Eva Mendes Just Gave a Rare Interview About Ryan Gosling

Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling are a notoriously private couple, so it’s exciting when either of them opens up about their relationship. Mendes last did this in February, talking specifically about how her family celebrates their Cuban heritage. But in a new interview with Women’s Health, the actress gives a little more insight into her relationship with Gosling. Spoiler alert: They’re still very much in love.

In fact, it was Mendes’ love for Gosling that changed her mind about having children in the first place. (The couple has two daughters, Esmeralda and Amanda.) “It was the furthest thing from my mind,” Mendes tells Women’s Health about having kids. Then, she says, “Ryan Gosling happened. I mean, falling in love with him. Then it made sense for me to have…not kids, but his kids. It was very specific to him.”

Fast-forward several years, and Gosling and Mendes are parenting pros, though she says they’re “just starting to get out of survival mode”: “I’m starting to feel like a person again.”

She credits both her and Gosling’s families for helping them through this “survival mode.” “We have an amazing support group: Ryan’s mom, my mom, Ryan’s and my sisters,” Mendes says. “It’s a village that helped us. My heart goes out to women who do this alone. I basically come from a single-parent household; although I love my dad, my mom mostly raised four of us on her own.”

Gosling gives Mendes plenty of credit too. In his acceptance speech for La La Land at the 2017 Golden Globes, he thanked her for raising their daughter and carrying their second while he was filming. All this happened in tandem with Mendes’ brother, Juan Carlos, fighting—and losing—a battle with cancer. Gosling ultimately dedicated his award to Juan.

Watching this on screen, Mendes says, was “like a dream.” “What I heard was that he said my brother’s name. It was the most beautiful gesture, and I had no idea Ryan was going to say it.”

'Riverdale' Star Camila Mendes Used an Actual Pancake to Blend Her Makeup

There’s a new brunch beauty hack we never knew we needed, courtesy of Riverdale star Camila Mendes. An Instagram story posted on Friday by her costar Cole Sprouse captures the actress sitting with a plate of breakfast food at Pop’s Diner on the show’s set—when all of a sudden, she grabs a pancake and uses it to blend out her foundation.

Although we definitely don’t suggest trying it yourself—it seems like a waste of a delicious pancake, to be honest—it’s not the strangest thing people have used to blend their makeup: Ambitious beauty Instagrammers have tried all kinds of makeup sponge alternatives, including socks, tomatoes, and even a bra-insert. At one point, people had also made a thing out of wrapping beauty blenders in condoms.

Still, the video is gold, thanks to just how casual she is about repurposing her breakfast order. There’s no audio in Sprouse’s short clip, but you don’t need it to appreciate how Mendes gives “pancake makeup” a whole new meeting.

Mendes usually charms us with her hilarious social media game of trolling reported Riverdale lovebirds Sprouse and Lili Reinhart (we’re still laughing at her third wheel meme from the movie Ghost). But she’s not the only Riverdale star with a thing for makeup tips: Earlier this year, Glamour had Reinhart weigh in on several online beauty tutorials inspired by her character Betty Cooper’s looks on the show. We’ll have to wait and see if she has anything to say about using pancakes as makeup blenders.

Camila Mendes Says Seeking Help for Her Bulimia 'Changed My Life'

Almost exactly one year ago, Camila Mendes opened up for the first time on social media about her past struggles with disordered eating, an admission she made in tandem with announcing her collaboration with Project HEAL, a nonprofit dedicated to providing resources and funding to young people seeking treatment for eating disorders. Since then, she’s continued to speak candidly about her experiences with bulimia, as well as her recent decision to stop dieting once and for all. In her cover interview for the November 2018 issue of Shape, the Riverdale star spoke about how she’s recovering from years of disordered eating, and what made her decide to share this process with her millions of fans and followers.

“I’ve struggled with bulimia. It happened a little bit in high school and again when I was in college. Then it came back when I started working in this industry with fittings all the time and watching myself on camera. I had such an emotional relationship with food and anxiety about everything I put into my body,” Mendes said.“I was so scared of carbs that I wouldn’t let myself eat bread or rice ever. I’d go a week without eating them, then I would binge on them, and that would make me want to purge. If I ate a sweet, I would be like, ‘Oh my God, I’m not going to eat for five hours now.’ I was always punishing myself. I was even anxious about healthy food: Did I eat too much of the avocado? Did I have too many fats for one day? I was consumed with the details of what I was eating, and I always felt as if I was doing something wrong.”

About a year ago, the 24-year-old decided it was time to seek help. “I went to a therapist, and she recommended a nutritionist as well, and seeing both of them changed my life. So much of the anxiety I had about food went away when I started learning more about nutrition. My nutritionist completely cured my fear of carbs. She was like, ‘You need a balanced amount of good, healthy carbs in your life. Have a piece of toast in the morning; have some quinoa at lunch. When you’re eating a little of them all the time, you won’t have this crazy urge to binge. You won’t be scared of carbs anymore because you’re going to realize that eating them isn’t going to make you gain weight,'” Mendes said. “She also cured my addiction to dieting. I was always on some kind of weird diet, but I haven’t been on one since. I’m very proud of myself.”

And while the actor said she still faces some of the same insecurities she did before, she’s found ways to shut them down. “The voices in my head never completely go away. They’re just way quieter now. Every once in a while I’ll look at myself in the mirror and think, ‘Ugh, I don’t like the way that looks.’ But then I’ll just drop it. I don’t let it consume me,” she said. “I think it’s natural to judge or be critical of yourself. Everyone does it. But you can make the decision on the spot that you’re going to conquer it. In those moments I’ll look at myself and say, ‘You’re fine. You look good. This is your prime, so enjoy it.'”

It was that conscious decision to start loving herself just as she is that inspired Mendes to be more open with her followers. “It just felt so necessary for me to speak about those things,” she said. “I realized that I have this platform, and young women and men who look up to me, and there is a tremendous power to do something positive with it. It was definitely a very vulnerable thing to put that out there to almost 12 million people on social media. But that’s who I am. That’s me being authentically myself.” She continued, “As actors, yes, we bring joy to people. But for me, it’s also about what I’m doing for the world, what I’m contributing on a larger scale.”

Camila Mendes Might Have Just Confirmed That Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse Are Dating

Who doesn’t love a good Instagram meme account? It’s not just us—celebs apparently get a kick from them too. That extends to a certain Riverdale star, Camila Mendes, who by light of a very telling comment buried in the comments section of a @mytherapistsays post, might have just confirmed that her fellow co-stars, Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse are dating.

If you haven’t kept up on the Reinhart-Sprouse off-screen saga, which, TBH, is just as mysterious as Riverdale itself: All signs point to them dating—some heartfelt birthday posts, flirty Instagram banter, and globe-trotting vacations—for several months now, though neither half of the couple has confirmed it.

That hasn’t stopped their co-stars from joining in the fun of the are-they or aren’t-they reports. Remember KJ Apa photobombing their adorable picture at the Teen Choice Awards last weekend? And when Apa’s on-screen girlfriend Mendes came across a “when you third wheel so much you basically become part of the relationship,” meme, it seems like she couldn’t resist tagging her Riverdale besties. A lot of us can probably relate to that third wheel situation, and the eagle-eyed pros over at @commentsbycelebs spotted Mendes chiming in on Friday with a hard same. “@lilireinhart @colesprouse we’re such a cute couple,” she commented on the meme that featured a scene from Ghost.

Cute, right? We kind of wish we were third-wheeling on the adventures of these two ourselves. As for her comment: It could confirm everything or it could confirm nothing—Reinhart and Sprouse could just be super-close platonically. But until one of them says for sure, we’ll just have to keep our eyes out for confirmation of their status.

'Riverdale' Star Camila Mendes Opens Up About Struggling With an Eating Disorder

PHOTO: Robby Klein/Getty Images

Riverdale star Camila Mendes plays the mysterious, confident Veronica Lodge onscreen, but she isn’t afraid to let her guard down in real life—even when it comes to talking about the tough, personal stuff. On Friday, Mendes revealed that she has struggled with symptoms of an eating disorder in the past, and that her sister suffered with an eating disorder for years as they grew up. In a powerful Instagram post, she explained that she’s partnering with Project HEAL to help raise money for others seeking to help with their own eating disorders.

Project HEAL was founded in 2008 by Liana Rosenman and Kristina Saffran, who met each other during treatment for anorexia. They came together to start the nonprofit to help others who were suffering but couldn’t afford treatment—sadly, many insurance plans don’t provide adequate coverage for eating disorders. (Rosenman and Saffran, by the way, were 2011 honorees in Glamour’s young women of the year list).

“I can say from experience that eating disorders are serious mental illnesses,” Mendes wrote in her post. “Growing up, I watched my big sister suffer from one for many years, and I’ve experienced periods in my life when I’ve suffered symptoms as well. I’m joining Project HEAL to help break the stigma associated with eating disorders.”

Mendes will attend the [Project HEAL San Francisco Gala] on Saturday night to auction off a day on the Riverdale set. The money will go to those in need of treatment.

There’s been a recent cultural shift when it comes to talking about eating disorders, especially in pop culture, with high-profile projects and celebrities helping to shape an honest and empowering cultural concersation. This year’s To the Bone starred Lily Collins as a young woman struggling with anorexia. The film also led Collins to open up about her real life struggles with the illness.

Demi Lovato also got candid about disordered eating in her documentary, Simply Complicated. And Pretty Little Liars star Troian Bellisario wrote, directed, and starred in her film Feed, which tells her own story about her experience with anorexia.

These hard-hitting, personal depictions of what it’s actually like to deal with an eating disorder are helping to shine light on a formerly taboo subject—and it’s wonderful that these celebrity women are using their platforms to lead the way in continuing to break down the stigma surrounding them.
