Rose Gold Hair Is the Perfect Fall Update to a Huge Summer Hair Color Trend

Celebrities and Instagrammers alike were obsessed this summer with one of the season’s biggest hair color trends: stylish, vivacious pink. The love for pink champagne hair hit us all hard, and celebrities like Gigi Hadid, Keke Palmer and Ashley Benson embraced bright pink hair. But just because the weather’s changed—and along with it, a traditional foray into darker hair hues—doesn’t mean we have to give up pink: a trending metallic shade has inspired the perfect autumn update of summer’s favorite shade.

Rose gold is the more metallic, multi-dimensional version of the bubblegum pinks we saw during the summer. Rather than calling for hair to be bleached blond and then dyed light pink, this trend incorporates highlights and lowlights throughout the hair so it doesn’t look flat. The resulting mix of shades makes it look shimmery and metallic, and the wash of pink gives it the rosy tone.

Busy Philipps dyed best friend Michelle Williams’ hair a faded version of pink that matches her own rose gold hair that she DIYs. The duo created the color at home by applying some leave-in hair tint over Williams’ signature platinum blond, but for those of us who want a little extra help getting the look, head to a salon for a professional job that will ensure you achieve the right shade. One of the best parks of this shade is that you don’t have to be blond to work the look: it looks great with darker shades of hair with the help of carefully placed strands of color or ombré.

Here are a few of fall’s latest rose gold converts.

So dimensional and pretty, right? We think that its warmth and hint of color are the perfect way to stave off the chill as the days get colder. For more autumn hair inspo, check out these 40 gorgeous hairstyles that are perfect for fall.

Sarah Hyland Had the Perfect Response to This Troll Who Thought Birth Control Is Just for Sex

Sarah Hyland has never been afraid to serve up some righteous justice/logic on Twitter. Case in point, her spot-on response to paparazzi who were trying to get her to bash Modern Family co-star Ariel Winter. “y’all digging for something you’re never going to get,” Hyland tweeted as a response, adding in the laugh-cry emoji for a splash of extra defiance. Then, there was that time this summer when she burned Vice President Mike Pence after he touched a casual bit of space equipment at NASA that clearly had a “DO NOT TOUCH” sign in front of it (the capital letters were real). So when a Twitter troll showed up on her feed in support of President Trump‘s egregiously awful rollback on the Affordable Care Act’s birth control mandate, she was not about to let him get away with it.

It started on Friday, when Hyland tweeted some outrage about the stripped contraception protections into the Twitterverse:

Of course, those on both sides of the issue had plenty to say, but one fan in particular really got her goat. His tweet has since been deleted, for reasons that will shortly become clear. But Hyland’s response hammered home an important point: birth control is not just for women looking to prevent pregnancy when they have sex. It’s for women looking to control abnormal or irregular periods, endometriosis, and numerous other medical conditions that all relate to the lovely functions performed by cisgender women’s reproductive parts.

The ability to afford birth control—or, thanks to the Affordable Care Act, the guarantee that it will be free through insurance—is necessary for some women who experience chronic suffering when it comes time for their periods. The user who sent the tweets later said that he tweeted apologies twice (and maybe he’s shifted his perspective on the matter after a torrent of tweets directed at his misfire).

Unfortunately, however, the fact that birth control has important, critical purposes beyond preventing pregnancy is something that the men who still largely control women’s healthcare just don’t get.

Ellen DeGeneres Had the Perfect Response to Why She'd Never Have Trump on Her Show

Ellen DeGeneres has no love lost for President Donald Trump, it’s safe to say. DeGeneres was one among many celebrities who tweeted words of support after Clinton’s loss. “Thank you @HillaryClinton for your speech and for your endless bravery. We are stronger together,” she wrote. In January, she alluded to not supporting Trump when he screened Finding Dory at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue: “Over the weekend, on Friday, the president gave an order banning people from seven countries from entering the United States, including people with green cards,” she said on her show. “And then on Saturday, the president screened Finding Dory at the White House. I don’t get political, but I will say that I am against one of those two things.”

By May, the comedian, who, as Vanity Fair pointed out, is known for “keeping things light,” made it clear that Trump wouldn’t be invited on her show. Matt Lauer got to her admit she hadn’t spoken with Trump—whom she’d encountered when filming something briefly for her show during season one of Celebrity Apprentice—since he began running for president. Lauer asked her why he’d never be on her show and she responded, “Because I’m not going to change his mind,” adding that the president is “against everything that I stand for.”

“We need to look at someone else who looks different than us and believes in something that we don’t believe in and still accept them, and still let them have their rights,” she added.

She reiterated her position when she spoke with another journalist, Megyn Kelly, on The Ellen DeGeneres Show last week. DeGegeneres asked Kelly if she’d had him on her upcoming Today With Megyn Kelly, who said of course—he’s a sitting president of the United States. Kelly flipped the question back to DeGeneres, who had the perfect response:

“I would not have him on my show,” she said as the audience applauded. “He is who he is and he has enough attention. He has his Twitter account and he has ways to get his message across.” She then reiterated something she’d told Lauer, before adding a crucial part: “There is nothing I’m going to say to him that’s going to change him, and I don’t want to give him a platform, because it validates him.”

DeGeneres continued:

“For me to have someone on the show, I have to at least admire them in some way. And I can’t have someone that I feel is not only dangerous for the country—and for me personally as a gay woman—but to the world. He’s dividing all of us…I just don’t want him on the show.”

Well said, Ellen, well said. Watch the full clip below:

Kendall Jenner's Reaction to the Rumor She Had an Affair With Scott Disick Is Perfect

Kendall Jenner is highly skilled at dealing with rumors, especially ones about her personal life. When people thought she didn’t tip a New York City bartender over the summer, she clapped back accordingly. She straight-up didn’t respond to the nonsense report about her and Orlando Bloom getting together. (Bloom shut this down himself in October 2015.) And when stories emerged about her alleged “facial reconstruction” surgery, she wrote a lengthy defense essay on her website. She doesn’t play games when it comes to her reputation.

So it’s no surprise her reaction to the age-old rumor about her and Scott Disick hooking up is priceless. If you don’t keep up with the Kardashians (ba-dum ching!), here’s a little backstory: A few years ago, tabloids started reporting that Kendall and her half-sister Kourtney Kardashian’s ex Scott were having some kind of affair. There was no proof of this relationship: just anonymous tips from “sources” printed in publications that also write about Jennifer Aniston getting divorced and married on the same day. So, in other words, it was a laughably untrue story.

And that’s exactly how Kendall reacts to it on the upcoming Keeping Up With the Kardashians 10-year reunion special: She laughs. “I didn’t even know that existed,” she says, audibly cracking up. “I was 19! That was two years ago! Definitely false, though.”

False and also “bottom of the barrel,” according to Kris Jenner. “Kendall, it says, ‘I’m not going to apologize,'” the Kardashian-Jenner matriarch reads off the magazine cover, chuckling as well. During the special, the group also jokes about rumors Kris and Khloe Kardashian’s ex Lamar Odom were an item.

Watch this all go down in the video, below:

Lorde's Response to People Hating on Her 'Unibrow' Is Perfect

It’s a fact universally recognized that Lorde is a boss. Even if you’re not a fan of her music, you’ve gotta admire the work ethic of someone who showed up to the VMAs with a fever and, not able to sing, still pulled out my favorite nationally televised award ceremony interpretative dance to date (the list admittedly isn’t long, but regardless). Her many accomplishments also include running an onion ring Instagram account, which just served to wedge her firmer into my heart. But lo and behold, she’s full of surprises: Lorde’s clapback to haters on Twitter reveals that she didn’t just happen across her current confidence.

With her Vogue Australia cover just hitting stands, the singer posted her cover looks to Twitter with a celebratory caption to the tune of “VOGUE BABY AHHH! ✨?☺️” (it’s unclear where the banana comes in, but hey, that’s Lorde). And then, she unleashed this: “It’s literally f-cked that I could be on the cover of Vogue [and] I used to get called monobrow at school. That BROW IS ON COVER OF VOGUE.”

From the tweet, it sounds like Lorde—Lorde—was bullied at school for her luscious eyebrows (or unibrow, as the case may be), and now she’s living it up on the cover of Vogue, which has to be up there in revenge schemes. And the world, full of pettiness in the best possible way, rejoiced. Tweet after tweet is here for Lorde’s comment, with fans thanking the singer for inspiring them (and, you know, serving her revenge in the most publicly satisfying way).

Lorde’s just the latest celebrity to speak out for her “imperfections,” joining Yara Shahidi, Paris Jackson, and Bella Thorne in doing what they want.

How to Actually Get the Perfect Messy Waves

Of all the mysterious, maddening hair fantasies we see on the runway during Fashion Month, effortless messy waves are the most perplexing. For starters, anything described as effortless usually takes an absurd amount of effort—or at least some secret know-how. Once you factor in the length, texture, and the “to heat style or not to heat style” variables to the equation, you’ve got a complex hair problem worthy of a team of scientists and a whiteboard.

Since we take our own hyperbole seriously, we kept our eyes, ears, and iPhones on high alert backstage at New York Fashion Week for any key tips. And after much diligent reporting, we got ’em: the best ways to get peak effortless waves with and without hot tools—no length left behind.

How to get messy waves without any heat…

PHOTO: Astrid Stawiarz

If you deal with breakage on the daily and don’t want to risk heat styling, you can still get in on the messy waves action thanks to Tresemmé Global Stylist Justine Marjan. She’s responsible for many of this season’s runway waves (see also the Kardashians’), including the just-rolled-out-of-bed waves at Creatures of Comfort (above). How’d she do it? We asked her to break down her heat-free fold technique for us backstage.

Begin with totally dry hair and ready lots and lots of firm-hold mousse. Rake the mousse through your hair with your fingers, starting at the mid lengths (if you start at the roots, you’ll get wet-look hair; cool if you want that, but FYI if you don’t) and work your way down. Next, do like Marjan and fold sections of your hair upwards at about one-inch intervals, then gently squeeze. It feels a little funny at first and you might feel compelled to overthink it, but it’s really as easy as she makes it look. Once you’ve folded your hair into waves you’re happy with, set them in place with flexible hairspray. Done and done.

How to get messy waves with a curling iron…

Adam Selman - Backstage - September 2017 - New York Fashion Week Presented By MADE

PHOTO: Robin Marchant

The trick to getting that awesome undone look with an iron is all in the way you work the barrel. At the Adam Selman show, stylist James Pecis got the cool, loose bends above by creating S-shaped waves—as opposed to C-shaped barrel curls—by switching the position of the curling iron once or twice per one-inch section of hair, as shown in the truly mesmerizing clip below.

Start by holding the barrel of your iron vertically—and partially wrap one-inch sections of your hair around the wand to shape it. Give the look just the right amount of piece-y finish by raking your hands through the waves and setting them with a dry conditioner. Lastly, make like Pecis and run a texturizer (like amika Haute Mess Texture Gel) throughout the length of your waves. Pro tip: rub the gel between your hands first to warm up the product. It’ll help disperse the gel through your hair more easily.

Marjan also favored the vertical curling iron technique at Rebecca Minkoff. For longer hair, she recommends working in “large vertical sections for the most natural finish.” The key here is to also make sure you’re twisting the iron away from your face.

PHOTO: Getty Images

As for short hair, the approach to creating soft, natural waves is more or less the same with one major difference: your tools. Rodney Cutler, the stylist behind the looks at this season’s Nicole Miller presentation, recommends using a one-and-a-half-inch barrel iron, again held vertically when curling. Start each section midway down and leave your ends straight to create more modern wave.

How to get messy waves with a straightener…

Warning: When a pro stylist even tells you getting waves with a flatiron is harder than it looks, it means you’re going to need to give yourself the time to practice. First, Marjan says it’s crucial that you’ve got a straightener that easily glides through your hair. One with beveled edges (like the GHD Gold Iron) will help since your hair won’t snag at the sides when you rotate the iron. Next, you want to twist the iron up and down, making sure to changing the direction the iron is pointing. When the iron bevels up, the top of your iron should be pointing up, and when it bevels under, the top of your iron should be pointing down.

If that may as well have been written in Valyrian, here’s a look at the process.

The finished result is a looser, more ’70s finish than you’d get with a curling iron. But just as cool.
