Maisie Williams Has a Message for Fans Feeling ‘Uncomfortable’ About Arya’s Sex Scene

Last Sunday’s episode of Game of Thrones featured a divisive Arya Stark sex scene that everyone still seems to be talking about. You know the one: Arya and her longtime friend slash travel companion Gendry crossed paths for the first time in a while and decided they were ready to take things to the next level. It didn’t take long for the moment to go completely viral.

But while some people were glad to see Arya finally get something resembling a normal teen storyline, others were frustrated by the sexualization of a character who’s proved her autonomy time and time again. If you thought the scene was just awkward overall, Maisie Williams, who plays Arya Stark, has one necessary reminder: This whole process has been way more uncomfortable for her.

On Tuesday she tweeted some pretty hilarious insight: “if u feel uncomfortable just know that my mother and my step dad and my 2 sisters and my 4 brothers have all probably watched this too ahahakillmeehehe,”

OK, you win, Maisie. Having your family watch your character—who grew up before the world’s eyes—lose her virginity onscreen would be pretty uncomfortable.

“At first, I thought it was a prank,” Williams told Entertainment Weekly about the sex scene. “I was like, ‘Yo, good one.’ And [the showrunners were] like, ‘No, we haven’t done that this year.’ Oh f–k!”

In the end, though, she thought it was compelling as a new development for her character: “It was really interesting because it’s a very human relationship for Arya,” she also told EW. “This is something she’s stayed away from, an emotion we’ve never really seen her engage with.”

This isn’t the only Arya plot point fans are buzzing about: Many seem to think Podrick’s haunting song in Sunday’s episode predicted Arya’s death. We know just how unforgiving the show’s creators are, so we’re already preparing ourselves in case our favorite warrior is the next to go.

Grey's Anatomy 'Silent All These Years' Recap: Everyone Should See This Powerful Message About Consent

Leave it to a Shonda Rhimes show to give us one of the most definitive episodes of television about consent that I’ve ever seen. This week’s Grey’s Anatomy took on the topic from multiple angles—and the result was incredibly emotional, powerful, and, I hope, educational.

The episode centers around Dr. Jo Karev (Camilla Luddington) in two different storylines. In flashbacks, we see Jo meet her birth mother, the woman who abandoned her at a fire station as a baby. But after finally letting her mother know how much resentment and anger she still feels, Jo learns she was the product of the rape of her teenage mother.

Then, back at Grey Sloan Memorial, Jo meets a patient named Abby (Khalilah Joi), who she believes has been abused in a domestic situation. Jo, herself a victim of domestic abuse, handles the situation with care—and soon she learns Abby has also been sexually assaulted.

When Jo brings in another female doctor, Teddy Altman (Kim Raver), to help with the situation, they make sure Abby knows she is in a safe space where she can talk if she wants to. Eventually, Abby reveals she was raped after leaving a bar—but she’s afraid to tell her husband as well as the police, because she knows all too well that her actions may be twisted into a victim-blaming scenario. The portrayal of Abby’s reaction to her trauma is incredibly powerful to watch, and so is the doctors’ desire to give her agency in her treatment while holding their own emotions in check.

Once they begin collecting evidence for a rape kit (after Abby gives her OK), the process is shown in heartbreaking detail. What stood out to me is how the doctors ask their patient at each step if she’s ready to proceed. They do nothing until they hear her verbally say, “Yes.” And once they do have her permission, they are methodical yet still sensitive as they swab the bite marks on her skin and take samples from inside her body. It’s even more gut-wrenching when you consider that it’s possible some women may not receive the same kind of care. “What you did today, with Abby, that was not protocol…it should be,” Teddy later tells Jo.

But when it’s time to take Abby to surgery, she tells the doctors that every man she sees reminds her of her rapist. So the women of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital line the hallway with female faces—doctors, nurses, orderlies, administrative staff—and physically block male staff from entering space. All so Abby can feel safe. At this point, I sobbed. It was an amazing visual of women standing up for other women.

The show adds another layer of consent when Dr. Ben Warren (Jason Winston George) is shown having a talk about it with his adolescent stepson, Tuck. “You pay attention to the girl you’re with,” he tells the young man. “You need to care about her feelings, her joy, at least as much as you care about your own. And she gets to change her mind at any time. If she says ‘stop’ or stops having fun, you just plain stop. Time out. Game over.” It really is that simple—and I’m grateful to the show I’ve loved for all these years for stating it so plainly.

One big reason why Grey’s Anatomy was able to handle this episode in such a sensitive and multi-faceted way? Because it’s led by women, including Rhimes and showrunnner Krista Vernoff. This episode, aptly titled “Silent All These Years” after the Tori Amos song about a sexual assault, was also written by a woman, Elisabeth Finch, and directed by a woman, Debbie Allen. It was inspired, in part, by Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony in the Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court hearings. “How it didn’t mean anything, it hurt our souls,” Vernoff told Entertainment Weekly. “I went to the writers and said, ‘The message that has just been sent to all young women is that consent doesn’t matter. We have an opportunity here to teach men and women about consent and to talk about how lasting and impactful rape can be for generations.'”

Lena Headey Wrote the Kindest Message to Emilia Clarke About Her Brain Aneurysms

Game of Thrones star Lena Headey wrote a beautiful, supportive message to her costar Emilia Clarke, who revealed in a New Yorker essay on Thursday (March 21) she had suffered two brain aneurysms while filming the hit HBO show.

“It took me a while to know this woman (there are 64000 of us after all),” Headey posted on Instagram alongside a photo of Clarke. “Not until she spoke to me about her experience did I fully realize the warrior she truly is (MOD for real x209840000) she does really great things for causes that deserve it. She’s kind and determined and funny and aware. #Thursday’s MVP … Here’s to @emilia_clarke ?????⭐️⭐️⭐️?.”

MOD, for uninitiated into Game of Thrones, means Mother of Dragons, the nickname of Clarke’s character on the show.

Lena Headey plays Cersei Lannister on GoT, and Emilia Clarke plays Daenerys. Their characters hardly interact onscreen—they’ve shared only one scene—which is why Headey’s message is particularly exciting.

In her essay, Clarke outlines her emotional journey with the two brain aneurysms, which happened at such busy times in her life and career.

“I lost all hope,” Clarke writes. “I couldn’t look anyone in the eye. There was terrible anxiety, panic attacks. I was raised never to say, ‘It’s not fair’; I was taught to remember that there is always someone who is worse off than you. But, going through this experience for the second time, all hope receded. I felt like a shell of myself. So much so that I now have a hard time remembering those dark days in much detail. My mind has blocked them out. But I do remember being convinced that I wasn’t going to live.”

Read Clarke’s piece in its entirety here. Game of Thrones season eight premieres Sunday, April 14, at 8:00 P.M. ET on HBO.

Demi Lovato Just Posted a Powerful Message About Her Relapse

Demi Lovato took to Instagram Story on Friday afternoon, March 15, to open up about the relapse she experienced last summer.

“Today I would’ve had 7 years sober,” the singer wrote. In July 2018, news broke Lovato had suffered from an apparent overdose. The next month, she announced she was taking a step back from social media to heal and focus on her recovery. Lovato returned to Instagram in November 2018 with an important message about voting in the midterm elections, and in January 2019 she celebrated six months of sobriety.

“I don’t regret going out because I needed to make those mistakes but I must never forget that’s exactly what they were: mistakes,” Lovato continued on Instagram this afternoon, in reference to what happened over the summer. “Grateful that AA/NA never shuts the door on you no matter how many times you have to start your time over. I didn’t lose 6 years; I’ll always have that experience but now I just get to add to that time with a new journey and time count.”

She ended her Instagram Story with a message for people who are also struggling with addiction. “If you’ve relapsed and are afraid to get help again, just know it’s possible to take that step towards recovery,” she wrote. “If you’re alive today, you can make it back. You’re worth it.”

The speculation surrounding Lovato’s relapse has been nonstop. In December 2018, she attempted to shut down the chatter by tweeting (and later deleting), “Someday I’ll tell the world what exactly happened, why it happened, and what my life is like today…but until I’m ready to share that with people, please stop prying and making up shit that you know nothing about. I still need space and time to heal.”

Miley Cyrus Wrote a Hilarious Valentine's Day Message to Liam Hemsworth

Miley Cyrus kicked off her first Valentine’s Day married to Liam Hemsworth in the most Miley Cyrus way: by posting a hilarious meme.

The “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart” singer took to Instagram Stories Wednesday night (February 13) and posted a throwback photo of herself from the Bangerz Tour with the caption, “When it’s Valentine’s Day and bae says hi.” She also tagged Hemsworth and wrote “Love u.” When you see the photo, you’ll instantly understand why it’s funny.

Check out the meme for yourself, below:

Here’s the original photo, which was taken in Dublin back in May 2014. Ahhh, simpler times—when Cyrus’ stage prop of choice was a foam finger and she slid down a giant tongue at the top of her show. Take me back.

This isn’t the only racy message Miley Cyrus has sent Liam Hemsworth this week. On Monday, she attended the premiere of Hemsworth’s new movie Isn’t It Romantic by herself because he was sick, and she posted to Instagram, “Getting sick blows. But so do I. Get well soon babe. I love you.” Listen, everyone jumps out in February! It’s scientific fact.

Cyrus and Hemsworth tied the knot back in December, and they’ve made a few appearances together since then. Last month, they attended the G’Day USA Gala, where Hemsworth praised Cyrus while accepting the Excellence in Film Award. “Thank you to my beautiful wife,” he said. “You are a sweet, sweet angel.”

And just a few days before this, Cyrus wrote the sweetest note to Hemsworth for his birthday. “I love those little lines around your eyes when you laugh or look into the sun…. I love the way we speak in our own language. Sometimes with just a look,” she wrote on Instagram. “I love laying on the couch eating Chinese when we’re hung over from the night before. I love going to a random party and remembering basically everyone is fake AF out here and how lucky I am to share a life with someone so REAL. I love the way you always listen & the way that you care… (Even when it’s about RuPaul’s Drag Race.) I love having a teeth brushin’ partner & when I’m lazy how you’ll comb my hair.”

There’s a Secret Message in Ariana Grande’s 'Pete Davidson' You Totally Missed

Once upon a time (i.e: over the summer), Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson were just two infatuated twenty-somethings who got engaged after only a few weeks of dating. Of course, the couple has since split, but there’s an artifact of their relationship on the Internet that will always remind us of when times were good. I’m talking, obviously, about Grande’s song “Pete Davidson” from her album, Sweetener.

The track was a last-minute addition to Grande’s fourth studio album. Running at a little over one minute, it’s the shortest song on Sweetener but by far one of the most memorable. There are no direct references to Davidson on the song but rather just general musings about how Grande is happy in her relationship. “Universe must have my back/Fell from the sky into my lap/And I know you know that you’re my soulmate and all that,” she sings before the chorus of the song. “I’ma be happy, happy,” she then repeats several times before the tune comes to a close.

But there’s a hidden message in “Pete Davidson” even the most diehard Grande fans might have missed. It turns out the guitar chords in the song are B-A-E on a loop. So, in other words, bae.

“I was looking up Ariana Grande guitar chords (I don’t have a guitar) and discovered the chords to ‘Pete Davidson’ are just BAE over and over and I can’t believe I just wrote the Da Vinci Code,” the fan who first noticed this message tweeted.

Listen to the song for yourself, below, and relive a simpler time.
