Twitter Just Explained Why It Won't Ban Donald Trump


On Friday Twitter finally explained to the world why it refuses to ever ban President Donald Trump, or other world leaders.

In a blog post that comes just days after Trump went on a Twitter tirade that included comparing the size of his “nuclear button” to that of North Korean leader Kim Jung Un’s, the social media company explained that it can’t delete Trump due to its own terms of service. Furthermore, it stated, deleting his account would have little impact anyway.

“Twitter is here to serve and help advance the global, public conversation. Elected world leaders play a critical role in that conversation because of their outsize impact on our society,” Twitter said. “Blocking a world leader from Twitter or removing their controversial tweets, would hide important information people should be able to see and debate. It would also not silence that leader, but it would certainly hamper necessary discussion around their words and actions.”

From taking time out of his day to attack the free press, or to attack women, and even the aforementioned threats of nuclear war, Donald Trump has shared it all with his 46 million followers. And this sharing has lead many to say that he should be banned from ever using the service in the name of our own national security.

However, according to Twitter, banning the President, and people like him, will do little to stop the dangerous rhetoric from spreading.

The platform, which serves more than 500 million users around the globe, added that it is constantly reviewing tweets by leaders, along with reviewing everyone’s content, to ensure it can enforce its own rules accordingly and fairly.

“No one person’s account drives Twitter’s growth or influences these decisions,” it added. Instead, Twitter said it is working to remain as unbiased as possible with the public interest in mind.

“We are working to make Twitter the best place to see and freely discuss everything that matters,” the statement concluded. “We believe that’s the best way to help our society make progress.”

Although this generic press statement may not be how every Twitter employee feels. In November Trump’s Twitter account was offline for 11 brief and glorious minutes after a customer service employee deactivated it on their last day with the company. While Twitter users appeared to love the 11 minutes of Trump freedom they received, Trump himself took the entire thing as a compliment, tweeting later that night, “My Twitter account was taken down for 11 minutes by a rogue employee. I guess the word must finally be getting out and having an impact.”

Alyssa Milano Takes on Sexual Harassment and Donald Trump in Powerful New Essay


In a detailed essay for Rolling Stone, Alyssa Milano said she’s dealt with gender inequality and harassment throughout her acting career and urged the public to hold Donald Trump accountable for his lewd comments about women.

The essay, published today, outlined why Milano is supporting Time’s Up, a Hollywood initiative designed to fight sexual harassment and assault. Milano became an integral part of the #MeToo movement when she encouraged women to share their experiences with sexual misconduct on Twitter, boosting a hashtag created by civil rights activist Tarana Burke. While she’s championed other women’s stories, Milano hasn’t revealed too much about her personal experiences with harassment in the entertainment industry.

“I have not told my #MeToo stories, but I will say I dealt with one assault case in the industry and one not in the industry. And I don’t know a week that has gone by in my 35-year career that I haven’t dealt with harassment and gender inequality in some capacity,” she writes.

She listed legislation, lobbying and education about gender inequality as ways through which the Time’s Up initiative can keep the #MeToo momentum going. Already, 30 Hollywood women, including Reese Witherspoon and Eva Longoria, have backed Time’s Up. Milano also encouraged men to become part of the solution—and called out Donald Trump for bragging about grabbing women by the pussy and trying to rollback women’s rights in his first year as president.

“We must hold Trump accountable. If we’re asking senators to resign because of sexual misconduct, what message does it send that we are allowing a man who has had 19 women come forward and accuse him of misconduct, to be our president?” she writes. “This is behavior that I think has stolen generations of women from reaching their potential, and that to me is truly heartbreaking.”

Milano described how supporting the #MeToo movement has impacted her. She explained that she didn’t just want represent voices in her own industry, but those of every woman that has been a victim of such “such a sadly common phenomenon.”

“Every fiber of who I am on a cellular level has been changed since I sent that tweet. It would be impossible not to be affected or impacted by the stories that people have shared with me,” she writes.

Donald Trump Hasn't Apologized for His Treatment of Women, so This Reporter Did It for Him


Since The New York Times first published their investigation into Harvey Weinstein’s alleged pattern of sexual harassment and misconduct, dozens of men in politics, media, and entertainment have been exposed for their countless misdeeds. With each new story comes the standard apology from a man in power—they ask for the public’s forgiveness and express various levels of regret for their reported behavior.

But throughout this entire reckoning, one man has been unflinchingly unapologetic: President Donald Trump.

As it stands now, at least 19 women have come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against Trump. Not only has he made no effort to apologize for these allegations, he, in turn, has branded his accusers as liars. And in an instance when he did express remorse—see: post–Access Hollywood tape and post–”grab them by the pussy”—he then tried to rewrite the narrative among his colleagues and claim that the leaked tape was a fake. It’s maddening under normal circumstances but even more unbelievable when you consider that he’s the President.

To help us assuage all our frustrations, Vox’s Liz Plank took it upon herself to create a can’t-miss mash-up that features Trump doing what women everywhere have hoped he’d do for months: apologizing for his behavior. Trump may never say actually say “sorry,” but this is the next best thing.

Donald Trump Jr. Is Trying to Start a Twitter Feud With Jennifer Lawrence


Taking after his father, it seems like there’s little Donald Trump Jr. enjoys more than stirring up some controversy on Twitter. And now he’s coming for one of America’s sweethearts: Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence.

To put this latest spat in context, let’s first take a look at Lawrence’s recent cover story for The Hollywood Reporter. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, Lawrence delved into her “political passion turned obsession,” revealing that she’s even planned out a hypothetical meeting between herself and Donald Trump, should she ever find herself face to face with the President.

“I’ve got a pretty good speech,” Lawrence said. “And it ends with a martini to the face.”

Don Jr., however, didn’t take kindly to this Real Housewives-esque scenario. Quickly jumping to his father’s defense, the eldest Trump son promptly tweeted about the interview, telling the world he was “pretty sure that’s not how it would end… “

Naturally, fellow tweeters had plenty of thoughts on Trump’s response—with many once again reminding Don Jr. of his father’s disturbing history of sexual harassment allegations.

Maybe one day the Trump family will learn to think before they tweet.

The Supreme Court Just Ruled that Donald Trump's Travel Ban Can Go Into Effect—for Now


As the third and latest iteration of President Donald Trump’s travel ban remains tied up in lower courts, the Supreme Court ruled on Monday that the order can go into effect even amid the continuing legal battles.

Trump issued this most recent order in September, barring certain travelers from Iran, North Korea, Libya, Syria, Venezuela, Somalia, Chad, and Yemen from entering the U.S. Six of these eight nations are Muslim-majority countries, and per The New York Times, Solicitor General Noel J. Francisco has argued that the ban falls under the President’s “broad constitutional and statutory powers to control immigration.” Though the specifics of the restrictions vary among the eight nations, in most circumstances, citizens will be prohibited from studying, working, vacationing, or permanently relocating to the U.S.

Already, two federal appellate courts in Maryland and Hawaii have blocked major portions of the ban, particularly as they affect travelers who have “a credible claim of a bona fide relationship with a person or entity in the United States”—like a grandparent, aunt, uncle, brother- or sister-in-law, cousin, nephew, niece, or grandchild. In June, Trump’s second travel ban was allowed to go into effect after the Supreme Court reached a compromise and allowed individuals who fell into the “bona fide” category to travel to the U.S. (That version of the ban was only temporary and expired earlier this year.)

But by issuing that third order, Trump attempted to circumvent the standards set in place by the previous ruling. And now, the administration is once again challenging the lower court rulings and brought their latest case to the Supreme Court in an effort to see the newest ban implemented while the appeals process continues.

Two Supreme Court Justices—Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor—opposed the White House’s request and did not want to allow the ban to go into effect. As the administration prepares to once again appeal their case, the Supreme Court called on these lower courts to promptly decide on the case so a final ruling could be issued before the Court’s current term ends next June.

This Cyclist Flawlessly Gave Donald Trump's Motorcade the Finger


In the midst of President Donald Trump‘s former campaign manager Paul Manafort turning himself in and former adviser George Papadopolous pleading guilty to lying to the FBI, Trump … went out to play some golf. Naturally, the president went to the Trump National Golf Club just outside of DC to play a few rounds, and on his way back to The District, his motorcade passed by a cyclist who, in all likelihood, is not a Trump supporter.

Luckily, a photographer was on site to capture the moment, and we’re 99% sure Wonder Woman 2 should use the image as its movie poster. Take a look below:

A female cyclist raised her middle finger to Doland Trump’s motorcade while quietly continuing on her bike ride, mastering the art of a silent protest. This woman is an icon. Unfortunately she hasn’t been identified just yet, nor has she come forward, but Twitter is having a field day praising her triumphant bird flip.

David Smith from The Guardian was on site to see the bird flipping unfold, and also noted that a pedestrian gave the motorcade a thumbs down sign after it passed by her. Smith reported, “It overtook a female cyclist, wearing a white top and cycling helmet, who responded by giving the middle finger. The motorcade had to slow and the cyclist caught up, still offering the finger, before turning off in a different direction.” A modern day hero. We have to wonder if the president was looking out the window at the time and caught this woman flipping him off, but it’s more likely he was busy Tweeting.
