Jason Derulo Talks Cats, That Instagram Controversy, and the Secret to a Good Thirst Trap

On the beach in a foreign country. It was incredible and risky. The nerves add to thrill.

Have you ever ghosted someone?

What is this new term that people have been saying?

Ghosting—basically, it’s going on a few dates with someone, maybe two or more, and then you suddenly stop texting or calling them. You disappear, like a ghost. Has that happened to you, or have you done it to others?

Both. Both have happened. Mostly she’s done it to me because she has a boyfriend, she’s had a situation. From my standpoint, if you just realize somebody’s not really worth your time, I don’t think you should continue to waste your time. But if someone is asking for an explanation, I would give it to them. I wouldn’t just freeze them out and not explain anything.

What’s your favorite movie or TV love scene? Or sexiest music video?

“Promise” by Ciara. I think that song and video is super sexy.

What’s the sexiest thing about yourself?

I’m trying to figure out, like, should I make it physical or should I make it mental?

You could say one of each.

I think the sexiest thing about me is how I treat women. I think women should be treated like queens. So how I treat them when I’m actually in a relationship: like a queen.

What does that entail?

I think it entails being a romantic. Finding out what it is that they like, what it is they love to do, what makes them feel loved.

You’re alone in bed, about to fall asleep: What are you thinking about?

Heh. Um, I’m thinking of what my mindset is. My mindset is so different than it used to be. I used to think I’d have a situation by now where I’d be married with a couple of kids. But my mindset is so different now, I don’t see that in the near future. I feel surprised that my mindset’s changed so drastically. If you’d asked me five years ago, I would never in a million years think that I would be here. But I feel good, I feel happy in my skin. I feel like you have to learn to love yourself before you can love anyone else. I’ve been doing that, and it’s been wonderful.

Tell me about your new album 2Sides.

I released the first half, and I’m excited. It’s been four years since I’ve released new music, and I’m excited to get the music out and start putting the music videos out and whatnot.

Do you think your music makes a good sex playlist?

Definitely. I think “Diamonds” works really well for that.

Speaking of your songs, what’s a tip you would give someone who’s trying to work on their dirty talk?

I think it’s important to be free with your words but don’t go too far. Don’t get weird. Unless you know that person is into that. You should keep it in the wheelhouse of who your partner is. You have to know who your partner is! But you also have to be free and express what you want to express. It can be the greatest thing in the world to say the thing you want to say and not hold it inside. But the most important thing is learning your partner, learning what they want to hear.

Jason Lewis Is So Much More Than ‘That Guy’ from Sex and the City

Have you ever ghosted someone?

Oh yeah, totally ghosted people long before the term was available. I don’t think that’s always a terrible thing. I think sometimes as we learn the conversations we want to find ourselves in, we realize sometimes that we’re in conversations that are horrible for us and the other person. So yeah, I’ve walked away with no regrets in many relationships. I don’t think you should ever do that with a relationship of substance, but sometimes people won’t let you change the dynamics and you have to walk away.

Who was your first celebrity crush?

Jane Seymour in Somewhere in Time with Christopher Reeve. Oh my God, I wanted to travel through time for her.

Do you believe in astrology?

I don’t really practice it, but every time somebody puts it in front of my face it seems pretty fucking accurate. I’ll usually say, “Oh wow, that’s weird how well you’ve pegged me.” I am a Cancer with a Leo rising and a Leo moon.

Wait, you know your moon but don’t follow astrology?

I definitely have been paying attention more over the last few years. The only reason I know my moon is because years ago a girl I was dating—who was really toxic for me while I was in a broken space—decided to have my full charts done. My dog didn’t like her and chewed that book up within an hour of my possession of it. She never did anything like that before. And it’s like, “You want me to get rid of her, don’t you, sweetheart?” So that was about all the information I downloaded from it.

Do you find it to be accurate?

It is. I am, on the surface of things, one of the most extroverted people—but if I don’t get my alone time, all you people be damned. I’m imbalanced, so I need both things. I very much appear as an extrovert, but I have a lot of introverted tendencies. Ask my girlfriend.

See Every Single Look in Jason Wu's Holiday Collection for Kohl's

Jason Wu has become a master of collaboration. Following successful capsules with Eloquii and Target, the designer known for dressing Michelle Obama and Meghan Markle (among dozens of other celebrities) is releasing one of his most affordable collections to date.

In May, it was announced that he would design a holiday collection of Kohl’s, the latest capital-f Fashion name to join the retailer’s roster of private-label brands. “What we really wanted to do was create a collection that’s elevated and looks very special,” he tells Glamour of JW Jason Wu. “The idea was to provide the Kohl’s customer—or any customer, for that matter—with a collection that has a timeless quality to it.”

These pieces are meant to “stand the test of time,” he says, not speak to the specific trends of one season. Everything’s under $100, and available in sizes XS to XXL (roughly sizes 0 to 18, according to Kohl’s size chart).

In recent years, Wu has diversified his business not just by expanding his sizes (with Eloquii and 11 Honoré) and price point (with Target, and now Kohl’s), but through partnerships beyond the scope of fashion: He’s designed furniture, created a fragrance.

“The overall theme [of my work] is really timelessness, refinement, and sophistication—that’s something everybody can appreciate,” he says. “We don’t really care about trends—we care about things that make women feel beautiful.”

Regardless of the medium he’s working in, you’ll recognize a few recurring notes in the design. “I’m always very influenced by florals, and that’s really apparent here,” he says of this Kohl’s collection. (The reason? His dad is an avid gardener.) “You can see a lot of my DNA in here. Never met a dot I didn’t love. It’s about timeless beauty and femininity; great fabrics and great detail. At the same time, there’s really a great range for everyone, from things you can wear to work to a little fur coverup.”

This particular collection was conceptualized, developed, and produced in less than a year (pretty quick turnaround for a collaboration of this scale)—a result of Wu himself communicating directly with the Kohl’s team. He looked at gaps in the retailer’s inventory, and saw an opportunity to introduce more occasionwear. He pivoted accordingly.

The best feedback he got, though, didn’t come from anyone at Kohl’s HQ—rather, it was the result of visiting an actual Kohl’s in Indianapolis. “If you don’t go to the store, the data doesn’t really amount to anything,” he says. “I’m really good at that, weirdly. People are surprised.” (So, if you ever run into Wu among the racks at your local big-box store… you now know why.)

“Our mission is to make really sophisticated, refined feminine clothes,” Wu says. “Listen, I’m not the first designer to do different price points. But I do feel we do it in a way that’s modern. We treat everything the same: the way it’s shot, the way it’s styled, the way we considered it. It’s modern to think about the market as a whole, not just in our little bubble. Sometimes, we say we’re ‘fashion designers,’ but we really don’t dress most people. I want to dress more people.”

Every Single Look From Jason Wu's Plus-Size Collaboration With Eloquii

All it took was a single sketch—of a long-sleeved, sweetheart-necked LBD—to get shoppers excited about Eloquii‘s latest designer collaboration, with none other than Jason Wu.

“We didn’t show anything, and people were going crazy,” Wu says. “I mean, I expected that people would be happy about it, but the over-the-top excitement has been so encouraging… It’s great to feel appreciated for your designs and to have a community that really embraces what you do.” Wu came into Eloquii through a personal connection—one of his close friends is a part owner of the company. “When they asked me, I just felt like, Why not? It was a great opportunity,” he says.

The designer has sold pieces on the luxury retailer 11 Honoré, but Wu had never created a full plus-sized collection. And that was a draw for Eloquii: “It’s interesting to see them—like even first meeting Jason, wondering why he hadn’t and what his hang-ups were about it… It’s great to see that evolution from somebody thinking, ‘Oh, you know, I’ve wanted to do this, I just was afraid to do it because I didn’t know how,’ and then seeing how relatively easy it is and how wonderful the results in terms of how the customer feels about it,” Jodi Arnold, the retailer’s creative director, explains. “We’re interested in anyone who wants to give this customer more options—and especially someone at this designer level.. We have a polished and feminine customer, and we love that that’s kind of what [Jason Wu] does as well.”

“This is something that really opens up new avenues for me, and it’s something that I’ve learned a lot from in these few months of working on this collection,” Wu says. It went beyond learning the intricacies of fit, and touching on what plus-sized shoppers want: “In that way, it was effortless because that’s also my goal, to make women look amazing.”

Eloquii x Jason Wu is timed to the holidays, which means plenty of party dressing options—from sequined dresses (“we know our customer always loves sequins—anything that’s really blingy,” notes Arnold) to tuxedo suiting, all available in sizes 14 to 28. “I wanted [the collection] to exude glamour, sophistication, and femininity,” Wu explains. According to Arnold, the designer came to Eloquii with a specific image as inspiration: the June 2011 issue of Vogue Italia featuring Tara Lynn, Robyn Lawley, and Candice Huffine—the first time the magazine features plus-sized models on its cover. She notes that the team “[has] always found that [the customer” really is starved for occasion dressing—we realized this a couple of years ago when we started a black tie collection,” so this partnership helps fill that void. Of the sweetheart necklines and formfitting dresses seen throughout the capsule, Wu says: “I wanted a collection that enhances, not hides [the body.] That’s really what the hallmark of Jason is about, in any size.”

Finally, after much hype and anticipation, you can see—and shop!—every single look from the collaboration today. Click through for all the holiday dressing you could ever want or need, courtesy of Eloquii x Jason Wu.

Eloquii Is Collaborating With Jason Wu on a Fall 2018 Collection

Over the past few years, plus-size retailer Eloquii has tapped brands like Stone Fox Bridal and Reese Witherspoon’s Draper James as design collaborators, to introduce their popular styles to a broader, size 14-and-up audience. And for Fall 2018, it’s adding another impressive name to its roster, and it’s most high-fashion partner to date: Jason Wu.

Wu is a favorite of celebrities like Karlie Kloss, Diane Kruger, and Lily Aldridge. The Taiwanese-Canadian designer, perhaps best known for his evening wear, gained worldwide recognition for dressing First Lady Michelle Obama for the 2009 Inauguration Ball, and has even outfitted our very own American Duchess.) This collaboration would mark his first dedicated plus-size collection.

PHOTO: Don Arnold

“We love Jason Wu’s dedication to designing beautiful clothes for women that celebrate their strength and sensuality,” Jodi Arnold, Eloquii’s creative director, tells Glamour. “With this collection, the Jason Wu brand brings glamorous sensibility paired with their distinctive feminine design style. Jason has always been dedicated to designing beautiful clothing for women that celebrates their form, so working with Jason to bring his aesthetic to our customer has been an exciting experience.”

Of Eloquii’s designer collaborations, Arnold explains that the retailer “always [looks] to continue to provide innovative fashion for our customer and have an understanding that style speaks to multiple aesthetics to which we like to reflect through our partnerships and range of collections. We could not be more excited to bring his aesthetic to our customer.”

Not much information about Eloquii x Jason Wu is available—only that it’s set to be released some time this fall. The retailer did release a 15-second teaser, which shows the designer sketching what’s presumably a look from the capsule: a formfitting, long-sleeved back dress with a sweetheart neckline. Interested parties can sign up for updates on the collaboration on Eloquii’s website.

Though Wu hasn’t issued a comment on this collection or his plans to expand the sizing of his namesake line, these types of collaborations have proven to be a first step for some designers towards growing their own offerings: Lane Bryant partnered with Christian Siriano in 2016 and Prabal Gurung in 2017—and both designers have since launched extended sizes in their main lines and cast body-diverse models in their runway shows. (In June, Siriano said adding plus sizes tripled his business.) Here’s hoping to see more collections like this from beloved industry figures, like Wu.

Is Jason Tartick the Next Bachelor?

If Twitter has anything to say about it, then America should get ready to meet its next Bachelor: Jason Tartick. Yes, the Buffalo native with the slicked-back hair just positioned himself as a front-runner for the next installment of the ABC reality show.

To recap—spoilers ahead—the corporate banker was sent home before the fantasy suite on last night’s episode of The Bachelorette when Becca realized that she couldn’t see a future with him. Of course, this came after Jason repeatedly said that he found his best friend, his partner, and hopefully his fiancee in Becca. Oof. Even a detailed scrapbook that Jason made to document every rose, kiss, and hair product wasn’t enough to get her to change his mind. (Note to Jason: It’s fine, really. You’re going to find someone that will make you a beautiful scrapbook in return one day).

But in the two months since Jason and Becca said their goodbyes in Thailand, how’s the 29-year-old doing now? And would he even want to be the next Bachelor after getting his heart broken on national TV? Following last night’s emotional episode, we sat down with Jason to find out all that and more.

Now that you’ve seen last night’s episode, do you still have questions about why things didn’t work out between you and Becca?

Jason Tartick: I think I have the closure I need from her and where she’s at and where I’m at. She’s taught me a lot about myself and that has put me in a better position to find what I’m looking for. So not only do I feel like I have that closure, but I also am very grateful for what she did for me as a person, and the position she’s put me in for what’s next.

Speaking of what’s next, would consider being the next Bachelor if asked?

Jason: Yeah. The experience is incredible. The producers, the relationships with the cast, the production…it exceeded everything I could have asked for, and because of that I would be more than open if that opportunity presented itself.

And if you’re not the next Bachelor, you could totally play Milo Ventimiglia’s younger brother on This Is Us.

Jason: [Laughs] There you go! I’ve gotten that a lot!

Back to your show though, was it any consolation that Becca said you were the best kisser?

Jason: [Laughs] It doesn’t hurt!

Let’s talk about the memory book that you made for Becca. Did you really put this together throughout the entire season? Or did a producer do it for you?

Jason: Yes, I did it all, and I did it early on when we started sharing memories. Because there’s so much emotion going on, it was the one way for me to channel my energy with what we had. When I was struggling or going through tough times, I would go back to it and make notes after every single date. I was fortunate enough to have a producer who would take pictures and print them off for me. So it was something that I made throughout the journey and was preparing to give it to her that night [of the fantasy suites date], but unfortunately, I wasn’t in a position to do so. Still, I wanted to make sure she had it. Even though she’s on her way to finding happiness [with someone else], I still think there’s something special we can take away [from our time together].

Was there any hesitation giving it to her once she broke your heart? Like, ‘You broke my heart, but here, remember all the lovely times!”

Jason: [Laughs] I understand it’s something difficult to comprehend and deal with it, but honestly it gave me more reason to share it because I think it really…I’ve talked a lot and we had a physical connection, but this was a true example of how much I really cared, and I’m really glad I did.

Have you done that for other girlfriends in the past?

Jason: No. Never. This is a first for me.

Well, guess what, now you’re going to have to.

Jason: Now it’s a benchmark. I’m the photo book guy!

All in all, how did this experience change you?

Jason: There were no distractions…no internet, no phone, no TV, so we all really developed strong relationships with each other. I spent more time with these guys than I’ve spent with my best friends over the last five years, cumulatively. You start to really dig deep and talk about family and friends and exes and things that have made those people who they are today. I just think that the social climate of it, to really dig deep within yourself when [normally] we’re in a culture that’s so distracted by everything else, it was honestly refreshing and a great take away. Now I have dark days with my phone where I won’t touch my phone, so it’s been a good take away.
