Adriana Lima on Motherhood, Self-Care, and Wearing Makeup to the Gym


Wearing makeup to the gym is divisive. While some consider it the one public safe haven where you should feel free to not GAF about how you look, others—like model Adriana Lima—will tell you it’s a boost of confidence to catch a glimpse of their cat eye in the mirror while doing biceps curls. “I’m someone who’s obsessed with the gym, and I also love makeup,” says Lima, who’s the face for the new Maybelline x Puma collaboration, a collection clearly meant for those who fall into latter thought camp on workout makeup. “To be able to have makeup that I can apply when I’m on the go, when I can just drop my kids at school and go straight to the gym and not worry about the makeup lasting, is a dream.”

That’s exactly the goal of the five-piece collection (which includes gym-approved highlighter, eyeshadow sticks, lipstick, blush-highlighter duo sticks, and mascara), and why Lima makes such a perfect fit as the face of the collab. A quick scroll though her Instagram reveals the woman is an athlete in the truest sense. Besides pictures of her daughters and red-carpet snaps, her feed is full of shots of her boxing, strength training, and breaking a sweat. Ahead, we catch up with the model to chat sweat-proof makeup, skin care, and the rest of our Big Beauty Questions.

Glamour: What’s your makeup look of choice usually when you head to the gym?

Adriana Lima: Mascara, lipstick, and blush. That makes me feel strong.

What does strong mean to you?

AL: To me, strong is just feeling confident on your feet and not being afraid to be adventurous or try new things.

What’s the best workout advice you’ve ever gotten?

AL: You just have to keep moving. And I know there are days when you’re not in the mood—I have so many days that I’m not in the mood to get up and hit the gym, but I just force myself to it. Sometimes you might be late to class or you might only have 15 minutes. That’s OK—getting there is the most important thing. Fifteen minutes is better than nothing.

What’s one beauty rule you swear by?

AL: I have a few rules: Use sunblock. I’m in Miami, so I use lip balm. Wash your face. And use oils! People tend to be scared of them, but a good one won’t break you out.

You’re trapped on a desert island. What three products do you bring with you?

AL: Oh my God. Sunblock. Lip balm. And can I say water? Water!

What are your go-to skin care products?

AL: I love coconut oil, any kind of scrub to wash off my face, and a simple skin mist.

What’s your standard workout music?

AL: For getting ready, I like to listen to “I Remember” by Deadmau5. But at the gym I can go from “Taki Taki” with Cardi B to rock ’n’ roll like Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song,” Metallica’s “Enter Sandman,” and the Rolling Stones.

If you could change one thing about beauty perceptions in Hollywood or on social media, what would it be?

AL: That not everyone has to be a size zero, not everyone has to have clear skin, and not everyone has to wear the fashionable color of the season.

What’s your favorite way to take a moment for yourself?

AL: Lying down in bed and watching a good TV show. My favorites right now are Vikings and The Last Kingdom.

Oscars 2019: The Hair and Makeup Looks Everyone Will Be Talking About


Just like that, awards season is coming to a close, and the 2019 Oscars is sure to send it out with a bang. While it’s arguably the biggest awards show of the season, this year there’s more buzz surrounding the event than ever, given it’s the first time in 30 years the show will have no host, there’s no clear frontrunner for best picture, and Gaga may or may not get one step closer to an EGOT.

One thing we do know for sure is we can count on the Oscars to deliver some jaw-dropping beauty looks. While it’s been a strong awards season beauty-wise, from Cardi B’s incredible updo at the Grammys to Sandra Oh’s waves at the Golden Globes, the Oscars are always a league of their own. While the other ceremonies tend to lean more experimental, the Oscars are the epitome of true Hollywood glamour.

5 Women Try Glossier's Milky Oil Makeup Remover


Would She Buy It? Having tried it, I would definitely buy it. Most makeup removers need some vigorous scrubbing to take off all of my lipstick. This one was gentle.

First Impression: I’m not really a cleansing oil kind of girl, so I’m not going to lie, this made me nervous.

Her Thoughts: With a name like “Milky Oil” I was expecting Glossier’s makeup remover to leave my face feeling greasy and oily, but I was pleasantly surprised with how satisfyingly smooth my skin felt after use. My makeup came off smoothly and easily, too. I’m definitely impressed. The only thing is that it made my skin a little red at first, but it cleared up after a few seconds.

Would you buy it? I wouldn’t have bought it before trying it, but now I would definitely buy it and would recommend it to friends.

First Impression: It’s so incredibly cute I couldn’t wait to bring it home and display it in my medicine cabinet. However, I don’t know if I trust Glossier to make a makeup remover powerful enough to cut through anything more than a whisper of eyeshadow.

My Thoughts: I’m throughly impressed by this. It totally removed my Tom Ford liquid liner in one clean swoop, with no bleeding or black residue left behind. It didn’t leave a greasy film, or irritate my eyes, as many makeup removers tend to. When it came to my waterproof mascara I still needed another cleanse to 100 percent remove it, but Milky Oil did the bulk of the work.

Would I Buy It? I usually stick with drugstore makeup remover, but for $12 I would definitely upgrade for something so cute and so effective.

First Impression: I was skeptical initially. I only ever use a makeup wipe to remove my makeup and never use liquid makeup remover because I find them messy. It always feels like I have to scrub my makeup off with a liquid, as opposed to wiping it off quickly with a facial wipe. I’m a sucker for packaging though and really wanted to try Glossier’s Milky Oil because it looked so cute.

Her Thoughts: This product felt really nice on my skin whereas makeup remover solution usually really stings or feels uncomfortable for me. I also didn’t have to apply that much to remove my makeup, which is often the case. Most of the time I have a pretty hard time removing my red lipstick but it came off faster than usual with Milky Oil.

Would She Buy It? I would absolutely buy it and unlike my favorite CVS makeup remover wipes, I’d happily leave this on my bathroom counter as decor.

First Impression: At this point, Glossier could make an $18 bottle of water and I’d buy it. Why is everything so irresistibly cute?

Her Thoughts: I’m an evangelist for double cleansing (that is, first cleansing with an oil-based cleanser to remove makeup, then following that up with mild cleanser). Ever since I started doing it, I’ve noticed less breakouts. I think Milky Oil is good first step for spot removal—especially for eye makeup. It’s gentle on my sensitive eyes (a must for contact wearers) and doesn’t leave a greasy cast behind like some makeup removers. Truth be told, I can’t tell too much of a difference between it and my favorite micellar water, but that bottle certainly doesn’t look as cool.

The Secret to Alicia Keys' No-Makeup Makeup at the 2019 Grammys


When Alicia Keys announced two years ago she was swearing off makeup, we cheered her on. Someone was finally pushing back at the absurd expectation that women in Hollywood need to spend hours in hair and makeup before leaving the house. We were also jealous. Not only does she have the voice of a goddess (and the ability to play two freaking pianos at once), she’s got skin like one too.

But Keys is human, and it soon came out (thanks to some intrepid reporting by W) that—like all that rehearsal time she spends in the studio—she puts the same amount of energy into her skin care routine. According to her makeup artist, Dotti, that regimen goes to the tune of $455.

So last night, when a little birdie alerted us to the fact Keys actually was wearing makeup to host the 2019 Grammys, we rang up Dotti immediately to find out how to do your makeup so convincing that it tricks hundreds of journalists to report you’re not wearing any.

Unsurprisingly, it’s all about skin care prep. “We do quite a bit prep before we even get to makeup—we moisturizer, jade roller, and massage,” Dotti tells Glamour. “Prepping for the most important thing. You can put any makeup on top, but it’s about the quality of the skin you put it on that’ll really make it look great.” To get to that place, she says Keys does a lot of the things you can’t get at a bathroom sink, like lasers and facials (sorry), but she does a few solid tricks for making the most of your skin care products. It’s all about layering. “I start with a light serum and moisturizer, just to keep the skin quality lush but not weighed down, and for each one, I roll it in with the jade roller, then do another layer,” she says.

The same trick goes for making foundation look virtually undetectable—yes, even drugstore formulas. “I like to break down foundation by mixing it with face oil until it literally becomes translucent,” says Dotti, who used Burt’s Bees Full Coverage Liquid Makeup in Walnut and Deep Maple mixed with the brand’s Complete Nourishment Facial Oil on Keys last night.

Then, just the way she layers skin care, she does the same with base makeup. She first presses foundation in with a big buffing brush (Rae Morris brushes are her favorite) or Beautyblender, then she rolls it with a jade roller. Next comes another layer of makeup, followed again by jade rolling. “It helps makeup sink into your skin for a more natural glow,” she says. “I think makeup looks best after an hour or two after it’s settled onto your face—this does that instantly. You’ll get makeup on your roller, sure, but that’s fine. It actually helps remove any excess.” As for type of roller she recommends? Dotti got hers 10 years ago and doesn’t remember the brand, but she says investing in real jade (like one from Ling Skincare) is worth it.

And because we’re sure your group chat probably read something like ours, you’re right: Nobody’s chest looks that radiant naturally. Dottie used a self-tanning mitt to rub on Sol de Janeiro Copacabana Bronze Glow Oil (which is basically a shimmery body lotion) in all the places that naturally catch light. “I always use a mitten to put on body makeup,” she says. “It’s easy, there’s no finger marks, and it goes on super even.”

Grammys 2019: Hair and Makeup Looks You Can't Miss


At this point in the game, we’re deep in awards season—and that means we’ve had plenty of hair and makeup looks to ooh and ah over. Take, for example, the blue eyeshadow at the Golden Globes or affordable beauty moments at the SAGs.

But tonight’s Grammy Awards brought a little something extra to the table. Movie stars always look glam, of course, but women in music tend to have fun with their looks. And where better to show that off than the Grammys? How could we forget Gaga’s iconic egg entrance or Alicia Keys’ makeup free statement? (Which, by the way, she did again tonight.) We can only expect more iconic looks that will have people talking for years to come.
