Wearing a Face Mask? These Anti-Fog Sprays and Soaps Will Keep Your Glasses Clear

Life right now feels like a constant series of adjustments. From big things like work and school happening from home and the shutdown of restaurants, bars, and large-scale events to constantly keeping up with the federal and CDC guidelines about who’s allowed to go where and what precautions you need to take when and if you do. It’s a lot, we know.

Cloth face masks and coverings are now a must according to the newest CDC guidelines—at least when you’re in areas where you might not be able to stay six feet away from other people. If you happen to also be a person who wears glasses (or just someone who wants to wear sunglasses outside), you may find yourself with another nagging issue: the lenses keep fogging up. Basically what happens is, the mask directs your hot breath up toward your eyes and the water vapor forms condensation on the cooler lenses (lovely). If you’ve ever walked inside on a cold winter day while bespectacled, you’re probably familiar with this situation.

So what can you do about it?

Wash your lenses with soapy water.

This sounds incredibly simple, but you’d be surprised how many people never wash their glasses. There’s actually scientific evidence from a 2011 study published in the Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons that showed if you wash your lenses with soapy water, shake off the excess moisture, and then let them air-dry, they’ll resist fogging. “Washing the spectacles with soapy water leaves behind a thin surfactant film that reduces this surface tension and causes the water molecules to spread out evenly into a transparent layer,” the study says. Hooray for science!

Attach a tissue to the inside of your mask.

You’re basically trying to create a strip to absorb some of the moisture from your breath before it becomes condensation. Fold a tissue into a thick strip and then attach it to the inside of your mask, positioned so it will hit the bridge of your nose. It’s not foolproof, but it helps.

Use anti-fog spray.

Yes, there are already existing products to help reduce foggy glasses. They work in much the same way as the soapy water trick mentioned above by minimizing surface tension on your lenses. This is probably the most convenient option—if you can find any still in stock. We picked out a few available to shop right now if you’re in the market.

Move your glasses farther down your nose.

Sure, this is a less scientific method—but it can work in a pinch. Slide your glasses down to the tip of your nose, which takes them out of the direct path of your hot breath. Hence, less fogging, though you may have to crane your neck upwards to see. It’s a trade-off.

Create a “nose” inside your mask.

Basically, if you can form your mask to fit more closely around the shape of your face, there’s less chance for the moist air to reach your glasses. If your mask has a wire, pinch it tightly to your nose. If not (or if that’s not enough), then this option involves a little crafting, if you’re so inclined. This tutorial shows you step-by-step how to insert a flexible nose into your mask. Et voila, less fog.

The Best Anti-Frizz Hair Sprays for Curls

If I could spend every day of my life basking in warm, dry, 80-degree weather, I would do it in an instant. But as a born-and-raised east coaster, the only summer I know translates to godawful hair—we’re talking huge, fluffy, frizzy, coarse, knotted curls. And while I’ve recently begun the accepting voluminous hair into my life, there’s nothing like summer’s humidity to whip control out of my hands and make me feel like an awkward middle schooler all over again. If that’s you, too, I have good news. A new crop of anti-frizz hair sprays are hitting shelves this summer that promise to keep the effects of humidity at bay.

Much like everything in beauty, we’ve been burnt by this claim before. Traditional hair sprays revolve around the promise of keeping your style in place, yet that goes against the flow and movement that make curls so much fun. My dream is curls that are well-defined and bouncy, sexy and soft, that still have some semblance of control. In 86-percent humidity, that’s a highly difficult ask. But Drybar, Oribe, and AG Hair’s new releases all promised to be up to the task, thanks to formulas that draw on wax in a spray form. Wax itself has been around for decades, but where once it was reserved for gluey pomades and wet-look styles that require Kristen Stewart’s confidence to pull off, sprays offer the humidity-blocking hold that stylists love pomades for but in an easy-to-use way.

I tested all the top anti-frizz contenders in the category, and came away with three of the best new wax sprays. My new obsessions, ahead.

The Best Low Hold Anti-Humidity Spray:
Drybar The Kicker Finishing Spray Wax, $26, sephora.com

I felt great about how my hair looked after dousing it in Drybar’s latest release, The Kicker. It’s a light, malleable, sweet-smelling wax spray, with hold that I felt on my hair for about a minute before it absorbed like a thin layer of armor.

The early summer weather in New York was bad—muggy, hot, and moist. It was one of those days when you step off the subway, sweat your way to the office, and then immediately feel your sweat chill in the AC. I took my after photo (on right) after venturing outside for lunch, and all things considered, I was impressed. On my eager-to-poof curls, the thin layer of frizz was nothing compared to the undefined curl clouds I’d have seen otherwise.

The Best Medium Hold Anti-Humidity Spray:
Oribe Flash Form Finishing Spray Wax, $42, bloomingdales.com

Like literally all Oribe products, the Flash Form spray wax smells incredible (the brand calls the scent “Cote d’Azur,” and I do want to go there). You can definitely feel the touted “fortifying polymer blend” and the wheat starch in the formula—to the touch, the wax did feel slightly stickier immediately after I sprayed it on. If you’re trying to build texture or looking for a wave spray, this would be the one to try, but I was relieved when the sensation eventually disappeared. Pro: It kept my curls defined and stopped the air’s moisture from penetrating.

The Best Heavy Hold Anti-Humidity Spray:
AG Hair Dry Wax, $21, ulta.com

The “dry” moniker came through here, with AG’s option giving the heaviest hold of the three, plus a conditioning edge thanks to its coconut and seaberry oil. My hair was big to start with this day, so in a side-by-side comparison it’s deeply impressive that I ended the day with volume that was nearly equivalent. Frizz did come for some of my curl definition, but given the sweat that was literally glistening on my face as I took the “after” in my sweatbox of a New York apartment, I can’t fault the spray for that—sweat’s an occupational hazard. I also need to note, the AG smells incredible. Each of the contenders smelled great, but something in the AG draws me most. It smells like your coolest camp counselor’s shampoo. I hope she’s proud of me.

The Best Hair Lightener Sprays for 2018

The fantasy of leave-in hair lightener sells itself. There you are on the beach with a chilled beverage in hand, lying mostly in the shade but partially in the sun. As you relax, the sun’s rays transform your hair with easy, natural highlights. You head home with gorgeous surfer-girl streaks that look like they cost $200, and at work, people ask if you’ve been on vacation. Who wouldn’t sign up for the dream? Anyone who experimented with Sun-In’s original formula in the eighties and nineties, that’s who. Some people had good experiences with the drugstore peroxide formula, legend has it, but mostly we were all just walking around with orange, brassy splotches.

Flash-forward to the present, and thanks to advancements in technology, a new bounty of hair lightening products is landing on store shelves, claiming to lighten your hair up a few shades without any effort. Some do rely on various formulations of hydrogen peroxide to get there, while other brands offer versions with chamomile and citrus. To see which ones are worth trusting with our summers, we sent Glamour staffers home with their picks, and sworn promises that they wouldn’t come back to us orange. Given the rainy weather on the East Coast lately, results were mixed—but read on to see which ones delivered.

PHOTO: Michelle Sulcov

“The last time I took my color into my own hands, I ended up with fire-engine-red hair with chunky blond streaks instead of auburn highlights. That was 14 years ago. So to say I approached this Sun-In 2.0 trend with extreme caution is an understatement. But I trust Jen Atkin, the celebrity hairstylist behind the brand, and I’m always looking for easier ways stretch out color appointments, so I took a leap of faith.

The first test-run went OK-ish. I wanted to make sure I put enough on, so I overdrenched my hair and ended up with a sticky, greasy, wet look at work—fine for the beach, not so much for the office. The color, though, looked nice. It was subtle, but it brightened up the already highlighted parts of my hair that had gone brassy. The next few tries I took it easy on the spray and was left with only a sweet coconut smell—no stickiness or orange splotches. A coworker with brown hair also tried it, and while the results were also slight, it did pop out a few blonder pieces in her hair. Forget any nightmares you had in the nineties. The promises of Sun-In are finally delivering.” —Lindsay Schallon, senior digital beauty editor

PHOTO: Michelle Sulcov

“The first week or so that I had this hair lightener, the sun was simply nowhere to be found. So I tested its advertised ‘heat-activation’ capabilities and for several days sprayed it on damp hair before blow-drying my hair. I didn’t see any noticeable difference from just that, but I did see some lighter highlights in my hair start to pop once I finally got the chance to test it during a sunny day the beach. While the effects were subtle, they definitely magnified the natural lightening effect I get when I’m out in the sun all day.

As for the product itself, despite its aerosol can appearance, the spray is straight liquid, which is easy to apply but will make dry hair look like you stood under a shower for two seconds. The spray has a really nice smell, but the product is tangible in your hair—like a light hairspray—so I definitely wanted to wash it out at the end of the day. It’s not going to give you fresh highlights in one day, but I will definitely break it out when I’m lying out or heading to the beach.” —Maggie Burch, digital producer

PHOTO: Michelle Sulcov

“I couldn’t have been more frustrated with my hair when I began this test drive. I was in desperate need of a trim, and my highlights had oxidized into this awful, orangey blond that brought out the ruddiness in my skin. All of which is to say, unless this product came with a pair of scissors and some foils, I wasn’t going to be 100 percent satisfied with my hair.

Still, I love Klorane products, and this one—a light, liquid consistency with a fresh scent vaguely reminiscent of clean laundry—had a kind of earth-mother appeal, like the 2.0 version of squeezing lemon juice on your hair. My color didn’t change too much, but I definitely enjoyed the application process. And sometimes that’s 90 percent of the appeal with beauty products. I’d repurchase now that I’ve finally been to my colorist.” —Amanda FitzSimons, fashion contributor

PHOTO: Michelle Sulcov

“I’ll admit that I am very fickle when it comes to hair products—if I don’t see something that excites me within the first couple of uses, I typically discontinue. And I don’t wash my hair daily, so using any product more than a few times really means a week’s worth of waiting. In this case I really liked the smell and it had a nice texturizing effect, but I didn’t see much in the way of lightening. Considering I didn’t use the product as frequently as recommended to see real results, I can say only that this product is not for anyone interested in faking a ‘weekend in the sun’ to work friends on Monday. Prepare to take a bit more time with the process—which is probably a good thing?” —Laurel Pinson, digital director

I Tried the Best Curl Refresher Sprays on My Day-After-Sex Hair

They’re up there, but my curls‘ greatest enemy isn’t humidity, breakage, or frizz. It’s not even an inexperienced hairstylist with a pair of blunt scissors (but a chill did just run down my spine). It’s sex. Either you tell your partner to watch themselves and miss out on the whole passionate, hands-in-your-hair, Outlander experience, or your hair doesn’t take priority, and you wake up the next morning with knots, tangles, and flattened curls that can only be fixed by a shower. But now, no longer.

A new crop of curl refresher sprays are hitting shelves that promise to take a broken up, frizzy curl, and get it back to a place that’s ready to see the light of day. We’ve seen options that have claimed to do this before. There have been hair oils that leave you greasy, water-based mists that leave you bedraggled, dry shampoos that soak up oil but don’t do anything for your curls, and dry conditioners that make your hair soft, but also do nothing to fix curl patterns. The closest thing to success, in my experience, has been spray oils, and while those are good, spray too much and you end up a greaseball.

But after testing all the options pouring into Glamour‘s beauty closet, I came up with three that hit the sweet spot between detangling and adding hydration, hold, and shine. On shelves, look for an aerosol formula, with oils included, but usually not at the top of the ingredient list (I found those ones are likely to weigh down your hair). I road-tested each with a hookup…or my best attempt at replicating the effects. As familiar as I am with The Apps, I am but one woman. So at some point, I had to fake it by rolling around on the couch to mimic the experience, touching my hair like an idiot man who has no idea how expensive hair products are. The reviewing process, you know how it is.

Read on for the three best curl refreshing sprays that held up to the challenge.

The Best Re-Styling Spray for Frizz:
Living Proof No Frizz Instant De-Frizzer, $20

PHOTO: Rachel Nussbaum

Shocker: trekking back to my place through subway heat and spring humidity doesn’t help my post-hookup curls, which usually have a few situations going on following a sleepover. There’s frizz, but also tangles large and small, and depending on how I slept, my curls’ volume is all over the place. I enjoy my hair most when the curl weight is distributed equally from top to bottom, i.e., when I’m a safe distance from triangle hair and the trademark poof at the bottom. Poof is hard to tackle, but tangles are more lethal—because once you untangle them, the curl definition is gone, and the bulk only grows.

On the frizz front, Living Proof has a new solution. The brand just released its No Frizz Instant De-Frizzer, which is a dry conditioning spray made from a blend of five oils and the brand’s “healthy hair molecule,” OFPMA. After ripping apart the most serious knots, I sprayed down my hair with a cloud of the De-Frizzer. My God, the shine—the difference was subtle but mighty. Especially where my hair was the size of my face on my right and a floating frizz cloud behind my left ear, it helped the curls fall back in line, albeit larger and in a looser curl than normal. It’s like a dry oil spray, without the fear of overdosing. So while it won’t put curls back together again, it’s a good option if you want to tamp your flyaways down.

The Best Re-Styling Spray for Loose, Wavy Curls:
Oribe Mystify Restyling Spray, $44

PHOTO: Rachel Nussbaum

Oribe surprised me here. After years of testing the so-called “best” luxury products, I’ve often found that the more expensive (and usually French-seeming) the brand, the least likely it is do to anything for my curls. So I went in with low expectations. At first, it felt like water and smelled like a Versailles kind of heaven. I was ready to scoff, but the Mystify turned it around and honestly blew my mind by achieving the impossible. It loosened my curl pattern and turned my typically bouncy curls into ropey, romantic twists. Back in the day (high school), this was my only goal. I literally bought a since-discontinued product for this very effect, back when I hated how big my hair was and wasn’t confident doing the rock ‘n’ roll hairflip, sorry-my-hair-is-in-your-space style you see before you on the left.

The Mystify brought me back; I did the half-back style I used to wear all the time when my aesthetic was Renaissance princess (also in high school). It’s a distinctly different look that’s three notches wavier than I’m used to, but I was into it, and it lasted all day.

The Best Re-Styling Spray for Reviving Curls:
Sexy Hair Curly Sexy Hair Curl Recover Curl Reviving Spray, $18

Tons of curl rehydrating sprays come with ingredient lists that feature water and alcohol front and center, and to those I say, how dare you? I’m not trying to pay double digit prices for glorified water. Worst of all is the betrayal when you spray them on, things look great, and then you check yourself an hour later and the water led to even more frizzing. I’m happy to say that’s not the case with Sexy Hair’s Curl Recover Curl Reviving Spray. The initial spritz feels a little damp and slightly sticky, but within a minute it fades into honest-to-God hold—something that’s hard to come by in a light, non-gel formula.

I wouldn’t reach for it when my curls are ruined and there’s no time to shower, but it’s good for blending them back together if you wake up and there’s some mild separation. That kind of thing—the coming-apart curls at the bottom left—are the warning sign that my hair’s about to enter stage Seriously Puffy, and spraying throughout the day effectively kept it at bay. It came with less shine than the Living Proof, but more hold, so proceed as you see fit. This one was best for reconstruction, especially if you get in there and scrunch the curls as you spray them.

9 Best Hair Texture Sprays for Perfect Beach Waves

In the world of volumizing hair products, the options are vast. But if it’s that messy, beachy, bedhead look you’re after, there’s only one way to go—and that’s dry texturizing spray. Think of it as a hybrid of hairspray and sea-salt spray. You get all the benefits of both (volume, hold, and piecey texture) without the annoying parts—no crunch, no weigh-down, no sticky residue.

Since throwing out my favorite hairspray years ago in favor of texture sprays, I’ve become somewhat of an evangelist for them. I’ve nagged friends who complain about humidity killing their volume to try it, and converted coworkers who were convinced “I woke up like this” hair was impossible. Once, for my friend’s wedding, I introduced her hairstylist to Oribe’s Dry Texturizer (long considered the gold standard), and she ended up using the rest of my can on the bridal party. I wasn’t even mad about it, because the secret to great hair is meant to be shared. Get in on it with these Glamour-editor-approved recs.

The Best Detangler Sprays and Conditioners for Curly Hair

In an ideal world, showers would be for one thing and one thing only: Staring off into space and letting your subconscious take over. But alas, even showers aren’t free of their own to-do list, even if it’s just the shampoo-condition-body wash-shave checklist. And if you have curly hair, you know that there’s a hidden, often very difficult step in between “conditioner” and moving on with your life, and it’s detangling your hair. Granted, knots aren’t limited to curls, but thanks to their makeup, brushing snarls out of dry hair isn’t an option unless you’re going for the puffy, brushed-out look. If you’re not, a ton of shower time is dedicated to disarming tangles. Slip is the magic word in the curl lexicon, and the more of it you have, the easier that knots fall out (so the less time you spend painstakingly in the weeds of your tangles, trying to unfurl the damage without loosing strands). Get your shower back with the new class of detanglers: Fast-acting, deep-conditioning, and better-smelling than ever before.
