Meghan Markle Made a Surprise Appearance at the British Fashion Awards 2018

Sound the duchess alarm—Meghan Markle just popped out for the evening in London, and the reason is incredibly special. She made surprise appearance at the 2018 Fashion Awards, a yearly ceremony put on by the British Fashion Council, to honor Clare Waight Keller, the designer of her magnificent wedding dress.

The Duchess of Sussex was on hand to present Waight Keller, the creative director of Givenchy with the British Designer of the Year (Womenswear) award. The crowd, of course, went wild.

“It is such an honor to be here celebrating British fashion and British fashion designers in my new home of the U.K.,” she said on stage.

Markle, of course, wore custom Givenchy for the occasion—an elegant one-shouldered gown, accessorized with gold bangles by Pippa Small, per What Meghan Wore. And check out the slit on that skirt—this was definitely an outfit made for the fashion crowd. The Duchess slicked her hair back in a sleek low bun.

“As all of you in this room know, we have a deep connection to what we wear,” Markle said on stage, before presenting Waight Keller with her award. “Sometimes it’s very personal; sometimes it’s emotional. But for me, this connection is rooted in, really, being able to understand that it’s about supporting and empowering each other, especially as women. When we choose to wear a certain designer, we’re not just a reflection of their creativity and their vision, but we’re also an extension of their values in something of the fabric, so to speak, that is much more meaningful.”

In her acceptance speech, Waight Keller talked about getting to know the Duchess of Sussex on a “personal level” and thanked her for “trusting her” to design her gown for “the most important day in her life.”

To say it was a successful collaboration under enormous pressure would be a massive understatement—so congrats to the designer on a well-deserved honor.

Ariana Grande's 'Thank U, Next' Director Says Pete Davidson's Burn Book Page Was a Total Surprise On Set

Ariana Grande first met music video director Hannah Lux Davis in 2014 on the set for the “Bang Bang” music video. Grande, Nicki Minaj, and Jessie J, who all collaborated on the smash, had decided to hire a female director, and Minaj (who’d worked with Davis before) knew Davis was the exact woman for the job.

Grande has collaborated with Davis ever since—partnering with her on such iconic works of art as the visuals for her Dangerous Woman tour and her most recent internet-breaking, instant-hit video, “Thank U, Next.”

In that time, Davis has watched Grande grow into a fearless performer, but she still remembers her at the start of her career, when she was greener, but full of potential.

“She was kind of shy,” Davis tells Glamour, recalling the “Bang Bang” set. “Her eye contact to camera wasn’t as fierce as it is today, but I remember being like, ‘Gosh. She’s so good when she connects to camera.’ She’s just gotten so much more confident over the years, and it’s been so fun to watch.”

Davis hasn’t just been with Grande for her professional achievements—she’s seen her deal with personal highs and lows. Over time, the women have built up a trust and a bond that’s obvious in their collaborations. Take this latest video, for example. “With ‘Thank U, Next,’ I was like, ‘Oh my god, I’ve known you with all of these guys!'” Davis exclaims. “I never met Pete, but I knew her then, and I remember the Ricky phase, the Sean phase, and Mac. I was there with her for all of them! It’s cool to be somebody who’s been with her on the journey of growing up and learning and finding herself, and that’s what the song is about.”

Less than 24 hours after its premiere, “Thank U, Next” already has 47 million views. Glamour spoke with Davis about the viral response to the video, her creative process with Grande, and of course, the Burn Book.

GLAMOUR: You’ve worked on a lot of huge music videos with artists like Nicki Minaj, Demi Lovato, and of course, Ariana, but what is it about “Thank U, Next” that is resonating with viewers in a way we’ve never seen before?

HANNAH LUX DAVIS: Well I think all eyes are on Ariana right now, and it’s such a personal and relatable song. In terms of the video, it hits a lot of notes of nostalgia, which brings in different audiences. It’s not just her younger fans, but also people who love the movies [we recreated], who might not at first be Ariana fans, but still want to tune in. But [the reaction] definitely feels really different and exciting. Ariana and I have been FaceTiming all day—she loves to FaceTime, she’ll never do a phone call or a voicemail, just a FaceTime—and she was just like, “oh my god.” We’ve been sitting on the phone just staring at each other going, “Oh my god, oh my god,” a million times back and forth, because that’s how it feels.

GLAMOUR: I read an interview you did with Billboard about your creative process with Ariana. Like how when you were working on the “Side to Side” video she came to you and said, “Let’s do something with spin bikes,” and you just took it from there. What vision did she come to you with, this time?

HLD: We were working on “Breathin” in New York, and I came over to her place and we were sitting on the floor in the living room with dogs and animals everywhere, even Piggy Smalls, who’s so cute. He’s like an old man girl, because she smells and feels like an old man, but is a lady. So we’re sitting on the floor and she was like I want to play you my new song, which was “Thank U, Next.” I was in total shock because I was like, “Oh my god she’s listing names.”

We narrowed it down to films that had the same common thread of a strong female lead, who went through a breakup, and came out on the other side a more empowered, strong, version of themselves.

Then we were talking about a video and she was like, “What about Mean Girls and a Burn Book? But instead of a Burn Book it’s a “Thank U, Next” book and I write all these things I’m thankful for in the Burn Book about the guys?” So right away you’re like, “Yeah, that’s it.” Then we went down a rabbit hole of that genre and that time and era and then we were like what if we did Legally Blonde? We just started listing movies and we were like, “We have to do Bring It On and 13 Going on 30.” Then we had to cool it and were like ok, four movies. Let’s do four.

We narrowed it down really organically to films that had the same common thread of a strong female lead, who went through a breakup, and came out on the other side a more empowered, strong, version of themselves—which is very much true to what the song was about. Like with Elle Woods, her ex-boyfriend lead her to Harvard, where she found her passion. She’s obviously grateful for her ex! So we focused on these situations that push characters into positions that are uncomfortable, but they realize they can do it and that’s a great message for young girls.

GLAMOUR: Another fun thing about this video is that it was an epic reunion. You and Ariana got to work together again, Jennifer Coolidge was able to reprise her iconic role as Paulette in Legally Blonde, and the cast of Victorious to came together for the first time in years. It just seemed like the best time. But what was it actually like on set?

HLD: She had a lot of her friends and former cast mates from other shows and any time somebody got to set and were in wardrobe they were just like, “Oh my god can you believe we’re doing it?” Ariana was like, “This is a coolest thing being a pop star has ever allowed me to do. To bring all these people together, all of these ideas together and to actually pull it off and do it justice.” [My favorite] behind the scenes moments were when Ariana would take a moment and just geek out over reenacting these scenes and getting to put a 2018 spin on it.

GLAMOUR: Speaking of cameos, the internet’s favorite one is far and away Kris Jenner. How did you get her to play the most epic amateur momager of all time?

HLD: So good, right? If you don’t use Amy Poehler, or Joan Grande herself, it’s gotta be Kris Jenner. It was Ariana’s idea to include her. They’re friends, so Ariana reached out and Kris was interested. It was a fast process to get her on board. On set she didn’t take herself too seriously and just got right in there and got into character so effortlessly. It was so funny because we’re doing all these ad libs with her and I was like, “No this is actually you! You are this person.” We had a few different Juicy sweatsuit options and we wanted to make sure it was just right. We had more than five so we could find the perfect one for her, and we found the right vibe.

GLAMOUR: So the Burn Book was the initial conceit of the video. How much of it did you have planned out? Did you and Ariana talk about what she’d write about each guy ahead of time?

HLD: She knew that she wanted to keep it positive, fun, and tongue-in-cheek. She was like, “Oh my god I should totally be like, ‘could still get it’ for Sean.” She kind of had some of these premeditated; like for Pete, writing, “huuuuuuge.” The one that came out as we were filming was the “sorry I dipped.” We were rolling and she was writing in the book, and we had to have her write multiple pages because we had to do multiple takes, but on that last take, she wrote “sry I dipped.” It was just like, gold. It was so real! She was so honest and that’s what makes it so fun.

GLAMOUR: Speaking of “huuuuuge” there were a lot of awesome Easter eggs in the video, including the references to “BDE” (Big Dick Energy) like on the logo of the UPS guy’s uniform, in the Legally Blonde homage! How did you decide to reference Pete’s uh, “size,” in this video?

HLD: I love that you saw that! I don’t want to tell people the Easter eggs, I want them to find them. But as for the uniform, [the actor] was actually wearing a UPS logo on the uniform, and we had to change it in post. Which is so fun because we get to go back and change things and that idea was all her, [to write BDE as the logo instead of UPS on the uniform]. We didn’t want [the guys] to be mad about anything so we were like let’s keep it fun, so if they see it they’d be like, yeah, that’s cool.

GLAMOUR: Pete certainly can’t get mad about this one!

HLD: Exactly!

The Royal Family Just Got Together For a Surprise Photo Shoot

In celebration of Prince Charles’ 70th birthday, the royal family got together for a quick, casual photo-shoot. And the images are stunning, naturally.

Clarence House posted two pics by photographer Chris Jackson to its Instagram page, and they feature Prince Charles; Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall; Meghan Markle; Prince Harry; Kate Middleton; Prince William; and William and Kate’s three children Prince Louis, Prince George, and Princess Charlotte.

Jackson took the photos in the garden of Clarence House, though exactly when is still a mystery. Prince Charles’ birthday is tomorrow, but there was a celebration for it over the summer, so it’s very possible the photo shoot happened either then or now.

The first photo features the family all smiling. Markle is wearing a chic white Givenchy dress, while Middleton opted for a blue polka-dotted Alessandra Rich number with a preppy collar. Their husbands, Prince Harry and Prince William, each wore navy suit jackets with white button-down shirts. Prince Charles is rocking a pinstripe suit, Camilla is also wearing a white dress, and the kids all look adorable in various shades of powder blue.

Check it out for yourself, below:

The second photo is clearly an outtake, with Markle, Prince Harry, Prince William, and Prince George all laughing as they got into position. It’s arguably even cuter than the serious pic.

If the family decides to do a similar photo shoot next year, they’ll have another baby in the mix. Markle and Prince Harry announced via Kensington Palace in mid-October that they’re expecting their first child. It is due some time in the spring of 2019.

Lady Gaga Paid an Emotional Surprise Visit to California Wildfire Evacuees

As wildfires continue to ravage parts of California, displacing thousands of residents, many celebrities are using their platform for good, taking action by motivating those who can to give to relief efforts and donating much needed supplies themselves.

Lady Gaga, who had to evacuate her own Malibu home, stopped by a shelter set up at Pacific Palisades High School to offer her love and support. TMZ reports that she spent about an hour and a half at the shelter visiting with victims, handing out gift cards, and taking photos. Gaga reportedly even sang to a 98-year-old woman who had to leave her own home.

Gaga also took time to offer a few words of support and a powerful message about mental health during tough times:

“This is not easy. I know this is not easy. And I know that a lot of you are feeling a lot of pain right now, and a lot of shock. I know that I feel kinda in a daze and I’m not really sure when or how this is going to hit me when it does,” she said. “What I can tell you is that I will pray for each and every one of you. You will be in my thoughts. I extend my love to each and every one of you. I know we do not know each other, but I love you. This is an emergency but you are not alone.”

“And what I’d like to encourage you to do, though it might be hard,” she continued, “is to share your stories and talk to each other during this time. There’s a wonderful mental health team here, you know, if you’re feeling sad, if you’re feeling afraid, if you’re feeling hopeless, if you’re feeling something maybe you don’t even understand, come to one of them and talk. And after this is over, this moment, and you move on to going home, or not, if that happens. Remember this moment right now and let’s keep the faith together.”

She also reminded those who are affected to keep in tune with their mental health: “Please do not discount your mental health during this time. It is so important that you take care of what’s going on in your head and in your heart, because what you feel now is going to feel very different next week. And it’s going to feel different the week after that and a month from that and maybe even a year,” she said, before issuing a call for unity. “So let’s just, in this moment, I want to be respectful of everybody here…. We are probably not all of the same denomination. We might not all be religious, but I would just like to make a pact with you, in this room right now, that I will be with you every step of the way, even the second that I leave this room. I love you and you’re gonna get through this, and we’re going to get through this together.”

(Watch the video of her speech here.)

Cardi B Had a Over-the-Top Vodka-Themed Surprise Birthday Party Because She's Cardi B

To be honest, it really shouldn’t surprise us that rap royal Cardi B did the most on her 26th birthday, but wow, Cardi B made sure to turn the dial up to “extra” on her 26th birthday—and it’s all thanks to her husband Offset.

According to People, Offset surprised Cardi by telling her they were going out for a romantic dinner—and then led her straight into a luxurious, lavish, vodka-themed surprise blowout with a ton of her friends.

And yep, it was all about Cardi: The party was sponsored by CÎROC Black Raspberry (hence the vodka theme) and included a 12-foot LED wall that projected different images of the birthday girl throughout the entire night.

There also was a dress code for the guests, so they could properly honor their rightful queen: They were instructed to wear black so that Cardi B would truly be the star of the night, which, of course, she was—especially in an electric-pink Moschino dress.

Cardi was touched and naturally responded to the whole thing with her usual strain of hilariousness: “Hubbs told me that he was gonna take me out to dinner and I appreciate the surprise birthday party and all that but I’m fucking hungry right now,” she said in one her Instagram stories. “I’m hungry but I’m so happy.”

She also posted the moment that she walked into the party and got the epic surprise from her guests on Instagram, writing, “The fact that i avoided eating dinner last night cause babe said we was going to a romantic dinner then BOOM!! ???Thank you everybody that showed up to my surprise bday party !It was Soo beautiful Thank you babe for the surprise and everybody who was involved!”

There was a birthday serenade, too:

And to top things off, it seems Offset later presented Cardi with a dozen red roses and, according to her IG, some serious bling. He iced her out with a gigantic diamond necklace and bracelet, both of which were adorned with an equally gigantic charm that spell out “Kulture,” the name of their daughter.

Surprise: Bachelor in Paradise's Joe Amabile and Kendall Long Are Back Together

Caution: Spoilers for Bachelor in Paradise ahead.

It’s been a whirlwind 48 hours for Bachelor in Paradise fans, especially those who shipped Grocery Store Joe Amabile and Taxidermy Kendall Long. The once-solid couple had one of the more frustrating breakups this season, after Kendall told Joe on Monday’s episode that she didn’t know what kind of love she felt for him. Both left in tears, and all of Twitter went into full-fledged #TeamJoe mode:

But surprise! At the Bachelor in Paradise finale, Joe and Kendall revealed they’re back together. If that wasn’t enough, Chris Harrison invited a stunned Joe to compete on this season’s Dancing with the Stars, and he said yes. Talk about your life doing a 180 before your eyes.

“I had no idea that was coming! No idea. I still don’t know what’s going on,” Joe told Glamour after the finale. “I’m freaking out in my head. I don’t regret saying yes, [but] I don’t know how I’m going to do. It’s going to be interesting.”

As for Kendall, she can’t wait to see Joe out of his element. “I am so freaking excited to see Joe dance, because Joe hates dancing! Hates it. If you get a couple drinks in him he’ll dance a little bit, but he isn’t a dancer. So this is great. I’m excited for him to learn, [see] this new version of him, and grow with him.”

It’s a far cry from where the couple ended things in Mexico back in late June. “I feel like [the break-up] kind of happened for a reason, because we learned so much about each other,” Kendall says. “We had to almost be thrown in to everything in order to discover if this was actually something we wanted to work on.”

For his part, Joe thought there was no chance he’d get back together with Kendall when he left Paradise. “I thought it was over,” he tells us. “And I thought it was over because she was scared…and after that, that was it for me.” While Joe says he didn’t doubt that Kendall did care for him, he says that looking back “she was just scared because I’m the opposite of what she’s had or ever thought she’d have.”

And now? “I’m very happy,” Kendall says. “It was a really long road to get to where I am now, but overall I feel like it’s positive and everything turned out for the best. Once I got over the fear of everything I was just able to enjoy [the relationship].”

Kendall—who lives in Los Angeles—is excited to welcome Joe to her city while he competes on DWTS, but isn’t so sure she’d be willing to move to his hometown of Chicago once Joe completes his run on the show. “I think it would make more sense for Joe to move to Los Angeles as opposed to me moving to Chicago, but I do love Chicago. I just wouldn’t go there during the winter!”

Joe on the other hand, is only thinking about surviving his DWTS debut and this newfound fame. “I’m getting used to it,” he says. “It’s fun, it’s different. I don’t hate it.” He pauses. “I mean, I get nervous, but I think that’s normal. My life just majorly changed tonight.”
