Melania Trump Unveiled Her New Blond Hair on Fox News


Melania Trump took her new blond hair and not-so-new complaints about the media to Fox News this week, submitting to a sit-down interview with host Sean Hannity on Wednesday.

In their conversation, Trump told Hannity that the greatest hardship she’s faced since she’s been in the White House is the “opportunists” who’ve used her name and the Trump brand to “advance themselves.” Perhaps in an effort to channel her own #BeBest initiative, which aims to curb bullies online and seems to have had no effect on her own husband, she did not name names but she did call out journalists, comedians, celebrities, and authors for their supposed behavior.

Now it’s news to no one that FLOTUS takes issue with how she and her husband are treated in the press. But what did make waves on the internet? Trump’s new look. The erstwhile brunette trotted out a fresh set of highlights, and Twitter took notice.

Of course a woman is free to switch up her hair (or wear a Zara jacket that seems to suggest a certain disregard for a national crisis on the border) whenever she pleases, but if that woman is Melania Trump and her new shade now falls between Donald Trump Russet Potato and Ivanka Trump Daffodil on the color wheel, people will have opinions.

And some shut out all the noise and did just as Trump requested in another portion of the interview. The media, she said, “likes to focus on gossip and I would like them to focus on the substance and what we do, not just about the nonsense.”

For at least one journalist the point was well-taken! Never mind the hair! Or the comparisons to other women in the administration or on Fox News. Let’s concentrate on what matters:

Bette Midler Sparks Controversy with Vulgar Melania Trump Tweet


Bette Midler has never held back from sharing political topics on her social media accounts, but a recent tweet about First Lady Melania Trump has the iconic performer taking more heat than usual.

The tweet in question, posted on November 14, includes an old photo of FLOTUS from her modeling days—specifically a shoot for British GQ back in 2000, according to People. In it, Mrs. Trump is wearing what looks to be a clear plastic bikini adorned with metal accouterments in the cockpit of an airplane. Midler’s caption reads, “The dry cleaning bill for the upholstery on Air Force One must be insane. #FLOTITS”

To say that many on Twitter were outraged might be a mild understatement. “You know what? Love you, hate what she stands for but NO. Attack her values or lack thereof 100 percent,” one user wrote. “But shaming over showing her body for money when I stand against misogyny makes me uncomfortable no matter the politics of the target.” Another said, “What a crass and inelegant remark. Perhaps upbringing is harder to overcome than previously thought. Money hasn’t bought you class, Betty.”

Others referenced cyber-bullying and the First Lady’s efforts to combat it with her Be Best campaign.

It wasn’t all haters, though—some Midler supporters found the post funny. “Relax people! Bette’s a comedian with every right to make a joke about that ghastly outfit. I wish #JoanRivers were still around to chime in,” a Twitter user wrote. “Now it’s the right wing who is being overly PC…THIS is bullying? Hypocrites.”

“You’re getting a lot of flack for this tweet from fans,” said another. “Not from this fan, I thought it was hysterical. Melania offers nothing for young women to inspire them.

Neither Midler nor Trump’s office has made any further comment.

Melania Trump Says She 'Doesn't Always Agree' With Her Husband


Melania Trump said in an exchange with reporters that she doesn’t always agree with everything her husband, President Donald Trump, says and does. And

While wrapping up her first international tour as First Lady, Melania answered questions from reporters while sitting outside the pyramids in Giza, Egypt. Some wanted to know just what kind of influence she really has over her husband.

“Some people interpret some of the decisions you’ve made, such as coming to Africa and some of your tweets, as a way of sort of not necessarily undermining but talking at him a little bit, trying to influence him. Can you talk about that?” one reporter asked.

“Well, I don’t always agree [with] what he thinks, and I tell him that. I give him my honest opinion and honest advice,” she said adding that “sometimes he listens, sometimes he doesn’t.”

However, she also wanted to make it clear that she has her “own voice and my own opinions and it’s very important for me that I express what I feel.” In the end, she noted, he’s the President and does what he likes.

A reporter then asked if she ever asked her husband to “put down his phone.” She quickly replied “yes,” which elicited laughter from both the First Lady and the reporters on hand.

As well as explaining how her relationship with her husband works, Melania also let her feelings be known about the appointment of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

“What I will say, if we’re talking about the Supreme Court and Judge Kavanaugh, I think he’s highly qualified for the Supreme Court,” she said. “I’m glad that Dr. Ford was heard; I’m glad that Judge Kavanaugh was heard. The FBI investigation was done, it’s completed, and [the] Senate voted.”

When pressed on if she believed Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, Melania remained evasive, but added, “I think all the victims—we need to help all the victims, no matter what kind of abuse they had, but I am against any kind of abuse or violence.”

Her trip was also not without fashion controversies. While visiting the Sheldrick Wildlife Elephant Project in Kenya, the first lady topped her outfit with a white pith helmet. The helmet has long been associated with colonial rule, particularly in Africa, and are a symbol of oppression.

When asked about the fashion choice, Melania simply replied, “That’s very important what I do, what we’re doing with USAID and what I do with my initiatives, and I wish people would focus on what I do, not what I wear.”

Melania Trump Responds to Kavanaugh Hearings: "I Think He's Highly Qualified"


Throughout the past two weeks, much of the country’s headlines have surrounded Judge Brett Kavanaugh as the Supreme Court nominee’s confirmation hearings have proceeded onward toward his final confirmation vote scheduled for this afternoon. On Thursday, September 27, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, a professor from Palo Alto University, testified in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee with an emotional, detailed account of a sexual assault, allegedly by Kavanaugh, in 1982. It’s an allegation that Kavanaugh has continuously, vehemently denied. Thus far, President Donald Trump has stood by his initial endorsement of Kavanaugh, taking to Twitter on the day of the Committee hearing to double down on his nomination.

Meanwhile, across the globe, First Lady Melania Trump has spent much of the past week on a solo international tour of Africa—her first since her husband took office—traveling to Ghana, Malawi, Kenya, and Egypt with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The White House has positioned this trip as an opportunity for the First Lady to learn more about “how the U.S. can play a role in providing assistance to help countries become self-sufficient” with a particular focus on “maternal and newborn care in hospitals [and] education for children.” While in Egypt on the tail end of her travels, Trump was asked by reporters if she agrees with her husband’s continued support of Supreme Court nominee Judge Kavanaugh.

“What I will say, if we’re talking about the Supreme Court and Judge Kavanaugh, I think he’s highly qualified for the Supreme Court,” she said. “I’m glad that Dr. Ford was heard; I’m glad that Judge Kavanaugh was heard. The FBI investigation was done, it’s completed, and [the] Senate voted.”

When pressed by the reporter as to whether she herself believed Dr. Ford’s allegations against Kavanaugh, the First Lady initially declined to answer but returned to the question with a general statement: “I think all the victims—we need to help all the victims, no matter what kind of abuse they had, but I am against any kind of abuse or violence.”

First Lady Melania Trump Wore a Pith Helmet During Tour of Africa


First Lady Melania Trump is currently on her first international solo trip, visiting various countries in Africa over the course of a week, and it hasn’t been without a few raised eyebrows.

Once again, FLOTUS’ wardrobe—particularly, one white hat—has come under scrutiny. This morning in Kenya, she visited the Sheldrick Wildlife Elephant Project wearing a white button-down, khaki pants, and tall boots. By the afternoon, to go on a tour of Nairobi National Park, she had added another item to her outfit: a pith helmet.

Quickly, people across the globe pointed out the jarring image, as pith helmets have long been associated with colonial rule, particularly in Africa and parts of Asia and the Middle East, and are considered a symbol of oppression.

Over the course of her time in the White House, Mrs. Trump’s fashion has gotten a lot of attention, with the public reading into the meaning behind every wardrobe choice, even as FLOTUS declines to offer any. Still, many have followed it closely: The New York Times reports that the hashtag #FLOTUSinAfricaBingo, started by a political science professor in California, is tracking what could be interpreted as insensitive behavior, from outfits to activities, during FLOTUS’ trip.

The White House has yet to release a statement on the pith helmet. The East Wing did release an official summary of the trip to Kenya, though, with FLOTUS saying: “The hospitality that I received made the experience so special. I was awed by the beauty of Nairobi National Park and was very interested to learn more about Kenya’s conservation efforts. The Nest is a prime example of what it means to protect and nurture our next generation—seeing their efforts shape the lives of so many children is something I will never forget. I look forward to visiting again in the future.”

First Lady Melania Trump Spoke at a Cyberbullying Summit While the President Tweeted Insults


First Lady Melania Trump is once again speaking out about one of the key components of her Be Best initiative: cyberbullying. But her comments are ringing a little ironic to many, given her husband’s propensity to, well, cyberbully.

Trump delivered her remarks on Monday at a cyberbullying prevention summit in Maryland, stressing the “responsible” use of social media platforms. “I know many of you are here representing social media companies, federal agencies, educational organizations, youth programs, and law enforcement,” she said. “I also know we share one goal—to pave a smooth way forward for our children, our next generation. I launched my Be Best campaign in May, with a focus on the many issues facing children today—one of them being the safe and responsible use of social media.”

She continued with what proved to be one the most discussed lines of her brief speech, especially since Donald Trump’s presidency has been riddled daily with Twitter attacks posted from his official account: “In today’s global society, social media is an inevitable part of our children’s daily lives. It can be used in many positive ways, but can also be destructive and harmful when used incorrectly. That is why Be Best chooses to focus on the importance of teaching our next generation how to conduct themselves safely and in a positive manner in an online setting.”

As if on cue (and in yet another seemingly public contradiction) President Trump spent part of his morning tweeting insults at Robert Mueller and former CIA Director John Brennan, using language like “disgraced,” “discredited,” “hack,” and “worst CIA Director in our country’s history.”

The First Lady has been taking heat for her cyberbullying platform since she first spoke about it during the 2016 campaign—and it certainly isn’t going to go away when Donald Trump’s tweets keep presenting the couple at opposite sides of the issue’s spectrum.

It didn’t take long for people on social media to call out this latest round of contradictions—and for the First Lady’s spokeswoman to fire back. “Rather than dissecting her remarks, let’s focus on the countless children who struggle w bullying & online safety each day,” Stephanie Grisham tweeted in response to criticism.

The White House pool reporters traveling with the First Lady asked why she continues to be engaged in the cyberbullying issue when the President uses Twitter to insult his detractors (and then some). Grisham replied: “The First Lady’s presence at events such as today’s cyberbullying summit elevates an issue that is important to children and families across this country. She is aware of the criticism but it will not deter her from doing what she feels is right. The President is proud of her commitment to children and encourages her in all that she does.”

Still, it’s hard not to question if the First Lady is again publicly contradicting her husband, or if she just doesn’t see the initiative as irony.
