Here's How Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Reportedly Plan to Spend Archie's First Birthday

It’s hard to believe it’s been almost a year since Meghan Markle and Prince Harry welcomed their first son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, on May 6, 2019.

The couple reportedly already has some big plans in the works to celebrate his first birthday. An Us Weekly source says they are going to be “celebrating at Queen Elizabeth II’s Scottish estate, Balmoral … and have talked to the queen about having a picnic on the grounds.” The source goes on to say the queen is “very excited” for the celebration. It’s been previously reported that the Sussexes were set to spend some time at Balmoral with (Prince) Harry’s grandmother this summer—though with all travel plans right now, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to assume things could be on hold given the uncertain and ever-changing guidelines around the coronavirus pandemic.

Queen Elizabeth II will reportedly gift Archie with a “beautiful rocking horse,” with the Us Weekly source noting he loves the animals and “squeals with excitement” when he sees them. Markle also reportedly plans to have animal-themed cupcakes for at least one of the parties for her nature-loving son. “Archie loves being outside, and you can already tell he’s inherited [Prince] Charles’s passion for nature,” a source told Us Weekly. “He gets so excited at seeing all the trees. Now that he’s just walking, he’s into everything—he’ll often end up covered in mud!”

The outlet says there are also plans for a North American celebration. “Meghan’s mom, Doria [Ragland], and BFFs Jessica Mulroney and Abigail Spencer will be invited to stay with their families for the weekend,” a source said. The Sussexes recently relocated to Markle’s hometown of Los Angeles, where her mother also lives.

As the family hunkers down in L.A. amid the current global crisis, they’ve also had to deal with a tweet from President Donald Trump about who’s paying for their security. On March 29 he wrote, “I am a great friend and admirer of the Queen & the United Kingdom. It was reported that Harry and Meghan, who left the Kingdom, would reside permanently in Canada. Now they have left Canada for the U.S. however, the U.S. will not pay for their security protection. They must pay!”

A spokesperson for the couple quickly responded that they never had any plans to ask the U.S. government for money to cover their security detail and were paying for it privately.

Baby Archie's Biggest Milestones That Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Have Talked About

It seems like just yesterday that the we were all waiting not-so-patiently for the arrival of baby Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, the first child of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. In just the first six months of his life, he’s met the world’s press, been christened in front of two future kings (his grandfather, Prince Charles and his uncle, Prince William), and gone on his first royal tour in Africa, where he casually met Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

While those are the kinds of milestones that Archie mostly has in common with his cousins—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—he’s also just a baby, doing baby things. Markle and Prince Harry revealed some of their son’s latest milestones at a previously-unannounced visit with military families in Windsor yesterday (November 6).

In a video on the Sussex Royal Instagram, Markle has a sweet interaction with a little girl. “Look at all your teeth! Archie just got two teeth, two tiny ones right there,” she says, gesturing to her bottom gum.

Another mom at the event, Amy Thompson, said she chatted with the Duchess of Sussex about their children being on the move. “My daughter Aeris is the same age as Archie and we talked about weaning and the children beginning to crawl,” she said, per Hello! magazine. “She’s just a normal mum and it was like talking to a friend.”

The visit with military families is just one of a number of events the royals have this week, leading up to Remembrance Sunday (November 10). Markle and Prince Harry visited Westminster Abbey’s Field of Remembrance today and placed crosses of remembrance there to mark the service and sacrifice of British veterans. It was Prince Harry’s seventh time at the event, and Markle’s first.

The Sussexes, Prince William, and Kate Middleton are expected to reunite this weekend for the Remembrance Sunday ceremonies.

Meghan Markle Says the Royal Tour Schedule Is Based on Archie's Feeding Times

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry may have decided to bring five-month-old Archie to only one official engagement during their royal tour in southern Africa, but the little royal has apparently been at the center of all the planning.

During an interview during her events yesterday, the Duchess of Sussex was asked about her first work trip as a family of three. “We’re doing well,” she said, which you can see in the video below. “I think the schedule—they have been very kind to me, because everything is based around Archie’s feed times. So it’s a full plate, but we’re making it work. It’s worth it.”

She also revealed that she’s really missed her husband while he’s been on a solo leg of the tour. “It’s my first time being in [South Africa] … and Harry has continued on in a couple [of] other countries,” Markle said. “We are reuniting today, which I can’t wait for, I miss him so much!”

The duchess also spoke about the importance of seeing the work that so many are doing around one of her most important causes: the empowerment of women and girls.

“It’s been very important to me for a long time to focus on women’s and girls’ rights and especially their empowerment,” she said. “So to see this from afar and then to see the work that is being done on the ground, I think what’s really key is to focus on the work that needs to be done, but also how much incredible work is being done and to be able to be hear and support those people who are really actively working to champion the rights of women and girls.”

The Sussex family wraps up their tour later today and will fly back to London tonight. Next on the schedule: They’re currently taking on a British publication for what the royal family says was the illegal use of a letter Markle sent to her father after the royal wedding.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Made a Big Donation in Baby Archie's Name

Baby Archie is already a little philanthropist! This week, his parents Meghan Markle and Prince Harry made a huge gesture of kindness towards Love the Oceans, a marine conservation non-profit — and they did it all in the name of their five-month-old baby.

According to Harper’s Bazaar, the royal parents donated $5,440 to the charity in mid-August under the name “Archie HMW.” Love the Oceans had been running a month-long JustGiving.com fundraiser at the time and still needed a substantial amount to reach their goal. The organization was able to sleuth out who the money was from because the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had recently highlighted their work in an Instagram post. Once they confirmed that the gift was indeed from the royal family, they were reportedly “blown away” by their generosity. We have to say, we’re also blown away by their creativity of putting it under Baby Archie’s name — he’s not even a year old and he’s already giving back to the world!

Love the Oceans works both to conduct research on marine life in the region and also runs a community outreach program to combat a high number of drownings in Guinjata Bay, Mozambique. They also help locals get acquainted with the ocean and are working to open a swimming pool to teach kids to swim — something which Archie’s donation helped make possible. Their mission lines up with conservation efforts with which both Prince Harry and Markle have been involved: They’ve both worked to preserve animal habitats in Botswana, and their upcoming tour in Africa with Baby Archie will include several outreach efforts to discuss wildlife and forest protection.

“Without that donation and support this would not be happening,” Adam Knight, a swim coach and partner with Love the Oceans tells Harper’s Bazaar. “Now that we’re able to go ahead with this, we will all be thinking of Archie when we open the pool next August. What started out as a passion project is now transforming a community and beyond.”

In an Instagram post six weeks ago, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle shouted out several organizations doing similar work, including Love the Oceans. They wrote in the caption, “We were so happy to learn about them and are now able to share them with you!” they wrote. “Thank you for being part of this collective conversation with us; we hope everyone has enjoyed discovering many of these accounts and engaging with each other on how we can all be Forces For Change.”

The organization was so touched by the royal’s social media recognition that they announced on Instagram that they had named one of their sharks after the littlest royal. “As a thank you we have just named one of our juvenile whale sharks ‘Archie’! Welcome to the Love The Oceans family Archie,” they shared alongside an image of the animal.

And Archie’s donation has inspired many others to do the same. Since news of the littlest royal’s efforts make headlines, the JustGiving.com fundraiser page has been flooded with royal fans pledging money and thanking Love the Oceans for their work.

The Earrings Kate Middleton Wore to Archie's Christening Are Causing So Much Drama

Kate Middleton‘s ears are reportedly at the center of some very petty drama right now. Yes, you read that correctly: her ears.

The situation goes back a few days—to baby Archie’s christening on Saturday, July 6. It was a stunning celebration, and nearly all of the Royal Family was in attendance: Archie’s parents, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry (obviously); Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland; Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla; and Kate Middleton and Prince William, to name a few. From the official portraits, everyone appeared to be in good spirits. But of course, the internet can’t just have that.

See, some people are still stuck on the idea that there’s a royal “feud” brewing between Prince William, Middleton, Markle, and Prince Harry. And they used baby Archie’s christening to reignite it. First, fans accused Prince William and Middleton of looking “sour” and “pained” in the official portraits. (If the couple seems tired or annoyed at all, it’s probably because they had to stand around taking stuffy photos all day. That’s a frustrating task for even the closest family members.)

Now, people are saying the earrings Middleton wore to the christening were somehow a dig at Markle. She picked the same pair Princess Diana wore to Prince Harry’s christening in 1984, which was interpreted as a tribute to the late royal. However, some are saying that Middleton deliberately chose them to “upstage” Markle. What?

The Sweet Way Kate Middleton Paid Homage to Princess Diana at Baby Archie's Christening

Baby Archie was christened at Windsor Castle on Saturday, and although Meghan Markle and Prince Harry opted for a private event, they had some close relatives with them. Kate Middleton was among the select friends and family members who attended the intimate event, and she chose to do so while also paying a sweet tribute to Princess Diana: Middleton wore pair of earrings that Lady Di had actually worn to Prince Harry’s own christening in 1984.

A family portrait that Meghan and Harry released on Saturday shows Middleton wearing a pink pussybow dress by Stella McCartney—a longtime favorite designer of hers—and a matching headband with magenta heels. It gave us some serious Blair Waldorf vibes and the whole look was perfect for such a personal family event. But eagle-eyed fans caught one important detail: Middleton also wore Princess Diana’s Collingwood pearl and diamond earrings. Since Princess Diana had shown them off during Prince Harry’s baptism, it made for a sweet tribute when Middleton brought them out for Baby Archie’s big day.

Of course, it’s not the first time Middleton has paid homage Princess Diana in some way: She has a long record of honoring Princess Diana’s best fashion moments throughout the years. Middleton once wore a navy Alessandra Rich polka dot dress with an ivory collar that reminds many people of a polka dot number that Princess Diana was photographed in back in 1985. And the red Jenny Packham dress that Middleton wore just after Prince Louis was born was also extremely similar to the red, collared dress Princess Diana chose to wear when she did a photocall following Prince Harry’s birth in 1984. Middleton has also worn a few tiaras and other pieces of jewelry that once belonged to her late mother-in-law, showing that she, along with the other royals, are keeping Lady Di’s memory alive.
