Meghan Markle Left Her Solo Fiji Outing Early Due to Security Risks


Meghan Markle managed to remain cool, calm, and collected in what might’ve otherwise escalated to a scary situation.

As reported by People, Markle was on a solo outing during her royal tour stop in Suva, Fiji on Wednesday afternoon. (Prince Harry was off exploring a nearby forest.) While visiting a market to meet with a group of local vendors to discuss the United Nations Women’s project “Markets for Change,” her security detail soon deemed the environment too unsafe for her presence and escorted her out after just six minutes. She was originally set to stay for about 20 minutes.

Her exit reportedly stemmed from crowd management issues, Kensington Palace confirmed to the Associated Press, as the market filled up with more people than the detail was prepared to handle. “It was hot, humid and uncomfortably busy and there were far larger crowds than expected,” an aide explained to The Daily Mail. “Meghan met everyone she was meant to meet and left. There would have been a lot of people who would have been keen to meet her but she did met those who had hoped to. On advice she was taken out due to crowd management issue.”

Prior to Markle exploring the markets, she spent the morning giving her first solo speech on the royal tour at the University of the South Pacific, where she praised Fiji’s commitment to higher education and reminisced about her own college days at Northwestern University. “As a university graduate, I know the personal feeling of pride and excitement that comes with attending university,” she told the crowd. “From the moment you receive your acceptance letter to the exams you spend countless late nights studying for, the lifelong friendships you make with your fellow alumni to the moment that you receive your diploma, the journey of higher education is an incredible, impactful and pivotal one. It was through scholarships, financial aid programs and work-study where my earnings from a job on campus went directly towards my tuition—that I was able to attend university. And, without question, it was worth every effort.”

While Markle and Prince Harry’s royal tour still has a few more days ahead of itself, if you don’t see as much of Markle, don’t be too surprised. The duchess has apparently cut down on some of her appearances for the remainder of the tour, owing to her pregnancy. Everyone needs some self-care, even the royals.

Amy Poehler's ‘Making It’ Overalls Are the Only Pure Thing Left in the World


There’s a good chance that, like me, you’ve spent the last couple weeks (months? years?) searching high and low for soothing content as a respite from an alarming news cycle. Cat videos, frenzied online shopping sprees, meditation apps…all well and good, but in my eyes, nothing beats Amy Poehler’s overalls on Making It as pure medicine for my tired soul.

Hosted by Poehler and Nick Offerman, the NBC show is, by far, the feel-good show of the year. It’s a crafting competition full of adorable pun-offs, sweet bits, and the kind of gentle encouragement most of us can only dream of ever receiving in a work environment—think The Great British Baking Show but with woodworking instead of Victoria sponge cakes. It’s an absolute delight. In every episode Poehler appears in a pair of sturdy overalls, her version of a host uniform. And at this point, spotting her signature outfit is as comforting to me as catching a whiff of my favorite calming candle. As soon as I lay eyes on those strapping dungarees, I know that I’ve made it to the good place.

These overalls are a quiet constant in an increasingly inconsistent and discordant world—and every week Poehler delivers. They bring peace and harmony to my aching psyche and deserve to be celebrated as such. Having spent the majority of the mid-eighties and early nineties frolicking in overalls of the OshKosh B’Gosh variety, seeing Poehler in her own grown-up version of the ultimate play clothes tugs at my heartstrings in a way I never anticipated. These aren’t high-end silk “fashion” rompers we’re talking about; they’re utilitarian, comfy, and simple, just like the overalls my sister and I lived in during our blissed-out, sweet childhood.

Poehler’s overalls set the down-to-earth tone that underlies the entire series. Her casual, easy-going attire helps the contestants feel at ease and lets their handicrafts shine. As the host of a TV show on a major network—and a legitimate celebrity—Poehler easily could have made every episode a dramatic fashion moment designed to make her look her glamorous best. But nope! She went the overalls route, and whether they’re maroon, blue denim, olive green, or black, they’re always practical, comfortable, and low-key (and almost always are paired with an equally chill button-down).

Much like exercising, listening to true-crime podcasts, and petting my dog, Poehler’s overalls are the balm for which my soul has been yearning. (And if you’re not caught up, wait until you see her formal overalls from the season finale.) Have you ever heard of anything so pure and good? And as if that weren’t enough, they’re also the best fall outfit inspiration for the cozy weeks and months ahead. While her overalls are of the hearty, utilitarian variety, there’s a whole host of styles available these days, for any type of shopper.

Planned Parenthood Action Fund, Swing Left, and Organizing For Action Partner on Women's Health Day of Action


If you’re anything like me, the totality of the Brett Kavanaugh nomination and all that has come with it has wreaked havoc on your brain, your soul, and your spirit. I’m furious. I’m sad. I’m somehow both emotionally spent and energized at the same time. And I’ve given myself whiplash vacillating between hopeful and utterly distraught about America’s future—especially for women.

On Friday, the GOP-led Senate plowed ahead, as Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) promised, with a final vote presumed to happen on Saturday. And at the conclusion of her speech on the Senate floor this afternoon, Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) announced that she would vote to confirm the nominee. She delivered what felt like an endless defense of Kavanaugh that seemed to prove she had never been quite on the fence about him after all.

Democrat Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) released a statement soon after Collins’ speech that he is also a “yes” on Kavanaugh. As it stands now, someone who’s been accused of sexual assault by a woman whom President Trump himself deemed a “credible” witness will be confirmed to sit on the United States Supreme Court for the rest of his life.

Far be it from me to tell you how you should process this entire mess. (I’ve wept, screamed aloud in my apartment, self-soothed with sugar, and tried to write my way through it.) But I’ve also learned that when I can channel my rage, passion, and, yes, pain into something more tangible, I feel a hell of a lot better. So, a proposal: join me?

This weekend, three of my favorite progressive organizations—Planned Parenthood Action Fund (PPFA), Swing Left, and Organizing for Action—have banded together to create a Women’s Health Day of Action. And it’s tomorrow, October 6—as in Saturday, the day that Kavanaugh might just win his nomination battle.

Their goal is simple: to help elect pro-women’s health candidates and regain a progressive majority in the House of Representatives. To that end, they have identified 16 House districts in seven states to support on October 6. Hundreds of volunteers will be working with the campaigns directly to knock on tens of thousands of doors to get out the vote in November. (In some districts, the candidates themselves will be participating.)

It’s time to activate our anger (again), ladies—and I’m all the way in.

“Everything is on the line in 2018. Women are fed up with politicians dismissing survivors of sexual assault, undermining access to Planned Parenthood health centers, and reshaping the Supreme Court to gut the constitutional right to safe, legal abortion,” says PPAF President Dawn Laguens. “Women are poised to serve a reckoning this November that is decades in the making, and this partnership is a signal that we’re all right there with them. We know that, together, our voices are too powerful to ignore.”

Literally—they are. One in five people have participated in protests since 2016, according to a Washington Post/Kaiser Family Foundation survey. And the number one issue that’s gotten them on their feet? The rights of women.

“The level of engagement and enthusiasm OFA has seen this cycle, among seasoned organizers and brand new volunteers alike, has been overwhelming – and women have been leading the charge,” says Katie Hogan, Executive Director of Organizing for Action. “It’s a phenomenon we’ve seen dating all the way back to the Women’s March, and that passion has only intensified as it’s become increasingly clear how much is at stake in November. We’re thrilled to be working in lock-step with both new leaders in the progressive space, like Swing Left, and long-time powerhouses of activism, like Planned Parenthood Action Fund, to elect representatives who will echo these voices in Washington.”

And if you don’t happen to live near one of those districts, don’t despair. Getting involved wherever you are couldn’t be easier. Contact the field office of a local candidate you support and volunteer to canvass or phone bank. Reach out to friends and relatives who aren’t routine voters to make sure they are registered (many state deadlines are fast approaching). Ask them to pledge to show up at the polls on November 6 at a site like Vote Save America.

“If we want to protect women’s health from the constant Republican attacks, it’s not enough to just vote this year. We need each and every person to knock on doors and make calls so that we can break out of our silos and bring about electoral change,” says Swing Left Political Director Katie Hogan.

Taylor Swift Sent a Fan a Note on Her Wedding Day That Left Her in 'Freaking Shock'


Taylor Swift‘s 2000s song “Love Story” has become an anthem of sorts for newly-married couple Brittany Lewis and Alexas (Lexi) Gonzalez. They first heard the song in high school, and it’s played an important role in their own relationship ever since. Lexi is the super-fan of the two, so, naturally, she was left in “freaking shock”—her words, not ours—when she received a present from Swift herself on her wedding day. Yup.

The “End Game” singer sent Brittany and Lexi a bouquet of beautiful white flowers and a note that read, “You have no idea how honored I am that ‘Love Story’ has been such a big bart of your beautiful love story. I’m absolutely thrilled that Lexi said YES! Have the most magical wedding day and hopefully I can meet you both soon! Love, Taylor.”

Lexi shared the note and flowers to Twitter, writing, “Still In freaking shock that @taylorswift13 sent me and my amazing Hubby flowers on our wedding day! ????? #LoveStory #SinceHighSchool #WeddingOfTheYear.” See the present for yourself, below:

So, how did Brittany and Lexi get on Swift’s radar? It turns out Brittany—knowing how much of a fan Lexi is—sent Swift several messages online asking her to do something sweet for their wedding. And she certainly delivered.

This isn’t the first time Swift’s sent fans flowers, either. In May, Swift gifted a fan some gorgeous flowers and a handwritten note on her graduation day. Though not “fans,” per se, Swift also sent flowers to Cardi B (after “Bodak Yellow” hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100), backup dancers from the “Look What You Made Me Do” video, and the LAPD all in the last year. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. What can we say? Swift really loves her floral arrangements.

Emma Stone Canceled Plans on Jennifer Lawrence and Left Her With Half a Face of Makeup


Make some room in your heart, because Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence’s friendship is going to need the space. Last week brought us the pair’s delightful joint interview with W, where they discussed memories like their pet turtles and a shared stalker (believe it or not, much funnier than it sounds). The only downside is that it took until now for the two to get on screen together, especially when you see the dynamic we’ve been missing out on. But on the upside, they just gave fans an inside look at the their Golden Globes night. As expected, it’s gold.

According to a video Lawrence posted on Facebook, the two were supposed to meet up after the ceremony to go to some after parties together. As celebrities do, Lawrence called in a glam squad to prep her look for the night—so when Stone texted that she’d rather just hang out at home instead, as good friends do, Lawrence rolled with the change of plans.

That meant stopping everything and sending her squad home for the night, and that meant the Internet got an fantastic video of Lawrence wearing exactly one-half of a full-on look.

“What happened tonight?” Stone asks Lawrence, who’s shown in profile. “Well. You had told me you wanted me to be your date to the after parties, so I got us tickets to some after parties, and booked a car, and was halfway through glam when you told me told me that you didn’t want to go,” Lawrence slowly says, turning towards the camera. “That you just wanted to come over to my house, so I sent my hair and makeup team home. And now this is what I look like.” She stares at the camera with one pitch-black smoky eye. The woman knows drama, and that is some impeccable comedic timing.

Meghan Markle's Ex-Husband Is Making a TV Show About Being Left for a Prince


In perhaps the pettiest move in the history of petty moves, Deadline reports Meghan Markle’s ex-husband, Snowfall producer Trevor Engelson, is making a scripted comedy series about a man whose wife leaves him for a prince. Yup.

It’s important to note this TV show is, indeed, a work of fiction, and Engelson and Markle divorced in 2013—long before she and Prince Harry started dating. Plus, an element of this new series is how the ex-husband shares custody of his kids with the Royal Family, and Markle and Engleson don’t have children.

That said, Deadline reports the idea originated from a conversation Engleson had with another producer, Dan Farah, about what it’d be like if he and Markle did have kids, and he had to share custody with the British Royal Family. Interesting.

Here’s the premise of the series, directly quoted from Deadline‘s story: “Divorce is hard. Sharing custody is harder. Sharing custody with the British Royal family when your wife marries a prince, in the unforgiving spotlight of London’s tabloid media, is next level.”

Markle reportedly has no involvement in the show, further driving home the point that it’s completely fiction. Engleson and Farah are producing alongside Jake Kasdan, one of the masterminds behind New Girl. So, in other words, expect some serious laughs.

There’s no launch date set for the series, but it’s expected to air on Fox. We recommend everyone who’s obsessed with the Royal Family keep a close eye on it, though.

Markle’s relationship with Prince Harry has been meticulously documented over the last few months. We’re a couple,” she told Vanity Fair. “We’re in love. I’m sure there will be a time when we will have to come forward and present ourselves and have stories to tell, but I hope what people will understand is that this is our time. This is for us. It’s part of what makes it so special, that it’s just ours. But we’re happy. Personally, I love a great love story.”
