Oscars 2020: Billie Eilish’s Performance of ‘Yesterday’ Was Astonishing


Billie Eilish gave a show-stopping, heartbreaking performance of the Beatles song “Yesterday” during the “In Memoriam” segment at the Oscars 2020.

Eilish, who continues to be, improbably, a teenager, gave a rendition of the classic 1965 song that showed off her smoky voice and emotional range as a performer.

Just two weeks after sweeping the Grammys—she was the second person to ever win the “Big Four” categories and the youngest-ever winner of Album of the Year and Record of the Year—the 18-year-old loaned her surreal talent to a segment of the awards show that’s painfully anticipated every year. The Oscars 2020 “In Memoriam” segment was particularly poignant in light of the recent deaths of Kobe Bryant and Kirk Douglas. The performance also highlighted the careers of director Agnes Varda and actress and singer Doris Day.

Eilish—who has to be the first teen girl pop star to have the Google autocomplete “…cries black tears?”—performed with her brother and collaborator, Finneas O’Connell, who accompanied her on piano. Earlier that day, she shared that the song has a special significance for her. “Honored to be performing during the In memoriam segment for the Oscars tonight covering a song I’ve always loved,” she wrote in an Instagram Story on Sunday, just hours before the awards show.

Eilish drew eyes (sans black tears) throughout the awards show, when—true to her Gen-Z status—she made instantly meme-able facial expressions during both Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudoph’s comedy musical number, and during Eminem’s performance of “Lose Yourself.” (Haters, please remember we’re talking about someone who is not yet of legal drinking age here.) But her “Yesterday” performance proved what her fans already know—whether you love her or feel strangely reminded of your mortality by her—she’s talented, and she’s here to stay.

The 2020 Oscars went down on Sunday, February 9, and it was quite the show. While the nominees were predictable (and alarmingly non-diverse), the ceremony itself had some exciting moments—from Billie Eilish’s performance to the surprise Parasite sweep to, of course, the red-carpet fashion.

But don’t worry if you slept on Hollywood’s biggest night (it was three hours, after all): We have the highlights roundup for you right here. Read on for all the 2020 Oscar memes & moments you need to know about:

All the Jennifer Lopez Oscar snub memes. My personal favorite: This video tweet of a man carrying an Oscar podium with the caption, “Me stealing an Oscar to give it to J.Lo for Hustlers.”

Janelle Monáe’s opening performance. It was a dazzling song-and-dance presentation of all the year’s top movies. Billy Porter made an iconic cameo, as well.

Brad Pitt winning Best Supporting Actor. To no one’s surprise, he won for Best Supporting Actor—and got choked up during his acceptance speech.

All the Elsas singing “Into the Unknown” from Frozen. Idina Menzel was joined by women who voice Elsa from all over the world.

Bong Joon Ho winning Best Original Screenplay for Parasite. Several celebrities stood up when his win was announced. Parasite went on to win several other awards, as well, including Best Director (Joon Ho) and Best Picture.

Diane Keaton presenting. Her outfit was incredible. She almost dropped the envelope. We stan a relatable legend.

Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph presenting Best Production Design. Their bit was hilarious, naturally.

Billie Eilish’s face, at one point, in the crowd. An instant meme.

Chrissy Metz’s performance of “I’m Standing with You” from Breakthrough. It was nominated for Best Original Song.

Laura Dern winning Best Supporting Actress for Marriage Story. It was an expected but wonderful win. She thanked her parents, both famous actors, in her acceptance speech.

Eminem performing “Lose Yourself.” It was great, don’t get me wrong, but it was a bit…I don’t know, confusing? Like, why this year? When 8 Mile came out in 2002? The bewildered celebrity reactions are all memes waiting to happen.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell presenting together. Absolute comedic gold.

Cynthia Erivo performing “Stand Up” from Harriet. Another Best Original Song nominee—and another stunning performance.

James Corden and Rebel Wilson dressing up as their Cats characters to present for Best Visuals Effects. A nod to the movie’s…erm, bizarre…art.

Hildur Guðnadóttir winning for Best Original Score. She is only the fourth female composer to win Best Score and the first since 1997. “To the girls to the women to the mothers to the daughters who hear the music bubbling within. Please speak up, we need to hear your voices,” she said in her speech.

Billie Eilish’s In Memoriam performance. She sang “Yesterday” by The Beatles, and it was incredible.

Olivia Colman presenting for Best Actor. “Winning an Oscar ages you,” she said, a self-deprecating jab at her newly-dyed silver hair. Can she please host everything?

Why Did Eminem Perform at the Oscars 2020?


There haven’t been many surprises when it comes to the statues being handed out at the Oscars 2020. But the audience, and viewers at home, got a big one when Eminem appeared on stage after a montage of great musical moments to perform his hit “Lose Yourself.”

For those who don’t know, “Lose Yourself” from the movie Eight Mile won Best Original Song at the 2003 Academy Awards—the first rap song ever to do so. Now, if you’re asking yourself, “Why did Eminem suddenly appear to perform this song in 2020?” you’re in excellent company.

Eminem himself gave us a clue as to why he was at the Oscars tonight on Twitter writing, “Look, if you had another shot, another opportunity… Thanks for having me @TheAcademy. Sorry it took me 18 years to get here.” (He wasn’t present in 2003.)

The celebs in the room also looked surprised to see Eminem—the crowd was filled with bewildered action shots (peep the looks caught on camera from Billie Eilish and Idina Menzel).

Martin Scorsese didn’t seem thrilled. Maybe that’s because “Lose Yourself” beat out U2’s “The Hands That Built America” from his movie, Gangs of New York, in 2003.

Kelly Marie Tran was loving it—and knew all the words.

Basically, it was a real mixed bag of confusion and excitement.

And, in the end, Eminem got a standing ovation from the crowd.

Everyone on Twitter had some fun with it, too. “Yes, the Eminem choice was odd, but I’d love a show where pop stars perform their biggest hits and we get to see which celebrities in the audience are into which song. Does Benedict Cumberbatch like Shake It Off? Let’s find out! #Oscars,” one person tweeted.

Oscars 2020: Watch 10 Elsas Sing 'Frozen'


That infamous Adele Dazeem moment? Ancient history. Idina Menzel got redemption at the 2020 Oscars 2020 in the purest form possible: singing and sisterhood. She gave a flawless rendition of “Into the Unknown,” the Frozen 2 tune vying for Best Original Song, joined by nine bonus Elsas—all women who voice the ice queen in international versions of the popular franchise.

Menzel, who also starred in the snubbed-by-the-Oscars-but-still-fabulous Uncut Gems this year, delivered conflicted ice queen realness along with actors who voice Elsa in Denmark, Germany, Japan, Norway, Poland, Russia, Spain, and Thailand, as well as the actors who voice Elsa in Latin American countries. The 11th singer on the Oscars 2020 stage was Aurora, the 23-year-old Norwegian phenomenon who sings the shivery “mysterious voice” role in the movie.

Surrounded by floating ice crystals and mist, Menzel appeared in a sparkling white off-the-shoulder J. Mendel gown, dripping with diamonds, flaunting her trademark steak-cutter cheekbones. She was joined by Elsas who sing, respectively, in Polish, Thai, Castilian, German, Norwegian, Russian, and Spanish. The effect was both moving and extremely sparkly.

Frozen 2 didn’t receive a nomination for Best Animated Feature, so “Into the Unknown,” written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, is the movie’s one chance for a win. The song doesn’t have the once-in-a-generation princess anthem quality of its predecessor, “Let It Go,” but in some ways it’s more emotionally mature and complex.

“Every day’s a little harder as I feel your power grow,” Queen Elsa sings, addressing her own gnawing sense that she is being called to something greater than her normal life. “Don’t you know there’s part of me that longs to go into the unknown?”

Wait, a powerful female ruler debates leaving a comfortable castle behind to follow a deep personal calling into the unknown. Meghan Markle, is that you?

Oscars 2020: All the Best Dressed Stars on the Red Carpet

Awards season came to a glamorous conclusion tonight, February 9, with the 2020 Oscars. While the nominations weren’t as diverse as we would have liked, the style of the stars who attended did not disappoint. Granted, the fashion we saw on this carpet was safer and more straightforward than the Grammys and Golden Globes, but it still felt special. This is Hollywood’s biggest night, after all. The stars have to bring their A-game. (Well, the female stars have to, at least. Men just wear the same black tuxes and get away with it, but that’s a rant for later.)

Some of our favorites from tonight included our January cover star Margot Robbie, Natalie Portman, and Cynthia Erivo, but they weren’t the only ones who owned the night.

The 2020 Oscars are upon us, but instead of focusing on the nominations (which, for the most part, were disappointing) let’s focus on the fashion. Everyone from Laura Dern to Beanie Feldstein to Billie Eilish brought it tonight, February 9, on the red carpet. There were plenty of bold colors, cuts, and choices, but, of course, all in the framework of classic Oscars style. Sadly, we didn’t get anything as funky as Cher’s 1987 dress, but there were some interesting choices nonetheless. Even some of the men stepped it up and delivered more than your standard black tux (though, rest assured, there were still plenty of those).
