Watch Donald Trump Literally Forget Melania Is Standing Right Next to Him

There have been some deeply awkward moments between President Donald Trump and his wife Melania, and one of the most absurd examples might have slipped past you. At a visit to Fort Myers, Florida last week to survey the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, Trump sent his regards on behalf of his absent wife—while she was standing right next to him.

“I just want to thank everybody, the first responders, on behalf of myself, our Vice President—Melania really wanted to be with us,” Trump said, somehow forgetting that the Slovenian former model was standing directly to his left in a green shirt and white baseball cap. What?

While the First Lady remained stone-faced this time, there have been plenty of others during which she’s acted like she wished her husband would quite literally forget her presence. How many times did we watch the video of Melania appearing to swat Donald’s hand away as they walked down the tarmac after arriving in Tel Aviv? And who didn’t raise an eyebrow when the Trumps exchanged a stiff handshake after she introduced him at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland last week? We all felt the love in the room when Melania pulled herself away from President Trump as they danced to “My Way” at an Inaugural Ball. Add last week’s baffling lapse in basic spatial awareness to the “Sad Melania” meme inspiration.

Melania Trump Condemns Bullying in U.N. Speech, Twitter Explodes at the Hypocrisy

In a speech at a United Nations luncheon on Wednesday, First Lady Melania Trump called on the international community to help her end cyberbullying. Ironic, when you consider one of her husband’s pastimes is retweeting GIFs of himself hitting a woman—Hillary Clinton to be exact—with a golf ball.

“It remains our generation’s moral imperative to take responsibility for what our children learn,” Trump said in her speech. “We must turn our focus right now to the message and content they are exposed to on a daily basis—social media, the bullying.”

In her speech Trump said that we need to teach children right and wrong with “our own example.” She added, “We must remember that they are watching and listening…. As adults, we are not merely responsible. We are accountable.”

Before Trump’s speech even ended, social media users, including former presidential candidate Jill Stein, couldn’t help but point out the apparent deep division of ideas between Melania and her husband, President Donald Trump.

As The Washington Post listed, beyond his golf ball tweet, Trump has also called Clinton “crooked Hillary,” referred to Senator Marco Rubio as “little Marco,” and recently called North Korean leader Kim Jong-un “Rocket Man” in front of the entire United Nations.

Even Clinton herself finds the First Lady’s cause of choice both a little off—and largely ignored.

“I think it’s a really important issue, and if she were serious and able to follow through on it, I bet there would be so many people who would be willing to try and help her out on that,” Clinton told Mic in a recent roundtable discussion.

When asked by reporters how Trump can present her cyberbullying platform with a straight face alongside her husband’s vicious tweets, Stephanie Grisham, her communications director, said that Trump “will not avoid doing what she knows is right, because others think it is a bad idea.”

She added, “This is not about politics. This is about using her role as First Lady to help as many children as she possibly can.”

It Was Only a Matter of Time Before Melania Trump Got FLOTUS Merch


Hot off the heels (sorry) of a controversial travel get-up, Melania Trump landed in Houston this afternoon—and though she ditched the Manolo Blahnik stilettos on Air Force 1, FLOTUS was spotted wearing another item that had the Internet scratching its head.

The Trumps are in Texas to visit those affected by Hurricane Harvey—though, so far, the purpose for their trip has been eclipsed by the First Lady’s wardrobing choices for the photo opportunities. As The Cut pointed out, the First Lady deplaned in Houston wearing an accessory that might signal she’s finally succumbed to her husband’s affinity for merchandise: a hat that spells out “FLOTUS,” in case there were any questions surrounding her current title.

Though Melania skipped the signature “Make American Great Again” red, her black-and-white “FLOTUS” cap is right in line with her husband’s headgear. (President Trump has recently been spotted wearing a new “USA” style himself.) And while a FLOTUS-branded hat isn’t quite as questionable as stilettos to visit a city recovering from a Category 3 hurricane, we’re nonetheless curious as to why Melania decided now was the time to partake in the Trump family merch tradition.

Luckily, all it took was a quick scroll through Twitter to realize that we weren’t alone in this line of thought.

FLOTUS’ office has released a statement about the inordinate amount of attention Melania’s wardrobing choices have received during this official visit. But this outfit change does beg more questions—such as: Will these hats be popping up on Donald J. Trump’s official online store in the near future? Will other members of the administration also be getting the merch treatment? Only time will tell… but this might be an example of how being #onbrand can go a tad too far.

Melania Trump Gets Mocked For Wearing Stilettos to Houston After Hurricane Harvey


On Tuesday, Donald and Melania Trump took off for Texas to witness the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey and the relief efforts taking place firsthand. Photos of the President and First Lady show Melania looking unusually casual in a green bomber jacket, a black shirt and black cropped pants, but instead of grabbing a pair of sneakers or, you know, rain boots, Melania choose to cap off her look with sky-high black stilettos.

Obviously, Twitter users couldn’t resist commenting on the choice of footwear, with some taking it as evidence that the First Lady cares more about her image than helping the victims of the hurricane. Others pointed out that they’re just plain ridiculous to wear during what the National Weather Service called “unprecedented” flooding.

A Trump spokesperson told The Washington Examiner in Melania’s defense that she planned to change into a different pair of shoes. Still, people are confused about why she was wearing her signature heels in the first place.

This isn’t the first time Melania’s come under fire for her fashion choices. In May, she wore a 51,500 Dolce & Gabbana jacket to the G7 Summit in Sicily, garnering criticism for flaunting her wealth while many Americans struggle to survive on far less money every year—especially as her husband’s administration furthers policies that would make life harder for these people.

Melania Trump Thanks Chelsea Clinton for Defending 11-Year-Old Barron


As her husband riled up supporters during an unrestrained rally in Phoenix, Arizona on Tuesday night, First Lady Melania Trump offered a personal and heartfelt thank you to former First Daughter Chelsea Clinton for standing up for her son, Barron, after the 11-year-old was criticized for his clothing choices.

“Thank you @ChelseaClinton—so important to support all of our children in being themselves!” Trump wrote on Twitter.

Earlier this week, the conservative site The Daily Caller published a critique of the T-shirt and shorts Barron Trump wore on Sunday as the First Family returned to Washington from the President’s golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. Taking issue with how the 11-year-old was dressed, the article said it was time that Barron began “dressing the part” of a president’s son.

“While the president and first lady traveled in their Sunday best, young Barron looked like he was hopping on Air Force One for a trip to the movie theater,” wrote Daily Caller entertainment reporter Ford Springer.

Chelsea, who faced her own share of criticism during her childhood in the White House, soon sprung to Barron’s defense.

“It’s high time the media and everyone leave Barron Trump alone and let him have the private childhood he deserves,” Clinton wrote in a Tweet Monday night.

And when various Twitter users were all-too-ready to criticize the 11-year-old, Chelsea was there ready to fire back:

This, of course, isn’t the first time that Chelsea’s stood up for the President’s youngest son. When Barron was criticized on social media during the inauguration in January, Chelsea slammed those who ridiculed the young boy (while also offering a subtle dig at his father’s administration): “Barron Trump deserves the chance every child does-to be a kid,” she tweeted. “Standing up for every kid also means opposing POTUS policies that hurt kids.”
