of the public not to take photographs. It is to enable Members of the Royal Family to engage with people and events.”

Unsurprisingly, a debate is brewing online about whether or not it’s reasonable for royals to ask fans not to take photos of them in public. Piers Morgan went on a bit of a rant over this on Good Morning Britain, saying, “You’re public people…stop your squealing about privacy. If you want to be private, go back to America. [If] she doesn’t want to be a British public figure in the Royal Family, go back to America.”

The Daily Mail‘s Rebecca English took a similar stance, albeit less antagonistic. “The Royal Family occupy a very privileged position,” she tweeted. “That doesn’t mean they aren’t entitled to some privacy. But not at a global sporting event.”

And here are a few more reactions from fans who think the same thing:

Some people came to Markle’s defense, though, with one fan writing, “She’s entitled to some privacy in public and people should respect that.” Another person added, “I guess when you are Meghan Markle and married into the Royal Family you have no right to privacy.”

Markle’s request for privacy at Wimbledon isn’t that outrageous, in my opinion. If you saw a celebrity eating dinner at a crowded restaurant, it’d be a bit intrusive to barge up to them and demand a photo. The same principle applies here. Markle is incredibly friendly and warm when she’s at formal engagements—we’ve seen that time and time again. I don’t think it’s too much to ask of fans to keep a distance when she’s off the clock—whether that’s at home or in a sports arena.

Someone Asked Serena Williams If Meghan Markle Chose Her as Archie's Godparent, and She Had the Best Response

Saturday (July 6) is shaping up to be rather busy across the pond: In Windsor, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry‘s son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor is being baptized. Although guests will number around just 25, Prince Charles, Duchess Camilla Parker-Bowles, Kate Middleton, Prince William, and Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland, are all expected to attend. The queen, however, won’t be there as she’s spending the weekend in Sandringham with Prince Philip.

Many people were wondering if Markle’s dear friend Serena Williams would join Markle and Prince Harry for the event—she’s currently playing at Wimbledon—as well as if she’ll be named one of Archie’s godparents. (The two have hung out recently: Markle and two college friends cheered Williams on to victory earlier in the week.)

Now we have our answer: According to Metro, a reporter at a post-match press conference asked Williams, “Serena, has Meghan asked you to be godmother on Saturday, and are you going?” Williams laughed and replied succinctly, “No, I’m working on Saturday…and she understands work.” She also said she was glad that Markle was able to come see her play. “I knew she was there, and it’s always exciting when she comes out to watch and support the tennis, so I was happy.”

Markle and Harry are trying to keep Archie’s christening as private as possible, hence the small invite list. They’re also not releasing the names of the godparents, which is a different approach than Middleton and William have taken with their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. There will also not be any press coverage of the arrivals, as we saw last year with Louis’s christening. (It should be noted that Archie does not currently have a royal title and is much further down the line of succession than the Cambridge children.)

We will still get to see photos, though: Buckhingham Palace announced that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex plan to release images taken by photographer Chris Allerton after they celebrate privately with friends and family.

Stranger Things' Cara Buono on the Season 3 Scene She Asked To Change

“In that moment you see her partner with their kid and it’s like, ‘Jesus, don’t do it,'” Montgomery says. “And she doesn’t, which I think is really redemptive. Because for Billy, he’s not really going out on that much of a limb. He’s a single guy, a young dude. He’s flirting with her—but for her, there’s so much more at stake.”

Buono says the scene wasn’t originally scripted that way, though. Karen was supposed to walk down the stairs and only see her husband, Ted, sleeping in his chair. But Buono felt that actually could have given her more reason to meet up with someone, so she asked co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer to include Holly in the scene. That way Karen would really have motivation to stay.

Netflix

“There are few things that really spark a strong feeling for me, but it was important,” Buono says of her decision to ask the Duffers to alter the scene. “I immediately said to them, you have to put Holly in there. If not, it might give her pause. But to see Ted with their daughter, it’s like, ‘That’s my family.'” Buono points out that Karen is the head of the household, and the Wheelers are a source of stability in Hawkins. “People have family meals there. It’s safe, it’s together, and she realizes she can’t do this to her family. She realizes it’s not about her. She’s the grownup, and she has to make the grownup decision for her and Billy.”

However, Buono says she would have liked a few more flirtatious scenes with Karen and Billy. “That flirtation would have been fun to do,” she says. “Maybe a scene in a diner…you know, not straight into a hotel room. Like, ‘Let’s have a cheeseburger and flirt a little bit more!’ Just a little more courting.”

That said, Buono says she still see Karen turning Billy down in the end. “It’s a different show if it goes in that direction of Karen having an affair, as fun as it would have been to explore.”

And while it seems Karen and Billy’s storyline has ended—although, it’s not called Stranger Things for nothing—Buono hopes her character will get a chance to evolve in season four. “I always thought Karen was someone who would have gone to law school and be a public defender to give people a voice. Or, after everything that happens in Hawkins—because people are moving away and real estate has gone down—she becomes a realtor. Like, ‘I know things seem a little unstable here, but now’s a great time to buy!'”

A Bride Asked Her Maid of Honor to Postpone Breast Implants So She Wouldn't Outshine Her at the Wedding

You’ve heard of not wearing white to a wedding so as not to upstage the bride, but what about not wearing your, ahem, assets? One maid of honor was forced to consider just that after being asked by the bride to postpone a scheduled breast enhancement surgery.

The angry MOH took to Reddit’s Bridezilla forum, first spotted by Yahoo, to vent about her experience last month.

Though she had been been looking forward to her procedure, which is set for the end of May, the woman wrote that the bride “isn’t very happy about it.”

In fact, she asked if she would consider holding off until after her September wedding. “She said she wants to be the hottest one in her wedding party, and I may overshadow her with my new boobs,” the MOH wrote.

What’s more, the bride doesn’t seem willing to compromise—at all. “I said if it bothers her so much, I will wear something not revealing and will not flash my boobs in front of everyone,” the woman explained. “She looked hurt and heartbroken, said a cold goodbye and left.”

The MOH went on to say that the bride, whom she’s been friends with since kindergarten, had also shunned another attractive friend when it came time to choose her bridal party, opting to include the groom’s sisters, whom she once referred to as “land whales,” instead. (NOT COOL.)

“She picked people she thinks are less sexy than her and somehow I ended up on this list,” the MOH surmised. “She doesn’t want me to get hotter, either. I don’t know how to feel.”

Needless to say, the comments came pouring in, with many advising the woman to go through with her plans for new breasts and ditch her so-called pal.

“Your boobs mean a LOT more for your life than the bride’s single day,” one reasoned, with another adding, “Friends come and go, great boob jobs are forever.”

Even those who admitted to relating to the bride’s desire to be the star of the show agreed that her request was not that of a true bestie. “She’s not being a friend to anyone, and clearly doesn’t respect any of you,” a commenter advised.

The ultimate verdict from the peanut gallery? “Have the surgery, quit the bridal party.”

Prince William Was Asked About Meghan Markle's Due Date—and His Response Was Surprising

With Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s baby due literally any day now, everyone is eagerly awaiting news that the Duchess of Sussex is in labor. But when a royal fan asked Prince William to share any news he had about Baby Sussex‘s due date, he had a pretty surprising update for everyone. You would think Harry’s older brother would be in the loop, but it turns out the Duke of Cambridge actually has “no idea” when his niece or nephew will arrive.

According to Town and Country, William was asked if there was “Any sign of the royal baby?” during his solo trip in New Zealand. To which he jokingly responded, “I haven’t got my phone on me—I have no idea. You guys will find out before I do at this rate.”

William’s update came days after it was revealed that he and wife Kate Middleton secretly visited Harry and Markle on Easter. The Fab Four hung out at Frogmore House following the Easter service in Windsor on Sunday, April 21. (Markle was unable to attend church at St George’s Chapel as she nears the end of her pregnancy.)

Markle’s exact due date has been kept under wraps since she first announced her pregnancy in October 2018. She previously hinted the royal baby was due in late April or early May—and though many have speculated she was going to go into labor this weekend, it was announced that Harry would be attending the London Marathon to hand out medals.

We can safely assume Markle isn’t expected to welcome the couple’s first baby just yet, even though this could change at any given moment. Exciting times are ahead, folks.

We Asked Ellen Page: What Advice Would You Give Your 18-Year-Old Self?

Ellen Page first stole our hearts in the indie classic Juno. The film earned her an Oscar nomination and led to buzzy roles in movies like the X-Men series, Inception, and Whip It. But outside of her acting, Page is also rightfully celebrated for her fierce commitment to LGBTQ+ activism and awareness.

Page first came out on Valentine’s Day in 2014, during a speech at the Human Rights Campaign’s “Time to Thrive” conference in Las Vegas. Since, she’s hosted Gaycation, a documentary series exploring the lives of marginalized LGBTQ+ people in countries where homosexuality is banned, and has worked with the Astraea Lesbian Foundation. Lately, Page has been in the headlines for alleging a church Chris Pratt attends is “infamously anti lgbtq” on Twitter. She also wrote an essay for The Hollywood Reporter about hate violence in response to the current conversation around Jussie Smollett.

Now, Page is starring in Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy, which is currently streaming. She plays Vanya Hargreeves, the only sibling in a clan of superheroes not to have supernatural abilities.

Below, Page answers Glamour‘s “The Big Questions.”

What is your full name, and where does it come from?

My name is Ellen Grace Page. My mom liked the name Ellen, and Grace is for my dad’s aunt.

What’s your idea of true happiness?

Going on a hike in the middle of the woods with my wife and my dog. That’s when I’m like, “Oh my god, it’s too much; it’s so beautiful.”

What’s your idea of hell on Earth?

Probably a lot of things that are happening now, like environmental degradation, oppression and violence towards marginalized people.

If you could be anyone, real or fictional, who would you be?

Naomi Klein, who’s such an extraordinary writer and has written book after book that has inspired since I was a teenager, like No Logo and The Shock Doctrine. I’ve learned so much from her and admire her courage and bravery.

What’s a headline you’d love to read about yourself?

“Ellen Page Gets 3 New Puppies.”

If you were on a dating app, what would your opening line be?

“My dog is super cute. It’s worth putting up with me for this little guy.”

When the zombie apocalypse comes, what skill will you contribute you to the new society?

A snack. If you’re in a lot of trouble, and you’re really starving, I’ll be your snack. That’s all I can do.

What’s your most irrational fear?

Walking over a grate on the sidewalk. I don’t know how people do it.

What chapter of your life would be the most fascinating to read?

My shift from not being known, to being known, and years after that being closeted and dealing with it in this industry.

Would you rather be able to stop time or speed it up?

Speed it up, because when you have food poisoning on an eight-hour flight, you could speed up time.

How do you stand up for what you believe in?

By sharing information and trying to create channels for more representation for more people, particularly members of the LGBTQ+ community. Like show I made with Vice called Gaycation, which is about LGBTQ+ communities around the world.

You’re stuck on a desert island and can bring only three things. What are they?

My wife, my dog, and a fire starter.

You have to give up sex, booze, or laughter. Pick one.

Booze. Oh, that’s easy.
