Erin Andrews Chose a Neon Green Sweater For Her First Big Game.

I’m being truthful when I say I’ve never watched a televised sporting event from start to finish—baseball is boring, football too complicated, and I tend to lose interest in the frenetic back-and-forth of basketball, soccer, and hockey. Even so, I’ve known who Erin Andrews was since the early 2000s when she started working as a sideline reporter for ESPN, probably because there were so few women in her field that she became newsmaking by virtue of just existing. Since then, I’d argue that she’s risen to become one of the most well-regarded, influential sports reporters in the game, and the fact that she landed a hosting gig on Dancing With the Stars in 2014 speaks to her mass appeal with American audiences.

For her episode of “What I Wore When,” Erin wanted to talk about a sweater. Specifically, the three-quarter-sleeve V-neck she chose for her first major on-air job: Game 7 of the 2004 Stanley Cup playoffs between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Calgary Flames. A monumental opportunity for any burgeoning sports reporter, and one that seemed to call for neon green.

“I’m from Tampa Bay, and it was a huge game,” Erin told me. “I was like, ‘I really, really need an awesome shirt to wear.'” And so begins the story of how Erin and her parents went to the mall to find her something perfect. “We went to Ann Taylor, and it was in the front of the store, the front table … It was bright fluorescent green. I remember there was a yellow fluorescent one [and] a pink one. For some reason, that green one was calling my name.”

How Sheinelle Jones Chose What to Wear When She Became a 'Today' Show Anchor

Broadcast journalist Sheinelle Jones moved her family to New York from Philly for her dream job on NBC’s Today show. Five years later she’s the cohost of the beloved morning show’s third hour, the co-anchor of the Saturday edition of Weekend Today, and a correspondent for all platforms of NBC News. When she came in to record her episode of Glamour‘s new podcast What I Wore When,—during which I talk to women about an outfit they chose during a pivotal moment in their lives—she chose to talk about the dress she wore to her first day on the job.

If you think picking out a dress for work can be stressful, imagine having to do it with the knowledge that millions of people will be seeing—and maybe judging—it. The dress she chose: A floral, fitted Cynthia Rowley stretchy sheath that she got at Nordstrom. The dress, she told me, still holds up.

“You know what’s crazy, is that when I close my eyes to think about how I would look, and I opened my eyes to what I had on. I looked better than I imagined I could look.”

Jones’ first day as a ‘Today’ anchor five years ago—and the Cynthia Rowley dress she still loves. (Courtesy of Sheinelle Jones)

I was particularly excited to talk to Sheinelle. Growing up, my family always had the Today show on as we got ready in the morning and so, as an adult, I’ve remained loyal, even during the show’s ups and downs. One of the program’s bright spots, for me, is the number of women broadcasters they’ve introduced during the last few years.

When she came in for our interview, Sheinelle, 41, was in the process of booking parent-teacher conferences straight from her phone—I have a 10-month-old, so didn’t know that was a thing—and talked openly about the challenges of working six days a week while raising three children. Even though I was the one asking the questions, I felt comfortable talking to Sheneille—especially when she put her interviewer hat on and turned some questions back on me.

She was cool and real and we bonded over our love of shopping at men’s stores in the ‘90s (shout out, Structure), she explained how “news girls” (her words) choose their outfits and why the Today show trusts its talent to dress themselves, aging, and the fact that she still doesn’t own an “I’m successful!” handbag despite being, in fact, quite successful. She also broke into song four times which I found highly enjoyable.

Toward the end of our conversation, Sheinelle shared with me a particularly special part of her morning routine that involves her young daughter, and also casually said I should come on the Today show for a fashion segment. Sheneille, you have my number.

Here's Why Jenna Dewan and Channing Tatum Chose to Divorce

In her new book, Gracefully You: How to Live Your Best Life Every Day, Jenna Dewan reveals the reasons she and Channing Tatum decided to split up in April 2018.

“I’d come to realize the dynamic I was in wasn’t serving me nor was it serving my daughter,” the actor-dancer writes, according to People. “First and foremost I had to accept the realization this isn’t working and had moved into hurting.”

In the book Dewan says she and Tatum decided to call it quits the night before she started filming World of Dance season two. They were able to keep news of the split hush-hush during most of production.

“The public saw Channing and I in this idealized romanticized light,” Dewan also writes in her book. “This made things difficult for me because I like being as honest and real as I can.”

Earlier this month Dewan told People that she was “gutted” by her marriage to Tatum ending. “It was so difficult for me,” she said. “It was the loss of an idealistic future for myself and my life. What does that now look like for me? Where do I begin? I met him when I was 24. I didn’t know life without Chan.

“It was a hard journey of growth and change,” she continued. “Ultimately, now I can honestly say that I’m living in a very joyful new place in my life, and I’m happy about it.”

That joyful new place in her life includes a relationship with Broadway actor Steve Kazee and a baby on the way. Dewan confirmed she and Kazee were expecting on September 24 via Instagram. “Becoming a mother is quite simply the absolute best most incredible thing that has ever happened to me,” she wrote. “@stevekazee you are a gift from above and i couldn’t be more excited to be expanding our family together…! Thank you guys for all the love!!” See the post for yourself, above.

Jenna Dewan’s book, Gracefully You: How to Live Your Best Life Every Day, is now available.

Someone Asked Serena Williams If Meghan Markle Chose Her as Archie's Godparent, and She Had the Best Response

Saturday (July 6) is shaping up to be rather busy across the pond: In Windsor, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry‘s son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor is being baptized. Although guests will number around just 25, Prince Charles, Duchess Camilla Parker-Bowles, Kate Middleton, Prince William, and Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland, are all expected to attend. The queen, however, won’t be there as she’s spending the weekend in Sandringham with Prince Philip.

Many people were wondering if Markle’s dear friend Serena Williams would join Markle and Prince Harry for the event—she’s currently playing at Wimbledon—as well as if she’ll be named one of Archie’s godparents. (The two have hung out recently: Markle and two college friends cheered Williams on to victory earlier in the week.)

Now we have our answer: According to Metro, a reporter at a post-match press conference asked Williams, “Serena, has Meghan asked you to be godmother on Saturday, and are you going?” Williams laughed and replied succinctly, “No, I’m working on Saturday…and she understands work.” She also said she was glad that Markle was able to come see her play. “I knew she was there, and it’s always exciting when she comes out to watch and support the tennis, so I was happy.”

Markle and Harry are trying to keep Archie’s christening as private as possible, hence the small invite list. They’re also not releasing the names of the godparents, which is a different approach than Middleton and William have taken with their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. There will also not be any press coverage of the arrivals, as we saw last year with Louis’s christening. (It should be noted that Archie does not currently have a royal title and is much further down the line of succession than the Cambridge children.)

We will still get to see photos, though: Buckhingham Palace announced that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex plan to release images taken by photographer Chris Allerton after they celebrate privately with friends and family.

I Chose Unassisted Home Birth Because Pregnant Black Women Are Dying at Terrifying Rates

On all fours in an inflatable pool in my living room, I could feel my baby’s head crowning. I reached down to touch him, stunned at the quiet instinctiveness my body seemed to possess. Before I could even think about what to do next, my body summoned one last great push, safely delivering my son into my husband’s waiting hands. We sat there in awe, just the three of us—no doctor, no midwife, no doula—soaking in what suddenly felt like the perfect birth.

My husband and I always knew we wanted a home birth. Aromatherapy, candlelight, and the comfort and safety of my own home always sounded far superior to a sterile hospital delivery room filled with strangers in scrubs. But what we didn’t initially plan was that we’d have a completely unassisted home birth, without a trained birthing professional like a doctor or midwife present to help coach us through the delivery of our first child.

From almost the moment I found out I was pregnant, I worried. Every mom-to-be worries—Will I have pregnancy complications? Will my child be healthy? Will I poop during labor?—but with my being a black woman in America, the realization quickly set in: Being pregnant meant putting my well-being, even my life, on the line in a way that white moms, statistically, don’t have to.

Shockingly, the United States is the most dangerous developed country in the world to have a baby. Women in the U.S. are three times more likely to die during childbirth than women in Canada. To put it in perspective, that’s a higher maternal mortality rate than in Kuwait and Kazakhstan. Immediately after birth, complications like postpartum hemorrhage can threaten a new mother’s life, and after leaving the hospital, many more women face health complications that can be life-threatening, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Some estimates say 60 percent of these deaths are preventable.

That’s enough to keep any pregnant woman up at night, but for black women, the stats are even more chilling. Black women in the United States are three to four times more likely to experience pregnancy-related death than white women. The prevailing theory as to why this gross inequity exists? Black women are often ignored and dismissed when it comes to health issues, including ones that can turn fatal.

Even Serena Williams isn’t immune to the deadly bias. The day after giving birth, she was having trouble breathing. With a history of pulmonary embolism, she notified her care team right away, telling them she needed a CT scan. But Williams’ request was initially downplayed; nurses thought her pain medication might be making her confused, she told Vogue. Her persistence is what ultimately saved her life. When she finally did get the scan, it revealed blood clots had indeed settled in her lungs.

Not all black women are as lucky. Kira Johnson, a 39-year-old woman in Los Angeles, died just hours after giving birth to her second child. After a routine C-section, Johnson began complaining of excruciating abdominal pain and started losing color, her husband told People. He noticed blood in her catheter, but it was hours before her health care professionals took any action, he said. Another surgery revealed Johnson had massive internal bleeding. She died from the complications.

This racial bias weighed heavily on my mind—with stories like Johnson’s and Williams’ happening more often than I could stomach, how could I feel safe having a hospital birth? My husband’s own grandmother died while pregnant in the hospital. She was just 35.

Meghan Markle Reveals How She Chose Her 'Perfect' Wedding Tiara

Meghan Markle‘s had more fashion moments than we can count since becoming the Duchess of Sussex, but it’s her royal wedding dress and tiara that are the most memorable yet. Both items are now on display at Windsor Castle with the Queen’s blessing—along with a surprise interview where the duchess explains exactly what made her “Markle sparkle” moment so perfect.

The Duchess and Duke of Sussex recorded a surprise joint interview to accompany the exhibit, titled A Royal Wedding: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex. As visitors gaze at Markle’s stunning 16-and-a-half-foot wedding veil, Givenchy gown, and 100-watt tiara, they can hear directly from Markle how she landed on the beautiful bandeau tiara she wore for her wedding day.

“When it came to the tiara on the day, I was very fortunate to be able to chose this gorgeous art deco style bandeau tiara,” Markle explains on the exhibit’s recording. “Harry and I had gone to Buckingham Palace to meet with her Majesty the Queen to select one of the options that were there which was an incredibly surreal day as you can imagine.”

So what made Queen Mary’s 1932 diamond bandeau tiara the one for Meghan? “I think it was just perfect because it was so clean and simple—and also to that point, an extension of what Clare and I had been trying to do with the dress which was have something that could be so incredibly timeless but still feel modern,” she says.

The fairytale moment wouldn’t have been complete without Prince Harry by her side. He found the moment just as special as the bride. “Every girl’s dream to be able to try on a tiara, and, funnily enough, the one that suited the best, the one that looked the best on you without question, I shouldn’t have really even been there, but such an incredible loan by my grandmother, it was very sweet,” he says.

The exhibit includes more fascinating details about planning their fairytale wedding, from choosing the ceremony music to picking that famous bouquet of flowers. When it came to Markle’s custom Givenchy wedding dress, she says her connection with designer Clare Waight Keller was instantaneous. “I met her and I just knew it, I walked back to the house and I said to Harry, ‘She’s going to do my dress, I just know it,’ she says.

Could this wedding have been more ‘perfect’? We think not.
