Emma Watson Weighed in on That Taylor Swift-Scooter Braun Controversy


Emma Watson is the latest celebrity to comment on Taylor Swift‘s legal situation with Big Machine’s Scooter Braun.

During an interview with Variety at the New York premiere of Little Women, the actor said the pop star’s current ownership battle over her music very much reminds her of Saoirse Ronan’s character Jo March, who also struggles to own the copyrights to her debut novel.

“It’s about believing in yourself and knowing your worth and owning your worth,” Watson said on the red carpet.

“Right now, the Taylor Swift situation is a great example of, you know, you’re young and you’re talented and someone wants to buy your work, but having ownership at the end of the day is super, super important because you don’t know what someone’s going to decide to do with that,” she explained.

The Harry Potter star also compared the situation to the Monopoly board game.

“I think people undervalue ownership,” she added. “You know when you play Monopoly and you have a decision and you want to own something or get cash fast. The way to win Monopoly, everyone, is to own stuff. I’m just saying.”

Watson isn’t the only Little Woman star to weigh in on Swift’s controversy; Ronan also made comparisons between her character and the “Lover” hitmaker while promoting the film last week.

“Taylor Swift just released an album [and it’s the first album she’s ever owned,” she said on This Morning. “We really wanted to use this opportunity to honour this and fight for her work.”

As for Swift, she first spoke out against Braun and Scott Borchetta in June after the talent manager purchased her masters allegedly without her consent.

The 30-year-old singer also took aim at Braun while accepting Billboard‘s Woman of the Decade Award. During her powerful speech, Swift noted that music is too often “bought up like real estate,” adding that it had “happened to me without my approval, consultation or consent.”

“The fact is that private equity enabled [Braun] to think, according to his own social media post, that he could ‘buy me.’ I’m obviously not going willingly,” she said. “Yet the most amazing thing was to discover that it would be the women in our industry who would have my back and show me the most vocal support at one of the most difficult times and I will never, ever forget it. Like, ever.”

What is this new term that people have been saying?

Ghosting—basically, it’s going on a few dates with someone, maybe two or more, and then you suddenly stop texting or calling them. You disappear, like a ghost. Has that happened to you, or have you done it to others?

Both. Both have happened. Mostly she’s done it to me because she has a boyfriend, she’s had a situation. From my standpoint, if you just realize somebody’s not really worth your time, I don’t think you should continue to waste your time. But if someone is asking for an explanation, I would give it to them. I wouldn’t just freeze them out and not explain anything.

What’s your favorite movie or TV love scene? Or sexiest music video?

“Promise” by Ciara. I think that song and video is super sexy.

What’s the sexiest thing about yourself?

I’m trying to figure out, like, should I make it physical or should I make it mental?

You could say one of each.

I think the sexiest thing about me is how I treat women. I think women should be treated like queens. So how I treat them when I’m actually in a relationship: like a queen.

What does that entail?

I think it entails being a romantic. Finding out what it is that they like, what it is they love to do, what makes them feel loved.

You’re alone in bed, about to fall asleep: What are you thinking about?

Heh. Um, I’m thinking of what my mindset is. My mindset is so different than it used to be. I used to think I’d have a situation by now where I’d be married with a couple of kids. But my mindset is so different now, I don’t see that in the near future. I feel surprised that my mindset’s changed so drastically. If you’d asked me five years ago, I would never in a million years think that I would be here. But I feel good, I feel happy in my skin. I feel like you have to learn to love yourself before you can love anyone else. I’ve been doing that, and it’s been wonderful.

Tell me about your new album 2Sides.

I released the first half, and I’m excited. It’s been four years since I’ve released new music, and I’m excited to get the music out and start putting the music videos out and whatnot.

Do you think your music makes a good sex playlist?

Definitely. I think “Diamonds” works really well for that.

Speaking of your songs, what’s a tip you would give someone who’s trying to work on their dirty talk?

I think it’s important to be free with your words but don’t go too far. Don’t get weird. Unless you know that person is into that. You should keep it in the wheelhouse of who your partner is. You have to know who your partner is! But you also have to be free and express what you want to express. It can be the greatest thing in the world to say the thing you want to say and not hold it inside. But the most important thing is learning your partner, learning what they want to hear.

Gabrielle Union Speaks Out Amid America's Got Talent Controversy


Gabrielle Union is publicly speaking out after her unexpected and controversial exit from America’s Got Talent.

On Wednesday, the actress took to Twitter to express her gratitude to fans after admitting she was feeling shaken and saddened after her ousting as a judge on the popular competition series.

“So many tears, so much gratitude. THANK YOU! Just when you feel lost, adrift, alone… you got me up off the ground. Humbled and thankful, forever ❤,” Union penned on Twitter.

News broke late last week that the actress as well as fellow judge Julianne Hough would not be returning for another season of America’s Got Talent: The Champions, which is set to premiere on January 6, 2020. The casting decision came amid a report, published by Variety on November 26, which alleged that Hough and Union had been cut after they “complained of toxic culture.” The report cites alleged racist incidents which Union urged producers to report to HR, according to insiders familiar with the show. The report also claims both Union and Hough “received excessive notes on their physical appearance” with Union being told her hair was “too black” for the show.

In another followup report published by Vulture, sources alleged that Union was described as “difficult” by fellow judge and show producer Simon Cowell as well as other producers. The report also claimed that Cowell asked Union not to take her complaints to NBC but instead address them with him personally—like her issue with Cowell continuously smoking indoors. Union is allergic to cigarette smoke and California law states employers can’t allow smoking in enclosed workspaces, but despite her complaints Union was told “no one could stop Cowell from smoking and that previous attempts by a fire marshal and NBC executives had been unsuccessful.” Vulture also confirmed that Union originally had a three-year contract with AGT.

Prince Harry Just Addressed That Private Jet Controversy


Much like many of us, the royal family—including Prince Harry—is getting back to work after a lighter workload over the summer. Unlike you, however, for the Duke of Sussex that means addressing the private jet controversy he and wife Meghan Markle have been dealing with lately.

In case you missed this royal drama, here’s the gist: the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are outspoken (as royal standards go) on the subject of climate change and other environmental issues. So when they took trips on private jets this summer—including one that took them to Elton John’s home in France for a vacation with baby Archie—critics came at them over their carbon footprint and deemed the behavior hypocritical. This also caused many celebrities like John, Ellen Degeneres, and Pink to speak out about what they considered to be unfair treatment of the couple in the British press.

Today, Harry was in Amsterdam to launch a new travel initiative and addressed the situation.

“I came here by commercial. I spend 99% of my life traveling the world by commercial,” he said. “Occasionally there needs to be an opportunity based on a unique circumstance to ensure my family are safe and it’s genuinely as simple as that.” He also added that he always offsets his CO2, which John stated he did for the royals’ trip to visit him.

So there you go. Harry says it was a safety issue, and who are we to question that? He also reminded everyone that he is only human, after all. “I’ve learned that we cannot dismiss the idea of trying to do something, just because we can’t do everything. We can all do better,” he said. “And, while no one is perfect, we are all responsible for our own individual impact; the question is what we do to balance it out.”

To that end, Harry was in Amsterdam to announce Travalyst (travel + catalyst) which is “global initiative striving to change the impact of travel, for good” with partners like Trip Advisor, Bookings.com, and Visa.

“I want to start with a little bit of background as to specifically why I’m here today, because as you may know, I am not a tourism or business expert, but through my travels I have observed the unique relationship between community and environment, and have noticed something alarming,” Harry said on the Sussex Royal Instagram. “There wasn’t the symbiosis or connection there needed to be and I wanted to understand why. I am one of those people fortunate enough to have a platform and I want to use it to tackle hard problems, in the hope of finding solutions…and that’s how Travalyst was born.”

Next up for the Sussex family is a royal tour in Africa starting September 23, where we will get to see how much little Archie has grown. We can’t wait.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's Latest Vacation Is Causing Controversy


Elton John is not here for the latest controversy surrounding Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.

For context: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex just returned from a vacation at John’s palatial estate in the South of France. They traveled to and from the quick jaunt via private jet, which some are branding as hypocritical due to the couple’s environmentalism work. One tabloid even referred to Prince Harry and Markle’s mode of transportation as “gas-guzzling.”

But John is coming to the royals’ defense. It turns out the pop icon both paid for Markle and Prince Harry’s private jet and ensured it was carbon neutral—thus shutting down all the people who think they aren’t practicing what they preach. (According to the cyber-gear initiative Go Green, making something “carbon neutral” means calculating how much a flight makes in greenhouse emissions and then donating that amount to a charity or project that’s striving to reduce emissions.)

“I am deeply distressed by today’s distorted and malicious account in the press surrounding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s private stay at my home in Nice last week,” John wrote on Twitter. “Prince Harry’s mother, Diana Princess Of Wales, was one of my dearest friends. I feel a profound sense of obligation to protect Harry and his family from the unnecessary press intrusion that contributed to Diana’s untimely death. After a hectic year continuing their hard work and dedication to charity, David and I wanted the young family to have a private holiday inside the safety and tranquility of our home. To maintain a high level of much-needed protection, we provided them with a private jet flight.”

John continued, “To support Prince Harry’s commitment to the environment, we ensured their flight was carbon neutral, by making the appropriate contribution to Carbon Footprint™. I highly respect and applaud both Harry and Meghan’s commitment to charity and I’m calling on the press to cease these relentless and untrue assassinations on their character that are spuriously crafted on an almost daily basis.”

Everything You Need to Know About the Nike 4th of July Sneaker Controversy


In a thematic red, white, and blue colorway, Nike‘s Air Max 1 Quick Strike Fourth of July sneakers were set to be released on Monday, just in time for the national holiday. But as of Tuesday, that had all changed.

The sportswear behemoth canceled distribution of the limited-edition shoe, deciding against the prominent design element featured on back of the shoe: the 13-star American flag, also known as the Betsy Ross flag, which is most directly associated with the American Revolutionary era. That just scratches the surface of the conversation surrounding the sneakers from the moment images were fist released.

In a statement to Glamour, the company said: “We regularly make business decisions to withdraw initiatives, products and services. Nike made the decision to halt distribution of the Air Max 1 Quick Strike Fourth of July shoe based on concerns that it could unintentionally offend and detract from the nation’s patriotic holiday.”

“Nike is a company proud of its American heritage and our continuing engagement supporting thousands of American athletes including the US Olympic team and US Soccer teams,” the statement continued. “We already employ 35,000 people in the U.S. and remain committed to creating jobs in the U.S., including a significant investment in an additional manufacturing center which will create 500 new jobs.”

Here’s how a Nike found itself at the center of a heated political debate—and how one of the brand’s biggest stars got involved.

The Sneakers

Photos of the special Air Max 1s first emerged at the end of June. And as they began circulating on social media, the sneakers began getting negative feedback. Comments on a post on Sneaker New’s Instagram account suggested the Betsy Ross flag wasn’t necessarily a celebratory patriotic symbol, but rather one that calls to mind an ugly period of American history.

The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal reported that Colin Kaepernick, the activist and former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, privately expressed concerns over the use of the 13-star flag, which dates back to times of slavery and has been re-appropriated by groups that laud a time before the establishment of the federal government, according to CNBC, and, at times, has been linked to white supremacists. Following his intervention, Nike reportedly decided to pull the shoe altogether.

The decision to cease distribution was “based on concerns that it could unintentionally offend and detract from the nation’s patriotic holiday,” said Nike spokesperson Sandra Carreon-John to the Times. But the rest of the country’s response—specifically from the right—was not necessarily on the same page.

The Flag’s Symbolism

Even as the history that ties Ross to the original flag’s design remains the stuff of legend, not explicitly fact, the most recent use of it is what’s currently driving the backlash to the Nike sneaker.
