'The Knight Before Christmas' Review: There's a Reason This Holiday Rom-Com Is So Satisfying

Vanessa Hudgens won Christmas last year with her Netflix rom-com, The Princess Switch. The film was a viral sensation, filled to the brim with the feel-good, low-stakes hijinks we’ve come to expect from our holiday movies. A sequel to that now classic is coming in 2020, but while we wait, Hudgens has another holiday flick for us: The Knight Before Christmas. And I’m pleased to report it’s very, very good.

The plot of the movie is delightfully bonkers: A knight from 1334, Sir Cole (Josh Whitehouse), time travels to present day Ohio and meets a science teacher, Brooke (Vanessa Hudgens), after she accidentally hits him with her car. The doctors think Sir Cole has a head injury, which is why they aren’t fazed when he says he’s from medieval times. They think his memory will return in time and he’ll be back to “normal.” But days go by, and Sir Cole still contests he’s a knight. Brooke starts to wonder if he’s telling the truth, until—spoiler alert—she realizes he very much is, and they live happily ever after.

Much like Amy Adams’s character in Enchanted, the humor in The Knight Before Christmas stems from Sir Cole attempting to navigate the modern world. He pulls out a sword to fight Brooke’s ex-boyfriend, calls cars “steel steeds,” is enamored with televisions (a.k.a “magic boxes that make merry”), and thinks neckties are tiny torture devices. Brooke finds Sir Cole’s naiveté endearing, though, and romance blossoms. Not much about The Knight Before Christmas is realistic, but that’s the point. It’s pure, unabashed escapism in the best way possible.

“I think all rom-coms, on some level, are fairy tales, and I liked dropping the pretense and just owning it,” Monika Mitchell, the director of The Knight Before Christmas, tells Glamour.

Finding pure joy in 2019 is hard, after all, which is probably why rom-coms have become a booming business again. “I guess we all need to believe in magic a little bit more now than before,” Mitchell says. “These movies are entertainment, and that’s OK. They’re art, but they’re commercial art. They’re designed to be entertaining to the entire family so that a group of loved ones can sit together. Everyone has something in there that they can hold on to. Watching something that makes you happy is legitimate. To be happy at the end of something you invest an hour and a half of your life in is completely legitimate.”

Rom-Com Characters Always Have the Best Sweaters

The one thing all romantic comedies have in common? They celebrate the two things everyone wants in life—rom and com, of course. To honor that, we’re devoting a whole week to the genre. More on the rom-coms we love, past and present, here.

It’s officially autumn, which means I just want to lie in bed under all of my impulsively purchased Target throws, turn on all two of my oil diffusers, and watch romantic comedies while holding my girlfriend’s hand. The romance in these movies is all well and good, but this season—and every season, if I’m being honest—I’m especially obsessed with the sweaters in rom-coms.

I don’t know what it is about the genre, but there are so many cardigans. Why are there so many cardigans? It doesn’t matter if you’re as hot as Cher in Moonstruck or as charming as Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally, everyone’s got a sweater on. Scientifically speaking, it seems you simply cannot find your soulmate until you have found the perfect cardigan and chase your lover to the airport while wearing it.

And so, I’m sharing the very best sweaters I’ve seen in rom-coms—along with modern equivalents that you can shop now—just in time for cold-weather season. See them all, below.

People Can’t Stop Talking About Netflix’s New Rom-Com Falling Inn Love

Just before Labor Day Weekend, Netflix gave the world a little present in the form of a rom-com called Falling Inn Love. It stars Christina Milian (yes, of “Dip It Low” fame) as Gabriela, who, after losing her job and boyfriend, enters an online contest to win an inn located in New Zealand. She wins and uproots her life, only to find that her inn is completely run-down. So she enlists the help of a hunky contractor, Jake (Adam Demos), to restore the property to its former glory. Along the way they fall in love.

Twitter is absolutely buzzing over this movie and its many rom-com tropes. “#FallingInnLove is filled with every possible cliché, and I loved every second of it,” one person wrote. Another added, “I am watching Falling Inn Love, and it is like a 90s sitcom for 2019, complete with at least one actor who absolutely cannot act under any circumstances but is very nice to look at. I am having a lovely time.”

Check out some more reactions to the movie, below:

In an interview with Glamour, Milian shared her feelings on rom-coms, and basically zeroed in on everything that’s good about Falling Inn Love.

“I don’t know if there’s anything unlikable about rom-coms,” she said. “Keep showing the muscles on the guys. Give me more muscles. Give me more bickering. Give me more hot chocolate. I love it all. There’s nothing I wouldn’t take away from any romantic comedy.”

These reactions prove people are having fun watching Falling Inn Love, which is exactly what Milian wants. “I hope [people] like it enough they want to watch it over and over again,” she also told Glamour. “I love making movies that become family traditions or something people go back to. I hope Falling Inn Love is that type of film.”

Watch the Trailer for Noah Centineo and Camila Mendes' Netflix Rom-Com The Perfect Date

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before alum Noah Centineo is already the Internet’s boyfriend, so his next role isn’t too much of a stretch given that it’s literally called The Perfect Date. In it, he plays a guy who gets paid to be a dream date for young women—so, yeah, the casting decision couldn’t have been better.

The trailer, which Netflix just released today, only adds to the appeal. It introduces us to Centineo as Brooks Rattigan, a high school senior who hopes to attend Yale but doesn’t have the money for the expensive tuition. “I’ve always wanted to date the most popular girl, drive the nicest car and go to the fanciest school. But I can’t afford any of that,” he says in the clip.

To get some extra cash, he ends up escorting Celia Lieberman (played by Laura Marano) to a school dance. It goes so well that it inspires a plan: create an app where people can pay him to be their plus-one at events. His job is to take on the role of whatever stand-in boyfriend they need for the occasion. In the trailer alone, he pretends to be a cowboy, an art connoisseur, and more.

Watch, below:

Because this is a romantic comedy, of course things eventually get knotty. Rattigan starts dating his crush Shelby Pace—played by Riverdale favorite Camila Mendes—and starts living out some rich kid fantasies that distance him from his friends. Naturally, there’s a tricky love triangle with Shelby and Celia to deal with too. (Fun fact: Marano and Centineo actually worked with each other on Austin & Ally back in the day.)

Centineo, of course, brings all the Peter Kavinsky charm that made him a breakout star in To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (and, hopefully one day soon, the To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before sequel).

The Perfect Date is out on April 12 on Netflix, so mark your calendars and prepare to swoon.

Rebel Wilson, Your Rom-Com Comments Erased Plus-Size Women of Color

Rebel Wilson caught some heat this weekend after she incorrectly claimed to be the first plus-size woman to ever star in a romantic comedy.

It all started on Halloween when the trailer for her new movie Isn’t It Romantic dropped. The film, due out in February, centers around a woman who hits her head and suddenly wakes up in a rom-com, where she’s the object of handsome mens’ desires. The movie immediately received criticism for enforcing the problematic trope that plus-size women can only be attractive in alternate universes—something Amy Schumer’s comedy I Feel Pretty was knocked for in April. Wilson added fuel to the fire, though, when she declared on The Ellen Show, “I’m kind of proud to be the first-ever plus-size girl to be the star of the romantic comedy.”

The social media backlash was swift. With her comments, Wilson had seemingly overlooked actresses like Queen Latifah and Mo’Nique, who have both headlined rom-coms like Last Holiday (2006), Just Wright (2010), and Phat Girlz (2006).

One Twitter user pointed this out to Wilson, writing, “I love @RebelWilson as much as the next girl, but she isn’t the first plus sized woman to play the lead in a romantic comedy. Queen Latifah and Mo’Nique have both played romcom leads ?”

To this, Wilson replied, “Hey girl! Yeah I of course know of these movies but it was questionable as to whether: 1. Technically those actresses were plus size when filming those movies or 2. Technically those films are catorgorized/billed [sic] as a studio rom-com with a sole lead. So there’s a slight grey area.”

Mo’Nique herself even called out Wilson. “Hey my sweet sister,” she tweeted. “Let’s please not allow this business to erase our talent with giving grey areas and technicalities. Take a moment and know the history. DON’T BE A PART OF ERASING IT. I wish you the best.”

“Hi Monique, it was never my intention to erase anyone else’s achievements and I adore you and Queen Latifah so so much x I support all plus size ladies and everything positive we are doing together,” Wilson said in response.

Wilson then started to block the people on Twitter criticizing her Ellen comments, including many women and writers of color. It’s so prevalent that the hashtag #RebelWilsonBlockedMe is currently circulating Twitter.

This entire issue offers a glimpse into a larger, more sinister problem in Hollywood, the media and our country alike: the consistent dismissal of the accomplishments of women of color—especially plus-size women of color.

And it goes beyond just the movie industry. Black women have consistently been disregarded in the body positivity movement, too, despite the fact they were integral in building it. Before Ashley Graham and Tess Holliday led the pack, there were models like the late Mia Amber Davis, who famously appeared in the movie Road Trip (2000), and Jordan Tesfay, the first black plus-size woman to appear in a Cover Girl ad. Both of these women remain largely unknown to the general public.

Wilson also recently stepped into the world of plus-size fashion design, and she’d do well to remember pioneers like Monif C and Qristyl Frazier, who each created clothing for that market before it was in vogue. (Also, let’s not forget the fictional clothing line Mo’Nique’s character started in Phat Girlz: the fabulously-titled “Thick Madame.”)

At this point, it seems Wilson is refusing to concede and standing firm in her argument. She later added, “It was never my intention to erase anyone else’s achievements.” But the fact of the matter is her comments did just that. As she’s no doubt seeing now, the road to Twitter hell is paved with good intentions.

Reminder: Noah Centineo Will Be in Netflix Rom-Com 'Sierra Burgess Is a Loser'

If you’re one of the zillion people completely captivated by Noah Centineo from To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, I have some very exciting news: The 22-year-old and his perfectly-coiffed hair will be starring in another Netflix rom-com that premieres next week called Sierra Burgess Is a Loser.

Shannon Purser (a.k.a Barb!) stars as the titular character, a whip-smart member of the marching band who’s teased by a popular girl named Veronica (Kristine Froseth). Somehow, hot jock Jamey (Centineo) gets Sierra’s number, and they start a relationship over text. The twist, though, is that Jamey thinks he’s actually chatting with Veronica. So Sierra does what any normal teen would do in this situation: rope Veronica into a full-on Cyrano de Bergerac scheme to keep her identity hidden from Jamey for as long as possible. Ya know, normal adolescent shenanigans.

At first, it feels a little disappointing to see Purser play a character so afraid a guy won’t like the real her that she hides behind a cheerleader—but Sierra Burgess tackles the issue of self-identity with poignancy and empathy. “Do you have any idea what it’s like to be a teenage girl and to look like this?” Sierra says at one point, tears streaming down her face. It’s a gut-wrenching moment that will hit close to home for anyone who struggled with confidence in high school, or even now.

Watch the trailer for yourself, below:

As for Centineo’s character, Jamey, he’s just as tall and charming and smiley as he was in To All the Boys, so rest easy. The film also has a distinct eighties vibe that harkens back to the classic rom-com days of Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles. Lindsey Beer, who wrote the screenplay for Sierra Burgess Is a Loser, says that isn’t a coincidence.

“I wanted it to feel like a little bit of an ode to those eighties movies the same way Stranger Things is an ode to eighties movies: something that drew from the strength of the template of those movies but obviously goes beyond it with a modern twist,” Beer tells Glamour. “The emphasis of the love story really being on the women—the friendship love—as opposed to romantic love.”

She also assures Glamour that Sierra is the hero of this film—even though at first it may seem like she’s hiding behind Veronica. “I was really excited to write a character—in a movie that was down to a much more human level—where just kind of by virtue of being herself and fighting for the ability to just be yourself, that feels heroic to me,” she says.

Sierra Burgess Is a Loser arrives on Netflix September 7.
