What It’s Like to Date While Wearing a Hijab

The hijab is a loaded piece of cloth. Sumeya, 20, can’t remember the first time she wore one—as it has for many other Muslim women, it seems it’s always been a part of her routine, symbolizing her devotion to her religion. “My understanding of the hijab definitely changed as I got older,” she says, “but it’s something that I’ve grown accustomed to, and I try to wear it as often as I can.”

For Westerners the hijab is much more controversial, and it’s often viewed as a symbol of Muslim women’s sexual repression. But for the women who choose to wear it, the truth is far more complex.

A Complicated Relationship

The word hijab literally translates as “cover” in Arabic, but it means more than just a headscarf. More broadly, hijab refers to a set of codes that regulate modesty—prohibiting sex before marriage, encouraging conservative dress—for those who practice Islam.

It’s no secret that the garment has been saddled with a slew of stereotypes about the people who wear it; hijabi women are often seen as brainwashed, repressed, or worse, and they are are seldom portrayed as people who simply want to express their faith. The inaccuracies are frustrating and can make things complicated—especially when it comes to dating.

“Wearing the hijab can make dating harder because people will make assumptions about your sexual experience, what sort of relationship you’re looking for, and even what type of person you are,” says Edil, 19. “I think people do see me differently when I wear it, but not in a completely negative way.”

In the most traditional forms of Islam, women are forbidden from having any sort of sexual relations until they are married. Many Muslim women don’t follow these strict guidelines, but the precedent still shapes the way many, even in the West, feel about sex and relationships. “I was raised in a conservative Muslim family—my siblings and I were always taught not to have sex before marriage. I believe that very strongly,” says Miriam, 27. “I’ve obviously been tempted, but even if I’m attracted to a guy, it’s just not going to happen.”

That doesn’t mean she hasn’t dated. “I was actually engaged to a man who had issues with the way I wore the hijab and was very controlling, so I ended it,” Miriam says. “Women’s bodies are always controlled by men. But the man I am seeing right now is very accepting of my hijab, and things are going very well.”

This is one of the biggest misconceptions about the hijab and women who wear it: While many, like Miriam, do choose to abstain from sex, it doesn’t mean they aren’t exploring their sexuality. Or dating. Or falling in love.

“The hijab forces a more serious take on relationships and a preservation of intimacy,” says Suha, 36. “You kind of weed out the nonsense. It deters men whose intention is to play around. It also allows a deeper connection to develop between potential mates without the ramifications of physical sex.”

But the negative stereotypes about the hijab and sex aren’t completely unfounded—just as there are many Muslim women who feel the hijab helps them explore romance and sexuality, there are many who feel it puts them in a box.

Amani, 19, knew from a young age that she was interested in women. She also knew that her queer identity was something she shouldn’t talk about in her conservative Muslim family. “I started wearing the hijab at a pretty young age, around middle school,” she says. “As I got older and realized I was queer, it became more of a religious performance and I felt like a fraud.” Amani decided to stop wearing the hijab in college. “For a long time I denied a large part of myself because I felt marked with a religious piety that I didn’t necessarily feel,” she says. “I felt rejected and pushed away from my own culture. Eventually I realized it was not sparking any type of joy in my life, which is why I no longer wear it.”

The Hijab, Hypersexualized

Ironically, the hijab—meant to protect Muslim women from the eyes of men, and the complications of sex—is often fetishized. “Hijab is supposed to be this entity that somehow desexualizes you, but I found that in a lot of ways it hypersexualizes me,” Amani says. “I have really vivid memories of weird creepy men trying to hit on me when I wore it and trying to get me to take it off. I think they see it as some sort of mission—they want to know what’s underneath.”

Nick Jonas Paid the Sweetest Tribute to Priyanka Chopra One Year After Their First Date

It’s hard to believe that Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas have only been dating for a year. (A year!) So much has happened: Flirty Instagram activity evolved into a summer (and fall) of headline-grabbing dates, which turned into a Tiffany engagement ring, which became a wedding at a palace in Jodhpur, India—and just a few wedding receptions. And that was all in 2018! This year, the couple’s been popping up on date nights with the other power couple in their Fab Four (Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas), killing it with their Met Gala red carpet return, and making their Cannes debut with plenty of outfit changes in tow. It’s safe to say they’ve had a pretty busy past 365 days.

Today, Jonas took a minute to write a super-sweet tribute on Instagram to Chopra to make the one-year anniversary since their first date (which, no, wasn’t the 2017 Met Gala—although that was the first time they were spotted together publicly). It features a picture of the two of them wearing one of their coordinated Cannes looks, with Jonas dipping Chopra romantically in front of a balcony.

“One year ago today I went to go see Beauty and the Beast at the Hollywood bowl with a group of friends. One of those friends was the woman that would become my best friend, my confidant, my muse, my beautiful wife. I am so grateful for our journey together so far. You make me smile every day and you inspire me to be the best version of myself. I am honored to be your husband. I love you. ❤️ @priyankachopra,” Jonas wrote.

An hour after he posted it, Chopra seems to have noticed his tag: “The most amazing thing that ever happened to me is you. I love you babs.. ?,” she replied.

Yep, it’s pretty adorable—but what about these two isn’t?

Men My Age Wouldn’t Date Me, so I Became a ‘Cougar’

When the 27-year-old French guy I recently matched with on Tinder says he wants to cook me dinner at his house for our first date, I’m not all that surprised. The French tend to be more romantic than Americans, even when it’s just about sex. But six hours before our date, he blows up my phone with food questions.

“You eat goat cheese, sweet Melanie?”

Yup!

How about salmon? Crepes for dessert? This or that for appetizers? What kind of wine?

“I’m sure I’ll love whatever you cook, don’t worry,” I say, partly touched, partly annoyed.

“But it’s the first time I see you. I want everything to be perfect!” he texts back.

I’m sure it will be, I assure him. I’m a 41-year-old woman with the sex drive of a teenage boy and we’d already established that we’re both just looking for a “sex friend,” as they call it here in France. All this effort on his part is nice but totally unnecessary.

When I arrive at his place, damn does it smell amazing. The table is so heavy with platters it looks straight out of a medieval feast. And even more food is cooking in the oven! “I made this sauce just for you,” he says, holding up a platter of breads, spreads, and fancy French cheeses. This special sauce—which, he informs me, is called “Melanie’s Special Sauce”—makes my knees buckle.

Over appetizers, he waxes poetic about what a strong American woman I am—I climb mountains, travel the world alone, I’m fearless. He launches into a monologue about how impressed he is with all I’ve done with my life so far and how he hopes I’ll find him even half as interesting. “I’m just so happy you’re willing to date someone as young as me,” he adds.

Of course I am. Who else is there, anyway?

I was so worried about turning 40, certain I’d suddenly become invisible to men—like Cinderella turning into a pumpkin in the middle of a party full of twenty-somethings. If my Tinder matches are any indication, that fear isn’t totally unfounded: Dudes my own age just aren’t interested anymore.

At first, I worried this meant I had in fact become an unfuckable dried-up old hag. Society has told women our entire lives that men won’t want us after 35. Hollywood casts age-inappropriate women for almost every leading man while at the same time casting women my age as the mothers of their peers. For women in America, turning 40 is a death of sorts. The loss of all our sexual capital. Nobody will want us or our bat wings. And bless your heart if you’re a woman in Los Angeles who refuses to get Botox and is edging toward 40.

I’ve come to realize, in my infinite old-woman wisdom, that this all bullshit. And if men in their forties no longer want to date me, well, that’s a good thing. Frustrated with my desolate Tinder inbox, I finally thought, Screw it, and set the age minimum on my dating app to 25. Whew, boy! Almost immediately my inbox caught on fire, filled with twenty- and thirty-something men just dying to take me on a date. Younger men not only want to date older women; they think we’re amazing.

I didn’t set out to be a “cougar,” but it seems like Tinder is chock-full of lonely cubs. I have never had this much sex—let alone good sex—in my life. These younger guys are more progressive, have less emotional baggage, and love dating a confident woman who knows what she wants and tells them what to do. I’ve never felt so sexy and attractive.

21 Rainy-Day Date Ideas That Aren't Another Movie

In addition to ruining your hair, rain has a habit of ruining outdoor spring and summer dates. Cute impromptu picnic? Forget it. That outdoor music festival? Probably not. When a sudden rainstorm interrupts your plans for a date, you have some choices: a) brave the weather and hope your hair doesn’t turn into Monica’s from the Barbados episode of Friends; b) choose an equally fun indoor activity, c) straight-up refuse to leave the house and stay in together, or d) be that person who asks for a last-minute raincheck (don’t be that person).

But if you find yourself needing a little inspiration for your backup plan, here’s a list of some classic rainy-day date ideas for when you’re sick of going to the movie theater as your only dry option.

If you want to avoid cabin fever, but you want to keep it as indoors as possible:

Bowling. A frizzy ponytail goes well with those shoes anyway.

Enjoy some art. This is the perfect opportunity to finally go to that museum’s new photography exhibit everyone is talking about so you can quit pretending you’re just as cultured as your hip friend who always manages to do that stuff before you even hear of it.

Get cultured. Find a random local performance that you probably didn’t even know was happening—a concert or a play or a comedy show—and snag the cheapest seats. You might discover a new favorite band, but even if it ends up being awful, at least it will be dry.

Act like kids. Think of the fun stuff your parents took you to do when you were driving them nuts inside the house. An arcade or even a roller skating rink (so retro!) is a much more fun indoor activity than sulking.

Couple shopping for wine together

Go shopping. We’re not talking about those awkward mall dates you had as a teenager. Go buy something you both can do together, like fun new game, or hit up an international grocery store for a new wine to try (Lebanon and Georgia—the country, that is—have some great ones).

Check out the local booze scene. Got a craft brewery, distillery, winery in your area? See if they have any available tours or tastings that day, or make a day of hopping between them (just have Uber be your DD).

Young happy women sitting on a pool table and talking to each other.

Play grown-up games. Pool halls are basically the arcades of the older set. Being inside a dingy, dark bar on a glorious spring day would be a waste, but it’s the perfect use of a cold and rainy one. If pool’s not your thing, find one that offers other activities like ping-pong or video games while you sip from that questionable glass.

Head to a café or wine bar. Enjoy a cappuccino or a glass of red wine at a café with a view out to a bustling street. It’s either gloomily romantic or cheerfully hilarious as you watch people outside get soaked.

If you’re willing to get wet:

Splash like children in puddles. Use those new rain boots you just went shopping for.

Maybe wear shoes, though.Getty Images

Walk in the park. Braving the rain (only if there’s no lightning, keep it safe!) will give you private access to a normally crowded public area.

Play photographer. Any fool with a phone can take a beautiful picture of a sunset on a clear evening (ugh, #nofilter braggers), but snap a waterproof case on and take some nature shots to for the ‘gram.

If you’re not leaving the house until all those disgusting earthworms have crawled back underground:

Take a trip down memory lane. Go through each other’s high school yearbooks and crack up at your mutually regrettable haircut decisions.

Watch the Trailer for Noah Centineo and Camila Mendes' Netflix Rom-Com The Perfect Date

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before alum Noah Centineo is already the Internet’s boyfriend, so his next role isn’t too much of a stretch given that it’s literally called The Perfect Date. In it, he plays a guy who gets paid to be a dream date for young women—so, yeah, the casting decision couldn’t have been better.

The trailer, which Netflix just released today, only adds to the appeal. It introduces us to Centineo as Brooks Rattigan, a high school senior who hopes to attend Yale but doesn’t have the money for the expensive tuition. “I’ve always wanted to date the most popular girl, drive the nicest car and go to the fanciest school. But I can’t afford any of that,” he says in the clip.

To get some extra cash, he ends up escorting Celia Lieberman (played by Laura Marano) to a school dance. It goes so well that it inspires a plan: create an app where people can pay him to be their plus-one at events. His job is to take on the role of whatever stand-in boyfriend they need for the occasion. In the trailer alone, he pretends to be a cowboy, an art connoisseur, and more.

Watch, below:

Because this is a romantic comedy, of course things eventually get knotty. Rattigan starts dating his crush Shelby Pace—played by Riverdale favorite Camila Mendes—and starts living out some rich kid fantasies that distance him from his friends. Naturally, there’s a tricky love triangle with Shelby and Celia to deal with too. (Fun fact: Marano and Centineo actually worked with each other on Austin & Ally back in the day.)

Centineo, of course, brings all the Peter Kavinsky charm that made him a breakout star in To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (and, hopefully one day soon, the To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before sequel).

The Perfect Date is out on April 12 on Netflix, so mark your calendars and prepare to swoon.

Rihanna and Her Billionaire Boyfriend Just Went on a Rare Public Date

Rihanna continued her birthday week festivities Thursday night (February 21) by going on a rare, public date with her rumored boyfriend, Saudi businessman Hassan Jameel. The two were photographed laughing and having a great time at a Los Angeles Lakers basketball game, both opting for casual ensembles. RiRi wore a Lakers jersey, while Jameel kept it comfortable with a black baseball cap and zip-up sweater. Neither of them stopped smiling throughout the entire evening.

Check out a few photos from their date, below.

They found love at a Lakers game (which I could never do—I hate sports).

But I’d probably enjoy a basketball game if Rihanna was with me. Hell, I’d enjoy a root canal if Rihanna was with me.

News of Rihanna and Jameel’s relationship first broke in June 2017, when they were spotted kissing while on vacation in Spain. They’ve made a few rare appearances since then. There was the time Rihanna literally hid Jameel under her umbrella (ella). They reportedly broke up in June 2018, but things seemed back on by December, when they were spotted having a cozy dinner in Malibu.

Rihanna will no-doubt continue her birthday festivities this weekend. She kicked things off Wednesday night (her actual birthday) by attending a party thrown for her at Wally’s restaurant in Beverly Hills.

And she certainly has a lot to celebrate. For one, her Fenty Beauty line is killing it. In January, she revealed the brand was dropping an inclusive line of concealers in 50 shades.

“I never could have anticipated the emotional connection that women are having with the products and the brand as a whole,” Rihanna told Time magazine about Fenty Beauty back in November 2017. “Some are finding their shade of foundation for the first time, getting emotional at the counter. That’s something I will never get over.” She added, “I’m going to continue to have fun and push the boundaries in this industry.”
