Comedian Nikki Glaser Apologizes to Taylor Swift for Body Shaming Comment

Taylor Swift’s long-anticipated documentary Miss Americana dropped on Netflix Friday, and several moments center around how the pop star has been portrayed in the media. One segment includes a few public figures saying unflattering things about the singer, including comedian Nikki Glaser, who joked about how Swift is “too skinny.” In an Instagram post on Friday, Glaser wrote out a long apology to Swift and explained that her comment was “an example of ‘projection’.”

The post includes a photo of Glaser who explains how big of a Swift fan she is. She also penned how hard it was to watch her joke play out in the film. “I love Taylor Swift. Unfortunately, I am featured in her new documentary as part of a montage of asshats saying mean things about her, which is used to explain why she felt the need to escape from the spotlight for a year,” she wrote. ” It’s insanely ironic because anyone who knows me knows I’m obnoxiously obsessed with her and her music.”

She continued, “I first heard myself in the trailer last week as I watched it alone in bed (as soon as it came out bc I was so excited!) and I was horrified to hear my own voice. The sound bite was from an interview I did 5 years ago and I say in SUCH a shitty tone, ‘she’s too skinny; it bothers me… all of her model friends, and it’s just like, c’mon! This quote should be used as an example of ‘projection’ in PSYCH101 textbooks. If you’re familiar with my ‘work’ at all, you know I talk openly about battling some kind of eating disorder for the past 17 years. I was probably ‘feeling fat’ that day and was jealous. Also, I’ve had people say the same shit about me being too skinny before and know how terrible it feels to hear that when you’re struggling. And I was only bothered by her model friends because I’d like to be her friend and I’m not a model.”

“I really have no need to post this other than to apologize to someone who seriously means SO much to me,” she added.

For Swift, it all seems to be water under the bridge. She commented on Glaser’s post shortly after, saying how grateful she was for her apology. “I appreciate this so much and one of the major themes about the doc is that we have the ability to change our opinions over time, to grow, to learn about ourselves,” she said. “I’m so sorry to hear that you’ve struggled with some of the same things I’ve struggled with. Sending a massive hug.

Selena Gomez: Body Shaming on Social Media ‘Really Messed Me Up’

Selena Gomez has been in a very sharing place lately. First, she released back-to-back singles—“Love You to Lose Me” and “Look at Her Now”—that many fans interpreted as a commentary on her past relationship with Justin Bieber.

Now, she’s opening up about how comments about her weight on social media really made her feel. During an interview on the Giving Back Generation podcast, Gomez said (per Entertainment Tonight), “I experienced [body-shaming] with my weight fluctuation for the first time. I have lupus and deal with kidney issues and high blood pressure, so I deal with a lot of health issues, and for me that’s when I really started noticing more of the body image stuff.”

Gomez went on to explain how a combination of her health issues causes her weight to go up and down. “It’s the medication I have to take for the rest of my life—it depends on even the month, to be honest. So for me, I really noticed when people started attacking me for that,” she said. “In reality, that’s just my truth. I fluctuate. It depends what’s happening in my life.” And she added, those harsh words on social media during that time “got to me big time” and “really messed me up for a bit.”

Famous or not, nobody should have to hear strangers (or friends, for that matter) critiquing their body. Ever. But not to fear, Selena Gomez said she is “very happy with living my life” and she’s trying not to hold ill will against her critics. The singer said the “biggest lesson” she had to learn is that “[when it comes to] the people that have hurt me the most, to forgive them. And to continue to understand and have compassion for people.”

But she’s still not going to let her over 160 million followers on Instagram in on every part of her life.

“I don’t care to expose myself to everyone and hear what they have to say about it.” That seems like a healthy and sound strategy to us.

Chrissy Teigen Had the Best Response to People Shaming Her for Not Wearing a Bra

One more point for Chrissy Teigen in the Chrissy vs. Haters scoreboard (which, I’m sure, Teigen is leading by a million at this point). On Thursday, August 22, she posted a video on Instagram that shows her sliding into a ball pit and grabbing her boobs—something many people are taking as a wink to the critics who had given her a hard time for going braless in a social media post the day before.

Teigen captioned the video, “Whoopsie daisy.”

This video seems to have been taken on the same day as the Instagram post that Teigen posted previously, in which she’s pictured standing open-mouthed and staring at something while wearing a jumpsuit with a low neckline. “What do you think I’m looking at?” she asked her social media followers. Some users used that opportunity to answer with things like, “a bra, girl, get you one.”

As usual, Teigen took the comments in stride and wrote to one user, “Allow me to save you from my titties.”

But even though Teigen made a joke out of the comments, some people jumped to her defense in a more forceful way. “All of these WOMEN commenting on the fact she’s not wearing a bra,” one person wrote. “Y’all are just jealous that you don’t have the confidence to do it too because we all know bras are the worst thing in existence.”

Someone else chimed in to defend how great Teigen looks. “She breastfed two kids and her boobies look bomb AF,” one person wrote, “so why not wear what she wears.”

Still, Teigen clearly doesn’t seem to care about what any bra sticklers have to say—and neither, apparently, does her husband, John Legend. In it, you can hear Legend laughing hysterically as she tumbles into the pit. True couple goals.

In 2018, we may have reached peak body positivity—it’s taken over social media, become the standard for brands, and changed the conversation on size.

That doesn’t mean body shaming isn’t still everywhere, though. Trolls on social media (and IRL), BS body standards and even negative messages we tell ourselves are still alive and well. Let’s face it: it’s hard to feel great about the way you look, 100 percent of the time.

Luckily, celebrities were full of clap backs to body shaming this year. Here are 12 of our favorite moments when celebs got real about body positivity and shut down shaming.

This Conservative Blogger's Chart Shaming Working Moms Predictably Sparks Outrage

A blog post from a conservative Christian mommy blogger is taking over the parenting corner of the Internet, a place that often has more discord than the halls of Congress. Lori Alexander, a.k.a. The Transformed Wife, posted a chart titled “Should Mothers Have Careers?” in which she compared her thoughts on working moms versus stay-at-home moms—and it’s really something.

Alexander is a full-time homemaker who has been married for 39 years and has four grown children and nine grandchildren. Her About section on Facebook reads, “Learning about marriage, raising children, homemaking, and being a godly woman who desires to be transformed into the image of Christ!”

In the flowchart, she directly compares and contrasts her perception of the lives of working and stay-at-home moms. For example, in the SAHM column she writes of dinnertime, “Dinner is from scratch, nutritious, and delicious” whereas with working moms, “Dinner is usually fast food or microwaved.” She also says working moms lack time for intimacy and that their lives are “falling apart,” whereas SAHMs spend weekends at the beach and are totally fulfilled.

It’s easy to see why people are angry—and the ire coming from both sides of the mommy aisle. (Not to mention that staying at home is not a financial option for many families.) “Motherhood is not a competition. Moms in both groups have challenges to face that are not more important than the other,” wrote one commenter on the Facebook post. “Also, welcome to 2018 where dads are like, fathers and stuff now, who also help with domestic duties such as cooking, cleaning and! (Are you ready for this? Clutch your pearls) help take care of the children. ?” Another said, “I have been a stay-at-home and work-from-home mom for the last 16+ years. This chart is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen in my life.”

“Staying home with a three-year-old makes me feel like more of a failure as a mother than working out of my house EVER did! Also, if this stay at home mom is resting when the children do, when is she preparing that from scratch meal and cleaning so she is free to spend weekends at the beach?” another commenter remarked.

People are Twitter were equally upset.

When Glamour reached out to Alexander, she said she did not intend to shame working mothers but “I simply want them to ponder their life paths.” She explained that she is “teaching Christian women biblical motherhood according to Titus 2:3–5 in the Bible, where God commands older women to teach younger women to be ‘keepers at home.'”

“No one can take the place of a mother in a child’s life. I was a career woman for the first two years of my first child’s life, and I could totally relate to the left side of the flowchart,” she told us. “I knew I was the one that was supposed to be at home raising my own children. Most women aren’t even told that this is good! Homemakers are embarrassed when asked what they do. What can be more important than raising the next generation?”

As for the viral backlash, Alexander says she’s had it since she started writing in 2011 and won’t let it “steal her joy.”

“I teach what I am called to teach and leave the results in the Lord’s hands.”

Jessica Simpson Just Accused Natalie Portman of ‘Shaming’ Her

Natalie Portman made a comment about Jessica Simpson in a new interview with USA Today that caught the “With You” singer’s attention. “I remember being a teenager, and there was Jessica Simpson on the cover of a magazine saying ‘I’m a virgin’ while wearing a bikini, and I was confused. Like, I don’t know what this is trying to tell me as a woman, as a girl,” she said.

The quote is from a larger story about Portman’s new movie Vox Lux, in which she plays a troubled pop star staging a career comeback. She was specifically referring to the “virgin/vixen” paradigm that several female singers embodied in the early-aughts, including Simpson, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera.

Simpson took the narrative back on Twitter, though, writing that she was “disappointed” in Portman’s words. “As public figures, we both know our image is not totally in our control at all times, and that the industry we work in often tries to define us and box us in,” she tweeted. “However, I was taught to be myself and honor the different ways all women express themselves, which is why I believed then – and I believe now – that being sexy in a bikini and being proud of my body are not synonymous with having sex.” (Simpson says the photo Portman is referring to was taken in 1999 when she was still a virgin.)

She continued, ” I have always embraced being a role model to all women to let them know that they can look however they want, wear whatever they want and have sex or not have sex with whomever they want. The power lies within us as individuals. I have made it my practice to not shame other women for their choices. In this era of Time’s Up and all the great work you have done for women, I encourage you to do the same.”

Portman responded to Simpson on Instagram Wednesday afternoon (December 5). “Thank you for your words,” she wrote. “I completely agree with you that a woman should be allowed to dress however she likes and behave however she likes and not be judged. I only meant to say I was confused – as a girl coming of age in the public eye around the same time – by the media’s mixed messages about how girls and women were supposed to behave. I didn’t mean to shame, and I’m sorry for any hurt my words may have caused. I have nothing but respect for your talent and your voice that you use to encourage and empower women all over the globe.”
