Simone Biles Fires Back at USA Gymnastics' Happy Birthday Tweet By Asking for An ‘Independent Investigation’

Simone Biles, one of the greatest athletes of all time, turned 23 years old this Saturday, March 14. On Instagram, Biles shared a sweet snap with fans saying she was excited and “ready for my Jordan year!”

To honor the Olympian, USA Gymnastics also sent a tweet to the star (though they tagged the wrong account) saying, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the most decorated gymnast of all time, @simonebiles! We know you will only continue to amaze us and make history!”

However, Biles wasn’t amused by the tribute from the organization that recently offered a settlement to athletes who have sued the organization over sexual abuse suffered at the hands of sports doctor Larry Nassar. In response to the tweet, Biles fired back with a birthday request. “How about you amaze me and do the right thing…have an independent investigation,” she tweeted.

This isn’t the first time Biles has requested the organization take further action. In February, following USA Gymnastics’ announcement that it will give $215 million to sexual assault survivors in an effort to settle lawsuits over its failure to protect them from Nassar, Biles tweeted that more needed to be done.

“Ugh at the airport,” she tweeted. “Heading to team camp. Still want answers from USAG and USOPC. Wish they BOTH wanted an independent investigation as much as the survivors & I do. Anxiety high. Hard not to think about everything that I DON’T WANT TO THINK ABOUT!!! “

As of Sunday, her tweet had more than 428,000 likes and fellow gymnastics Olympian Aly Raisman took to Instagram to praise her teammate. “This. Is. AWESOME. @simonebiles I love you!!!!” Raisman wrote in the caption of a screenshot of Biles’ tweet.

Biles, who shared that she was also abused by Nassar, isn’t alone in calling out the need for an independent investigation. In 2019, a bipartisan Senate committee announced at the conclusion of its own 18-month investigation that both USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee “knowingly concealed abuse by Larry Nassar, leading to the abuse of dozens of additional amateur athletes from summer 2015 to September 2016.” The report added, the organizations and Michigan State had a chance to stop Nassar and “failed to do so.”

Following the investigation’s rulings, and just prior to competing in the 2019 U.S. Gymnastics Championships, Biles told reporters, “They couldn’t do one damn job. You had one job. You literally had one job, and you couldn’t protect us. And it’s just really sad because every time I go to the doctor or training, I get worked on and I don’t want to get worked on, but my body hurts. I’m 22. At the end of the day, that’s my fifth rotation, and I have to go do therapy, but it’s just hard, and we try to work through it, but it’ll take some time.

She added, “I’m strong, I’ll get through it, but it’s hard.”

Chrissy Teigen Apologizes for ‘Tone Deaf and Icky’ Tweet About Her Mom's Spending

Chrissy Teigen, prolific tweeter and all-around national treasure, is never afraid to say what’s on her mind—even if that means she makes a mistake from time to time. She’s also not afraid to own said mistakes and apologize when she thinks it’s necessary, which she just did after a recent tweet didn’t go over so well with some of her fans.

Here’s what went down. Teigen tweeted what she meant to be a joke about her mom, writing, “My mom treats her air pods like they’re disposable. buys a few a month. she says they would be easier to not lose if they had….a cord.”

Some fans were upset at what they perceived as a comment that flaunted Teigen’s wealth and privilege. “Me, reading this after spending the night googling selling plasma. Why so many people follow these out of touch rich people is beyond me. And let’s not even get into the environmental implications of this,” one person commented. “Cool. I can’t afford to see the heart specialist my primary told me I need to see,” another tweeted. Another said simply, “Your family needs higher taxes.”

Teigen, unlike some celebrities, did not go on the defensive and instead addressed the feedback in a series of tweets. “Oh man I haven’t checked my mentions for a bit and I didn’t realize how many people were super pissed off about this. It was meant as a joke (and exaggeration) about how my mom doesn’t realize air pods are with a cord are headphones but it came across as super tone deaf and icky,” she wrote.

“I promise I will not always say the right thing in the right way but I also promise I hate disappointing or pissing you guys off,” she continued. “I’m sorry and I will do better to not be such an asshole.”

She even responded directly to some fans.-

Chrissy Teigen’s mentions are now filled with people either thanking Teigen for addressing the issue and those who thought it was funny in the first place. I guess that’s what amounts to a successful day on Twitter in 2019.

Kim Kardashian Is Not Here for This Troll's Shady Tweet About Khloé and Tristan

Khloé Kardashian made her first appearance since the Tristan Thompson–Jordyn Woods cheating drama Wednesday night, February 20, in Los Angeles at a party for the style brand PrettyLittleThing. And unfortunately, many people are spending hours analyzing Kardashian’s face in pictures from the event. One outlet even went as far as to say she “failed to raise a smile” the entire evening. Ugh.

A second outlet had a similar opinion—only this time it caught Kim Kardashian West‘s attention. “If someone cheats on you publicly. Y’all going outside the next day?” reads the tweet, which Kardashian West wasted no time responding to.

“Would you prefer she lose the ? too?” she tweeted. “A single mom has to work too boo! This was a professional commitment planned far in advance and you better believe she is not waiting on anyone to pay her bills or provide for her daughter. PERDIODT!!!”

See Kardashian West’s response for yourself, below. This is the first time any of Khloé’s sisters has spoken out—at least tangentially—about what happened.

We have a full recap of the Khloé-Tristan-Jordyn saga, but for those who just want a quick summary: News broke Tuesday that Khloé Kardashian and Thompson were breaking up amid rumors he cheated on her with Kylie Jenner’s best friend, Jordyn Woods. Everything out there about the situation is speculative at this point—though Kardashian did post a few telling quotes to her Instagram Story. “The worst pain is gettin hurt by a person you explained your pain to,” reads one of them.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Kim Kardashian West is the first relative to address this drama. She was quite vocal the first time Thompson cheated on Khloé in April 2018—just days before Khloé gave birth. “Like, I don’t even know how to describe it besides it’s just so fucked up,” she told Ellen DeGeneres at the time.

Bette Midler Sparks Controversy with Vulgar Melania Trump Tweet

Bette Midler has never held back from sharing political topics on her social media accounts, but a recent tweet about First Lady Melania Trump has the iconic performer taking more heat than usual.

The tweet in question, posted on November 14, includes an old photo of FLOTUS from her modeling days—specifically a shoot for British GQ back in 2000, according to People. In it, Mrs. Trump is wearing what looks to be a clear plastic bikini adorned with metal accouterments in the cockpit of an airplane. Midler’s caption reads, “The dry cleaning bill for the upholstery on Air Force One must be insane. #FLOTITS”

To say that many on Twitter were outraged might be a mild understatement. “You know what? Love you, hate what she stands for but NO. Attack her values or lack thereof 100 percent,” one user wrote. “But shaming over showing her body for money when I stand against misogyny makes me uncomfortable no matter the politics of the target.” Another said, “What a crass and inelegant remark. Perhaps upbringing is harder to overcome than previously thought. Money hasn’t bought you class, Betty.”

Others referenced cyber-bullying and the First Lady’s efforts to combat it with her Be Best campaign.

It wasn’t all haters, though—some Midler supporters found the post funny. “Relax people! Bette’s a comedian with every right to make a joke about that ghastly outfit. I wish #JoanRivers were still around to chime in,” a Twitter user wrote. “Now it’s the right wing who is being overly PC…THIS is bullying? Hypocrites.”

“You’re getting a lot of flack for this tweet from fans,” said another. “Not from this fan, I thought it was hysterical. Melania offers nothing for young women to inspire them.

Neither Midler nor Trump’s office has made any further comment.

Did Ariana Grande Just Tweet New Lyrics or Another Shady Thing About Pete Davidson?

Ariana Grande set the Internet ablaze last night, November 1, after she posted a series of tweets seemingly about her split from Pete Davidson. “For somebody who claims to hate relevancy u sure love clinging to it huh,” she wrote in a since-deleted message. (This appears to be a response to the joke Davidson made in a new Saturday Night Live promo in which he proposes to musical guest Maggie Rogers.) The Sweetener singer also tweeted the phrase “thank u next,” which, at first, reads like a kiss-off to Davidson but might actually be the title of a new song.

The evidence? A new string of tweets Grande posted on Friday, November 2. “got so much love….. got so much patience….. i’ve learnt from the pain …. and turnt out amazin…. say i’ve loved and i’ve lost….. but that’s not what i see cause look what i got…. look what u taught me,” she wrote in one post before following up with “cause look what i found …. ain’t no need for searching and for that i say…. thank u, next” and then simply “and for that i say ……. thank u, next.”

Not only do these words read like song lyrics, Genius already has a page dedicated to a new track by Grande called “Thank U, Next.” Pair this with the fact Grande’s fans are flooding her mentions with pleas to “release the damn song,”, and it appears a new era of music might be upon us.

See the fan reactions for yourself, below:

Given last night’s events, though, it’s not far-fetched to think these posts could also be directed at Davidson. Fans also responded to Grande’s mysterious tweets with messages of encouragement. “u are gettin stronger ari, we ♡ u so much more than u’ve eva kno. we will always be here no matter what, i love this n its betta u r motivated by this, ♡ u,” one person wrote.

My guess? These tweets are song lyrics that were no doubt partially inspired by Grande’s relationship with Davidson. Of course, we won’t know anything for sure until Grande says something—but if “Thank U, Next” is a song, let’s hope it’s a bop.

Meghan Markle Just Posted Her First Royal Tweet

Meghan Markle can now add “social media photographer” to her list of royal duties: On Saturday, the Kensington Palace Twitter account shared an image of Prince Harry rehearsing a speech and gave the photo credit to the Duchess of Sussex herself—showing the world that she’s been hiding some artsy camera skills.

“Getting ready for tonight’s @InvictusSydney closing ceremony, where we will celebrate the #InvictusGames competitors, and their friends and families. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will both speak at the ceremony this evening. #IG2018,” the tweet said, including a black-and-white photo of Prince Harry wielding a microphone. The last line was “? The Duchess of Sussex,” indicating Markle was the proud wife behind the photo.

The image appears to have been taken just before she and Prince Harry both gave remarks at Saturday’s Invictus Games closing ceremony in Sydney. The event marked the 11th day of the couple’s first royal tour together, which has included stops in Australia, Fiji, and Tonga so far.

It’s pretty uncommon for members of the royal family to supply content for official social media accounts, since they’re not allowed to have their own forms of social media. In the past, Kate Middleton has occasionally taken on the role of family photographer for her and Prince William’s brood, providing Kensington Palace with some adorable images of the royal children. Now, it seems she has a kindred picture-taking spirit in Markle. The Duchess of Sussex actually used to take plenty of her own shots when she had personal Instagram and Twitter accounts as an actress, but she had to delete both when she became a royal.

Prince Harry and Markle have a few more days left on the tour, so we’ll have to see if any more of the Duchess’s personal photos make it onto social media. While the couple is usually completely surrounded by photographers, it’s always sweet to get a glimpse of personal moments from their perspective.
