Kesha Just Got the Most Powerful Message Tattooed on Her Fingers

Kesha’s latest powerful message isn’t in her lyrics: it’s on her fingers. The singer just revealed on Instagram that her newest tattoo is the words “LIVE FREE” spelled out across her fingers—a gesture that’s at once beautiful and badass for some intensely personal reasons.

As you’re probably aware, for the last few years Kesha’s been fighting various legal battles with mega-producer Dr. Luke, whom she accused of sexual assault and who is now countersuing her for making the allegation. In her original suit against him, she was also trying to get out of her contract, which stipulates that she can only produce new music with him and with Sony.

In the midst of all that, Kesha also entered rehab for an eating disorder, which is where her new album, Rainbow, started to take shape. As she wrote in a heartfelt essay for Refinery29: “Since those difficult and emotional days in rehab, I started imagining that one day I would put out a new record, and I would call it Rainbow. For a long time, I didn’t know if that idea was just a fantasy, a ghost to keep me waking up and actually getting out of my bed, or if it could actually come true. But I just held onto that idea because it was all I had…I know that this album saved my life.”

The legal situation with Kesha, record label Sony, and Dr. Luke is still complicated, and Dr. Luke’s countersuit continues, but Kesha was able to release Rainbow, and it’s reflective of the harrowing journey she’s gone through. In her first single, “Praying,” she prays for the absolution of those who have hurt her; in “Woman,” she finds power—and, yes, fun—in her gender.

If “live free” is her new motto, it makes total sense—and she’ll have a reminder every time she looks at her hands. As she wrote on Instagram, “funny how words take on such important meaning once you start living and find yourself looking for the perfect letters to make up the perfect word to make up the perfect feeling…..”

The Inspiring Message Behind Selena Gomez's $75 Choker

PHOTO: Picture Perfect / Splash News

It only takes a few taps on Instagram to see that Selena Gomez‘s style game has been next-level this summer. This past weekend was no exception: She stepped out in a black long-sleeved bodysuit and red skirt, both by minimalist label Khaite. What really caught our attention, though, was the choker she accessorized the outfit with—not only because it’s a subtle but chic addition to the look, but also because it sends a message we can stand behind.

Gomez’s exact gold-plated necklace is from the ethical and activism-minded brand Slow Factory, and bears the phrase, “We the people”—a reference to the U.S. Constitution. “I made the necklace shortly after [President Donald Trump’s travel ban on seven Muslim-majority countries] was announced, as my immigration lawyer advised me not to travel,” Céline Semaan, the label’s founder and designer (who’s originally from Lebanon), tells Glamour. “I reached out to the ACLU for a collaboration, showed them the prototype for the necklace and we took it from there,” she explains. The choker retails for $75, with 10% of the each purchase going directly to the ACLU.

Having someone with Selena-level star power wear your designs can have a huge difference for a small brand like Slow Factory. And Semaan notes that it’s already feeling the impact. “It was crazy—we got lots of orders [after Gomez wore the necklace], which means lots of donations to the ACLU,” she says. This kind of exposure is “huge,” Semaan adds,”because it gives us the opportunity to raise more money for the causes and the NGOs we work with.” In addition to the ACLU, Slow Factory has partnered with ANERA to raise money for refugee education in Lebanon and the WWF to fund the organization’s environmental preservation efforts.

“[Slow Factory’s] mission is to use fashion as a medium for social change,” says Semaan. “When we cast a wider net, we really impact more people and create a positive change.” Now that the brand has gotten a signal boost from Gomez, the designer hopes that the newfound attention “means that more people can wear [the necklace], continue to show support, and become fashion activists by funding important initiatives.”

With a single accessory, Gomez shared a message that feels more timely than ever (all the while supporting an emerging, female-owned brand)—though, it’s not totally surprising, seeing as this is the same person who sprinkled her latest designer collaboration with powerful affirmations for her fans. You can shop her exact necklace on Slow Factory’s website.
