Comedian Nikki Glaser Apologizes to Taylor Swift for Body Shaming Comment

Taylor Swift’s long-anticipated documentary Miss Americana dropped on Netflix Friday, and several moments center around how the pop star has been portrayed in the media. One segment includes a few public figures saying unflattering things about the singer, including comedian Nikki Glaser, who joked about how Swift is “too skinny.” In an Instagram post on Friday, Glaser wrote out a long apology to Swift and explained that her comment was “an example of ‘projection’.”

The post includes a photo of Glaser who explains how big of a Swift fan she is. She also penned how hard it was to watch her joke play out in the film. “I love Taylor Swift. Unfortunately, I am featured in her new documentary as part of a montage of asshats saying mean things about her, which is used to explain why she felt the need to escape from the spotlight for a year,” she wrote. ” It’s insanely ironic because anyone who knows me knows I’m obnoxiously obsessed with her and her music.”

She continued, “I first heard myself in the trailer last week as I watched it alone in bed (as soon as it came out bc I was so excited!) and I was horrified to hear my own voice. The sound bite was from an interview I did 5 years ago and I say in SUCH a shitty tone, ‘she’s too skinny; it bothers me… all of her model friends, and it’s just like, c’mon! This quote should be used as an example of ‘projection’ in PSYCH101 textbooks. If you’re familiar with my ‘work’ at all, you know I talk openly about battling some kind of eating disorder for the past 17 years. I was probably ‘feeling fat’ that day and was jealous. Also, I’ve had people say the same shit about me being too skinny before and know how terrible it feels to hear that when you’re struggling. And I was only bothered by her model friends because I’d like to be her friend and I’m not a model.”

“I really have no need to post this other than to apologize to someone who seriously means SO much to me,” she added.

For Swift, it all seems to be water under the bridge. She commented on Glaser’s post shortly after, saying how grateful she was for her apology. “I appreciate this so much and one of the major themes about the doc is that we have the ability to change our opinions over time, to grow, to learn about ourselves,” she said. “I’m so sorry to hear that you’ve struggled with some of the same things I’ve struggled with. Sending a massive hug.

Camila Cabello Apologizes for Her ‘Embarrassingly Ignorant’ Social Media Posts

Once you post something on the internet, it’s never really gone—no matter how long ago you deleted it. Right now, Camila Cabello is finding out what happens when those posts resurface.

Here’s what happened, in case you don’t spend all your free time on the socials. A Twitter user named @motivatefenty posted a thread with a number of screenshots from (what is believed to be) Cabello’s old Tumblr account that show her using racially insensitive language and reblogging a number of racist or xenophobic tropes and images.

The 22-year-old singer then posted an apology to Twitter and Instagram Stories on Wednesday, December 18. “When I was younger, I used language that I’m deeply ashamed of and will regret forever,” she writes. “I was uneducated and ignorant and once I became aware of the history and the weight and the true meaning behind this horrible language, I was deeply embarrassed I ever used it.”

“I apologized then and I apologize now,” Cabello continues. ““I would never intentionally hurt anyone and I regret it from the bottom of my heart. As much as I wish I could, I can’t go back in time and change things I said in the past. But once you know better, you do better and that’s all I can do.”

She adds that she has grown and changed since the time when she was posting those things to Tumblr and now uses her platforms “to speak out about injustice and inequality.”

“I’m 22 now, I’m an adult and I’ve grown and learned and am conscious and aware of the history and the pain it carries in a way I wasn’t before,” she says. “Those mistakes don’t represent the person I am or a person I’ve ever been. I only stand and have ever stood for love and inclusivity, and my heart has never, even then, had any ounce of hate or divisiveness.”

Hallmark Apologizes After Backlash for Pulling an Ad That Featured Two Brides Kissing

This past weekend, there was a lot of controversy around the Hallmark Channel—right in the middle of the network’s jam-packed “Countdown to Christmas” season.

In case you missed it, here’s what went down. Zola, a wedding planning website, aired a number of ads on the channel including some that featured same-sex couples. The conservative group One Million Moms took issue with a particular ad featuring two brides (briefly) kissing and started a petition to have it removed. “The Hallmark Channel has always been known for its family friendly movies. Even its commercials are usually safe for family viewing. But unfortunately, that is not the case anymore,” the petition reads. “Recently, One Million Moms received concerns about Hallmark airing a commercial from Zola.com in which two lesbians are shown kissing at the end of their wedding ceremony. Similar concerns from regular viewers are posted on an online complaint board for the Hallmark Channel.”

[embedded content]

Initially, Hallmark decided to pull four of the six ads from the Zola campaign. “The decision not to air overt public displays of affection in our sponsored advertisement, regardless of the participants, is in line with our current policy, which includes not featuring political advertisements, offensive language, R-rated movie content and many other categories,” a Hallmark spokesman told the New York Times on Friday, December 13. However, one ad that featured a bride and groom kissing was not pulled.

The online backlash to this was swift.

Now, Hallmark reps have announced that the network is reversing the decision. “We are truly sorry for the hurt and disappointment this has caused,” Hallmark CEO Mike Perry said in a statement. “Across our brand, we will continue to look for ways to be more inclusive and celebrate our differences.” He also said “Hallmark Channel will be reaching out to Zola to reestablish our partnership and reinstate the commercials.”

Chrissy Teigen Apologizes for ‘Tone Deaf and Icky’ Tweet About Her Mom's Spending

Chrissy Teigen, prolific tweeter and all-around national treasure, is never afraid to say what’s on her mind—even if that means she makes a mistake from time to time. She’s also not afraid to own said mistakes and apologize when she thinks it’s necessary, which she just did after a recent tweet didn’t go over so well with some of her fans.

Here’s what went down. Teigen tweeted what she meant to be a joke about her mom, writing, “My mom treats her air pods like they’re disposable. buys a few a month. she says they would be easier to not lose if they had….a cord.”

Some fans were upset at what they perceived as a comment that flaunted Teigen’s wealth and privilege. “Me, reading this after spending the night googling selling plasma. Why so many people follow these out of touch rich people is beyond me. And let’s not even get into the environmental implications of this,” one person commented. “Cool. I can’t afford to see the heart specialist my primary told me I need to see,” another tweeted. Another said simply, “Your family needs higher taxes.”

Teigen, unlike some celebrities, did not go on the defensive and instead addressed the feedback in a series of tweets. “Oh man I haven’t checked my mentions for a bit and I didn’t realize how many people were super pissed off about this. It was meant as a joke (and exaggeration) about how my mom doesn’t realize air pods are with a cord are headphones but it came across as super tone deaf and icky,” she wrote.

“I promise I will not always say the right thing in the right way but I also promise I hate disappointing or pissing you guys off,” she continued. “I’m sorry and I will do better to not be such an asshole.”

She even responded directly to some fans.-

Chrissy Teigen’s mentions are now filled with people either thanking Teigen for addressing the issue and those who thought it was funny in the first place. I guess that’s what amounts to a successful day on Twitter in 2019.

Roseanne Barr Apologizes for Her Racist Tweets in a New Interview

Roseanne Barr, who starred in ‘90s sitcom Roseanne and this year’s subsequent, short-lived revival on ABC, has apologized for the racist Twitter rant that eventually lead to the revival’s cancellation.

On May 29, she posted a since-deleted tweet that said, “Muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby= vj.” It reportedly referred to an online claim that the CIA spied on French presidential candidates, with “vj” referring to Valerie Jarrett, a former Obama aide. (In the aftermath of the cancellation, Jarrett would call the tweet a “teaching moment.”)

In the subsequent days, ABC cancelled the Roseanne revival—which brought in huge ratings to the network—and announced The Connors, its spinoff, in which Barr will have no financial or creative involvement.

In her first interview since the tweet, Barr apologized for her words on Rabbi Shmuley Boteach’s podcast at Stand Up NY. According to the New York Daily News, the interview actually happened two days after the initial tweets in May, but the rabbi—a friend of Roseanne—waited to release the audio until early this morning.

“I’m a lot of things. I’m a loudmouth and all that stuff, but I’m not stupid, for God’s sake, and I never would have wittingly called any black person … say they are a monkey,” she said, at times crying during the 30-minute long podcast. “I never would do that! And I didn’t do that. And if people think that I did that it just kills me. I didn’t do that, although they think I did. And if they do think that I am so sorry that I- ya know, it was so unclear and stupid. I’m very sorry but I don’t think that, I never would do that.”

“Of course, no I don’t excuse it,” she said, saying again during the interview that she was on Ambien when she tweeted. “I horribly regret it, are you kidding? I’ve lost everything. And I regretted it before I lost everything and I said to God, ‘I am willing to accept whatever consequences this brings because I know I’ve done wrong.’ I’m willing to accept what the consequences are. And, I do. And I have.”

Police Department Apologizes for Its Handling of Larry Nassar Allegations: 'We Wish We Had This One Back.'

While court is adjourned until tomorrow in the Eaton County sentencing of former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, but there is still news breaking around the case. The local police in Meridian Township convened a press conference Thursday afternoon apologize for their initial handling of allegations against Nassar by Brianne Randall-Gay in 2004.

Randall-Gay, then 17, filed a sexual assault complaint to the local police that claimed Nassar touched her breast and vagina for several minutes during a visit that was meant to be an exam about her scoliosis but it was never prosecuted. Per a newly released police report, a few interviews were conducted but the lead detective concluded—after speaking to Nassar—that the reported abuse was a legitimate medical procedure. According to Deadspin, there is no indication that the police contacted other medical professionals for an opinion, nor did they contact Children’s Protective Services. Deadspin also called Sgt. Al Spencer, who reportedly oversaw the case, and he told them, “To be honest with you, I don’t recall the case at all. I don’t have any memory of it.” McCready is still on the force, while Spencer is retired.

During the emotional press conference, Meridian Township manager Frank Walsh and Chief of Police Dave Hall publicly apologized to Randall-Gay, who participated via Skype from Seattle. Walsh and Hall both recounted the emotional phone call they made to Randall-Gay (and her family) to apologize for the mishandling of her case back in 2004. They offered to fly to Seattle to apologize in person and when she let them know she had decided to come to read an impact statement at Nassar’s sentencing, they offered to pay for her ticket. They were also in the courtroom that day. Both expressed gratitude for the grace that Randall-Gay had shown them in accepting their apology and vowed to make it a mission to not let this happen again.

To that point, Chief Hall outlined three initiatives for the township to undertake. First, they will be instituting new training procedures for all of their officers and civilian staff, bringing in experts from outside the force to conduct said training. Randall-Gay has also agreed to film a video about her own experience for the officers to learn from. The second initiative is to look back at all criminal sexual conduct reports (CSCs) from 2000 to the present day to make sure nothing has been missed. Hall confirmed that no other medical expert was consulted in Randall-Gay’s case and that there is no reason to believe that the prosecutor’s office was ever made aware of the case.

“We wish we had this one back,” said Hall. “We want to do better.” From this point forward, the chief will now sign off on all CSC reports. And finally, Randall-Gay herself will be helping to develop a community-wide outreach program to young people understand criminal sexual conduct and how to report it to the authorities.

Randall-Gay said that the apology has helped her further process her trauma. “It will not erase the pain I suffered, but it was therapeutic.” She also vowed to continue to work toward systemic change, “I fight today […] so the next little girl won’t have to suffer for 14 years.” It is incredibly powerful, even as a viewer, to watch people own their mistakes and try to make changes that will better their community. Let’s hope others follow suit. As Walsh said, “We can’t rewind the tape, but we can have an effect on the tape moving forward.”
