A ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ Star Is Working as a Nurse on the Coronavirus Front Lines

You may remember Harper Finkle from Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place, Alex’s (Selena Gomez’s) smart best friend who’d often act as the witch’s conscience. It turns out the actor behind Harper, Jennifer Stone, also has a heart of gold. Stone, who grew up to become a nurse, is now preparing to save lives on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic.

After appearing on the Wizards of Waverly Place series finale in 2012 and some additional projects, Stone took a break from acting to go to college. Right before this, she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. “More than learning the semantics of beta-cells and autoimmune disorders, I wanted to understand my body and the impact of Type 1,” she said in a 2016 interview with Beyond Type 1, a nonprofit organization that provides resources to those living with diabetes. So she switched from her psychology major to nursing.

Last year she shared an Instagram post celebrating receiving her degree. “It’s been a long road of blood (mostly other people’s), sweat, and tears (those were mine), but I can finally call myself a nursing grad,” she wrote.

And now she says she’s “ready to join” those on the front lines of the fight against COVID-19.

“A very good friend of mine (@maiarawalsh ) pointed out to me that today is #worldhealthday. It is also the day I went from a volunteer, then a student nurse, and now an RN resident,” she wrote in a new post showing off her new resident badge.

She continued, “I just hope to live up to all of the amazing healthcare providers on the front lines now as I get ready to join them. #worldhealthorganization #supportnurses #westayhereforyou❤️pleasestayhomeforus #covid2020.”

After receiving a ton of positive feedback on her post (including some from WOWP fans, of course), Stone shared another image on Wednesday, April 8, encouraging her followers to wear nonsurgical masks like she does when she’s not working. “I’m wearing a mask to flatten the curve,” she wrote in the caption. “You can’t see me smiling out of gratitude for hitting 300,000 followers! Thank you guys for all of your love and support.”

Stay home for Harper!

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Are ‘No Longer Working Members of the Royal Family’

After days of negotiations, the royal family has decided what’s next for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. The verdict? They are indeed stepping down from their senior royal positions and are “no longer working members of the royal family.”

Sussex Royal, the official Instagram account of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, released a written statement from Queen Elizabeth on Saturday, January 18. In it, Queen Elizabeth says that, “I am pleased that together we have found a constructive and supportive way forward for my grandson and his family.”

She continues, “I recognise the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life. I want to thank them for all their dedicated work across this country, the Commonwealth, and beyond, and am particularly proud of how Meghan has so quickly become one of our family.”

The details for Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s new arrangement were outlined in a separate statement from Buckingham Palace. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will still be referred to as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, but they will no longer use “HRH” titles. The couple are officially no longer working members of the royal family and can no longer formally represent the Queen. However, the couple assures that “everything they do will continue to uphold the values of Her Majesty.”

Financial arrangements were also shared in Buckingham Palace’s statement. The couple will repay the taxpayer money that contributed to the refurbishment of their royal residence, Frogmore Cottage. They’ll also stop receiving public funds for royal duties.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s new arrangement will go into effect sometime this spring, per the statement from Buckingham Palace. “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are grateful to Her Majesty and the Royal Family for their ongoing support as they embark on the next chapter of their lives.”

This story is developing, but we’ll continue to update this post with details.

Kate Middleton Secretly Spent Two Days Working in a Major London Hospital's Maternity Ward

Kate Middleton spent two days working on a a top-secret project—and now, we finally know what she’s been up to.

According to People, the Duchess of Cambridge quietly got some work experience at a maternity ward in one of London’s major hospitals this week, where she reportedly shadowed midwives and other professionals to better educate herself about children’s early years of development.

Sources also told Hello! Magazine that the royal mom of three “divided her time on the unit, visiting the antenatal, postnatal and labour wards.”

The work was subtly mentioned by Kensington Palace as it was included in the Court Circular on November 28, which reveals the activities the royals have completed each week:

“The Duchess of Cambridge, Joint Patron, the Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, today completed two days with Kingston Hospital Maternity Unit in London.”

No other details have been released, but it comes as no surprise that the duchess wanted to lend a helping hand at the hospital’s maternity ward since early childhood care is something Middleton has devoted a lot of her royal work to over the years. In May, she organized a group to learn about child welfare so that she could be more aware of the challenges both parents and caregivers deal with every day. She also later thanked them for their work, support, and advice.

“Through our work, you have reaffirmed my belief of just how timely it is to focus on what happens in the early years of life, and how pivotal a stage of life this is for a child’s future,” Middleton said at the time.

“I hope my long-term commitment to working in the early years will help make a difference over a generational timescale,” she added. “Your thoughts and advice will continue to be hugely valuable as I shape my thinking for the years ahead.”

Then, in November, Middleton opened a new children’s hospice, as part of her Early Years project. She also spent time with the young patients who have life-threatening conditions.

Mandy Moore Is Working on a New TV Show Based on Her Life

Long before Mandy Moore was yanking at our heartstrings and racking up Emmy nominations as Rebecca Pearson on This Is Us, she was one of the biggest popstars of the early aughts. If her first single “Candy” hasn’t been stuck in your head for the past two decades, there’s a nostalgia-fueled new show coming to reacquaint us with Moore’s early career on the pop charts.

Audiences will get to relive an interpretation of Moore’s meteoric rise to fame with 90’s Popstar, a TV show coming to ABC. Deadline reports that the show, which has a pilot commitment, will follow a plot loosely based on Mandy Moore’s early stardom. In it, a Florida teen becomes a pop singer seemingly overnight—leaving her and her family to navigate a wild new reality.

The show’s teen singer is inspired by Moore, who signed a recording deal with Empire Records in 1999, when she was just 15 years old. You know the rest of Moore’s story: Her first album, So Real, went platinum, and she reached her first Billboard Top 30 Single with 2000’s “I Wanna Be With You.” Despite her connection to the forthcoming show’s source material, Moore reportedly won’t be playing any of the characters on the show. Instead, she’ll be behind the camera as an executive producer.

One look at the names joining Mandy Moore on 90’s Popstar, and you know this show is going to get emotional. The script is being written by Amanda Lasher, who’s hailed over TV successes including The Bold Type, Gossip Girl, and Riverdale. The rest of the behind-the-scenes team for 90’s Popstar includes This Is US showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, who’ll join Moore as executive producers.

Casting announcements and an expected air date haven’t been shared for the pop stardom vehicle quite yet. But with Moore lending a hand, it’s safe to say her new show is going to be good. Until the new show airs, Moore will be busy with This Is Us. NBC announced in May that it ordered three more seasons of Moore’s popular drama.

Kirsten Dunst Made Sure Her New Series Was Realistic About Working Mothers

In fact, she says she was so physically drained in the months following Ennis’s birth that she felt like she could barely hold a conversation, let alone be a series lead. “I was like, ‘I don’t even have time to take showers anymore, so how am I going to function on a set?’”

However, the show eventually came together and Dunst decided it was too good a role to pass up. And so she leaned on her producing partners. “Everyone goes back to work, and I realized that sometimes it’s just starting something for you to realize that you can do it,” she says. “But it’s scary until you actually start.”

Dunst credits her mother-in-law and close friends for helping with child care while she was working long hours on set. “You manage it, and people step in and help you. It’s just so important to ask for that help.”

Patti Perret/Sony/SHOWTIME

Dunst had a support system behind the scenes, but that wasn’t the case for her character, Krystal, a woman who is mostly on her own with a young daughter. Dunst wanted to show the difficulties of being a working parent, which is why she wanted to have a child in as many scenes as possible. “Unless the next-door neighbor is watching her or she gets some kind of help, Krystal would always have a baby with her,” she explains. “That’s just her reality, and she’s doing everything she can to survive.” When long working hours on set prevented a real-life baby from being available, Dunst relied on a doll or the presence of a stroller.

Now, with the series finally set to premiere on Sunday, August 25, Dunst is glad she didn’t pass on the opportunity. “I feel like playing Krystal allowed me to let a lot of that rage out that we don’t usually get to express in our everyday lives,” she explains. “It was a very cathartic experience to play someone that didn’t care that much about what others think. The older you get, the less you worry about what everybody else is doing.”
