Lady Gaga Is Coming for the Oscars in the First Trailer for A Star Is Born


Lady Gaga is coming for the Oscars.

The trailer for the singer’s highly-anticipated remake of A Star Is Born just dropped—and it’s good. Like, really good. If you’re unfamiliar with film’s general premise —the 1958 adaptation with Judy Garland is a must-watch— A Star Is Born follows an aging, borderline-alcoholic rock star evolving past his prime (Bradley Cooper) who has a chance encounter with a gifted young singer at a cabaret (Gaga, although Beyoncé was originally slated to play her). She wants to a be, well, a star, but doesn’t have the full confidence to pursue her destiny until they meet and form a connection. A dramatic mixture of love and power ensue, as her fame gradually rises while his falls.

A Star Is Born is a passion project for Cooper, who’s been attached to the film since 2012. He’s not only starring but also making his directorial debut with it. “It all came down to this broken love story, and there’s no better way to express that than through singing because there’s nowhere to hide when you’re singing. Your whole body is electrified,” Cooper explained last year. “That was the initial igniter of the passion for me … then, it was about going back and watching the other versions, and each one had many merits, and I wanted to make sure that this movie paid homage to and was aware of the [others], and honored [them] as another incarnation, while at the same time being a very personal movie that lives on its own.”

Casey Affleck Withdraws From Oscars, Won’t Present Best Actress Award


Casey Affleck has reportedly withdrawn from the upcoming Academy Awards, where, as last year’s Best Actor winner, he was set to present the Oscar for Best Actress. According to Deadline, the actor told the Academy that not only will he not be presenting any awards at the 2018 Oscars, but he has also declined his invitation to the entire ceremony. “Affleck did not want to become a distraction from the focus that should be on the performances of the actresses in the category,” a source told the publication.

Affleck’s withdrawal comes amid criticism that he, an accused sexual harasser, would be allowed to present such an important statuette. In 2010, while directing I’m Still Here, a mockumentary starring Joaquin Phoenix, Affleck was sued by two female employees who claimed that he “led and fostered an environment of sexual harassment on set.” One of the women also claimed that Affleck climbed into bed with her one night and touched her without her consent. At the 2017 Oscars, Affleck won Best Actor for his performance in Manchester by the Sea. (Brie Larson, who presented the award after winning Best Actress in 2016 for her role as a victim of sexual assault in Room, notably did not clap did for the actor.

With the recent rise of the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements, it seems Affleck would rather avoid the public scrutiny altogether at this year’s Oscars (where he isn’t nominated for any awards) than face the certain backlash he would receive for presenting such a prestigious award to a woman. Celebrities have been supporting Time’s Up during awards season by wearing pins and dressing in all black on red carpets. At this weekend’s Grammys, musicians will wear white roses to demonstrate support for sexual assault victims. There have not yet been any plans announced for a demonstration on the Oscars red carpet.

Recently, James Franco, who was accused by five women for sexual misconduct following a win at the 2018 Golden Globes for The Disaster Artist—he was snubbed in this year’s Oscar noms—skipped the Critics’ Choice Awards. And Aziz Ansari, who was accused of sexual misconduct, skipped the Screen Actors Guild Awards, despite being a nominee. Ansari had also won at this year’s Globes for Best Actor in a Comedy.

Gal Gadot Has the Best Response to 'Wonder Woman' Getting Snubbed by the Oscars


The 2018 Oscar nominations are stacked this year. Greta Gerwig scored a directing nod for Lady Bird; both Octavia Spencer and Mary J. Blige are nominated for Best Supporting Actress; Get Out racked up; and for the first time ever, a woman is in the running for Best Cinematography. Even with all this progress, though, there’s still a glaring issue: Wonder Woman didn’t receive a single Oscar nomination. Granted, superhero films aren’t typically considered awards-season fare, but Wonder Woman was groundbreaking. It was one of the highest-grossing films of 2017, critically acclaimed, and featured a nuanced, impressive performance by Gal Gadot. Why the film was snubbed by the Academy—even in the technical categories—is a mystery.

Twitter users made it very clear they’re not happy about Wonder Woman‘s lack of nominations, but Gadot isn’t sweating it. The actress told Entertainment Tonight she has no hard feelings about Wonder Woman being left out of the Oscars race. The experience making the film, for her, was the real reward.

“I was very moved and touched by the people who were disappointed that Wonder Woman wasn’t nominated, but we certainly never did the movie for that,” she told ET. “I think that you can’t have it all. We’ve done this movie and it was received in such an amazing, wonderful way, and we want to stay humble and grateful, and we’re going to have another movie, so who knows? Maybe the next one.”

Let’s get the 2020 Oscar campaign for Wonder Woman 2 started right now. Lord knows Gadot deserves the gold if she has to battle Ares again.

'Wonder Woman' Was Snubbed by the Oscars, and People Are Not Happy About It


Despite being the movie of summer 2017 and breaking several box office records, Wonder Woman somehow walked away from the Oscar nominations on Tuesday morning without a single nomination. That means Patty Jenkins will not be joining the embarrassingly small list of female directors nominated for Hollywood’s biggest award (though this year’s set of nominations does include one female director, Greta Gerwig for Lady Bird). It also means Gal Gadot is not among the nominated actresses for her portrayal of a warrior who has to go through an incredible emotional journey and still balance a sword in the back of her dress without the help of double-sided tape. Movies that did receive a nod, though, include Boss Baby. (#NoDisrespectToHansZimmer)

The snub has created some major frustration among Wonder Woman fans, who have done what frustrated moviegoers always do: taken to Twitter to vent. They were quick to point out even if you don’t believe the DC film should have been a contender for an acting or directing nod, it should have at least been a contender in something like Best Costume Design because again, a sword in a dress!

Wonder Woman might not have a shot at taking home a golden statue this March, but the franchise is still a leader in the industry for one very important reason. The highly anticipated sequel will be the first film to put the Producers Guild of America’s anti-sexual-harassment guidelines into effect. The guidelines will provide not only anti-harassment education but also a clear system to allow victims of harassment to report it.

Meryl Streep Just Broke Her Own Oscars Record for the Most Acting Nominations


Typical Streep! Grande Dame of film acting Meryl Streep was just nominated for Best Actress for her role as Katharine Graham in Steven Spielberg’s The Post, a historical drama about The Washington Post battle against the Nixon administration to publish the Pentagon Papers. This is Streep’s 21st acting nomination, breaking her own record for most nominated actor ever. She’s well ahead of the game, since Jack Nicholson and Katharine Hepburn are tied for second place, with a measly 12 nominations apiece. While Streep is the most nominated actress in history, she isn’t actually the biggest winner; while she and a handful of others have three statuettes at home, Katharine Hepburn is the only person ever to take four for acting.

“I am honored beyond measure by this nomination for a film I love, a film that stands in defense of press freedom, and inclusion of women’s voices in the movement of history,” Streep said in a statement, per the Huffington Post following Tuesday’s nominations announcement. “Proud of the film, and all her filmmakers. Thank you from a full heart.”

The Post was also nominated for Best Picture, but the buzzy and timely drama failed to crack other categories. Still, there’s no denying that Streep is really good in it. Streep faces stiff competition for Best Actress, though. She’s up against Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water), Frances McDormand (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Margot Robbie (I, Tonya), and Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird). McDormand is the clear favorite to win after this past weekend’s SAG Awards win.

But, undoubtedly, this latest nomination only further cements Streep as the greatest film actress of her time. She only very rarely makes a bad movie, and it’s never bad because of her. She can next be seen on the big screen in two highly anticipated musical sequels: Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! and Mary Poppins Returns. Viva La Streep!
