2019 AMAs: Taylor Swift Shut Down Feud Over Music Rights With Career-Spanning Medley

Taylor Swift‘s American Music Awards performance had been making headlines long before she stepped onto the stage Sunday night due to a music rights battle she’s embroiled in with her former label Big Machine Label Group, Scott Borchetta and Scooter Braun. But during the 2019 AMAs, Swift managed to have the final word on the feud without actually speaking a word about it. In classic Swift fashion, the singer clapped back through subtle easter eggs in her clothing and song choices.

To kick off her career-spanning medley, Swift appeared in a prison-like jacket covered in the names of the albums she does not legally own and sang the first few lines of “The Man.” It was a seemingly curious choice to open her performance considering the song isn’t even one of her singles (yet), but the lyrics seem to say it all: “I’m so sick of running as fast as I can /Wondering if I’d get there quicker if I was a man/ And I’m so sick of them coming at me again/ ‘Cause if I was a man, then I’d be the man.”

The 29-year-old then shed the jacket, revealing a gold body suit underneath, and launched into more of her well-known classics, including “I Knew You Were Trouble,” “Blank Space,” and “Shake It Off” (featuring her tour buddies Camila Cabello and Halsey)—all of which could easily be taken as jabs toward Borchetta and Braun.

Selena Gomez  Performs Live for the First Time in Two Years at the 2019 AMAs

Gomez had taken some time out of the public eye in recent years. While she wasn’t releasing new movies or music, she focused on producing show like 13 Reasons Why, lending her voice to movies like Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, and giving awesome toasts at her friend’s weddings. But earlier this fall, the singer stepped back into the spotlight, dropping back-to-back singles signaling a return to her musical roots.

Fans immediately surmised that both songs were about Gomez’s tumultuous relationship with Justin Bieber. While Gomez has not mentioned Bieber by name while promoting the new song, she has been getting super candid about her exes.

“Yeah, I think, you know, I’m really grateful too because I’ve actually experienced that [exes moving on to another relationship quickly] a million times before,” she said when speaking to Ryan Seacrest. “And that’s the unfortunate part about what I do. So it’s all very real to me, and I’m sure it’s just entertainment for other people, but I think I had become numb to it, and it would be stupid of me if I didn’t acknowledge what I had felt because it would be inauthentic, and that’s everything I claim to be and do.”

“These two songs were me wrapping up a chapter in a pretty little bow, and the rest of the album is just all about where I am now and where I’m going so, in my opinion, these are great songs, but I’ve saved the best for later,” Gomez added.

The singer recently announced that the full, as-yet-untitled album will be released on January 10, 2020.

Taylor Swift Threw an Epic AMAs After Party

The American Music Awards was a big night for Taylor Swift, and she celebrated in — pun intended — style.

After a show-stopping performance, four award wins that cinched her the record for the most decorated female artist in AMAs’ history, and urging fans to get out and vote on November 6, the “I Did Something Bad” singer capped off the evening with a massive after party alongside some of her best friends.

The guest list included Shawn Mendes, Jack Antonoff (who has collaborated with T. Swift on several albums), Hayley Kiyoko (who performed on Taylor’s Reputation tour) — as well as actor Ruby Rose and Taylor’s longtime hairstylist Riawna Capri. The Swift Squad took the opportunity to share some photos of the evening on Instagram, and needless to say you’ll be pretty disappointed your invites got lost in the mail.

Taylor herself also shared a carousel photo to the ‘gram of herself posing with some of her Reputation dancers, writing, “Getting to perform with people I love this much is a real mood.”

One of her dancers, Robert Green, also posted a photo from the evening along with a sweet tribute to the singer. “So…my #WCW obviously goes to @taylorswift! What a night!” he wrote. “Congrats on winning every single nomination at the AMA’s last night…and more importantly for being such a BOSS when it comes to standing up for what’s right. We need more fearlessness such as yours! It is always and honor working with you.”

It’s been quite some time since Taylor’s epic Fourth of July and birthday parties have graced our social media feeds, and it’s refreshing to see she and some of her squad back together. Even if the old Taylor is technically dead, it’s clear that her party planning skills most certainly are not.

2018 AMAs: Carrie Underwood Gives Emotional Performance of "Spinning Bottles"

On Tuesday, Carrie Underwood took the stage at the 2018 American Music Awards at Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater, her growing baby bump on full display, to perform “Spinning Bottles” off her new album Cry Pretty. The performance came shortly after Underwood took home her sixth Best Country Female Artist trophy.

During her emotional performance, Underwood stood on a small, round stage that turned slowly and was lined with tall candles stuck in colored glass bottles—in other words, her performance of “Spinning Bottles” was surrounded by literal spinning bottles. Accompanied only by a piano and some strings, the country star wore a simple, floaty burgundy gown with cold-shoulder long sleeves and an empire waist.

Watch, below:

Underwood gave fans a sneak peek at her AMAs’ plans on Sunday, when she shared a photo on Instagram from her rehearsals for the performance. In the accompanying caption, she revealed via hashtag that she’d be performing “Spinning Bottles”—her first live performance of the song since her Cry Pretty album dropped in September.

The 35-year-old, who’s already mom to 3-year-old son Isaiah with husband Mike Fisher, announced in August that she was expecting their second child. “Mike, Isaiah, and I are absolutely over the moon and excited to be adding another fish to our pond,” Underwood said in a social media post at the time. “This has been a dream come true with the album and baby news. We’re just so excited and glad you guys can share this with us and be a part of this with us. Love you guys. We will see you on the road in 2019!”

Now all that’s left to do is prep Isaiah on becoming a big brother. “He’ll be really sweet and talk to my belly and kiss my belly. He’s the sweetest little boy,” she said. “But no kid can really know that their life is going to change. He’ll have to share Mommy!”

Taylor Swift Makes Her Second Political Statement of the Week at the 2018 AMAs

At the American Music Awards on Tuesday night, October 9, Taylor Swift won her 22nd AMA for Artist of the Year, breaking Whitney Houston’s record to become the most decorated artist of all time. During her acceptance speech for the history-making honor, she not only took the opportunity to thank her fans, but also to send a message about how important it is to vote on November 6 in the midterm elections.

Swift began by praising her fans for being “fun,” “funny,” “cool,” and “loyal,” and went on to share how lucky she feels to have their support. Then she revealed what this massive accomplishment truly means to her. “Every time that you have made me lucky enough to ever get to stand on a stage and have something really sparkly in my hands and say thank you, every single time this happens, it means something differently to me,” she said. “It means something different every time, represents something different. This time, it represents encouragement and motivation for me to be better, work harder, and make you guys proud as much as I possibly can. So, thank you for this incredible symbol of encouragement.”

She continued, “And I wanted to make a mention of the fact that this award and every single award given out tonight were voted on by the people. And you know what else is voted on by the people is the midterm elections on November 6. Get out and vote. I love you guys.”

Fans have taken to Twitter to praise Swift for using her platform to get people to to the polls. “I am glad @taylorswift13 is using her platform to speak out and let us know how important it is to vote this midterm election. I support her 100% we need to stand strong and not accept the mess that is going on in the W.H. and the Supreme Court they both need to be voted out [sic],” wrote on user. “All love for you @taylorswift13,” commented another.

This is the second political statement that the traditionally apolitical Swift made this week. Just days ago, she took to Instagram to endorse Tennessee’s Democratic candidates for Senate and House of Representatives. While her endorsement prompted harsh responses from many conservatives, it had a quantifiable impact on voter registration: In the 24 hours after her tweet, 65,000 new voters registered across the country.

Swift may have done something bad in her performance at the AMAs, but clearly she’s doing something really, really good offstage.

AMAs 2018 Recap: The Biggest Moments You Need to Know About

The 46th annual American Music Awards (AMAs) kicked off at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles tonight, October 9, with a show-stopping performance from Taylor Swift, and things didn’t slow down from there. From a beautiful tribute to the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin to a high-energy dance party led by host Tracee Ellis Ross and every hilarious Cardi B meme in between, this year’s lineup was pure gold. At just over three hours, the AMAs saw a slew of performances and buzzy moments that are sure to keep the Twitterverse talking, so catch up on all of those and more, below.

Taylor Swift’s show opener: For her first awards show performance in nearly three years, T.Swift kicked off the night by singing “I Did Something Bad” with the help of a giant cobra (named Karyn, believe it or not) and an impressive display of pyrotechnics.

Tracee Ellis Ross’ epic dance medley: Wearing custom grillz and a kickass sparkly black jumpsuit, Tracee Ellis Ross served up a high-energy dance number to a medley of hits, from Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” to Beyoncé’s “Run the World.”

Cardi B winning “Favorite Artist – Rap/Hip Hop”: Not only did Cardi beat out the male contenders in this category, including Drake and Post Malone, but she accepted her award as only Cardi can, thanking her daughter for giving her the motivation to “prove people wrong.” She finished it off with a perfect shoutout to Offset: “And where’s my husband? Hey, husband!”

Mariah Carey’s performance: Mariah sang her new song, “With You,” surrounded by a sea of shirtless men on a bed of red sequin tulle. It was a mood.

Camila Cabello…the entire night: When she wasn’t performing, Camila was busy bopping along to all of the other performances, acting like everyone’s hype girl. We needed that energy this week!

Khalid winning his first AMA for “Favorite Male Artist – Soul/R&B”: “I just want to thank my mom first because she’s my biggest inspiration.” Swoon.

All the hype around the midterm elections: From Tracee Ellis Ross wearing an “I am a voter” T-shirt to Billy Eichner and Katherine Hahn reminding the audience that today’s the last day to register in 20 states to Taylor Swift making yet another plea for her fans to vote in November, tonight got political.

Taran Kilam’s reaction to Cardi B’s performance of “I Like It”: I think I speak for everyone when I say: Same, Taran. Same.

J.Lo’s Performance of “Limitless”: Written by Sia for J.Lo’s new film Second Act, this song is the female anthem we need right now.

Taylor Swift’s record-setting wins: By taking home three awards tonight, Taylor has officially won more AMAs than any other female artist. Congrats!

That emotional Aretha tribute: In a perfect celebration of the “Queen of Soul’s” legacy, Gladys Knight led an emotional tribute to her friend, as only a fellow icon can.
