Jason Derulo Talks Cats, That Instagram Controversy, and the Secret to a Good Thirst Trap

On the beach in a foreign country. It was incredible and risky. The nerves add to thrill.

Have you ever ghosted someone?

What is this new term that people have been saying?

Ghosting—basically, it’s going on a few dates with someone, maybe two or more, and then you suddenly stop texting or calling them. You disappear, like a ghost. Has that happened to you, or have you done it to others?

Both. Both have happened. Mostly she’s done it to me because she has a boyfriend, she’s had a situation. From my standpoint, if you just realize somebody’s not really worth your time, I don’t think you should continue to waste your time. But if someone is asking for an explanation, I would give it to them. I wouldn’t just freeze them out and not explain anything.

What’s your favorite movie or TV love scene? Or sexiest music video?

“Promise” by Ciara. I think that song and video is super sexy.

What’s the sexiest thing about yourself?

I’m trying to figure out, like, should I make it physical or should I make it mental?

You could say one of each.

I think the sexiest thing about me is how I treat women. I think women should be treated like queens. So how I treat them when I’m actually in a relationship: like a queen.

What does that entail?

I think it entails being a romantic. Finding out what it is that they like, what it is they love to do, what makes them feel loved.

You’re alone in bed, about to fall asleep: What are you thinking about?

Heh. Um, I’m thinking of what my mindset is. My mindset is so different than it used to be. I used to think I’d have a situation by now where I’d be married with a couple of kids. But my mindset is so different now, I don’t see that in the near future. I feel surprised that my mindset’s changed so drastically. If you’d asked me five years ago, I would never in a million years think that I would be here. But I feel good, I feel happy in my skin. I feel like you have to learn to love yourself before you can love anyone else. I’ve been doing that, and it’s been wonderful.

Tell me about your new album 2Sides.

I released the first half, and I’m excited. It’s been four years since I’ve released new music, and I’m excited to get the music out and start putting the music videos out and whatnot.

Do you think your music makes a good sex playlist?

Definitely. I think “Diamonds” works really well for that.

Speaking of your songs, what’s a tip you would give someone who’s trying to work on their dirty talk?

I think it’s important to be free with your words but don’t go too far. Don’t get weird. Unless you know that person is into that. You should keep it in the wheelhouse of who your partner is. You have to know who your partner is! But you also have to be free and express what you want to express. It can be the greatest thing in the world to say the thing you want to say and not hold it inside. But the most important thing is learning your partner, learning what they want to hear.

Francesca Hayward on Cats, Living Without Regrets, and Getting a Phone Call From Meghan Markle

“And snacks! I’m always snacking. It’s difficult obviously because when you’re dancing I can’t always have a huge lunch because then I’m jumping around. I love bananas, I love almond butter, nuts, and definitely chocolate. Everyone knows that I’m not very nice when I’m hungry.”

And the rewards for her work are fun. The fanciest part is the clothes. “I’ve been very fortunate to be wearing some Chanel lately, that was like my Pretty Woman moment, walking out of Chanel with some bags of clothes,” she says. “And a lot of Bottega Veneta, which is one of my favorite designer right now. And I wore a Simone Rocha dress to the Fashion Awards in London.”

And what about, you know, the fact that she just filmed a movie with an entire awards season’s worth of celebrities? I asked Hayward who made her the most star-struck, and I expected her to spit out some platitude, like “They were all so impressive!” or “I can’t choose!”

“Definitely Dame Judi Dench,” she said, immediately. “I remember her walking in with Ian McKellan, they walked in together in rehearsals, and the whole room, all the dancers and the actors, everyone made this line, to kind of curtsy or bow to royalty.” She paused, seemingly in wonder, and I imagined Jason Derulo curtsying to Judi Dench.

“There’s something about them, especially in England, they’re like the royal family, they’re legendary. And they’ve earned that legendary status,” she said, reverently. And Taylor, too—“She’s just the sweetest and most humble person,” Hayward said. “To be one of the most famous people in the world and make you feel very comfortable is quite a talent I think.”

To be fair, Hayward’s sense of comfort around A-list celebrities may be skewed. One day on the set of Cats, she received a phone call from British Vogue editor Edward Enninful, asking if she would be one of 15 women on a cover with the theme “a force for change.”

“It was one of the hardest secrets ever, I think I only told my grandma, and she was sworn to secrecy,” she says, laughing. She did the shoot, in which she spoke decisively about feeling pride in being a woman of color in the ballet world, while adding, “I think it will be great for the next mixed-race or black female principal dancer if she doesn’t have to be asked about that. In ballet, it doesn’t matter who you are.”

Later, Enninful called her while she was at a noisy restaurant in Covent Garden, and told her there was someone who wanted to speak to her. It was Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle, who had personally chosen Hayward for the cover and wanted to say thank you. “She really made me feel like she wanted me to be a part of it and had chosen me as one of this amazing group of women herself,” Hayward said. “It was incredible.”

And if there’s anyone you could not resent for being personally thanked by Meghan Markle for agreeing to be on the cover of Vogue, it’s Francesca Hayward, who gets up before dawn to pursue her dreams, leaves behind no regrets, goes to the pub, and bows before Judi Dench. We wish her good snacks—and plenty of sleep.

Why Is the Cats Trailer So Upsetting? An Investigation

“I mean, female breasts are not a bad thing,” Valentino says. “A female body is beautiful, it’s not shameful in the least.”

Quackenbush says that it’s not the breasts or the abs that are problematic, it’s the fact that they’re connected to, well, cats. “There’s a taboo for having a sexual feeling for an animal, and there is something a little sexualized about the characters in the trailer,” she says. That’s why it feels weird to lust after the silky-haired Idris Elba-cat, while audiences have been giving standing ovations to Cats casts for years.

The premise of Cats is undeniably insane–a cat community meets in a dirty alley to sing about themselves until, eventually, one cat is selected to die and go to cat heaven. And though many of the cats are supposed to be sexy (there’s one named “Rum Tum Tugger”) audiences have generally found human actors in face paint and fur leg warmers more charming than seductive. When Cats opened on Broadway in 1982 the New York Times review hailed it as “primal” and Variety called it a “pleasurable fantasy creation.” When it was revived on Broadway most recently in 2016, the Guardian called it “strangely adorable.”

So why are so many people going through it, with these brief, sensual showtune-y cat clips? Why does it feel like perky human butts covered in fine orange hair are etched on the inside of my eyelids? Valentino thinks the trailer is “like a Rorschach Test — people see things the way they see them due to their personal catharsis, or lack thereof.” She adds, “Sometimes a cat is just a cat.”

Daniel Quagliozzi, a cat behavioral specialist, disagrees. “Because of where we’ve come, historically, through our view of cats and internet influence, and projection, we want to put a human value on cats all the time,” he says. Humans are desperate to relate to cats, he argues. “But when we see cats that look more like humans—it disturbs our minds.”

“When we see cats dancing in human bodies and human faces…” his voice trails off, and we both think about furry tails looming behind a human skull, cheekbones stretching out hair-covered skin. Uncanny.

And yet, I will certainly pay money to see Cats in theaters.

For I would like to know the answer to the question, “What would it be like if all the Harry Potter characters looked like Hermione when she accidentally takes Polyjuice potion laced with cat hair?” It will also provide a much needed service to people who harbor fantasies about mixing their DNA with cats. And most important, it will test the limits of a culture that’s made cats its mascot. Hello Kitty, Grumpy Cat, and half the videos on YouTube have only been a warmup for this: over one hundred straight minutes of cat content, performed as a pop-opera, butt-hair and all.

Everything We Know About the *Cats* Movie Starring Jennifer Hudson and Taylor Swift

Get ready to have the Cats soundtrack stuck in your head. The beloved Broadway musical is being made into a live-action film directed by Tom Hooper, the Academy-Award winner who also brought a musical version of Les Misérables to the big screen. The best part? Hooper has chosen a jaw-dropping, all-star cast to breathe new life into the story of the Jellicles and the unforgettable compositions by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

In July 2018, news broke that Hooper had cast Taylor Swift in the project. She’ll be playing the role of sassy queen cat Bombalurina, alongside Jennifer Hudson’s Grizabella and Judi Dench’s Old Deuteronomy—and those are just three of the major celebrities involved in the production.

The movie’s first trailer drops on Friday, July 19, and ahead of that we received an interesting behind-the-scenes video featuring the entire cast. Watch it, below:

Here’s everything we know about the movie so far:

The cast is incredible. This movie has some serious star power. In fact, in the behind the scenes video, Hooper compared directing the cast to directing a group of “world-class athletes.” We already have goosebumps imagining Hudson’s rendition of “Memory” (she gave people a snippet of her take in Texas recently), but the film also includes other A-listers. In addition to Hudson, Swift, and Dench, it stars James Corden as Bustopher Jones, Rebel Wilson as Jennyanydots, Jason Derulo as Rum Tum Tugger, Idris Elba as Macavity, and Ian McKellen as Gus the Theatre Cat.

It’s a high-tech production. People have already been wondering how Hooper is going to handle the iconic cat costumes from the Broadway musical. The behind-the-scenes video reveals that he’s going with a combination of costumes and digital technology that will create what he calls “the most perfect covering of fur.”

“These are people, but they’re cats, and it’s kind of blowing my mind,” Corden says in the video. “There is nothing else like it.”

Taylor Swift Is Making Her Return to Acting—in a Movie Adaptation of *Cats*

In casting news literally no one saw coming, Taylor Swift is slated to star in a movie version of the musical Cats, alongside James Corden, Jennifer Hudson, and Ian McKellen. Yes, you read that correctly. Taylor Alison Swift—known cat enthusiast—is starring in the quintessential musical about cats.

Tom Hooper, who directed The King’s Speech and the 2012 film version of Les Misérables, will helm this version of Cats, which will start filming in November, according to Variety. Lee Hall wrote the script, and the music is, of course, by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The last movie Swift acted in was 2014’s adaptation of The Giver. Before that, she hilariously played a lovesick teenager in 2010’s Valentine’s Day. She’s also done some acting in her music videos, too. Remember when she stabbed that cake in the “Blank Space” video, or when she wore a red wig and scowled in “Bad Blood?” That, my friends, is what we call range.

There’s no word yet on who Swift is playing. Hudson, however, is taking on the role of Grizabella, the former “glamour cat” who sings the popular song “Memory.”

We just have two requests after hearing this casting news: 1) The costumes better be on point, and 2) Swift’s cats, Meredith and Olivia, need to make some sort of appearance. I mean, they’re already all over her Instagram. Just look at this photo:

Or this video:

One more shot, because it’s just too good:

All of this is to say Meredith and Olivia have been preparing for this movie all their lives. They’re ready for their close-up—and I’m ready to see Taylor Swift dueting with James Corden in Cats.

A release date hasn’t been announced yet, though winter 2019 is probably a safe bet. Something tells me Hooper and company will be trying for Oscar gold.
