Twitter Is Dragging Conservative Pundit Tomi Lahren for Wearing a Flag Costume for Halloween

Conservative political pundit Tomi Lahren is known for being outspoken about right-wing issues: We’ve seen her criticize government-funded subsidies for birth control (with little indication she knows how much it costs) and come out against allowing military members who are transgender to serve their country. Lately, she’s used her platform to criticize athletes who choose to take a knee when the national anthem is sung at their sporting events. In a monologue on Fox in September, Lahren said that those who chose to kneel to protest the oppression of people of color were doing it for the attention. As part of her argument, she cited the flag as a living symbol of what it means to be American and implied that those who kneel were unpatriotic.

With all this talk about the sacredness of the American flag, it’s not entirely surprising that Lahren faced a lot of backlash on Twitter when she stepped out on Halloween dressed in full flag gear. The criticism didn’t necessarily come from conservatives—whose comments were largely supportive—but liberals, who flagged (ha) her apparent hypocrisy.

In case it’s been a while since you were in the Scouts, the U.S. Code dealing with “respect for the flag” says that “No part of the flag should ever be used as a costume or athletic uniform.” (It also mentions that the flag shouldn’t be used for “printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard.” Granted, this is in a section dealing with advertising purposes, but Halloween costumes are nothing if not for temporary use.)

Here is her Make America Great Again/flag costume, complete with a charming caption:

Conservative Twitter was very excited about seeing her wearing all sorts of flag regalia.

The president’s son even weighed in, typically tactfully and eloquently:

Et cetera, TBH.

But others on Twitter came for it:

Jezebel really honed in with what honestly felt like the most important fashion take on the issue: “Tomi Lahren’s Fannypack Is a National Abomination.”

Lahren clapped back with some legal code that she apparently got by Googling “wearing the flag”:

When we did a quick check, we got a whole range of answers from different sources. Although her response makes some sense—yeah, it’s probably not great to turn an actual flag into a Halloween costume—the aforementioned section of the code does mention that it shouldn’t be printed on anything meant for temporary use, which would presumably include fabric used for a costume. I don’t know, though; I’m just a former high-school debater, not an actual legal expert.

So, like many sections of the law, it probably depends on how broadly or narrowly you read into it. If you feel strongly about it, you should definitely check with a lawyer well versed on flag law. Or, you know, find a less controversial Halloween costume.

There's a Reason You'll Never See Kate Middleton Wearing Red Nail Polish

PHOTO: JOHN THYS/AFP/Getty Images

When it comes to setting trends while still keeping in mind classic royal traditions, Kate Middleton walks the line without crossing it. Her style is classic yet still very modern—hello, she loves the cold-shoulder look as much as we do. The duchess also loves to mix up her beauty look—ICYMI, she apparently changes her hair for each pregnancy—but we dare you to name a time you’ve seen Kate wearing red nail polish or coral on her fingers. Coming up blank? It turns out there’s a very specific reason why.

Marie Claire UK reported recently that only natural-looking nails are permitted at official royal events—which tend to be where and when photos of her get taken. That kind of explains why Queen Elizabeth II has been wearing the same shade of polish, Essie’s Ballet Slippers, since 1989. According to Essie, it’s “the only color Her Majesty would wear.” It is a cult classic, after all. And hey, if you know what you like…

Kate wore a similar, sheer pink shade on her wedding day. Her manicurist Marina Sandoval told the Daily Mail in 2011 that she mixed Bourjois Rose Lounge and Essie Allure to create the custom shade.

Prince Harry’s girlfriend and mostly-likely-soon-to-be-official fiancé, Meghan Markle, has also been spotted wearing natural nail shades when she’s out with Harry: at the Invictus Games, she had her nails painted with a sheer pinkish-white shade.

So why the no-bold-nail-polish rule in 2017? We love those shades, personally. But royals are expected to dress and behave according to strict, traditional codes—they can’t sign autographs, for example. And if it that’s the royal rule, we’ll respect it. The diamonds in Princess Diana’s tiara that Kate’s been known to wear make quite the statement anyway.

Rose Leslie Was Just Photographed Wearing Her Engagement Ring From Kit Harington

PHOTO: Jason LaVeris/FilmMagic/Getty Images

Game of Thrones fans across the world rejoiced on September 26 when co-stars Kit Harington and Rose Leslie confirmed their IRL engagement. “The engagement is announced between Kit, younger son of David and Deborah Harington of Worcestershire, and Rose, middle daughter of Sebastian and Candy Leslie of Aberdeenshire,” the ad the couple took out in The Sunday Times read. (Yes, Harington and Leslie announced their engagement via newspaper, which is the classiest and most iconic thing ever.)

Also iconic? Harington’s proposal to Leslie, which he opened up about to Jonathan Ross last week. Apparently, he’d set everything up perfectly—mood lighting, candles, the works—but it all fell apart when he asked the golden question a little prematurely. “I did have some plans to do it, I was going to string up some lights in some trees and do all the romantic stuff, but we were in the country and we were under this beautiful night sky and had a log fire burning and red wine and I blew my load early,” he said, according to The Sun. He quickly clarified his interesting choice of words by saying, “I was meant to do it the day after with the lights. What I meant to say was, I popped my question a bit early. Not blew my load…Sorry, that’s a really bad expression.”

Yes, Harington and Leslie’s engagement has truly been one charming story after the next. And the excitement continues tonight with new photos of Leslie wearing—wait for it—her engagement ring in public.

E! reports paparazzi caught Leslie at Heathrow Airport on Sunday (October 8) with the new, gorgeous ring on her finger. Check it out for yourself, below. It literally deserves its own Iron Throne.

There’s no word yet on when Leslie and Harington plan to tie the knot, but Harington told Ross that it will be a Game of Thrones cast affair. “I was like, ‘You need to factor in a Game of Thrones wedding, by the way,'” he said, per The Sun. “They [the cast] have all got to be there, so the whole thing has got to shut down.”

Melania Trump Mocked by Internet for Wearing Sunglasses at Night

When Melania Trump makes headlines, it’s typically for one of two reasons: one, for her deftly choreographed evasions of Donald Trump’s hand-holding attempts, and two, for her incongruous fashion choices. Late Wednesday night, the First Lady returned from a trip to Puerto Rico and Las Vegas with her husband. As the pair were most definitely holding hands, the eagle-eyed critics on Twitter seized on another detail: her sunglasses.

As Fox News puts it, “The eyewear quickly became the focal point for Twitter users who pointed out that the sun was not out.”

Inquiring minds demanded to know why she was wearing sunglasses at night—a somewhat bombastic move usually reserved for Hollywood stars—and the theories began pouring in.

“I wonder if Melania Trump wears big sunglasses in public so no one can see her rolling her eyes at the B.S. her hubby says,” wrote @wesleysmom28. Ice cold, Wesley’s mom.

“Melania was hoping her sunglasses were so big that people wouldn’t recognize her…” proposed @HeathRaleigh, in reference to the time Donald Trump appeared not to recognize his wife, who was standing right next to him, because she was wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap.

Others made oblique references to her other instances of inappropriate wardrobe choices.

“I expect melania to come out with her own line of disaster wear complete with hat and sunglasses,” said @liberalchik, bringing to mind the time the FLOTUS wore stilettos and sunglasses to Houston after Hurricane Harvey.

Yet others pleaded with her to cease this behavior immediately, some because they felt the sunglasses rendered her incapable of conveying compassion or warmth.

This isn’t the first time Melania Trump has gotten flak for her unusual fashion choices. Recently, the Italian-made dress she wore during Trump’s speech about American labor was eviscerated on Twitter, and later, an expensive outfit she wore during a United Nations address was called out for being tone-deaf. And we doubt it will be the last time.

Melania Trump Gets Mocked For Wearing Stilettos to Houston After Hurricane Harvey

On Tuesday, Donald and Melania Trump took off for Texas to witness the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey and the relief efforts taking place firsthand. Photos of the President and First Lady show Melania looking unusually casual in a green bomber jacket, a black shirt and black cropped pants, but instead of grabbing a pair of sneakers or, you know, rain boots, Melania choose to cap off her look with sky-high black stilettos.

Obviously, Twitter users couldn’t resist commenting on the choice of footwear, with some taking it as evidence that the First Lady cares more about her image than helping the victims of the hurricane. Others pointed out that they’re just plain ridiculous to wear during what the National Weather Service called “unprecedented” flooding.

A Trump spokesperson told The Washington Examiner in Melania’s defense that she planned to change into a different pair of shoes. Still, people are confused about why she was wearing her signature heels in the first place.

This isn’t the first time Melania’s come under fire for her fashion choices. In May, she wore a 51,500 Dolce & Gabbana jacket to the G7 Summit in Sicily, garnering criticism for flaunting her wealth while many Americans struggle to survive on far less money every year—especially as her husband’s administration furthers policies that would make life harder for these people.
