Rose McGowan Calls Natalie Portman's Oscars Cape Highlighting Female Directors ‘Offensive’

She calls Portman “part of the problem” with her “fake support of other women.”

“There is no law that says you need to hire women, work with women, or support women. By all means, you do you. But I am saying stop pretending you’re some kind of champion for anything other than yourself,” McGowan continued. “As for me, I’ll be over here raising my voice and fighting for change without any compensation. That is activism. Until you and your fellow actresses get real, do us all a favor and hang up your embroidered activist cloak, it doesn’t hang right.”

McGowan continued in her post, “I was at a Women in Film event that you spoke at once, Natalie. You reeled off depressing statistics and then we all went back to our salads. I quickly realized you and the other women speakers (and that joke of an organization) are just… frauds. You say nothing, you do nothing.”

Portman responded with a statement of her own, per The Hollywood Reporter. “I agree with Ms. McGowan that it is inaccurate to call me ‘brave’ for wearing a garment with women’s names on it. ‘Brave’ is a term I more strongly associate with actions like those of the women who have been testifying against Harvey Weinstein the last few weeks, under incredible pressure,” she said.

She also acknowledged the fact that she has not worked with a huge number of female directors over the course of her career. “It is true I’ve only made a few films with women. In my long career, I’ve only gotten the chance to work with female directors a few times—I’ve made shorts, commercials, music videos and features with Marya Cohen, Mira Nair, Rebecca Zlotowski, Anna Rose Holmer, Sofia Coppola, Shirin Neshat and myself,” Portman said. “Unfortunately, the unmade films I have tried to make are a ghost history.”

But, she says, that doesn’t account for all the projects that never went forward. “I have had the experience a few times of helping get female directors hired on projects which they were then forced out of because of the conditions they faced at work,” she said. “So I want to say, I have tried, and I will keep trying. While I have not yet been successful, I am hopeful that we are stepping into a new day.”

Director Marielle Heller said hers was one of those projects Portman is referencing.

Rose McGowan has not commented on Natalie Portman’s statement.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Wore a Cape to the 2019 State of the Union

At the 2019 State of the Union, female lawmakers, all in white, stood out among the more traditionally-suited crowd—a result of a call from the Democratic Women’s Working Group to wear white to President Donald Trump’s address to the nation, as an homage to the women’s suffrage movement. (Some men in Congress pinned white ribbons to their jackets in solidarity.) House Speaker Nancy Pelosi participated in the white-out, as did many new members of Congress, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York.

Ocasio-Cortez inspired plenty of social reactions throughout the speech, including her stone-faced reaction as President Trump criticized socialist policies (“We are born free, and we will stay free,” he said. “Tonight, we renew our resolve that America will never be a socialist country.”) The image of her and her fellow legislators standing up and cheering when he said, “No one has benefited more from our thriving economy than women, who have filled 58 percent of the newly created jobs last year,” also got people talking. And as she often has done on Capitol Hill, Ocasio-Cortez used fashion to send a message.

For her first State of the Union, Ocasio-Cortez joined the Democratic Women’s Working Group in wearing white to the State of the Union. And her interpretation of the dress code was… well, pretty epic.

Instead of a traditional suit, she chose a blazer cape and trousers. She accessorized with red lips and gold hoop earrings, like the ones she wore to be sworn in to Congress.

As soon as Ocasio-Cortez arrived with her guest—Ana María Archila, the woman who confronted Jeff Flake in an elevator during the Brett Kavanaugh hearings—Twitter started responding to the Congresswoman’s look.

On her jacket, Ocasio-Cortez wore three pins. She teased one of them ahead of the speech: a button that reads, “Well-behaved women rarely make history.”

She also wore a button with what appeared to be a picture of Jakelin Caal Maquin, the seven-year-old Guatemalan child who died while in Border Patrol custody last year. (Rep. Rashida Tlaib had one, too.)

And Ocasio-Cortez’s blazer cape? Twitter users speculated the Congresswoman procured it at Zara.

Dubbed Cape With Slits, it’s available in white and black, and is currently in stock for $89.90, if you want to channel your inner AOC.

Meghan Markle Just Wore a Cape Dress Fit for Actual Queens

Saturday was packed with royal activities for a certain Meghan Markle. She attended the Invictus Games Sydney reception in London early in the day with fiancé Prince Harry, and then the royal-to-be headed to her second official event with Queen Elizabeth II: the monarch’s 92nd birthday party. On Saturday night, the royal family gathered for a celebratory concert, to which Meghan wore a cape dress that looked fit for a queen. And, as it turns out, it actually is.

The Queen’s birthday concert was held at London’s Royal Albert Hall, where performers included Kylie Minogue, Sting, Shaggy, Shawn Mendes, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Anne-Marie, Craig David, Sir Tom Jones, and Donel Mangena. BBC One and BBC Radio 2 televised the concert, and proceeds went to a new charity called The Queen’s Commonwealth Trust, which will help “encourage young people to excel in areas like sports, education, health and the environment across the 53 Commonwealth countries,” according to People. (Prince Harry is the organization’s president, by the way.)

For the celebration, Meghan wore a $1,625 navy Stella McCartney Crewneck Cape-Front Belted Short Dress, along with a pair of $625 navy Manolo Blahnik BB Pointy Toe Pumps, and a Naeem Khan Armory Zodiac Clutch that rang in at $3,390. She looked—as usual—stunning in the streamlined look, which was a return to her more neutral style after she wore a bright green floral Self-Portrait dress earlier in the day.

This timeless cape dress style has popped up frequently in royal circles, too: Queen Mathilde of Belgium wore a similar cape dress in bright blue in 2014…
