Game of Thrones Secretly Revealed Who Won the Iron Throne in This Season 1 Poster

Warning: Game of Thrones spoilers ahead.

Game of Thrones fans are still reeling from the revelation that Bran Stark was the one who ended up on the Iron Throne in the series finale. Well, not the Iron Throne exactly: The physical seat was actually melted by Drogon, but Bran was anointed head of the six kingdoms. (The North became its own territory that Queen Sansa Stark now rules.) This is the answer we’ve been waiting years for—and fan reactions are divided, to say the least.

But what happened shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. For one, women on Game of Thrones never properly get their due. (Yes, Sansa is queen of the North but she deserves to rule over everything, damn it!) Also, HBO low-key revealed the Bran Stark-Iron Throne twist in a season one poster. Yup.

Take a close look at the throwback image of Ned Stark, below. He’s sitting on the Iron Throne and to his right is what looks like a raven. Bran, as we all know, became the Three-Eyed Raven on Game of Thrones, and he’s also Ned’s son. So was this image a hint that he would ultimately take the Iron Throne?

Twitter user @thommybell certainly thinks so. He pointed out this connection on Monday, May 20 and has since racked up hundreds of likes. “Anyone else just notice the raven on Ned’s right from the season one poster,” he tweeted. “Raven + Ned Stark on the Iron Throne = Bran Stark. It was in front of us THE WHOLE TIME.”

Of course, it’s possible this is just a coincidence—or maybe Ned is seated next to a crow in the photo, not a raven. (One user who replied to @thommybell’s tweet pointed that out.) It’s certainly an interesting theory, though. I absolutely wouldn’t put it past Team Game of Thrones to hide the answer to its biggest mystery in plain sight.

If you are feeling some type of way about the Game of Thrones series finale, you won’t find much sympathy from its stars. Sophie Turner recently slammed the petition fans started to redo season eight. “I think it’s disrespectful to the crew, and the writers, and the filmmakers who have worked tirelessly over 10 years, and for 11 months shooting the last season,” she told the New York Times. “Like 50-something night shoots. So many people worked so, so hard on it, and for people to just rubbish it because it’s not what they want to see is just disrespectful.”

Meanwhile, Kit Harington told Esquire in April, “Whatever critic spends half an hour writing about this season and makes their [negative] judgement on it, in my head they can go f–k themselves. ‘Cause I know how much work was put into this. I know how much people cared about this.”

All the Hidden Meanings in Sansa’s ‘Game of Thrones’ Finale Dress

This post is dark and full of spoilers. You have been warned.

There’s only one thing fans can agree on when it comes to the Game of Thrones series finale: Sansa Stark is a queen. I mean that both literally and metaphorically: Not only did she become queen of the North after the region separated from the other six kingdoms, but she ascended her throne in a very badass dress. A dress that, unsurprisingly, was covered in hidden meanings.

We’ve long known that an outfit or hairstyle on Game of Thrones is never simply just for aesthetics. Whether it’s a sigil’s placement on a coat or a distinct dress pattern, the costume design and hair and makeup often the first place the showrunners and costume designer Michele Clapton will embed details about the characters’ development. Their outfits tell as much a story about who they are—and who they’ve become—as their actions. And no one has demonstrated that more than Sansa.

“I think you can see that she is influenced throughout her journey until she finally comes into her own style in season seven,” Clapton told Glamour before the season eight premiere. “The look is a culmination of her difficult story. The ‘Little Bird’ initially copied the style of Cersei, when she first arrives in Kings Landing. She then retreats to the cut of her mother’s costume, a refuge, showing how she feels, wounded and scared, but she can’t speak it…. She tells of her pain through embroidery and color.”

The show’s finale—and Sansa’s coronation outfit—then represent the strength and power she now represents. Take a close look at both of these GIFs, below. Notice the small details in Sansa’s sleeves and the wolf stole around her neck. All of these shades have deep, special meanings—and some of them might surprise you.

Let’s start with those aforementioned sleeves, which are printed with leaves from the Weirwood trees in Winterfell. These trees are grown only in the North, so naturally Sansa would reference them somewhere on her dress.

The sleeves are also covered in fish scales, a subtle nod to the House of Tully (her mom Catelyn Stark’s house). If you recall, Sansa’s mother was killed during the Red Wedding, so her representing House of Tully at her coronation is a nice full-circle gesture to her mother’s legacy.

Sansa’s breast plate is also adorned in tree branches—yet another nod to the Weirwood forest. Refinery 29 points out that the branches on this piece of armor are a good omen: The North is strong and resilient but, above all, peaceful. That’s refreshing.

The wolf stole, as you probably know, is the House of Stark’s token, so it’s no surprise we see it on this finale look. Sansa’s crown is essentially in the shape of a wolf too. Talk about some family pride.

Fans are living for all of these hidden references. Check out just a few of their tweets, which have even more photos of Sansa’s gorgeous dress.

Clapton has done it again.

Kate Middleton’s Latest Hairstyle Looks Like It’s Straight Out of ‘Game of Thrones’

If you drew a Venn diagram of the royals, Game of Thrones, and gorgeous braids, I would be firmly planted in the center, as these are all top on my list of interests in life. Apparently, Kate Middleton is as swept up in Thrones mania as the rest of us. She just arrived for an afternoon at the Chelsea Flower Show in a long, printed Erdem dress and her famous hair in a braided style that looks like it could have been inspired by Dany or Sansa.

Middleton was on hand to show off the “Back to Nature” garden she played a part in creating for the show, and I’m obsessed with the half-up, half-down braided style she chose for the occasion. It’s not often that we see her hair braided, but hopefully it’s going to be part of her summer vibe.

Check it out below, via shots from royal reporter Emily Andrews.

I’m not pulling this out of thin air either. Middleton and her husband, Prince William, have said in the past that they are GoT fans. Back in 2017, Tom Wlaschiha, who played Jaqen H’ghar—the person who trained Arya Stark in the ways of the Faceless Men—met the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and recalled part of his conversation with them to the Evening Standard. “They said they really liked Game of Thrones and have watched every [season]. They wanted spoilers but I said I couldn’t tell them,” Wlaschiha said. “I’m surprised they have time to watch such a long-running series.” (And it obviously makes a ton of sense for members of a royal family to be interested in a show about the rise and fall of dynasties and kingdoms.)

Just yesterday we saw new (adorable) photos of the Cambridges’ three children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. It should not go unnoticed that Charlotte is also sporting some great braids, just as her mom did today.

We love a Cambridge braid moment, but what we’d really like to know is what Middleton thought about the finale and whether or not she’s Team Sansa.

Robin Arryn Had a Major Glow-Up on Game of Thrones, and Fans Are Living

There were plenty of loose ends to tie up on Sunday night’s Game of Thrones series finale, including finding out who would live and who would die. One of the biggest questions, though, was figuring out who would get the Iron Throne. Interestingly, the most surprising reveal during that sequence wasn’t actually who got the Iron Throne—though that was shocking—but seeing one character’s major glow-up from past seasons. That character? Robin Arryn, played by Lino Facioli.

In case y’all forgot, Robin Arryn is Sansa, Arya, and Bran Stark’s cousin, and he is also now Lord of the Vale. When we first met Robin in season four, he was basically the worst. He was entitled, spoiled, and rude to Sansa after she’d escaped the evil clutches of the Lannisters. It was hard to find any redeeming qualities in him.

Cut to the GoT series finale, specifically the scene where the lords and ladies of the Seven Kingdoms gather to decide on the future of Westeros. As the camera panned around the council, some viewers immediately did a double-take as grown Robin was revealed to us.

In a Neville Longbottom-esque twist of fate, Robin got hot, and apparently got his leadership skills together to take on a position of power. Viewers quickly took notice, too, celebrating just how good puberty had been to the once-irritating character. The powerful stare, the perfectly-coiffed hair, the clothes, the swagger: Robin is now officially snack, and the GoT fandom is taking it as a consolation prize for the otherwise-polarizing series finale.

Eighteen-year-old Lino Facioli, who refers to himself as “that weird kid on Game of Thrones” in his Instagram bio, took a moment to celebrate his return during the show’s finale with some before-and-after-pics of his character. “9 years ago I had the honor of being invited to work in this incredible series,” Facioli wrote. “It’s been a wonderful adventure and I’m so, so thankful for having been able to be a part of it!”

Sansa Stark Is the Real Queen We Deserved on Game of Thrones

Caution: Spoilers for Game of Thrones ahead.

Stand up, Sansa Hive—we finally have a Queen. Game of Thrones took its final bow last night, closing out its eight-year run with a final episode that left many fans scratching their heads.

To recap: Daenerys flattened King’s Landing and was inches from taking the Throne, Jon stabbed her, Drogon burned the Iron Throne to the ground, and then a counsel of Westerosi leaders picked the first chosen King of the Seven (now Six) Kingdoms, and they landed on…Bran Stark. Despite that bizarre and underwhelming choice, there was at least one positive development from it: Sansa Stark is now the Queen of the North, something her fans—a.k.a. those of us who have our heads screwed on straight—deserved to see.

HBO

New members of the Sansa Hive aren’t welcome here—I’ve been a Sansa stan for as long as I’ve watched the show, and throughout those years, I’ve endured Game of Thrones “fans” calling Sansa whiny, weak, and spineless. For some reason, the eldest Stark sister was polarizing.

But on last night’s final episode, she proved why everyone should have been stanning this whole time. Case in point: When Tyrion first suggested that the counsel choose a king or queen and her uncle Edmure Tully embarrassed himself by standing up and pontificating about his accolades, Sansa cut him off with a command, “Uncle. Please sit.” It was the only moment in the episode that made me audibly gasp for air.

In that same scene last night, Sansa was the only member of the counsel to vote against Bran, asserting without contest that the North would recede from the Seven Kingdoms and become and independent state once again, with her ruling in Winterfell. That’s not the only savage way she called out her little brother:

Sansa’s rise to power was a slow burn; but once she grabbed it, she held on with an iron grip. Even when Lady Stark was stripped of her name, her autonomy, and everything she knew and loved, she was still—to borrow a phrase Turner herself used to describe Arya—was always “that bitch.” There was the time she bitch-slapped Robin Arryn in the face. Or when she sniped at Septa Mordane in season one with one of her greatest one-liners: “Oh wait, I just realized I don’t care.” She’s the Stark who always reminded us that “the lone wolf dies, but the pack survives,” and speaker of truths such as, “No one can protect me. No one can protect anyone.”

Sansa has been especially good at putting mediocre men in their place and making them feel mortified for even breathing around her. This season she told Tyrion, “I used to think you were the cleverest man alive.” That didn’t even sting half as badly as her takedown of Lord Baelish in season seven: “No need to seize the last word, Lord Baelish. I’ll assume it was something clever.” Sansa and Arya conspiring to kill Littlefinger at the end of last season was probably the most satisfying moment in Game of Thrones history for me—a feeling so blissful, I wish it could have been recreated in last night’s episode. But could anything really feel as rapturous as Sansa being crowned Queen? Answer: Hard no.

To the rest of the Sansa Hive, it’s been a pleasure stanning so ruthlessly alongside you. In my opinion, the Sansa Hive is the most passionate (and therefore the scariest) of all the Game of Thrones fandoms. We’re the scrappy ones, the ones who are always ready to drive our claws through your extensions and drag you by the hair.

I’ll miss our Queen’s severe wintry lewks, her cascading orange braids, and her devastating one-liners that made Ariana Grande look timid. And I want to thank Sophie Turner for bringing her wonderful energy to play Sansa (lest we forget the video of her chugging wine on the jumbotron at Madison Square Garden). Screw Bran—Sansa Stark is the Queen we’ve always deserved. Step on me, ginger legend!

People Are Not Happy With Arya's Ending on Game of Thrones

Warning: Game of Thrones spoilers ahead.

The Game of Thrones series finale was an emotional rollercoaster, filled with so many twists and turns we didn’t see coming. Bran Stark was anointed head of the six kingdoms, while Sansa became queen of the separated North. Dany died. There was a mysterious water bottle in one of the shots. Fans will be processing what went down for weeks, if not months.

And they probably won’t get over what happened to Arya any time soon. In an interesting turn of events, she decided to lead an exploration of unknown territories in Westeros. We’re not sure what her intentions are on this journey, but some fans say the move is reminiscent of colonialism.

Many are confused as to why Arya, who’s so good at combat, was given this ending. Remember, people: She killed the effing Night King. It seems like her talents are better suited for a more intense mission.

The Twitter reactions, below, echo that sentiment. Check them out for yourself:

Hands down, Arya’s biggest moment on GoT this season was the Night King takedown. Maisie Williams revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly she wasn’t sure how fans were going to react to it.

“I immediately thought that everybody would hate it, that Arya doesn’t deserve it,” she said. “The hardest thing in any series is when you build up a villain that’s so impossible to defeat and then you defeat them. It has to be intelligently done because otherwise people are like, ‘Well, [the villain] couldn’t have been that bad when some 100-pound girl comes in and stabs him.’ You gotta make it cool. And then I told my boyfriend and he was like, ‘Mmm, should be Jon though, really, shouldn’t it?’”

The answer to that is, obviously, no. Arya earned that Night King kill—and every other great thing that happened to her this season, too.
