Queen Elizabeth Sent a Message of Support for Meghan Markle's Home State of California

Queen Elizabeth has issued a royal statement directly to President Trump—and it’s a poignant one that addresses the current situation in granddaughter-in-law Meghan Markle’s home state of California. Wildfires have been destroying property and acreage in the state since November 8, when three destructive fires broke out. One, the so-called “Camp Fire,” in the northern part of the state, was still just 50 percent contained as of Friday night. Along the way, it’s taken down almost 10,000 homes and killed more than 70 people, making it the deadliest fire in California’s history (more than 1,000 people are still missing as well). The Woolsey Fire in Ventura County, thankfully, is at 82 percent containment as of Friday night, and the Hill Fire has been completely contained.

The situation, without overstatement, is dire. And Queen Elizabeth’s message to Trump is a heartfelt statement about the situation, expressing sympathy for those who have lost everything in the fires and paying tribute to the first responders putting their lives on the line to bring these blazes under control.

“Prince Philip and I offer our deepest sympathies to the people of California, who continue to suffer from the devastating fires across the state,” she wrote. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the victims, and to all those who have lost their homes and livelihoods. I pay tribute to the courage and dedication of the US emergency services and the volunteers that have provided support.”

Her Majesty’s words are a sharp turn from Trump’s initial rhetoric. As the fires broke out, rather than pledging resources to the area set ablaze, he blamed the problem on “forest mismanagement.”

“There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor,” he tweeted on November 10. “Billions of dollars are given each year, with so many lives lost, all because of gross mismanagement of the forests. Remedy now, or no more Fed payments!”

His tone seems to have shifted on Saturday, when he flew out to the state to see the destruction for himself, tweeting that he was looking forward to “being with our brave Firefighters, First Responders, and FEMA.”

The same day, the White House Twitter account reported that the U.S. Department of Agriculture had deployed “hundreds of personnel” and “dozens of air resources” to help with containing the remaining Camp and Woolsey fires.

Earlier on Saturday, the fires were also declared a public health emergency, with air quality in Northern California currently the worst in the world.

As Californians grapple with the fires—and begin the long, slow road to rebuilding and recovery—they could use any donations, products, or time volunteers can give. If you’re able to give even a small amount, community organizations are in need of resources. Check out our handy guide for where to donate.

Demi Lovato Just Returned to Instagram With an Important Message

In July Demi Lovato entered rehab after experiencing an overdose. At the time, she released a statement on Instagram that read, “I have always been transparent about my journey with addiction. What I’ve learned is that this illness is not something that disappears or fades with time.” She added, “I now need time to heal and focus on my sobriety and road to recovery. The love you have all shown me will never be forgotten, and I look forward to the day where I can say I came out on the other side.” Her candor about the experience has been credited with changing the conversation around addiction.

Lovato’s Instagram has been quiet since then, but today (November 6) she broke her silence to encourage people to vote.

“I am so grateful to be home in time to vote! One vote can make a difference, so make sure your voice is heard,” Lovato wrote in the caption. “Now go out and #VOTE!!!!”

Fans were quick to show their appreciation for the singer’s effort. Within 30 minutes of posting the photo, it had more than 1.5 million likes and thousands of comments.

If you haven’t voted yet but you’re feeling inspired by Lovato, there’s still time. Polls will remain open until at least 6:00 P.M. Find out when your local poll closes here, find your polling place.

Sabrina's Makeup in the 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina' Has a Hidden Message

You know witchy makeup when you see it: dark smoky eyes, sharp defined brows, and deep wine red or pitch black lips. And forget glowy skin: Instead of a shimmery highlighter or lively blush, it’s all undead pallor, all the time. It’s a look that’s equal parts sinister and chic, that’s marked an entire era of badass witches from The Craft to American Horror Story: Coven.

In Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, now streaming on Netflix, that same look is apparent on the witches of Greendale—except for its titular witch. Sabrina Spellman, played by Kiernan Shipka, begins her story facing a supernatural choice—whether she will pronounce her loyalty to Satan and become a full-witch in the Church of Night at her “Dark Baptism,” or remain a mortal—in noticeably natural makeup. She wears a creamy lip gloss and a rosy blush. Her eyes are unlined and shadow-free; her brows are combed with clear styling gel. That’s it.

Of course, that’s no accident. According to Candice Stafford-Bridge, the makeup department head for the show, Sabrina’s natural beauty look sets the stage for her transformation over the first season. Over the course of the show, her makeup—whether light and feathery or, eventually, vamped up with the other witches—is a barometer for her allegiance to the witch’s coven.

So that bare-faced look at the show’s beginning? It’s symbolic of her innocent state: She’s uncertain about leaving her high school life behind for full-time duty in the witching world and dubious of the Satanic goings-on in the Church of Night. “We keep her young and clean-looking,” Stafford-Bridge says. “And that was really, really important: There had to be room for the character to progress, because things happen.” And, oh, do they.

“I think the thing with making Kiernan less made-up is that before the Dark Baptism, she’s pure and she hasn’t chosen the so-called Dark Side,” she continues.

For the look, Stafford-Bridge prepped Shipka’s skin with Dermalogica Ultra Calming Mist, then mixed two Kjaer Weis cream foundations and Jane Iredale Dream Tint for a base to match her skin tone. Her rosy cheeks, meanwhile, come from either MAC’s Cream Blush in Rich Coral or MAC’s Powder Blush in Dusty Rose.

Then, there’s the lip, a rosy peach balm by Dior. “In the early episodes, her lips are the Dior Lip Glow in 004,” says Stafford-Bridge. “It gives her a really natural glow.”

When Sabrina finally swipes on some dark lipstick, though, pay attention: It’s a sign that she’s considering going all-in with the coven. Take a scene in the second episode, for example, where Sabrina calls on the Weird Sisters—a trio of dark witches decked out in Bite lipstick, Anastasia Beverly Hills Eye Palettes, and stacks of false eyelashes—to assist her in pranking a group of boys who bullied her mortal friend at school.

The witches lead the group of boys down into a mine that almost scares them to death. (We won’t spoil exactly what happens here, but that’s not an exaggeration.) Sabrina says she called on the Weird sisters seeking justice for a friend who was hurt, but her makeup says there’s more to the story. She arrives to hex the bullies in classically witchy makeup, courtesy of Tom Ford’s Bruised Plum purple lipstick and a black powder along her lashline. It’s dramatic, it’s dark, and it matches the Weird Sisters to a T. Her lipstick sends a message: She’s testing her powers and how much bad she’s willing to do.

Then, there’s Sabrina’s Dark Baptism (also in episode two), which falls on Halloween and Sabrina’s sixteenth birthday. She arrives at the ceremony in a white dress and a matte red Christian Louboutin Lipstick that Stafford-Bridge calls “sixties inspired.” It’s timeless, but more dressed-up than her everyday look. Here, her lipstick is both a nod to her signature color—red plays heavily in Sabrina’s wardrobe—and a signal that Sabrina may be more converted over to the church than we think. (We won’t give away too much here, but this episode…omg.)

Sabrina’s interactions with the coven increase over the season, but she’s still a student at Baxter High School by day, and her dark makeup is missing from many of her school-day scenes. “Even when we think that she’s maybe going dark, she still looks like the innocent 16-year-old with her friends in regular high school,” Stafford-Bridges adds.

So can we expect to see Sabrina in full-blown witch makeup by the season’s end? “She’s still battling it, so she’ll never look like the Weird Sisters,” Stafford-Bridge hints. “But if that does happen, you will see a change in her makeup.”

Kaley Cuoco Has a Message for Body Shamers Who Say She Looks Pregnant

For all those wondering whether or not Kaley Cuoco might be pregnant, the actress has an answer for you: “Shut up.”

On Tuesday, October 23, Cuoco posted a photo to Instagram of herself walking the InStyle awards red carpet with her sister. Seems innocent enough, right? Well, according to People, Cuoco was met with a significant amount of flak from people who stated it looked as though the actress was expecting.

But as quickly as the social media trolling started, Cuoco was even faster to shut it down. Posting a special message for the pregnancy police on her Instagram story, the actress addressed them once and for all. “So, because I’m in traffic I thought I’d take this time to comment on some Instagram trolls,” the Big Bang Theory star shared in her story. “I posted a picture this morning of my sister and I from an event last night and people said I looked pregnant.”

Cuoco went on to point out that no one would ever dare approach her with that line of questioning in person—so why the bravado online? “Would you ever walk up to someone on the street or at an event where they’re obviously dressed up and say, ‘Are you pregnant?’” the star asked in the post.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen social media users tear down a woman’s body via the comments section, nor is it the first time we’ve witnessed pregnancy trolling like this take shape. Just this past summer, Ashley Graham was met with a flood of Instagram comments questioning whether or not she was expecting when the model posted a video of herself dancing by her pool.

It’s a damaging habit that’s taken form in the digital age, and Cuoco isn’t here for it. “It’s just so comedic and shocking that people would ask that,” the actress continued in her story on Tuesday. And while Cuoco’s decision to have children is certainly no one’s business but the star’s own, she wrapped up her Instagram story by answering the burning question that so many of her followers apparently wanted to know.

“I’m not pregnant,” she clarified. “I guess it was a pregnant angle. Seriously, shut up.”

We can thank LA traffic for that epic rebuttal from the star—and to the social media users who think it’s OK to comment on a woman’s body: Let’s curb that behavior, shall we?

There's a Message in Brett Kavanaugh's 30 Mentions of Beer at the Senate Hearing

During a grueling eight-hour hearing in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford detailed the alleged assault she faced at the hands of Brett Kavanaugh while both were in high school, opened up about moving out of her home because of the death threats she’s received, and even managed to explain how the hippocampus works.

And what did Supreme Court judge nominee Brett Kavanaugh discuss when he finally took the stand? Beer, mostly. How he really, really, really likes it. So much so that he brought it up over 30 times during his testimony, according to a Buzzfeed count.

When we were first introduced to Kavanaugh, he was touted as a boy scout of sorts. A family man. A Christian. A virgin. But the version we met on Thursday was a beer-drinking, fun-loving guy, as Kavanaugh described his younger self (around the time of Ford‘s reported attack) as just a typical boy who loved basketball, getting good grades, and going to the occasional party.

As he put it, “I drank beer with my friends. Almost everyone did.”

“Sometimes I had too many beers. Sometimes others did. I liked beer. I still like beer. But I did not drink beer to the point of blacking out, and I never sexually assaulted anyone.” Meaning, he was just a boy being a boy, doing boyish things—nothing more.

Driving home his preference for ales over harder liquors could have been a device to downplay the allegations that Kavanaugh was known as a heavy drinker. A college friend of his, Liz Swisher, recently told The Washington Post that “Brett was a sloppy drunk, and I know because I drank with him. I watched him drink more than a lot of people. He’d end up slurring his words, stumbling. There’s no medical way I can say that he was blacked out.… But it’s not credible for him to say that he has had no memory lapses in the nights that he drank to excess.”

How could the allegations against him be viable, if he was only casually drinking brewskis with his bros? is what Kavanaugh could have been hoping we’d wonder. Well, if he spends anywhere close to the amount of time he talks about beer actually drinking the damn beverage, let’s just say gravity wouldn’t be his friend.

But regardless of Kavanaugh’s motives—there’s one thing we can actually all agree on: Kavanaugh f*cking loves beer!

So in this spirit of bipartisan agreement, we’ve compiled a list—without comment—of the top 10 times Kavanaugh spoke about his beloved drink of choice while testifying:

1. “Listen to the people I’ve grown up with, and worked with, and played with, and coached with, and dated, and taught, and gone to games with, and had beers with.”

2. “When I was in town, I spent much of my time working, working out, lifting weights, playing basketball, or hanging out and having some beers with friends as we talked about life, and football, and school and girls.”

3. “The calendars show a few weekday gatherings at friends’ houses after a workout or just to meet up and have some beers.”

4. “I drank beer with my friends.”

5. “Sometimes I had too many beers.”

6. “I liked beer.”

7. “I still like beer.”

8. “Anyone who’s known me like a lot of these people behind me, have known me my whole life, know, you know, I got a weak stomach, whether it’s with beer or with spicy food or anything.”

9. “I like beer. I don’t know if you do. Do you like beer, Senator, or not? What do you like to drink?”

10. “No…. We drank beer and…so did, I think, the vast majority of people our age at the time. In any event, we drank beer and still do, so, whatever, yeah,”

Ah. Boys will be boys. Enjoy your beers this weekend.

Elizabeth Warren Has a Powerful Message for Sexual Assault Survivors Watching the Kavanaugh Hearing

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D—Mass.) on Thursday spoke with Glamour exclusively about the historic Senate hearing involving Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and the Republican push to move forward with his confirmation, calling it “fundamentally wrong.”

At the Hart Senate Office building, where Kavanaugh’s accuser Christine Blasey Ford was also testifying, Warren stood alongside Ford’s supporters, telling Glamour that she was, “here with people of conscience who believe that when a woman comes forward that she has a right to be listened to, and there needs to be a full investigation.”

“The fact that Republicans want to go forward treating this woman and other women who have come forward as if their claims don’t matter is an insult to every single woman in this country,” she said. “It is fundamentally wrong.”

Ford appeared in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday morning to give her testimony of an event that she says occurred more than 30 years ago, when Kavanaugh allegedly pinned her to a bed, attempted to take her clothes off and covered her mouth with his hand as she screamed.

“I believed he was going to rape me. It was hard for me to breathe and I believed that Brett was going to accidentally kill me,” she told the committee.

As she spoke, people supportive of Ford gathered outside in the atrium of the Hart Senate Office building. Many listened to the simulcast of the professor’s testimony on their cell phones, at times looking anguished or openly crying. Some silently held their fists in the air; others wore strips of tape over their mouths.

When asked if she believed that Kavanaugh would still be confirmed despite multiple women accusing him of sexual assault, Warren said, “I don’t know. I truly don’t know. But I do know that people across this country are paying attention, and that this is not alright.”

She also went on to criticize her Republican colleagues, saying, “this is a moral question.”

“The fact that [Republicans] want to ram this through and not have an investigation, that [Senator] Mitch McConnell goes in front of his big donors and says I’m going to ram this thing through, it’s not right. That treats every woman with disrespect. It treats everyone who has been a victim of sexual assault with disrespect. It treats human beings as if their claims are meaningless and that powerful men can do whatever they want to do. And it’s just not right.”
