Bombshell Review: The Fox News Drama Gives a Revealing Look at the Toxic Sexism of Roger Ailes

With Kelly as narrator, Bombshell breaks the fourth wall with asides to the audience (of a colleague who lasciviously compliments her dress as she walks through the Fox newsroom, Kelly says he’s not a creep, he’s just “ambitious”). That, along with the brusque, overly-explanatory style—a signature of writer Charles Randolph—falls flat. The device works in Randolph’s explanation of the 2008 financial crisis, The Big Short, because of the complexity of the financial system, but here, the asides are unnecessary and distracting.

Margot Robbie’s terrific Kayla, an “evangelical millennial” and aspiring anchor, is the most heartrending part of the film. While her character isn’t strictly true, she’s an amalgam of all the women Ailes subjected to his lechery, the ones who, unlike Carlson or Kelly, didn’t have enough star power or leverage to share publicly what had happened to them. One of the most crushing scenes in Bombshell is when Kayla breaks down telling her co-worker—the fantastic Kate McKinnon, who plays a (fictional) closeted lesbian producer—she “gave in” to Ailes.

More than anything, that’s what Bombshell gets right: the agonizing position workplace harassment puts women in. Carlson, in the movie and in reality, eventually settles the suit for $20 million, with the caveat that she’s forbidden from discussing what happened. (The real-life Carlson is now campaigning to end the use of nondisclosure agreements and forced arbitration that prevent women from speaking up.)

Near the end of the movie, Kayla ticks off the list of never-ending questions for women who’ve been harassed. What did I do to bring this on? Will I always be seen as a victim? If I come forward, will this define me? As in real life, the film leaves them unanswered.

Taylor Swift Says She's Re-Recording All Her Old Music in Light of the Scooter Braun Drama

In late June, news broke that Justin Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, had acquired Taylor Swift’s back catalog of music as part of his purchase of Scott Borchetta’s Big Machine Label Group. (Big Machine was Swift’s old label.) Pretty much everyone, from Halsey to Todrick Hall to Justin Bieber, had something to say about the situation, and voices on social media (including Kelly Clarkson) even urged her to consider the biggest power move possible: re-recording her entire catalogue.

And it turns out that’s exactly what Swift has decided to do. A short transcript from her recent appearance on CBS Sunday Morning reveals that the pop star is planning to head back to the studio and create brand new masters of all the songs that Braun now owns. Here’s exactly what she said when correspondent Tracy Smith asked her if she was going to re-record everything.

“Might you do that?” Smith asks.

“Oh yeah,” Swift says.

“That’s a plan?” Smith asks.

“Yeah, absolutely,” Swift answers.

As a recap, the whole drama started when Big Machine Records—the Scott Borchetta-owned label that Swift was on for a bulk of her career—was acquired by Braun’s company, Ithaca Holdings. In a Tumblr post, Swift insisted that she didn’t know about the sale until it was announced and that she wasn’t given the chance to buy her music. She also expressed her frustration that the songs she’d worked so hard on were now owned by someone she says had subjected her to “incessant, manipulative bullying.”

“When I left my masters in Scott’s hands, I made peace with the fact that eventually he would sell them. Never in my worst nightmares did I imagine the buyer would be Scooter,” she wrote. “Any time Scott Borchetta has heard the words ‘Scooter Braun’ escape my lips, it was when I was either crying or trying not to. He knew what he was doing; they both did. Controlling a woman who didn’t want to be associated with them. In perpetuity. That means forever.”

It’s unclear when Taylor Swift is going to start this project, but it’s going to be a huge undertaking. It comes right as her seventh studio album, Lover, is scheduled to drop on August 23. The full CBS interview will be out on August 25.

The Earrings Kate Middleton Wore to Archie's Christening Are Causing So Much Drama

Kate Middleton‘s ears are reportedly at the center of some very petty drama right now. Yes, you read that correctly: her ears.

The situation goes back a few days—to baby Archie’s christening on Saturday, July 6. It was a stunning celebration, and nearly all of the Royal Family was in attendance: Archie’s parents, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry (obviously); Markle’s mother, Doria Ragland; Prince Charles and Duchess Camilla; and Kate Middleton and Prince William, to name a few. From the official portraits, everyone appeared to be in good spirits. But of course, the internet can’t just have that.

See, some people are still stuck on the idea that there’s a royal “feud” brewing between Prince William, Middleton, Markle, and Prince Harry. And they used baby Archie’s christening to reignite it. First, fans accused Prince William and Middleton of looking “sour” and “pained” in the official portraits. (If the couple seems tired or annoyed at all, it’s probably because they had to stand around taking stuffy photos all day. That’s a frustrating task for even the closest family members.)

Now, people are saying the earrings Middleton wore to the christening were somehow a dig at Markle. She picked the same pair Princess Diana wore to Prince Harry’s christening in 1984, which was interpreted as a tribute to the late royal. However, some are saying that Middleton deliberately chose them to “upstage” Markle. What?

Every Celebrity Connected to the Taylor Swift-Scooter Braun Drama

Hailey Baldwin. Justin Bieber’s wife. Commented “gentleman” on his post defending Braun, which irked Swift’s friend, Cara Delevingne. More on that later.

Yael Cohen Braun. Scooter’s wife. Posted a lengthy message to her Instagram defending her husband’s name and accusing Swift of collecting and dropping friends like “wilted flowers.” Kendall Jenner, Courteney Cox, Tori Kelly, Kacey Musgraves, and Olivia Munn all reportedly “liked” Yael’s message at one point. (Some have since retracted.)

Allison Jamie Kaye. A partner at Ithaca Holdings. Re-posted Yael’s message to Instagram and applauded her for speaking out. “I can categorically say that @scooterbraun is not only a good man who supports all women – particularly [Taylor Swift], who he has defended and advocated for behind close doors more times than I can say,” she wrote.

Demi Lovato. Braun’s client; also came to his defense on Instagram. “I have dealt with bad people in the industry and Scooter is not one of them. He’s a good man,” she wrote. Lovato also hit back at claims Todrick Hall made that Braun is homophobic. “I can guarantee you Scooter isn’t,” she said. “As a member of the LGBTQ+ community myself, he wouldn’t have signed me if he was.” Hall responded to Lovato via a series of tweets, but more on that when we get to Team Taylor.

Ty Dolla $Sign. Another client of Braun’s; wrote him a congratulatory message on Instagram that seemed to hint at the Swift drama.

Scott Borchetta. Defended Big Machine’s decision to partner with Braun; claims Swift knew about the acquisition before it went public.

Erik Logan. Big Machine board member; defended Borchetta and said of Swift, “You’re the real bully. Your power is fading.”

Halsey. One of the first celebs to come forward in support of Swift. “She deserves to own the painstaking labor of her heart,” she posted to Twitter.

Katy Perry. Reportedly signed a petition urging Swift to re-release her first six albums on Republic so she could retain ownership. “I stand with Taylor. Stay strong, my friend,” she wrote alongside her signature, per this screenshot captured by a fan. (These two confirmed they’re no longer feuding after Perry appeared in Swift’s “You Need to Calm Down” video.)

Cara Delevingne. Longtime friend of Swift’s; jumped to her defense after Hailey Baldwin called her husband, Justin Bieber, a “gentleman” for defending Braun. “Gentleman? @haileybieber @justinbieber you must be bored,” she wrote under Bieber’s post. “I wish you spent less time sticking up for men and more time trying to understand women and respecting their valid reactions.”

Todrick Hall. Also a friend of Swift’s; posted several tweets asserting his loyalty to her. “I truly hope justice is served and that my friend’s music will fall into the hands of a better human,” he wrote. He also said he believes Braun is “homophobic.”

Demi Lovato hit back against that accusation on Braun’s behalf, which incited a rift between her and Hall. “Stop using your one client who identifies as queer to stand up for you,” he wrote. “There’s no way Demi saw my tweet, that means someone from your team is reaching out to them, using them to defend you. Fight your own battles.”

Cher. Took to Twitter to announce she’s standing with Swift. “Unfortunately can relate,” she wrote.

Other celebrities who have voiced their support for Swift. Alessia Cara, HRVY, Iggy Azalea, Jack Antonoff, Sky Ferreira, Allie X, Diana Silvers, Heidi Montag, HAIM, Martha Hunt, Joseph Kahn, Mamrie Hart, Mandy Teefey, Daya, Iris Apatow, Iza, Sara Sampaio, and Gretchen Peters.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Allegedly Stole Their New Instagram Handle, and I’m Living for the Drama

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are many things: philanthropists, activists, roast-chicken eaters. But they’re also, according to a new report from the BBC, a couple of thieves. Yup, you read that correctly. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are apparently out here stealing Instagram handles from civilians.

What am I talking about, you ask? Well, let me take you back to earlier this week, when the couple launched their own Instagram account, @sussexroyal. It’s been active for only three days, and yet it’s amassed nearly 4 million followers. That’s a lot of people wanting to see photos of Markle smiling and waving.

But Page Six reports a @sussexroyal account already existed. A driving instructor from the English county of West Sussex, Kevin Keiley, claims that was the name of his IG for three years. No, this isn’t a Kensington Palace family member you don’t know about: Keiley had that handle because of where he lives and his favorite soccer team, Reading FC, which is nicknamed the Royals.

“I got a jokey text from my son, which said, ‘Ha ha, I see your handle has gone then,’” Keiley told BBC’s Radio 1 Newsbeat. “I thought, What’s that all about? He said, ‘Look on Instagram,’ so I looked on Instagram and suddenly my handle wasn’t @sussexroyal anymore. It was @sussexroyal. It had been taken.”

Taken, he says. The queen needs to launch an investigation immediately. Call Liam Neeson! Call Kris Jenner! Ryan Murphy, I’ve found the next true-crime story you should adapt for Netflix.

Keiley says he was “annoyed” no one from the royal family or Instagram reached out about taking his handle. “I didn’t ask for this,” he says. “I’ve had the account for years. It’s not very pleasant.”

For what it’s worth, Instagram did cop to scooping up the name, citing a policy that permits them to make changes to inactive accounts. (Keiley didn’t post much to Instagram prior to this incident.)

Here’s my question: Are Markle and Prince Harry even aware they took this man’s Instagram handle? How did they find out? Given Markle’s preroyal affinity for social media—RIP, The Tig—she seems like the one who would step in with an explanation. She should call Keiley and be like, “We’re so sorry for taking your Instagram handle; here are 3,000 loaves of homemade banana bread as an apology.” This man lost something near and dear to him, after all. He needs answers, as do I.

The plus side to all of this? Keiley’s Twitter following has grown exponentially: from four to more than 200. We love an influencer on the rise.

Khloé Kardashian Broke Her Silence on the Tristan Thompson-Jordyn Woods Drama

Unless you’ve been sequestered somewhere without WiFi, you probably heard there’s a new scandal rocking the Kardashian-Jenner family. Earlier this week, news broke that Khloé Kardashian‘s boyfriend—and father of her daughter, True—Tristan Thompson allegedly cheated on her with Kylie Jenner’s best friend, Jordyn Woods. Kardashian and Thompson are reportedly no longer together as a result—”[She’s] completely done with [Thompson] for good,” a source tells Us Weekly.

Save for a highly-scrutinized Instagram comment, Kardashian has remained silent on the incident—until now. The Good American mogul recently posted a series of quotes to Instagram Stories about heartbreak and betrayal. There’s no direct mention of Thompson or Woods, but it’s not hard to guess who she’s likely referring to.

“The worst pain is gettin hurt by a person you explained your pain to,” Kardashian posted first, which eerily describes her current situation. After all, Woods has been close with the Kardashian-Jenners for years. “Jordyn has been like Kylie’s sister,” a source tells People. “They were inseparable, and always together.”

The second is a spin on the “everything happens for a reason” mantra: “Somebody needs to hear this…That betrayal was your blessing!!!!”

The third post seems like a pretty direct reference to Thompson, whose first cheating scandal occurred just days before Kardashian gave birth to baby True. It reads, “If they ask you about me, tell them: ‘She was the only person that loved me with honesty, and I broke her.'”

Khloé Kardashian followed these quotes with an illustration of a woman crying and a close-up of a beautiful bouquet of flowers:

The rest of the Kardashian-Jenner clan has remained silent so far, but Khloé’s sister Kim recently unfollowed both Woods and Thompson on Instagram. Woods has also reportedly moved out of Kylie Jenner’s home, where she was living. Read our complete breakdown of this saga here.
