Melissa McCarthy Says Someone Actually Asked About Her ‘Tremendous Size’ in an Interview


In a new interview with InStyle magazine, Melissa McCarthy opens up about the body-shaming she experienced early on in her career. After her breakout role in 2011’s Bridesmaids, the actress says she became a target for offensive questions at press junkets. During one instance, McCarthy recalls a journalist flat-out calling her “grotesque.”

“Years ago, I was at a press conference for either The Heat or Tammy and somebody from a very big organization kept asking me, ‘Why do you always feel the need to be so grotesque?’” McCarthy tells InStyle. “It was a huge interview with maybe 100 people in the room and he was sneering.”

She remained calm, though. “What are we talking about? I can’t answer your question because I don’t understand it,” McCarthy said in response to the reporter. He then said, “You look sloppy, you’re not wearing any makeup, your hair is not done, you’re yelling at people.”

McCarthy took this opportunity to point out the double standard between men and women on film. “I was like, ‘OK, so have you ever asked this of a guy? I’m playing a character. You need to get out more if you don’t think there are real women like that,’” she said. “[The journalist] goes, ‘Oh, fine, I’m aggressive, call it whatever you want. If you don’t want to answer the questions, you shouldn’t come to the panel.’”

But the Can You Ever Forgive Me? actress didn’t back down. “I was like, ‘I really want to answer your questions. I’m sorry I didn’t wear makeup in a part. I’m sorry I didn’t look pleasant for you. But I also don’t think you should be here writing about movies,’” she said.

McCarthy received a similar line of rude questioning while promoting Bridesmaids seven years ago. “[The reporter] kept asking, ‘Are you shocked that you actually work in this business at your tremendous size?'” she recalls. “I just remember all the blood drained out of me. I thought, ‘With my tremendous size, I could tackle you so quickly.'”

This conversation happened on camera, but producers from the outlet assured McCarthy they’d never air the journalist’s remarks. “It happens all the time, to the point where it’s fascinating because they don’t do it to men,” she said. “Not to be a jerk or single him out, but when John Goodman was heavier, did anybody ever talk about his girth?”

This Bride Held an Adults-Only Wedding—and Asked a Guest With Kids to Leave


A bride has started an intense debate on Reddit after having an adults-only wedding ceremony—and asking one guest who brought her children to leave.

The Knot first reported that an anonymous bride posted a recap of her wedding-day drama on Reddit’s “Am I the Asshole?” thread. In her post, the bride said that she and her husband-to-be wanted a child-free event—and had requested an adults-only wedding on their invitations—but ran into some trouble when a guest brought her two kids, a toddler and a baby.

The bride says she allowed the children and their parents to stay through the ceremony but asked her wedding planner to confront the family at the reception.“At the actual wedding ceremony, I let it slide. I was preoccupied for obvious reasons,” the bride wrote. “I also thought that maybe they planned not to attend the reception or to have someone pick the kids up before it started.”

That didn’t happen, so the bride says she decided to intervene: “My event planner went to talk to the couple. I could tell they were arguing with my event planner though so I went over to help him. I think they thought I came to rescue them because they started going on about how rude my event planner was. I explained that I had actually sent him over to discuss the children. I reiterated that the event was child-free and said that I had stated so clearly on my invitations.

“The wife gave a sort of apology and then assured me that they were capable of minding their own children to make sure they didn’t get in the way of anything. I said that wasn’t really the point,” she continued. “That’s when my now-husband comes over and he and the other woman’s husband begin going back and forth and things got a little heated.

“Finally I snapped and said that they just needed to go, which, thankfully they did without much more noise. Still, the whole scene was incredibly embarrassing which is exactly what I wanted to avoid.”

The bride reiterated that her invitations requested that the wedding be adults only. “To be clear, all of my invitations stated that there were to be no children at this wedding,” the bride said in her post. “But she and her husband showed up with their infant and toddler (who I think is like 3-4).”

“I really hate that my wedding day had to be somewhat marred by this incident. According to my mother, everyone was talking about it and I guess enjoying a little dramatic entertainment,” she said.

The bride’s post has since gone viral, racking up more than 1,500 comments since it was posted to Reddit three days ago.

“I’ve had wedding invites and save the dates that say ‘we love kids, but this is an adults-only affair.’ Easy and explicit without being rude,” one commenter said. “The assholes we’re [sic] the ones who brought their kids to an explicitly child-free event. And then caused a scene when they were asked to leave,” another wrote.

Some, however, thought she could have handled the situation differently—and the bride updated her original post to add that “a few family members felt it was inappropriate to kick out the couple.”

Her edit also addressed the comments that other Reddit users left on her post. “Thank you all so much for the feedback. What I’ve gotten from this is that most people think that the couple was rude,” she wrote. “The feedback here has helped me not to feel guilty about that and just realize that not everyone has the same ideas about tact and manners.”

Ada Hegerberg Makes History, Then Is Asked If She Knows How to Twerk


While you were sleeping, a little moment riled up the sports world. It was a history-making event: Ada Hegerberg, 23, the star striker from Olympique Lyonnais team in Norway, was the first woman to ever be honored with the prestigious Ballon d’Or award, recognizing her as the best soccer player in the world. She gave a heartfelt speech about the players who would follow in her footsteps, saying, “I wanted to end with some words for young girls around the world: believe in yourselves.”

And then the host, French DJ Martin Solveig, stepped up to ask her a question. About her 157 career goals, her inspirational impact on girls everywhere, her incredible decision to boycott the sport until female players in Norway get more respect? No. He asked, in French, “Do you know how to twerk?” Hegerberg gave a terse no, and tried to exit the stage.

The video already has hundreds of thousands of views, and appropriately, the Internet went off.

Bottom line is this is yet another episode that reflects exactly where feminism is at right now. Women are breaking glass ceilings. Setting new records. Yet still getting asked questions about what they’re wearing (like when Amal Clooney was in court for a major human rights case), their diet (like Scarlett Johansson fitting into her Black Widow costume; and no, Robert Downey Jr. wasn’t asked the same, or how they “balance” work and, well, the rest of life.

Solveig apologized quickly after the show, saying, “of course I didn’t want to offend anyone.” I believe him—most people don’t intend to insult women or their accomplishments. This is just so ingrained in our culture that it eventually comes out, like a Freudian slip. We have to actively think and process and combat it.

Hegerberg did what most women do in these situations. She smiled, said she wasn’t offended, shook hands, and moved on. Because she is focused on the work. Note to any future interviewers to do the same. Ask women about the training, the challenges, the joys. You know, the same questions you ask the guys.

Meghan Markle Was Reportedly Asked to One Thing to Avoid Upsetting the Queen at Christmas


In bizarre royals news I didn’t see coming, Meghan Markle reportedly has to downplay her charades skills if she wants to stay in Queen Elizabeth II’s good graces at Christmas. Is that the weirdest sentence you’ve ever read? Yup, me too—but this is an actual report published by U.K.’s Sunday Express. Take it with a grain of salt, though, because the outlet only uses “sources” and “insiders” to back up its report.

According to the Sunday Express, the royal family partakes in a friendly game of charades every Christmas night, and Prince Harry has advised Markle to tone down her acting chops so Queen Elizabeth can win. “The duchess has to resist that American urge to win at everything. The whole family likes to play charades on Christmas night, and she must never beat the Queen, who is a fine actress herself,” a source tells the publication.

This is just…a lot to take in. For one, how do we even know that Markle is a master charades player? Just because she played a lawyer with impeccable hair for seven years on Suits doesn’t mean she’s an improv champ (although we’re not ruling it out). Also, if Markle were to win this game…what would the Queen do? Throw down her crown and storm out of the room? Demand a rematch? Scold Markle like the time scolded Prince William? We have questions!

That being said, the scene my imagination dreams up of an ultra-competitive Markle actively suppressing some urge to demolish Queen Elizabeth at charades is amazing. Ahh, to be a royal!

We Asked 4 New Moms to Test Origins' Calming Cannabis Face Mask

White Influencers Appearing Black Is the Instagram Trend No One Asked For


For centuries, black women’s physical features have been seen as undesirable because of our inability to conform with “mainstream,” Eurocentric beauty standards. And yet, time and time again, when a famous white woman adopts those features endemic to women of color, it’s considered “cool,” “pretty,” or “trendy.” The debate is nothing new. Just look at the discussion around Kylie Jenner’s lips. She might have the option to get rid of them—or wear “boxer braids for fun—but for black women, these attributes are our genes and culture, not merely an accessory.

And, well, here we are again. The latest example to sweep the internet? White influencers and models appear to be passing as light-skin black or biracial women—also known as “blackfishing”—on Instagram.

The conversation first bubbled up on Twitter, after one user shared a conversation between her and another one of her followers about a Swedish Instagram influencer with over 200k followers. Despite the woman’s appearance—deep, tan, racially ambiguous skin; full lips; and wavy hair—a deeper dive through Emma Hallberg‘s feed showed that before all the spray tans, her skin was actually quite pale. That tweet caused an uproar and a full-on debate about what it means to “look black.”

One user commented, “Some of y’all gotta stop trynna make this look OK..racial fetishism objectifies POC. I bet this girl thinks she looks more “aesthetic” when she makes herself look like a light skinned black girl.”

Another user commented, “White woman if you don’t realize the formula for instant social media fame and notoriety is to copy black womens’ style, appropriate black women culture and pretend to be a mix/light skin black woman then you’re lost in the sauce.” [all sic.]

“I genuinely believed this girl was Afro-Latina,” Deja told The Cut. “She had been mimicking black features and getting famous for it. She has been darkening her skin several tones deeper than her natural shade, braiding her hair to make it look similar to mixed people’s curl pattern, and even been featured on Instagram accounts made for black hairstyles and spotlighting black women. The sad part is she really fooled everyone into believing she was a mixed girl.”

According to Buzzfeed, the influencer self-identifies as white—which she’s confirmed to others on social media (Glamour has reached out for comment and will update when we’ve heard back.)

For example, after an old Snapchat photo resurfaced of her explaining how she got her hair wavy, Hallberg shared that she sleeps with braids in her hair to achieve this wavy look. And after old images surfaced when her skin was noticeably lighter, she was approached by another Instagram user asking if she was white and why her skin used to look so much lighter. She responded, “Yes, I’m white and I never claimed to be anything else.” She also went on to explain that those “before” pictures were taken after summer, where she gets the same tan every year.

“It made me sad that some of my natural features are hurting and upsetting people. It also made me upset and scared that I can’t look the way I look naturally, without receiving false accusations, hate, and threats,” she told Buzzfeed.“I do not have any specific intentions other than [to] show my passion for makeup and fashion.”

Unfortunately, Hallberg isn’t the only white woman who has been recently called out for the same act. Another Twitter thread started to shed light on several white influencers appearing to co-opt black features. Most of them aren’t from the U.S., where appropriation often gets lost in historical context, but nonetheless, with easy access to the Internet and the global conversations that take place around blackface, it’s no excuse.

As a woman of color, it’s disappointing to see that situations like these keep happening, and it’s equally as disheartening that black women are still being held to a different standard when it comes to our physical traits. White women work so hard to achieve the same looks we were born with—and they’re celebrated for them while we’re still shunned. I wish I had an answer to make all it stop. But until then, I’ll keep shouting into the void. Influencers, can you just not?
