'Book Club' Writers Were Told Nobody Wants to See a Movie With Women Over 60—They Made It Anyway

You might be surprised that Book Club—a romantic comedy, in theaters now, about four women in their late 60s whose lives and sexualities are awakened after reading Fifty Shades of Grey*— was written by two people in their mid-30s. But it was a story co-writer and producer Erin Simms and director, producer, and co-writer Bill Holderman wanted to tell. In fact, it took them about six years—and a lot of hustle—to get it made. Now, Simms looks back on the “risk” they took, how they got stars Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen on board, and more.*

There are two types of risks. For me, the “not doing something” kind is never the one worth taking.

No one asked me and Bill Holderman to write Book Club. We wrote the script in our free time and on spec, meaning, for free. We both had full time jobs at a production company and were developing and producing movies for Robert Redford. If that sounds like a pretty great gig, it was. When we left that safe, comfortable existence to blaze our own trail it was, in a word, risky. (I’m pretty sure “stupid” and “irresponsible” were also frequent descriptors at the time, but I digress.) The thing is, I just couldn’t shake the idea of making a movie starring four female Hollywood legends in leading roles. The idea was too exciting. This was the kind of movie I wanted to see, but it wasn’t going to be easy.

The journey to get the movie made was long and fraught with complications. Our script was bought and held hostage for two years. When we finally regained the rights, many financiers wanted us to cast younger so that their returns would be less “risky.” (There’s that word again.) They told us audiences wouldn’t show up for a film about a mature group over sixty, a group that happened to be made up of four women. When we told them our dream cast was Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen, they scoffed: “You think actresses like that will take a risk on a first-time director?” Other financiers wanted us to replace the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy featured in the movie because, according to them, E.L. James would never give us clearance to use her books. I can’t tell you how many times we heard: “Why risk it?”   Book Club was a labor of love, but even more so it was a labor of resilience. It was made independently, on a tight budget, and in just 33 days. When our little movie was acquired by Paramount Pictures with their full support for distribution, the amazement I felt was close to awe. Making this movie gave me a profound sense of accomplishment—not because we completed it, but because we started it in the first place. Because we tried.

It also reinforced something I suspected early on: Other people don’t necessarily know any better than you do. Sometimes it’s hard to believe, but it’s true. So when someone tells me “you can’t” or “you won’t,” I smile inside because I know it’s just another hurdle to clear, because that’s what those opinions are. They are a weeding out process—a test. They are other people’s fear of trying something new or different, something that simply might not work out. Something risky.

While I would hardly dare to compare myself with the legends that are Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen, in a way I feel a kinship towards them. These are women who never gave up, never took no for an answer, and who are willing to take the risk. They are also women who have grown up in front of the world and have forgiven themselves for getting older and who are still willing to get out there and try new things no matter the outcome.  It’s the survivor, badass, never-say-die quality in each and every one of them that takes the fear out of getting older for me and makes this movie an actual joy to see (and frankly kind of a miracle).

Those are the themes that inspired this movie: Taking chances and challenging yourself, no matter your age; looking forward instead of looking back, and relying on the beauty of female friendship to carry you along the way. For me, the risk was always the reward.

As the opening day for Book Club arrives, I find myself less focused on its performance and more grateful for the journey. Although it would be nice if this demographic proved to the industry that yes, people will show up if you give them something to show up for!

As the great T.S. Eliot wrote, “For us, there is only the trying. The rest is not our business.” Here’s the thing about trying: It never gets old. And if trying never gets old, then maybe trying is the key to staying young at any age. Furthermore, if the four actresses who star in Book Club are any indication, then without a doubt, the future really is bright.

Khloé Kardashian's Family Told Her to Lose Weight Because She Was 'Hurting' Their Brand

In August 2015, Khloé Kardashian told Complex magazine that she’d lost 35 pounds. The physical transformation, she said later on an episode of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, was completely accidental: She started hitting the gym after splitting from Lamar Odom as a way to de-stress, and the weight started slowly coming off. When Kardashian started noticing the changes, though, she made a conscious effort to get healthier.

Now, health and fitness are vital components to Kardashian’s business. She has a (sometimes problematic) show on E! titled Revenge Body, which helps people lose weight to “get back” at certain adversaries in their lives. Plus, she’s always posting gym and healthy eating tips to her social media accounts. Her lifestyle change, for many, is inspiring because it seems completely organic.

But that’s not the full story. It wasn’t just stress from a breakup that caused Kardashian to work out more and make healthier eating choices. Her family was pressuring her to do this, too—and for reasons that will make you cringe.

Us Weekly reports that on an episode of Revenge Body this season, Kardashian reveals her family told her to lose weight because she was damaging their public image. The reality star tells a contestant her family essentially said, “Khloé, you got to lose weight cause you’re really hurting the brand.” Oof.

“I understand that was coming from my management side of my family, but it does hurt,” Kardashian also says on Revenge Body. “I’m a huge believer of it’s not what you say, it’s how you say it.”

How disappointing. Khloé Kardashian is funny, unfiltered, bold, and intelligent. She’s an integral member of the Kardashian family and elevates any “brand” she’s a part of—no matter her size. People love Kardashian for her sparkling personality and wit, plain and simple. It’s disheartening her family members apparently couldn’t see that.

Channing Tatum Told His Daughter He Ate All Her Halloween Candy

Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan Tatum’s 4-year-old daughter, Everly, is straight-up savage—in the cutest way possible, of course. When Everly’s parents tried to show her Step Up earlier this year, she asked them if they could watch a “real movie” instead. She has no qualms about interrupting her mother’s dance rehearsal and making her presence known. Simply put, Everly does what she wants when she wants; it’s her world, and we’re just living in it.

So it’s no surprise she didn’t respond well when Channing told her he ate all her Halloween candy. Of course, no child on Earth would respond well to this news; that’s why Jimmy Kimmel Live has an entire segment about it that airs every year. Tatum guest-hosted the talk show last night, which is where he shared the video of himself dropping the no-candy bombshell on Everly. After hearing the news, Everly immediately turned her back on Channing and crawled over to Jenna. “I’m sorry; I just got so hungry,” Channing says.

The teasing goes on for a few more seconds before Channing reveals he didn’t actually eat her candy. Everly still isn’t pleased, though, and essentially says the toddler version of, “WTF? That’s not funny, dad!” And she’s right: Honestly, this is low-key a horrible thing to do to children. Why is this a Kimmel segment?!

But I digress. Check it out for yourself, below:

Earlier this year, Tatum wrote a really beautiful essay about Everly for Cosmopolitan magazine, which more than makes up for this gag. “I don’t want her looking to the outside world for answers,” he wrote. “My highest hope for her is just that she has the fearlessness to always be her authentic self, no matter what she thinks men want her to be.”

Taylor Swift Told Fans Her New Song 'Gorgeous' Is About Joe Alwyn

An FBI-level investigation ensues whenever Taylor Swift releases a new song. When “Look What You Made Me Do” came out, fans spent hours decoding the lyrics and writing theories. They did the same for the music video and also for “…Ready for It?,” her second promo single, which dropped the next week. There’s a lot to unpack with these releases, too: Swift is a crafty wordsmith. She has a knack for writing lyrics that seem obvious at first but actually have secret, mysterious meaning.

And the same thing can be said for “Gorgeous,” the track she released last night. However, fans won’t have to give up their weekends figuring out the subject of this one: Swift already spilled the beans.

Well, she (allegedly) spilled the beans to the 300 fans who attended her Reputation secret listening sessions. One of those lucky Swifties took to Tumblr and wrote, “Basically Taylor made us all promise that if anyone made any accusations of who this song is about, we tell them it is 100 percent about her angel boyfriend of one year. This isn’t a secret. She wanted us to tell people.” (Swift’s been dating actor Joe Alwyn for a year.) See their post for yourself, below:

It’s great Swift’s being so transparent about “Gorgeous,” but, honestly, the lyrics aren’t that tough to crack. “You should take it as a compliment / That I got drunk and made fun of the way you talk,” she sings at one point. (Alwyn is British.) “And I got a boyfriend, he’s older than us / He’s in the club doing, I don’t know what,” she sings again. Alwyn is 26, and the two men who Swift could be referring to as her boyfriend—Calvin Harris and Tom Hiddleston—are both older than him, though our money’s on Harris, considering he’s one of the highest-paid DJs in the world. Regardless, it’s pretty obvious “Gorgeous” is about Alwyn—but, hey, at least now we know for sure.

Ivanka Trump Told Dr. Oz She's in a 'No-Income Family'

In an interview that aired Thursday, Ivanka Trump sat down with Dr. Oz to promote her political agenda and show America that her family is just like us. There was just one glaring issue: Her family is nothing, at all, like us.

To Trump’s credit, she spoke with Dr. Oz about the national need for more paid family leave and her own personal struggles with postpartum depression—issues that countless American women can relate to. But her talking points might have thrown viewers for a loop when Dr. Oz, referencing the fact that both she and husband Jared Kushner work for the president, said, “So you’re basically a dual income family.”

Trump replied with a laugh, saying, “Actually, we don’t take an income.” She laughed again and said, “So we’ve waived our salaries, so we are a no-income family right now.”

The audience applauded the first daughter’s statement—but there’s just one problem. Trump and Kushner may have nobly waived their White House salaries, but they’re still making plenty of money.

As The New York Times explained, despite their roles in the White House, both Kushner and Trump remain beneficiaries of their businesses, which hardly makes them a “no-income family.”

Trump maintains a financial stake in the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C., The New Times noted. That hotel has drawn ire as the family and spokespeople—including one-time press secretary Sean Spicer—have reportedly “encouraged” diplomats and high-ranking international visitors to stay there or stop by for a visit to build better ties with the first family. Though it’s still unclear how much Trump will make from that particular hotel, Kushner’s financial disclosure forms, which include his wife’s ample assets, revealed that she earned somewhere in the market of $1 million and $5 million from the D.C. hotel between January 2016 and March 2017.

But wait, there’s more. Remember Trump’s recent book? As CNN noted, the first daughter was given a $787,500 advance from Penguin Random House for Women Who Work.

As for Trump’s husband, while Kushner has stepped down from an active role in his various companies (266 of them to be exact), he will still remain the beneficiary of the several trusts set up in his name.

As Larry Noble, a former general counsel and chief ethics officer for the Federal Election Commission told The New York Times, Kushner simply stepping down—but still benefiting—from his companies “is not sufficient.”

“While removing himself from the management of the businesses is an important step, he is still financially benefiting from how the businesses do,” Noble said. “This presents the potential for a conflict of interest. Given his level in the White House and broad portfolio, it’s hard to see how he will recuse himself from everything that may impact his financial interest.”

All told, the couple’s combined assets could total upward of $762 million, according to Business Insider. Actually not having an income is a harsh reality for many Americans—tens of millions of them, in fact—and isn’t something to giggle about on national television.

Miss UK Zoiey Smale Was Told to Lose as Much Weight as Possible—So She Gave Back her Crown

Miss UK Zoiey Smale has no time for your unrealistic beauty standards, thank you very much.

In June, Smale was crowned Miss UK in the United Kingdom round of the Miss United Continents pageant, qualifying her to compete in the international pageant in Ecuador. But then she heard from contest organizers that if she wanted a shot at winning, she’d have to “lose as much weight as possible,” she told The Daily Mail. The message apparently came down from the Ecuadorian directors of the international competition.

“It’s horrible and it made me feel so rubbish about myself for a long, long time,” Smale said. “I said to my director, who was really supportive, that I don’t think someone should say that to girls, it’s awful and it’s horrible and it’s wrong. I don’t think to be a good role model you have to be stick thin and I explained my reasoning that way.”

In addition to subjecting herself to an unhealthy dietary regime—which could be especially harmful to her, as an eating disorder survivor—Smale felt that if she continued, she’d be tacitly participating in a toxic culture. So she gave back her crown and forfeited her position in the global competition.

“I don’t think it is … right to have my face representing a pageant ethos I do not believe in,” she wrote in a Facebook post. “If a pageant doesn’t want to utilize my capabilities because I am a size 10 then it’s their loss.”

Smale told The Daily Mail that the focus on her weight devalued the charity work she’d done through the competition, which encouraged a twisted value system.

“This one took completely away from … promoting giving,” she said. “It’s more, you’ve got to be as stick thin as possible because that’s what the guys want to see. So I just handed my title back and I just shut that door.”

In a Thursday Facebook post, Smale wrote that she was “honored to be called a role model in today’s society.”

“Seeing the thousands of comments and messages across all of my media platforms, reading people’s personal experiences, just goes to show I am not alone,” she wrote. “I cannot thank people enough for their support and precious time.”
