The Inspiration for Ariana Grande’s New Song Is So Relatable

Ariana Grande has done it again, people. The Thank U, Next singer has unleashed yet another bop into the world. This one’s called “Boyfriend,” and it was cowritten by the duo Social House, with whom she frequently collaborates. Sonically it’s right on par with the songs she released on both the Sweetener and Thank U, Next albums: soulful and R&B-tinged with an incredibly catchy pop chorus. I’ve already listened to it 15 times, and I haven’t even had breakfast yet.

Fans shouldn’t read too much into the lyrics on this one. There don’t appear to be any hidden references to Grande’s ex-boyfriends the way there were on the Thank U, Next album. Rather, this breezy track is all about the push and pull of being casual with someone but wanting more. “You ain’t my boyfriend (Boyfriend) / And I ain’t your girlfriend (Girlfriend) / But you don’t want me to see nobody else,” Grande sings in the chorus.

Grande took to Twitter on Thursday night, August 1, and revealed the inspiration behind the song. “Well, I feel like this song captures a common theme in the lives of so many people I know,” Grande wrote. “People want to feel love but don’t want to define their relationship and have trouble fully committing or trusting or allowing themselves to fully love someone even though they want to.”

She continued, “We wanted to make something uplifting that captures that feeling of being afraid to take the leap and trust, being afraid of being hurt or feeling like you won’t be enough for that person…but also how it feels to have a crippling crush on someone.”

And as if the song weren’t enough, Grande also dropped the video for “Boyfriend.” In it Grande and Michael “Mikey” Foster from Social House play jealous friends with benefits who get inexplicably angry when they see the other flirting with someone else. At one point Grande pulls out a literal bow and arrow and…well, just watch it for yourself, below. The 2020 VMAs is already shaking.

Naturally, fans are living for both this song and video:

Thank you, Ariana Grande, for blessing my weekend with yet another banger.

Oops, Ariana Grande’s New Tattoo Has a Mistake

Ariana Grande just wanted to get a tattoo that said “7 Rings” in Japanese kanji, but the world had other plans. And by the world, I mean the ink was just too painful for Grande to sit through fully. This, in a nutshell, is the saga of Grande’s latest tattoo, which I’m calling, “7 Rings—No Wait, Actually, 7 Tiny Grills.”

It all started with the best intentions. Grande decided to commemorate her latest banger “7 Rings,” which iconically references The Sound of Music, with a new tattoo. And the title of the song scripted in Japanese kanji seemed like an easy way to go. Cut to a few hours later: Grande posts a now-deleted pic of the tattoo to Instagram, and Japanese fans notice something hilarious. The ink doesn’t actually translate to “7 Rings” but “Shichirin,” which means “small Japanese barbecue grill.”

Her fans, naturally, are losing it over this.

Grande owned up to the mistake in a series of since-deleted tweets. “Indeed, I left out ‘つの指’ which should have gone in between,” Grande tweeted. “It hurt like fuck n still looks tight. I wouldn’t have lasted one more symbol lmao. But this spot also peels a ton and won’t last so if I miss it enough I’ll suffer thru the whole thing next time.”

And just to clarify, she confirmed she’s also a “huge fan of tiny BBQ grills.”

Ariana Grande released “7 Rings” and its accompanying music video on Friday, January 18. The song is currently number-one on Billboard‘s Hot 100, continuing the streak she started with “Thank U, Next” in November 2018. Her fifth studio album, also titled Thank U, Next drops Friday, February 8, and comes just months after her fourth record, Sweetener. She’ll tour both albums starting this summer—right after she headlines Coachella, of course.

There’s a Secret Message in Ariana Grande’s 'Pete Davidson' You Totally Missed

Once upon a time (i.e: over the summer), Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson were just two infatuated twenty-somethings who got engaged after only a few weeks of dating. Of course, the couple has since split, but there’s an artifact of their relationship on the Internet that will always remind us of when times were good. I’m talking, obviously, about Grande’s song “Pete Davidson” from her album, Sweetener.

The track was a last-minute addition to Grande’s fourth studio album. Running at a little over one minute, it’s the shortest song on Sweetener but by far one of the most memorable. There are no direct references to Davidson on the song but rather just general musings about how Grande is happy in her relationship. “Universe must have my back/Fell from the sky into my lap/And I know you know that you’re my soulmate and all that,” she sings before the chorus of the song. “I’ma be happy, happy,” she then repeats several times before the tune comes to a close.

But there’s a hidden message in “Pete Davidson” even the most diehard Grande fans might have missed. It turns out the guitar chords in the song are B-A-E on a loop. So, in other words, bae.

“I was looking up Ariana Grande guitar chords (I don’t have a guitar) and discovered the chords to ‘Pete Davidson’ are just BAE over and over and I can’t believe I just wrote the Da Vinci Code,” the fan who first noticed this message tweeted.

Listen to the song for yourself, below, and relive a simpler time.
