Melania Trump Shows Off Progress on a New White House Tennis Pavilion

It seems whenever Melania Trump walks outside, she manages to ignite conversation—and criticism. Her latest project won’t be changing that trend.

On March 5, the First Lady tweeted, “I am excited to share the progress of the Tennis Pavillion at @WhiteHouse. Thank you to the talented team for their hard work and dedication.” The tweet also included photos of Trump in a hard hat, going over plans at the construction site.

According to CNN, “The tennis pavilion will be located on the South Lawn of the White House, near the Children’s Garden, which was constructed in 1968 at the behest of first lady Lady Bird Johnson, and the Kitchen Garden, the 2,800 square foot garden planted by first lady Michelle Obama in 2009.”

The project was first announced last October when FLOTUS said, “It is my hope that this private space will function as a place to gather and spend leisure time for First Families.”

But the photo op—staged while America combats a global and growing health crisis as coronavirus takes hold—feels a little out of step with the fear and nerves that are spreading in tandem with the virus. Never mind the destruction in Tennessee due to the tornadoes that hit Nashville earlier this week. People on social media were quick to call this out.

“It is not the fact that tennis courts are being built at WH that is at issue (by all means, build them), it is the ignorance surrounding the optics of voluntarily promoting these private benefits during the ongoing public health & financial crisis,” one person tweeted. The First Lady also drew comparisons to Marie Antoinette.

This is certainly not the first time Melania Trump has been accused of striking a tone-deaf note. Who can forget her infamous “I Really Don’t Care, Do U?” jacket while visiting a shelter housing children separated from their families at the U.S. border. “It’s a jacket. There was no hidden message,” said Stephanie Grisham, the First Lady’s then spokesperson.

People Think Princess Anne Snubbed Donald and Melania Trump in This New Video

If you’re not an obsessive royals follower (like myself) but recently watched the latest season of The Crown, you may be a newfound fan of Princess Anne, the queen’s only daughter. Frankly, I would have loved an entire season just about Anne—we didn’t even get to see that she once foiled a plot to kidnap her!

Generally speaking, Anne is not the royal who makes the most headlines, quietly going about her royal duties without much scandal. But a new video from last night’s NATO reception hosted by Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace has the internet all abuzz. In it, Donald and Melania Trump are greeted in a receiving line by the queen, Prince Charles, and Duchess Camilla as Anne stands to the side. The queen appears to gesture to her daughter—perhaps asking her to join them—and Anne simply shrugs and laughs.

There’s no sound in the video, so we can’t be sure of what exactly is going on between the royals and don’t know definitively if Anne was even meant to be one of the initial greeters at all.

Watch for yourself below:

Of course, the internet had a lot of thoughts about this viral moment, wondering if Anne was in trouble with her mom or if she purposefully removed herself from the receiving line. “The Queen chastising Princess Anne for not greeting Trump and Anne not giving a single shit is the mood we all need to take into today,” one person tweeted.

That wasn’t even the only viral moment involving Anne at the reception. A video of Justin Trudeau chatting with France’s Emmanuel Macron, Britain’s Boris Johnson, and Princess Anne appears to show the Canadian prime minister talking about President Trump (though he is not mentioned by name) and his lateness thanks to an unprompted press conference.

Affection for Anne grew even deeper on Twitter. “People are surprised that Princess Anne can hang? That woman once was the victim of an attempted kidnapping and when she was told to get out of her car at gunpoint she said, ‘Not bloody likely.’ A true bad bitch,” one person wrote.

So do you think this will all be explained in a future season of The Crown? We hope so.

Melania Trump’s Former Aide Stephanie Grisham Will Be the White House Press Secretary

The White House has set records with its rate of staff turnover, and Sarah Huckabee Sanders left another spot open when she announced on June 13 that she would leave her post as press secretary this summer. Her seat won’t be empty for long.

This week her replacement was announced. On Tuesday, Melania Trump shared that someone from her own team—Stephanie Grisham, her deputy chief of staff and communications director—would replace Sanders and handle press issues for the president and his administration.

In a rare move, Trump followed her husband’s example and announced the news on Twitter. “I am pleased to announce @StephGrisham45 will be the next @PressSec & Comms Director! She has been with us since 2015 – @potus & I can think of no better person to serve the Administration & our country. Excited to have Stephanie working for both sides of the @WhiteHouse. #BeBest,” she wrote.

President Trump also discussed the news with reporters and called Grisham a “fantastic” choice for the role. “Stephanie has been with me from the beginning,” he said. “A lot of people wanted the job; a lot of people wanted to do it. I’ve asked people, ‘Who do you like?’ and so many people said Stephanie. She’s here, she knows everyone, she actually gets along with the media very well.”

Grisham is one of the rare officials who have been with the Trumps since the 2016 campaign, and she’s had multiple roles within the administration. She previously worked as a deputy to former press secretary Sean Spicer, who resigned in 2017. She’ll be Trump’s sixth press secretary in three years.

During her tenure on the First Lady’s team, Grisham emerged as an outspoken and controversial force who often responded to criticism directly on Twitter, much like her new boss. She took issue with the media focusing on Melania Trump’s “I Really Don’t Care, Do U?” jacket, and defended Trump amid criticism that her antibullying campaign was at odds with her husband’s inappropriate and misogynistic rhetoric.

“I think that, honestly, one thing really doesn’t have anything to do with the other, and she is focused on helping children,” Grisham said at the time. “She has said many times that her husband is an adult, he’s the president of the United States, he knows what he’s doing, and she’s focused on Be Best, she’s focused on children. Children are the ones who are impressionable right now, and so she’s going to go out there and do the best that she can to help them succeed.”

Of Course Melania Trump’s White House Birthday Card Is Becoming a Meme

It’s Melania Trump‘s birthday, and the White House decided to celebrate by posting a photo of her on social media. “Happy Birthday, @FLOTUS,” the White House wrote on its official Instagram and Twitter pages.

But of course the Internet couldn’t let well enough alone. People on Twitter immediately started turning the photo WH chose into memes. After all, the pic was an interesting choice. It’s of Trump sitting on the far end of a couch, alone, as dozens of paparazzi take her picture. There wasn’t a cute headshot the White House could have posted? A candid? Just this couch photo?

Check it for yourself below. I’m not surprised the memes are rolling in.

Here are just a few (very funny) examples.

This isn’t the first time Melania Trump has been at the center of a White House meme. Remember over the holidays, when people were freaking out over the red Christmas trees the Trumps picked as decorations? Those memes still slay me, TBH.

According to People, Donald Trump said last year he didn’t get a big birthday present for Melania because he was too busy.

“Well, I better not get into that because I may get in trouble,” the President said on Fox & Friends, per People. “Maybe I didn’t get her so much. I tell you what, she has done—I got her a beautiful card. You know, I’m very busy to be running out looking for presents, OK! But I got her a beautiful card and some beautiful flowers.” He did, however, give Melania a shout-out in an email campaign. “Melania is my rock and foundation, and I wouldn’t be the man I am today without her by my side,” he wrote at the time last year.

This is Melania Trump’s third birthday in the White House as FLOTUS.

Melania Trump's Stylist Wants You to Stop Reading Into Her Outfits

A First Lady’s wardrobe is often the subject of public scrutiny. That’s certainly been true of Melania Trump‘s fashion choices: Despite her insistence that the media and the President’s detractors assign meaning to her outfits where there is none, many of her looks have been criticized for their exorbitant price point and apparent mixed messaging. And with a white-out planned by Democratic lawmakers for the 2019 State of the Union, some wondered what the First Lady would wear to the event.

Trump and stylist Hervé Pierre landed on a black trench dress by Burberry for the President’s address to the nation. And in an interview with WWD, Pierre was quick to clarify that the public shouldn’t read into the choice of designer—or anything else she wears while residing in the White House.

Alex Wong

“As long as I find the right outfit, the designer is almost irrelevant,” the stylist told WWD. “The designer, well, is Burberry, but it could have been anybody else. It has nothing to do with England or Brexit. If I would have to think of all these things when I look at dresses and outfits, I would lose my mind.

“Afterward, social media will go on about Brexit or whatever,” Pierre continued. “They have to do their own version of this. On my side, believe me, I don’t think of it. Because I don’t have time to do that.”

In the case of Trump’s State of the Union look, Pierre explained that the Burberry trench dress was a practical choice: “It’s very sharp and straight to the point. There is no room for fluff or something cute. I think she is a daring woman, but it has to be right. It is not a costume.” The stylist bought the dress for the First Lady in New York City, according to WWD. The Melton Wool Tailored Coat, from Riccardo Tisci’s debut collection from the brand, retails for $2,390.

Last year Trump wore a white Christian Dior pantsuit and Dolce & Gabbana blouse to the State of the Union. Some interpreted it as a reference to Hillary Clinton’s white inauguration pantsuit and the suffragette movement. Onlookers also noted that Dior is currently led by Maria Grazia Chiuri, a designer who has identified herself and her work as feminist.

According to Pierre, though, these interpretations simply aren’t something he thinks about when he’s dressing the First Lady. Her outfits may ignite conversation, but they’re apparently not intended to communicate any larger message.

Melania Trump Wore a Sequined (Old) Céline Gown to the Annual Congressional Ball

A few weeks after unveiling her much talked-about White House holiday decorations, First Lady Melania Trump celebrated the spirit of the season at the 2018 Congressional Ball in a seriously festive gown.

FLOTUS appeared alongside President Donald Trump at the White House on Saturday evening (December 15) in a formfitting, long-sleeved dress made entirely out of white sequins. (‘Tis the season, after all.) Take a look.

The style was from Céline’s Spring 2018 collection—the last one designed by Phoebe Philo, before Hedi Slimane took over and removed the accent from the first “e.” It appeared on the runway during Paris Fashion Week last fall.

FLOTUS has worn many looks straight off the runway during her time in the White House. The long-sleeve white gown is a reflection of Philo’s ten-year tenure at Céline: Formal and polished, but streamlined and unfussy.

Philo’s legacy lives on in fan accounts such as @oldceline—and, apparently, in FLOTUS’ closet. (Trump previously wore a Céline shirtdress in October, to arrive in Ghana, during her four-country tour of Africa this fall.)

According to the Daily Mail, the First Lady made a short set of remarks to start the Congressional Ball. “Welcome to the White House. Enjoy the evening. Merry Christmas and happy and healthy new year,” she said.

Trump’s stylist, Hervé Pierre, has yet to provide a comment about the decision to dress FLOTUS in Céline for the Congressional Ball. In the past, he has said that Trump’s fashion choices are part of building her legacy as First Lady: “What interests me in this relationship is not just finding pretty clothes—a lot of people can do that,” he said to the New York Times. “It’s more about the legacy of this woman. Everybody has a different reaction to what she’s wearing.”
