Miss England 2019 Is Giving Up Her Crown to Fight COVID-19 as a Doctor

Miss England 2019 is hanging up her crown (for now) to focus on the coronavirus pandemic.

Bhasha Mukherjee, 24, was a junior doctor specializing in respiratory medicine before competing in the Miss World pageant on behalf of England in December 2019. Although continuing her work at the Pilgrim Hospital in Boston, Lincolnshire, after taking home her Miss England sash, she had planned to put her medical career on hold to travel the world for various humanitarian efforts after her latest competition. However, four weeks into her ambassadorship in India on behalf of Coventry Mercia Lions Club, where she donated stationery to schools and gave money to a home for abandoned girls, news broke that COVID-19 was spreading rapidly back home in the United Kingdom.

After Mukherjee started receiving messages from former colleagues about the worsening situation at her hospital, she knew she had to pick up where she had left off. She told CNN she felt she needed to be more hands-on during the pandemic. “When you are doing all this humanitarian work abroad, you’re still expected to put the crown on, get ready…look pretty,” she said. “I wanted to come back home. I wanted to come and go straight to work.”

“I felt a sense of, This is what I’d got this degree for and what better time to be part of this particular sector than now?” she said. “It was incredible the way the whole world was celebrating all key workers, and I wanted to be one of those, and I knew I could help.”

On April 5, Queen Elizabeth II made a rare address to the British public, thanking health care and essential workers for their tireless effort responding to COVID-19.

“I want to thank everyone on the NHS front line, as well as care workers and those carrying out essential roles who selflessly continue their day-to-day duties outside the home in support of us all,” she said. “I’m sure the nation will join me in ensuring you that what you do is appreciated and every hour of your hard work brings us closer to a return to more normal times.”

The queen finished her speech with a hopeful message. “We can take comfort that while we may have more still to endure, better days will return,” she said. “We will be with our friends again. We will be with our families again. We will meet again.”

On Wednesday, April 6, Mukherjee returned to England but still has to self-isolate for about two weeks before she can return to work as a doctor at the Pilgrim Hospital, where it’s all hands on deck, according to the pageant queen.

“There’s no better time for me to be Miss England and helping England at a time of need,” she said.

Netflix Wants to Work With Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on The Crown

It’s only been a few days since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle confirmed they’d be leaving their current roles as working royals. However, the job offers are already rolling in for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, including one potential offer to take part in the Netflix hit drama, The Crown.

For those of you somehow not in the know about the award-winning (and highly bingeable) show, The Crown is a fictionalized account of Queen Elizabeth II’s life, along with the lives of her family members. The show recently dropped its third season, which chronicles the teenage years of Queen Elizabeth’s son, Prince Charles. Season four is currently in production and will reportedly feature Charles’ introduction and early marriage to Princess Diana. So it’s only a matter of time before the world is introduced to a baby, child, teen, and adult Prince Harry.

Naturally, following Harry and Meghan’s bombshell announcement to leave the monarchy in an official capacity—and the news that the pair has renounced any public funding in the future—royals fans have theorized that Markle may return to acting. And, some even speculated she and Harry could somehow join forces with The Crown. And it appears Netflix is keen on the idea as well.

“Who wouldn’t be interested?” Netflix’s chief content officer Ted Sarando said at the Producer’s Guild Awards in Los Angeles on Saturday, per a report from The Daily Mail. “Yes, sure.”

While this is still a hypothetical it’s not that unprecedented. After all, Meghan has already reportedly signed a deal with Disney to do voiceover work in exchange for a charitable contribution to Elephants Without Borders.

Perhaps a cameo in season 5 could be worked out if Netflix is feeling equally charitable.

Queen Elizabeth May Have Made a Subtle Nod to *The Crown* in Her Annual Christmas Speech

Ever since The Crown premiered on Netflix in 2016, fans have wondered whether its subject, Queen Elizabeth, watches the drama—and what she thinks of it. Some reports have said that the Queen Mother approves of the series; while others have said she’s taken issue with the more fictionalized scenes. And now, new reports seem to suggest not only that the royal watches, but that she gave the hit show a subtle nod in this year’s annual Christmas speech.

On Tuesday (December 24), a photo from Queen Elizabeth’s annual Christmas Day broadcast shows the monarch seated a desk in front of a Christmas tree, surrounded by photographs of the royal family throughout the years. The Daily Mail spotted that among the desk decor was a picture of Queen Elizabeth’s handshake with the Apollo 11 crew—an event that was recreated on season 3 of The Crown.

During the seventh episode of season 3, Prince Philip watches the Apollo 11 team complete their mission and questions his own accomplishments as a result. The royal family also hosts an astronaut-themed birthday party for Prince Edward and Prince Andrew. Finally, the show depicts the famous meeting between Queen Elizabeth and the Apollo 11 team at Buckingham Palace, shown below.

Embedding a wink to that would be a savvy pop culture move from Queen Elizabeth, indicating yet again that she’s aware of the series. But it could also be a marker of the year: 2019 marked the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969.

Netflix Easter eggs or not, the Queen’s Christmas broadcast will have other moments for royal onlookers to chew on. Excerpts from Queen Elizabeth’s speech published by CNN say that she will address the tumultuous year in politics head-on. “Small steps taken in faith and in hope can overcome long-held differences and deep-seated divisions to bring harmony and understanding,” she said. “The path, of course, is not always smooth, and may at times this year have felt quite bumpy, but small steps can make a world of difference.”

The Crown Fans Can Stay at This Filming Location—Complete With Corgis and a Royal Butler

If you’ve ever dreamed of living like a member of the British royal family, now’s your chance.

Fans of both the real-life royals and the fictionalized ones on The Crown can now rent the massive home known as The Earl of Fitzroy—exterior shots of the residence were featured in the second season of the Netflix show. But, those who rent it won’t just be gaining access to the home; they’ll also gain access to an entire royal lifestyle too. But, fair warning, that lifestyle will cost you.

“We’ve been getting a bit overexcited about the release of The Crown’s third season,” Plum Guide, the rental company in charge of the listing, wrote in a blog post. “So, to celebrate we’ve created the ultimate experience of frivolity and excess worth over £50,000 in one of London’s most splendid homes.”

That “frivolity” includes access to a personal butler, a delicious banquet dinner, as well as a royal-worthy horse and carriage ride through Fitzrovia Square. Those who also shell out almost $65,000 for the luxury accommodation will also have afternoon tea surrounded by several regal corgis. And they won’t have to worry about picking up the wrong spoon as guests will also receive training (just like Meghan Markle reportedly did) from one of the world’s leading etiquette instructors, William Hanson. Guests will also reportedly be greeted with a box full of goodies from all the Queen’s favorite brands.

But if you want in on this action you better act fast since The Royal Experience at Earl of Fitzroy will only available in December. (Guests also must commit to a seven-night stay.) Hopefully, the house comes with its own Netflix account so guests can stream season three of The Crown while getting waited on hand and foot too.

The Crown Season 3 Has So Many Secret Meanings in the Hairstyles

There are so many levels on which you can enjoy the latest season of The Crown. There are the historical elements which can lead you into a internet deep dive about events like the tragedy at Aberfan or Prince Charles’ investiture as the Prince of Wales. Then you’ve got the soap opera elements about the messy, dramatic, dysfunctional drama going on behind the palace walls, what with possible coups, love quadrangles, and royal marriages falling apart. But one of my favorite aspects of the show will forever be the hair, makeup, and styling.

We got to chat with Cate Hall, the show’s hair and makeup designer about what went into the incredible hairstyles of Queen Elizabeth, Princess Margaret, Princess Anne, Camilla Shand, and even Prince Philip and Prince Charles. Currently in production on season four (when we will finally meet Diana), she spilled all of her onset styling secrets and the incredible amount of research and meticulous detail that goes into recreating the looks of some of the most famous people in the world.

“I spent months doing picture and video archive research to build a library of chronological reference books to include our principal royals and also our extensive supporting cast of recognizable faces,” she says. “Using these ‘bibles’ of images, one for each royal and one for each block of episodes, I was able to track how their looks evolved over the 13 years covered in season three and start to make a plan for how we might represent these changes on screen. I wondered if going to the bother of having photo books printed was a waste of time but was so gratified to see the whole team and also the cast checking back in and referencing them throughout the shoot.”

It sounds like a totally fascinating process. “Of course, we pay attention to the finer details, and they inform our wider choices, but where typically we start by giving the actor everything we can that might work, for example teeth or plumpers (an appliance set inside the mouth to change the shape of their face), we nearly always then gradually strip these layers away until we reach a point that is believable and real,” Hall explains. “We actually deliberately avoid too literal a representation of the character, since being too verbatim also rings false. Because we are dealing with human beings not mannequins, we have to make choices that sit and move naturally with the actor. Every choice we make has its base in trying to create a comprehensive story world that the viewer can lose themselves in without anything jarring or sticking out; the less noticeable the hair and makeup, the better.”

The Crown Season 3 Made a Reference to One of Princess Diana's Most Iconic Quotes

Princess Diana, or rather Lady Diana Spencer, won’t be making her debut on The Crown until season four, but the groundwork for her arrival is certainly being laid out in season three. In fact, royal fans probably noticed a reference to one of Diana’s most famous quotes in episode nine, “Imborglio.”

Let’s set the scene, shall we? Over the course of the season—which arrived on Netflix on November 17— viewers have been introduced to a few new characters, including Camilla Shand and Andrew Parker-Bowles. Camilla and Andrew are dating, but then she also becomes involved with Prince Charles and Parker-Bowles with Princess Anne. It’s a complex love quadrangle and the beginning of an even more complicated relationship situation that will have royal ramifications for years to come. Charles is very much in love with Camilla, but his family fears she is not suitable enough for the future King of England.

Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, Lord Mountbatten, and the Queen Mother bring Princess Anne in to discuss the matter and Anne says that everything will be fine between Charles and Camilla as long as her brother “is prepared for there to always be three in the marriage,” referring to Charles, Camilla, and Andrew Parker-Bowles. The royal family maneuvered behind the scenes to ensure that Camilla married Parker-Bowles and Charles, of course, went on to marry Diana. But, as we all know, Charles’s relationship with Camilla continued.

Princess Anne’s quote in the episode seemed to be inspired from a bombshell TV interview Diana gave in 1995 in which she openly discussed her husband’s affair. “Do you think Mrs. Parker-Bowles was a factor in the breakdown of your marriage?” journalist Martin Bashir asked. “Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded,” Diana replied.

Charles and Diana separated in 1992 and officially divorced in 1996 before she tragically died in a car accident in August 1997. Charles and Camilla eventually married in 2005. And in case you weren’t already excited about the upcoming seasons of The Crown, you better be now, because there is still so much drama to come.
